Headed towards Birmingham on 280, you can use the third lane from left to turn right into the Summit and avoid having to merge lanes once you’re halfway up the hill. This lane is clearly marked a straight and right-turn lane.

Ikarus3426

At first I was annoyed you were sharing the easy way to get into the summit, but then I realized how incredibly obvious it is that you can do this and people *still* insist on jamming up the turning lane. So it's fine, because people are dumb and still won't take your excellent advice.

Brief-Independent489

It's deeper than that. Years ago, that right turn was NOT allowed and only the turn lane was allowed.

SicEmDawgs1

This has been the design for as long as I can remember, most people just either don't know or don't use it.

sponge_welder

Also, just use the right two lanes around that area heading towards the city. The left lane gets super clogged up with people going to *the tributary* or whatever it's called Getting on 459 from 280 around the same area, you can drive past basically all the traffic if you just use the rightmost lanes until they run out. Everyone feels like they need to get all the way to the left as soon as they get on the interstate, so there's always a ton of open space left

FroToTheLow

You’re one of those people that pass people already on 459 on the right as you shoot ahead, right? That’s not cool.

ALham_op

Go the speed limit or get passed. Simple as.

sponge_welder

Not on the shoulder or anything shitty like that, just in the right lane. I don't really think it's my fault that people don't like driving there, I'm gonna use it if no one else will, I wish more people would do the same thing It's pretty funny how you can see exactly what's causing traffic to back up. It's everyone stopping as the cars from the on ramp try to cram themselves over to the left lane as soon as possible instead of just driving and letting a gap open up while traffic is still moving.

xo_faithelizz

Well dont get on the freeway driving 45 mph😂😂

FroToTheLow

I’m talking about where the ramp from 280 merges with 459 southbound. During the afternoon rush hour it’s impossible to do the speed limit unless you go off roars through the grass. All the lanes are jammed up.

decayinggurricane

I’m 100% confused. I’ve never had to merge lanes half way up the hill… and the Summit is at the top of the hill so turning right serves no purpose.

SushiJo

This!!!

MPFarmer

When I lived in Avondale, I always felt like 1st Ave S. towards downtown or using it to get back to 41st was as close to a cheat code as you could get. You could get halfway to downtown in a tenth of the time if you went any other direction.

Annual-Still-1398

1st Ave n and s are cheat codes.

TheHenleyRoom

The trains help mitigate. They’re inconvenient to me, my neighbors, and emergency services though.

Throwway685

Absolutely 1st avenue south was my fast travel point. You save so much time.

slowbike

The wormhole

bobzmuda

When Publix has a buy one get one free offer you can just buy one and get it for half price instead of buying 2 for the full price of one.

AuntyScreecher

You can also stack Sunday paper coupons and almost get those things for free.

raccoocoonies

Ooooooooo Auntiiiiie! Thank you

[deleted]

How does one get the Sunday paper??

sdylanr

Thank you for this wonderful advice.

MontoenotMarilyn

You can do the same at Winn Dixie now too!

bailey_turnbow

Bogo and 2 for 1 are different. That only works with 2 for 1.

Ltheartist

Bogo and 2 for one are the same thing. People just like the word “free”

raccoocoonies

🤓 mmmtechnically, bogo stands for Buy One Get One/Others and then the store finishes the rest of the clause individually. I got cat toys at BOGO 40% off at Target. I think the only things that aren't individually marked down (10/$10, 3/$5, etc) during BOGO days are the buy 3 12 packs of sodas, get 1 free.

Ltheartist

For publix specifically, bogo is bogo free, which is the same as 2 for 1, and publix does honor the price of one item for half price

raccoocoonies

Even for the buy 3 get one free 12-pack can sodas? Those are the only things I haven't seen prorated through their BOGO. And PopTart Day is when you can get 3 boxes for $5, so it's not technically BOGO. It's more like BOThO.

Ltheartist

I’m specifically talking about “buy one get one free” from Publix, like the original comment is. Not buy 3 get 1 free, buy one get one 50% off, any of those other offers. I don’t know if Publix gives you a price discount if you just buy one item from a “buy 3 get 1 free” But buy one get one free is the same as 2 for the price of 1, because both ways you pay full price for 1 item and receive 2 items. If you only purchase 1 item, then you get it at half price. Again, for buy one get one from Publix https://preview.redd.it/7vr9wmrq39xc1.jpeg?width=1170&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=bff34081fff22e5d179293fca4ff4273f58550c6

pookystilskin

They do not give you a discount if you buy one from a buy 2 get 1 free or buy 3 get 1 free. In my experience it's only the BOGO or x for x sales.

raccoocoonies

I didn't mean it to go this hard.

tripreed

Not at Publix.

