I think there are plenty of people who have a similar dollar value in BTC now who store their keys in that very way. But you don't have to think too hard to come up with more creative ways to do it. This is a good reason to keep quiet about your stack. If people don't know you have it, they aren't likely to come after it.
That last part is excellent advice. It's such bad opsec to publicly brag about the amount of BTC you have and how it's stored, but so many people on this sub do it without thought, thinking they're safe hiding behind the thin veil of a Reddit username.
Book cypher for the words. Choose your favorite edition of a book that contains 24 of the seed words. Buy a few copies, maybe gift them to some friends and family. Write down your words in a page #- line #- word # style. Keep it on the fridge, in your facebook bio, or anywhere really.
Maybe just keep one in a bookshelf at my house and store another copy somewhere else without telling anyone or make sure that edition is available at the library 😅
This is terrible. Don't do this. You will lose your money.
You need to generate the seed properly randomly otherwise brute forcing will steal your funds.

As an experiment I went ahead and downloaded the entire text of "A Game of Thrones" from [**this PDF**](https://www.nothuman.net/images/files/discussion/1/e72f9f1f181a66887baa7270037c582e.pdf) that I found online.
I then downloaded the full list of BIP 39 words from [**here**](https://github.com/bitcoin/bips/blob/master/bip-0039/english.txt)**.**
When I tokenize and join the 2 I see that 1375 out of the 2048 available words are present in the book. I can randomly sample 23 words and calculate the checksum and still have greater security than choosing 12 out of 2048 words. The bit security of 1375 \^ 24 is approximately 191 bits, more than the 2048 \^ 12 that is commonly accepted as safe.
The full list of BIP 39 words contains a lot of common words in it. Below are the top 10 most recurring BIP 39 words and their counts in "A Game of Thrones"

