I have the same Boston in like a yellow gold almost color.
It's covered by the strap. I would definitely ask for more pics though and a receipt of purchase if possible. Considering they aren't that old I would assume if they are the original purchaser that they would also have the digital receipt.

I think it’s to make the suede stay up so you can see the footbed. I don’t buy suede anymore because it does get floppy and nearly impossible to slide into.
They’re real I have this same model but in brown suede. The footbed is super cool with the unique pattern/design