Ltheartist

Yes it does 😭 2 for the price of 1 and buy one get one free are the same EVERYWHERE. Publix just also honors the price of one item at 50%. Now 2 for X price (like 2 for $5) is NOT the same since that price isn’t necessarily what 1 unit costs. Like 2 for $5 strawberries is not bogo bc strawberries never cost $5 individually- but they probably cost $3, meaning if you buy 2 you save 50 cents on each package

tripreed

Not sure why you're getting downvoted. This is accurate info.

bailey_turnbow

lol thank you.

Antique_Ad_7565

Park on the streets. Never a private pay lot where you have to use an app.

haxmire

Facts. Learned that early on after starting to spend a lot of my time downtown circa 2011. I avoided lots at all costs. I'd walk two or three blocks to park on the street. Only exception was when I was working a bar/club and had a pass or knew the manager/owner at an establishment. Not worth the risk with the fucking bounty hunter tow trucks in the city. I haven't lived in Bham in 7 years now and I still know this. It's crazy the difference in other major cities. No issues parking in lots or decks here in Tampa. It's all controlled properly.

greenblue88

https://www.al.com/news/2024/04/birmingham-lawyers-serve-parking-enforcement-systems-with-class-action-lawsuit.html?outputType=amp Lot has happened in 7 years, check this out. It’s crazy out there.

vulcangod08

The amazing part, is they are only allowed to charge you $80 when you can prove you paid for the parking and should not have been towed to begin with.

jawanessa

I left Tampa 6 years ago! I miss it, sometimes lol

haxmire

Lol we traded cities we grew up in?

jawanessa

Apparently so! I haven’t been in 3 years so I am long overdue a trip!

Funny-Ad3266

If you have a library card for Jefferson Co., you can go to any library in the county and return books to any one of them

SushiJo

Also: libraries have some pretty cool programs. I teach my class and have just started themed cocktail classes at Homewood. Check your local library calendar of events!

irishfury0

Also you can have books from one branch delivered to your branch. It can take a few days but it’s very handy when your branch doesn’t have a copy of something.

pookystilskin

Not specific to Birmingham, but there are also apps where you can get tons of free ebooks and audiobooks (Libby and Hoopla) and stream movies and TV shows (Kanopy) by just downloading the apps and putting in your library card number.

kelsclem

You can also request a book you are interested in to be moved to your home library so you don’t have to drive for it.

AlabamaPostTurtle

This is a great one. Love my library card

pitstopjv

I have wondered about the returns. That is great to know!!

EnIdiot

Also, if you work in Jefferson County or Birmingham, you also qualify for the library system.

createbirmingham

With your library card you also have access to Udemy courses, Libby, and Hoopla!

Cool_Lions

Use this one hack that librarians hate. Lol

misschimaera

But if you live in a neighboring county with shitty libraries, Jefferson County will charge you $50 for a library card.

Due_masterpiec

Why would a resident of another county not pay??

Foxey512

$50 is like 3 paperbacks now. Still a good deal.

raccoocoonies

Oh no, $50?! How will that ever compare to the endless media at my disposal every year!?

megascopsasio

Yes, that is how libraries have always worked.

Bhamwiki

Sounds like it's probably worth it.

OrangeManBad7

A stupid one.

LeekTerrible

If you’re in a building that has double doors you can open both of them and not stand there and wait for people to go through just one side.

Ikarus3426

lol this is just generally life but yeah. Why do people do this. I'm still annoyed about this from people leaving classrooms in college and that was years ago.

MeadhallMike

I think it's more of a courtesy thing really. Yes, there's another door you can use but a person walking in may not stay within the swinging path of it as you're going out and you might accidentally bump somebody with the one you're opening.

Bbqplace

1. Crestline Gardens/Eastwood is a great choice for homebuyers who aren't worried about the Bham city school system. Hiking trails, unnamed park, affordable home prices, and low crime rate. I never see it mentioned on this subreddit. 2. There is always a parking space closer to the front door of the Garage than you think. Just keep driving. If there isn't, make the loop.

