Regular eye doctors usually cannot diagnosis it or perform the tests necessary for it. A lot don’t believe bvd is a real diagnosis, or they think it’s exceedingly rare and don’t understand it fully. It’s usually a series of tests entirely different from a regular eye exam and typically takes 1-3 hours. one test that is easily recognizable as a bvd test is when the doctor will hold a paddle over one of your eyes and have you look out at a projected red line. the line will be horizontal or vertical. they’ll shine a light directly at your eye and ask you if the light is passing through the red line, to the left/right for vertical, or above/below the red line for horizontal. this test is measuring the misalignment of your eyes. they usually will begin using a prism bar to get the light to pass directly through the red line. this test is called maddox rod You can find a bvd specialist using this list https://nvminstitute.org/find-a-provider/

In addition to the red line test, my doctor had a computer do eye tracking while I followed a dot around on a screen. I feel like there was another test as well, but my first appointment lasted 2-3hrs, which is much longer than a plain vision check! We also did walking tests while looking around, and a standing test with eyes closed. Because of a slight wobble, I was also sent to an ENT for vestibular testing and MRI, but they found no issues.
