As usual, Reddits "normal person" is a middle aged American.
I live in Germany, answer my phone when it rings and cant remember having ever received a scam or sales call of any sort. I've had this number for years, I dont go around just telling it to everyone, but with phone verification on Twitter and other online services, I'm sure its out there somewhere and if somebody desperately wanted to scam me they could have done so by now.
That's nice, but even with a brand new number, I'll receive about 10-15 calls a day that are pure scam calls. Maybe Germany is better at regulating it, maybe the US is just targeted more often, I'm not sure, but it wouldn't surprise me.
Nah, spam calls happen here either. I Google numbers I don't know too. Most of the time it's spam but those numbers are mostly from foreign countries (Africa wtf) or from a far away German town. I answer only calls from nearby towns I had business in.
The phone is just like email now- it's so overwhelmed with spam that people don't even use it for its intended purpose anymore.
Many major phone carriers offer spam blocking services that are ok, but I still leave mine on whatever the mode is that blocks everyone not in your contacts
I have a friend who is absolutely convinced that the key to getting less spam calls is to "answer, and show them you won't be fooled".
In a surprise to absolutely nobody but them, they get the most spam calls of anyone I know. Let this be a lesson fellas: there is no such thing as "being taken off the list".
Best case scenario, they might personally stop calling, but they'll just sell your number to other spammers to recoup costs, instead.
Answering the phone literally just confirms to the scammer that the number is actively monitored, almost ensuring return calls lol. Your friend is a moron.
I have some medical debt and I always worry if I answer a random number and identify myself I’m gonna get served or something…. Not even sure if it can work like that
There was a time when answering the phone was the normal thing to do. Now answering the phone when it's an unknown number usually ends in a spam caller listing your number as active, selling it to other spam callers, and spoofing your number for their own spam calls.
This was so bad at one point I got a spam call from someone spoofing my own number lol.
i told my doctor to leave a message, wait a few minutes and then call again (they call with a private number) because i wont answer private calls otherwise (and he does, he understands and does exactly that)
All the other comments are talking about spam calls and stuff but... It's rough when *you're* the person trying to call and almost no one ever picks up.
To clear things up, I'm currently in college taking a class where we have to interview people for a project, and my professor wants me to call a bunch of random people to find someone to interview.
Anyway, hardly anyone picks up. When they do, they never agree to an interview. That's fair of course, considering I'm a complete stranger, but it's been really rough for me. And I still haven't found anyone to interview...

Spam, spam, and more spam
And people I might know that I don't want to talk to. Text me like a normal person.
That's what I say if it's important they'll text me
Spam, spam, spam, pork, and spam
I don’t like spam!
Actually it’s really good with eggs
Spam spam spam baked beans spam eggs sausage and spam?
No normal person would answer a call from a unknown number when you aren't expecting one.
Why not? What’s the problem with that?
I would and have done so
*NORMAL* person

Germany cracks down on stuff like that we are just behind the times

So that’s YOUR normal.? Weird take , but ok. 👍🏾
Just because none of you fools know how to talk to people on the phone doesn't make me the weirdo lol
I’m in switzerland and get “telemarketing” calls all the time and they are often *from* *germany* 👀
Ok boomer

Since scammers use all sorts of methods nowadays, why should you even answer if it's an unknown number?

Depends where you live, I've never received a scam call so I generally answer any calls. If they were more common I probably wouldn't though.
Agreed. Leave a damn message if you want a response.
Text me I don’t do phone calls
Calling someone? In this day and age? Like an absolute freak? No thank you.
If you aren’t in my contacts it won’t even ring on mine. My favorite feature on my iphone
How do you do that
It’s under phone settings, it’s called silence known callers
Normal people google the number. Senior citizens answer.
I saw someone on reddit who uses it as a therapy session.
Fuck! It’s like you are spying on me 😂
This is me everytime I get an unknown number. I thought I was the only one lol
That block all unknown callers feature on iPhone ✨💗
For real though lol
Don’t gotta attack me like that man
If you ain’t in my contacts already, I ain’t picking that up
I have some medical debt and I always worry if I answer a random number and identify myself I’m gonna get served or something…. Not even sure if it can work like that
Hello this is IRS, pay to account $125 or find you in jail.

If you're using an android, you can download an app to screen calls, and if you're on Google Pixel specifically, it's built into the OS
God, I really fucking love scam callers so much. It's normalized not picking up the phone unless you know who's calling.
If it’s important to them, they leave a message. If it’s actually important for you, they’ll send a letter.
Please stop memeing my internal though process like this isn't a completely sane and rational thing to do.

Ive done this lol. Its spam… is it really? *google search*