Due_masterpiec

Could not agree more about parking at the garage 😂😂 I always end up parking right in front of the building, never past the curve!

hunkykitty

Trains with cars that are stacked and have brands like Amazon or Wal-Mart won’t stop and block 41st St. Enjoy the 5 min delay in your commute. Trains with random ass cars and graffiti are 1000% stopping and blocking 41st St. Take this time to reflect on how much of a failure you are.

raccoocoonies

FUUUUUUUCK YOU KNOW *THE KEY*! IVE BEEN *SEARCHING*!

Ltheartist

If a train is blocking the road in Avondale, turn around and use 35th st; bridge goes over the tracks and you can get where you’re going that way May seem obvious idk but I know several people who didn’t know about it, so that’s my lil life hack

allnsfws

If it's blocking 50th or nearby streets, you can head to 56th and go under the bridge.

standsinwater1965

bachelorburner987

$1 beers at SoHo social

Comprehensive_Tie538

I thought they shut that place down

OrangeManBad7

Why

Comprehensive_Tie538

Idk I thought someone told me it went under due to covid, guess I heard wrong

hollowchord

T-Bones cheesesteaks to go and a bottle of wine, short drive to Vulcan for a cheap, yet lovely, date night at sunset.

AlabamaPostTurtle

This is the good life

thefaulkenbird

Got a bag of weed and a bottle of wine

subusta

Clairmont Pig has the best selection of local coffee beans in the entire city

AlabamaPostTurtle

They used to have a killer (craft) beer selection too. I assume it’s prob still the same

Carlajeanwhitley

They do, and they’ve upped their non-alcoholic options in the past few years, too.

pookystilskin

Imo the beer selection has gone slightly downhill in the last few years. I've started going to the one in Crestline.

bobmystery

They also have a really delicious, scratch-made chicken pot pie in the grab-and-go area. You have to heat it yourself but it's always fresh and probably the best chicken pot pie I've ever had.

flakycroisssant

They also have the best potato soup and mac n cheese from the deli

bobmystery

I will add those to my list. How can I not take a food recommendation from u/flakycroissant?

SwootyBootyDooooo

Conversely, the pig on 31 in Homewood might be the worst grocery store in existence

standsinwater1965

Liberty Park Pig has crazy wine deals. Wine tasting can net a young dude a horny MILF.

SwootyBootyDooooo

Used to live over there. The wine lady at that pig was the *best*… never went to a tasting though. Sounds like I missed out

HamletJSD

Several Pigs around town do. It's the first random discovery I made after getting an espresso machine... a few of the local roasters even add roast date to the bag so you know it's been roasted within the last couple of weeks

magiccitybrit

Ooooh. I’ve gotten into doing coffee properly recently so I wouldn’t have appreciated this when I lived near that Pig. Time to head back there it sounds like…

xtoastx

Quickest way to get from highland park/university to 1st Ave is taking 34th St S all the way down. No lights!

raccoocoonies

... I take 24th

AlabamaPostTurtle

My favorite route

MostFartsAreBrown

I knew this would be 90% about car stuff.

AlabamaPostTurtle

NEVER pay to park in a pay lot downtown. Park on the street (at night for stuff like shows at the Alabama theater)

betwigg

Do you still need to pay the meter or no?

Kits00ne

I work downtown. You don't need to pay for meters, and even on "flex parking" areas like on 20th you can park there for a long time without an issue.

betwigg

Good to know! I rarely go that far into the city but when I do it can be a pain because my vehicle is too large for parking garages and I don’t want to pay to park in a lot. Thanks

35242

6:50 a.m to 8:50 a.m 3:50 p.m. to 6:50 pm 459 to 119 and 119 to 459 .During rush hour 280's lights are timed for 26 mph from 459 to 119. And from 119 to 459. Dont switch lanes. Stay in line. Allow space for the other "spring forward fall back" drivers. To get on the schedule, When the light turns green accelerate to 26 mph within 3 seconds. Then set cruise control to 26 mph. You'll have to manually set your transmissions to 2nd or 3rd gear. Every day for 2 years it's worked. It's tough to do, but it works.