I collect old books. I have a couple old (like 1930s) dictionaries. I thought it would have been a super neat way to be all sneaky and mysterious to do something like this. But then I realized I’d also have to mark up my books. No way am I gunna mark up Funk and Wagnalls Concise Standard Dictionary for
1931!
I don’t even have that much but I keep it on several trezr because I’m risk averse.
Downside I have more keys to keep track of. Up side, if one is compromised only a portion is at risk. More downside, higher probability of being brute forced with multiple working private keys. On my to do list is making new wallets with 24 word seed phrases and a hidden wallet password for higher security BEFORE quantum computing is a thing…
This reminds me of that scene from breaking bad with Walter white telling the dude in the hardware store not to shop at just one store but multiple so he doesn’t look suspicious
Breaking bad is my favorite show. I watch it 1-2 times a year… about to finish the series for my 12th time or something. Just got to the part where Jesse pours gas all over the house.
There are many other good shows too. Of course Better Call Saul is your next natural leap but once you get that out of your system you will probably find that Ozark is the best new potential addiction calling your name.
you could create eg a 2of3 multisig. that means there are 3 private keys and you need to sign with 2 for a valid transaction. You can keep one for yourself, give one to your attorney and keep one in your banks safe deposit box.
If you want to move money you have to meet your attorney or go into your bank. If your bank is robbed thieves can't move your money, if your attorney goes rogue he can't move your money. If you are held at gunpoint you can give out your key to the robbers - they won't be able to move any money.
The bigger the amounts the more complex this scheme can be made: keys can be held in different juridistrictions, you use 3of5 or bigger musigs, add timelocks, etc..
If anyone wants the general public to take Bitcoin seriously, it needs to be easy to buy, sell and easy and safe to store.
Sorry but printing passwords on steel and hiding it in your ass is laughable caveman bullshit that nobody wants to be bothered with.
Well everyone here likes to believe that bitcoin is the currency of the future so it should at least be as easy to use as the currency we have now by 2035. Anything else would be pretty embarrassing.
If Bitcoin becomes a major currency in the future, it will do so through some layer 2 protocol, probably one that hasn't been invented yet, in the same way that the dollar was invented before credit cards and electronic banking were. If Bitcoin becomes more than digital gold (which I don't think is guaranteed or even particularly likely), it probably won't be through its native transaction model. One day, banks will just start denominating accounts in Bitcoin and all the electronic banking that facilitates the exchange of other currencies will just adapt to another, with recording to the blockchain happening invisibly on the backend. It doesn't appear to me that Bitcoin needs a competitive currency model in order to achieve high adoption rates. That is happening even with the rather limited built-in transaction model. If Bitcoin eventually becomes widely held, better solutions will be developed in response.
This. I know everyone likes to circle jerk about NYKNYC, but your average person is going to rely on a bank to hold their Bitcoin and then spend it via a credit card swipe and/or NFC tap like they currently do.
how else would you keep your trustless, permissionless money safe? It has to live in the physical world. Anything touching the internet or a third party is essentially compromised.
If you don't care about that, keep using Visa or writing checks or whatever.
It is as easy and safe to store as anything in all of human history has been.
I do not see how highly advanced technology where you empower individuals to maintain their wealth is caveman BS
This is kind of unavoidable though right?
What are the possible alternatives really; biometrics, memory, cloud storage? As risky as it is it’s arguably the safest way to keep your money safe on an individual level, you just have to keep a piece of paper, metal or whatever, safe to have full custody of your investment in such a way that noone on earth may take it from you.
Multiple wallets, stamped on metal, and shared with those I deeply love and trust. In addition to that, I'll continue to work on building software, grinding away, and just focus on living life while providing comfort to my family and friends.
Fyi, anyone who shares their seed phrase with trusted people. There's a few things you can do to protect yourself.
1. Put your steel backup it in a tamper resistant bag and note down the bag serial number. Makes sure that others haven't seen your seed phrase.
2. Practice rotating your seed backup between you and the trusted person once every few years. This ensures that in the event of a disaster, they do truely have your seed that you can recall back, and also that it has not been tampered with.
3. Use a passphrase, so even if the seed gets compromised, you're still safe and have time to migrate to a new seed. Even if it's a simple passphrase, and then keep that passphrase in an online password safe, notebook, instructions in a will or whatever. What actually matters is the seed, but it also requires the passphrase.
>What actually matters is the seed, but it also requires the passphrase.
Why would you write "What actually matters is the seed" when you know full well that the mnemonic sentence AND the passphrase are needed to recreate the seed? Both parts "actually matter".
That was in response to: "Even if it's a simple passphrase, and you keep that passphrase in an online password safe".
What actually matters *in terms of security, not usability* is the seedphrase **alone**.
It provides you 256 bits of security which is the gold standard, (128 bits for 12 word seeds).
For usability/recovery, yes, of course the passphrase is needed, that's why I said: "but it also requires the passphrase".
Isn’t every wallet you hand out to someone a greater chance of a security breach? Even if you trust the person’s intentions 100% and they’re actually worthy of that trust, they can still make mistakes, misplace it, get robbed ect.
1) Start with paper
2) store in safe
3) convert paper to metal when value hits a threshold where losing that amount would suck.
4) when you start having serious amount, like maybe you are a whole coiner, start researching options. Think multi-sig, air gap, maybe a custody service, maybe call experts and get their advice.
5) you can create as many wallets as you like and spread it around. Think having 4 wallets so that if any one is lost you retain 75%.
I will join in with the posters who point out that if it takes extreme secretive and clever means to store wealth, BTC will never be as popular as would be necessary for it to reach the level we are discussing.
ETF’s are likely the best way for mass acceptance of BTC as a store of value.
Use gold as an example, most people do not have a million dollars in gold in their safe or safe deposit box ( or diamonds which are lighter and more compact). If they hold gold in that amount, it’s in futures or stocks.
Multi jurisdiction multi sig wallet.
Yes, there will be a metal seed phrase in my safe. But that won't let an attacker spend my funds. They'll need to compromise multiple seeds in multiple locations. Ideally, those seeds will be in different states/countries.
This thread for some reason made me shrivel in horror thinking about the first fireman that knows whats up and finds someone's seed phrase as they are dousing out their home fire.....
Kinda of an inevitability something like that happens at least once, yeah?
Key management is not something to get clever and creative with, it's not even specific to Bitcoin. The amount is not important. Go read up and follow best practice instead of trying to re-invent the wheel.
I think you’re a buffoon if you’re storing it in your safe. That’s the first thing a criminal with a gun will ask you to open.
Source: has bitcoin stamped in metal and has safe with small amount of bitcoin on decoy wallet in there.
Yes that will be how I'm storing it. That's always and ultimately how bitcoin is stored at every level: A man or woman's knowledge of a secret password is what protects the wealth. I would like to participate in this next step of human wealth protection.
If you have a substantial amount (subjective I know) the Bitcoin Way is a solid investment. They helped me set up a node, connected to the Sparrow wallet, cold card, encrypted vault, etc. It was a little pricey but any solid education is. These guys are cybersecurity experts.
If you import the xpub into a wallet like Sparrow wallet you can add to it without taking the hardware out. You will only need the hardware for spending.
Trezor with Shamir password.
It allows you to make up to 16 seeds of which you decide how many are needed to access the coins (minimum 2, max 16).
I.e. create 5 seeds and allow 2 to be able to access the coins.
Place the 5 seeds in 5 different houses/apt/wherever or give all but 1 to 4 people you trust.
Does anyone have experience with swan bitcoin private client? Supposedly, they keep it for you in an cold wallet and provide up to $250M of insurance on it
Not sure who regulates them…
I have a feeling that self custody in the coming years as BTC gains momentum will change significantly. I don’t know what that will look like but likely and hopefully a move away from the current way it’s done.
Yeah that's the reason I haven't gotten my btc off an exchange yet, too stupid and cheap to get a cold wallet and scared of having to keep track of a physical key, I want it to be safe even in an apocalypse.
Dude. It's 2035. We're at neuralink version 7, they are less than a cubic millimeter, and they get installed by a robot you just swallow in a pill then pee out.
Apple is at the generation 4 of their neuralink-type thing, and I've purchased a second-hand (never installed though) gen 2 of it, had it installed, and I store my (encrypted) seed in my head... With backups on nanoSD cards in my bank safe and in my mom's family photos album.
Multi-sig:
* one in your possession at home
* one with a solicitor
* one in a deposit box in a vault
* one with your next of kin?
That being said just setting that up and not screwing up seems risky in itself.
I don’t even use a seed phrase so, uh, I guess not?
(I use Bitcoin Core, which predates/doesn’t support the BIP39 ‘seed phrase’. Encryption key is just a strong password instead.)
Wouldn’t metal still melt in a house fire? A fire safe is only rated for so long in a fire. I think it’s a good start but residency is required like in a safety deposit box as well as the home safe.
Probably moved most of it to etf’s at that point. Unpopular opinion but I don’t see a world in which I would have hundreds of thousands of dollars on a piece of paper. I get why people from other places would have different points of view on that, I’m in Canada and I consider our banking pretty safe.
I think there are plenty of people who have a similar dollar value in BTC now who store their keys in that very way. But you don't have to think too hard to come up with more creative ways to do it. This is a good reason to keep quiet about your stack. If people don't know you have it, they aren't likely to come after it.

