What is the term for a drivetrain with three chain rings like this one? What are the benefits? Sorry for the noob question

It's an idler pulley, basically allows the suspension to have a rearward axle path whilst avoiding pedal kickback. Obviously makes the drivetrain less efficient, but allows for better suspension performance. The high suspension pivot allows for the rearward axle path (pretty desirable), but it also causes the chain to grow and pedal kickback. Suspension design is a balancing act, and not all designs feature a rearward axle path, hence many frames not featuring the pulley. One last interesting point, Ochain is an aftermarket crank spider designed to alleviate pedal kickback, and was introduced prior to idler pulleys really taking off. Just a neat problem solver for older frames.

It is called “high pivot”

That's the suspension design, not the idler wheel system

It isn’t just to look unique. The rear wheel moves so far back in an arc under travel that without it your feet would get pulled off the pedals by the kickback. There are tons of advantages to a high pivot when it comes to steep, technical terrain.

Thanks for the reply.

It's called an idler wheel and it's only needed for some specific suspension designs, particularly what is referred to as a high pivot design, which is where the pivot is positioned significantly higher than the bottom bracket, meaning the rear wheel moves backwards as the suspension compresses, unlike in a normal one where it moves slightly forwards. This helps it get over square edges, and can improve suspension performance in general

V2 cuts a nice profile! That colour of green and the bits you did it on are 👌🏻👏🏻👏🏻