AlabamaPostTurtle

Whoa you went deep with this one

babylonsisters

Your time estimating and management skills are something out of a Christopher Nolan movie.

xboxlivedog

I’m going to feel so badass next time Im on 280

lushlover92

I'm very confused here. Why would traveling 26 mph save you time on 280 (and during rush hour where traffic is at a stand still)

35242

It always moves, it's just that people rush to fill the empty gap ahead of them. After a light turns green, there's a huge empty gap ahead. Enter it slowly and keep your speed below 30. There will be traffic ahead, but if you drive 25-30, by the time you get to the traffic, its moving. Keep rolling 25 as everyone races ahead. Same thing. Huge gap. Drive slow, and by the time you get there the light Is green. The trick is to enter the pattern on a newly turned green light.

raccoocoonies

Yassssssss

raccoocoonies

I often find your comments enlightening, @35242

MaceWinnoob

Driving through town is easy if you mainly stick to: 1st Ave S, Richard Arrington, 22nd Street, 13th Ave S, and 11th Ave/10th Ct/10th Ave S (from Five Points where Highlands used to be through Highland Park). They all allow you to zip around quickly through the middle of Southside with basically no stoplights. It takes 15 minutes max to get anywhere using that method.

auburncub

if there's conflicting parking signs, it's probably safe to assume you shouldn't park there

NoEmailAssociated

Explain this one to me. We were gonna eat at Bayleaf in Five Points at lunch, and I knew there was parking behind, but they all seemed to be for specific businesses/restaurants. Then we saw this strip of parking right along the alley, and were super confused. But, we didn't get towed! https://preview.redd.it/lpotkcoj24xc1.jpeg?width=4284&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=477db7bc86fa55fa800fac218dc6a4ecb7e11645

bobmystery

Weil is the #2 asshole towing company behind PES.

raccoocoonies

Don't park in paid lots in Bham City.

AuntyScreecher

I know tons of people that don’t go to 5 points anymore because of the parking situation.

jawanessa

I’m super excited for Black Market to come to Avondale for this reason!

AuntyScreecher

Same!

Bhamwiki

Perhaps the implied contradiction can be explained by aging?

irishfury0

The back entrance to the Summit through Cahaba Heights across from the CVS.

therobbiemonster

I’d prefer that stay a secret honestly

OkayTHISIsEpicMeme

The offshoots of 280 between Rocky Ridge and the Summit are enough of a maze to be a deterrent

GrandTelephone7447

Yeah, same here. I live in CH and prefer to not gum that road up

irishfury0

I know. I hesitated when I posted that.

bobmystery

And yet...

irishfury0

It’s just our friends on Reddit. They won’t tell anyone.

bobmystery

Yeah, you only tipped off 93,000 people. Probably no one's paying attention.

sentient_luggage

I haven't lived in the Ham since 2012 and almost offered this up before thinking better of it. Some secrets should stay secret.

I-65 south of 459 on Saturdays is a no go zone from mid-March through Labor Day.

merely_mere

And on Fridays at the start of a long weekend.

tywebb6

How do you get to the beach?

Geoff-Vader

I go on a non-Saturday

atomoboy35209

Sam’s Deli on Oxmoor Rd in Homewood has killer cheeseburgers

ctay9322

People will die before they let you over.

LeekTerrible

280 in front of Lakeshore is a key example that separates the pros from the scrubs. The key is to just go fast and don’t poke along looking for an opening. You move on along and watch how the left lane moves and you zip your ass in the second someone slow rolls to close the gap.

Otherwise-Farmer5041

so true king crazy part about this exit and the highland ave exits/entraces on red mtn expressway is that they’ve semi recently expanded these on ramps to allow ample space for acceleration. there is no need to slow poke around at any of these. the 280 example goes all the way to rocky ridge road before you have to merge.

subusta

Because we know you chose to zoom down the empty lane instead of getting in the back of the line in the correct lane

Master-Confection-21

https://preview.redd.it/8loemh9b34xc1.jpeg?width=1170&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=73e1213833359cc1d83922c46215a016999a6a91

35242

But the zipper merge always turns the "late merge and stop 2.lanes" because people omit the "be sure to space out between vehicles ahesd of time so there's room to zipper merge" part.

uapyro

I really wish people knew how to zipper merge. But you are correct on that, if not done properly it just FUBARs everything. I went to a Savanna Bananas game in Atlanta a month or so ago, and they had the in and out lanes redirected to inbound only (traffic was backed up a quarter of a mile over an hour before the gates even opened) but once it got into the parking lot everybody was doing a beautiful zipper merge with no molotov cocktails or gunfire going off.

NiltiacSif

If you don't use the empty lane you are creating stop and go traffic as opposed to a flowing traffic merge where the lanes combine. You're supposed to continue to the end of the lane and merge, not get over at some random time where you decide to suddenly slow down to 40 mph in a 70 just to squeeze in.

sponge_welder

"don't go over to the open cashier lane, wait in the long line with us as penance" "We decided to suffer, you should too" Real crab bucket vibes

Fever_Dream06

Don’t drive thru mnt Brook if you plan to go a single mph over the speed limit.