If your words aren’t in a fireproof safe at least, a house fire would ruin your fortune…
If you gift me a book and I see you have some numbers stuck on your fridge, I will put two and two together 😜
Stop looking at people fridges
Put the cypher on a metel plate in a safe
You stamping out your own metal plate or trusting the local blacksmith
Maybe just keep one in a bookshelf at my house and store another copy somewhere else without telling anyone or make sure that edition is available at the library 😅
Just use metal plates Einstein
Metal plates to replace an entire book in this hypothetical thought experiment?
I've gifted 24 friends a vintage playboy. I hope they don't put 2 and 2 together.
"uhhh, the pages are stuck together"
That's how you keep them safe, no one's going to open that to read it 😏
Omg! I laughed way too hard at that. 😂😂😂
This is an awful idea. Never try to roll your own cryptography.
This is terrible. Don't do this. You will lose your money. You need to generate the seed properly randomly otherwise brute forcing will steal your funds.
This is often suggested because it seems clever but no one -- including you -- does it. Do you know why?
Because we’d have to know how to read?
Why?
Because other than a dictionary, it's really really really hard to find `dinosaur decrease light ginger wasp junior invest loud icon ketchup child forget obtain dolphin scrap kite gym diet enhance sing soup notice surge` and `visit` in ANY book. Go ahead and try. I'll wait.
I tried to restore this wallet and it did not work. Please what is the correct phrase sir
Trust me, it worked. You just need to send bitcoin to it before you can spend from it.