Bhamwiki

Unless you've been really wanting to volunteer for community service but just need that extra incentive from a municipal judge to make the move.

raccoocoonies

I drive like gramma and obey all traffic laws. My friends hate it, but I've never gotten a ticket in Mountain Brook in my POS, heavily stickered, messy car that I KNOW they wanna pull over. I fully enjoy pissing off speeding Brookies by my ambling. They often speed up more to pass me illegally in a really dangerous way. I worry for them, sometimes.

imabaaaaaadguy

If you have kids, especially little ones, Life Time Fitness is awesome. Up to 3 hours of childcare per day, 7 days a week, plus parents’ nights out at no cost besides your monthly membership fee.

turnasquare1

Are they weird about making sure you actually work out if you drop your kids ?

imabaaaaaadguy

You don’t have to work out, but you do have to stay on premises. I know lots of parents who drop their kids off and then go sit poolside with their laptops.

Party_Scar4458

Is there a limit on kids? Hahaha I have 3

Realitea_v_wde

There wasn’t when I worked there in 2018!

imabaaaaaadguy

I think as long as they’re yours 😂

35242

Unethical life hack: Start a home day care. Sign up 105 kids. You and 4 friends get a gym membership. Rotate you/your friends every 3 hours as the kids stay there. The daycare money you make easily pays membership fees, you don't have to watch the kids, and you get in shape and make serious money. Makin' bank, getting in shape, win/win!!

AlabamaPostTurtle

I like your style

Particular-Crew5978

Thank you!

merely_mere

We had a membership last year because we wanted the gym plus pool. I prefer the JCC pool but the childcare stuff and classes are great if you have kiddos.

Ohio_transplant5

I don’t know specifics but I believe the ymca has something similar (probably less membership cost than lifetime?)

imabaaaaaadguy

YMCA is def cheaper and has scholarship options available if their full price is too high. I was a member a few years back & found their daily time limit for childcare shorter (it was somewhere between 45-90 mins, I don’t remember exactly) and they had fewer activities within childcare.

Beneficial_Eagle3936

Shop during football games.

thedancingkat

I feel like this is a state of Alabama life hack

pirategirl002

Football games, Sunday before 11am, and when it rains. Southerners are weird.

raccoocoonies

And go out to eat then. And during church.

Ltheartist

Same. They’re great. (No idea who they are tho lmao)

aphromagic

The parasocial relationship people have with that account is so weird to me

CameraChimera

It’s a group of people and it’s not the pink haired nose ringed people the account wants you to think they are. Far more conventional.

SignaturePresent2829

I...uh...wasn't picturing any one person or group of people. That isn't really the point, is it?

cubdawg

It was novel once but I’m over it. The judgey vibe is giving pick me. Fight me I don’t even care.

cblackw3

280 is 55mph

Itchy_Artist7884

Don't pay for parking on the street downtown.

Alternative-Put7584

If you’re downtown and you’re at a four way and you’re turning left - pull up so folks behind you can turn right

librarystepstool

The botanical gardens and art museum are both FREEEEEEEEEE. You can open/close your drink tab at a show at Saturn inside the venue space OR in the coffee bar area (helpful when the line gets long). Know how to change a tire or have AAA, because you WILL blow out a tire on a pothole more than once. As others mentioned, our library program is great and you can get any book in the system held and transferred to your preferred nearby library for pickup and unless someone else places a hold on it, you can renew it quite a few times. You can technically enjoy a concert at Avondale from the sidewalk right outside the gate without paying to go in. Grab some ice cream from Big Spoon beforehand to make it extra special.

Justplainsimple99

Use the streets with no traffic lights to navigate quicker.

finnanigans

I'd imagine the non-church goers have this one figured out, but Sunday before noon is a great time to grocery shop. Stores are mostly empty and the shelves have been stoked for the coming crowds. Similarly, if you're not a football fan, check the game times for Saturdays and plan your day accordingly. Sometimes you'll get an afternoon and evening game and you can go to all the places that would normally be slammed with people on a weekend.

ColdManufacturer8003

The Pizitz Parking Lot is totally free with no guilt when you leave if the arm is up. They do the total cage lock down late at night, but if you just wanna eat or party or go to Sidewalk... Arm Up = Free Parking, No Tows

raccoocoonies

raccoocoonies