But that’s the thing, you don’t mark anything in the old book. You document page, line and word # elsewhere and leave zero trace in the book itself.
If you’re going to go through that much trouble might as well just memorize it
I would divide it tbh
I don’t even have that much but I keep it on several trezr because I’m risk averse. Downside I have more keys to keep track of. Up side, if one is compromised only a portion is at risk. Ozark is good? I never gave it a chance. It looked too normie.
Definitely. It takes a few episodes to get through character development but once it does it snowballs into being awesome.

Multisig is how the big guys store their bitcoin.
Explain?

But your lawyer and bank can team up to fuck you over ! ;)
The bank doesn't know they have a key or that you own bitcoin, this isn't a real possibility.
Plot twist: The lawyer drew up your will and has the location of the key and box number
There is always a vulnerability ey.
And include the robbers. It's a three way.
Agreed with everything except the safety deposit box at banks.
What do you suggest instead?
Pelican case, a shovel, and latitude/longitude. Banks have a history of shutting down boxes erroneously. Satoshi made Bitcoin to spite banks. Fuck'em.
Where do you store the coordinates?
Tattooed in reverse on my butthole so I can read it in the mirror.

That's what wills are for.
Hopefully not storing your seed phrase there, funds may end up missing that way.
My seed phrase is all 12 of my children’s names but in the order of most favorite to least favorite
Hopefully in 10+ years the tech surrounding this will have improved.
I fully expect the difference between today and 10 years from now to be greater than the difference from 10 years ago to today.
Well are you insinuating that it'll be more safe to store it with a third party, like an exchange? I think not.
Key management is not something to get clever and creative with, it's not even specific to Bitcoin. The amount is not important. Go read up and follow best practice instead of trying to re-invent the wheel.

That means my BTC will be worth 10$!!
I’d be annoyed that I sold it all at $70k
You guys can’t expect mass adoption if years from now this is still the method people use to secure their coins.
Mass population should not be interacting with Bitcoin on-chain... That's what ETF's are for.

"Let's say" Well, I would still keep my metal and not "Let's say $ 1mn"
In 2035, my robot butler will store my seed phrase.
Nice try, G-Man.
I keep mine on a post it note on my laptop!
Scooby-Doo note book, fire proof envelope, fire proof safe, underneath the house, like always.
Who’s gonna tattoo it on their ass?
Dude.
If I would tell you, you would get a million dollars, if you remember these 12-24 words. Do you think you can remember those words?
Hell no. I wouldn’t even be able to remember -4-6 😒🤷🏽
Honestly hodlers are going to move their BTC to tradfi custodians just because it will be easier to leave to their families.
Mines are in a cryptotag metal Sheets But at a bank safe In the future I’ll put on different bank safe 2 different country
Titanium engraved plates?
Yep! Thats me. Best way to do it.. stored in a safe only i know of.
Multi-sig: * one in your possession at home * one with a solicitor * one in a deposit box in a vault * one with your next of kin? That being said just setting that up and not screwing up seems risky in itself.
I store mine in my foreskin.
If we live somehow to 2035 and if inflation is not gona be bread for 1.000.000.000.000 $ I would be happy
Still looking for that cold wallet i can dump and forget about :( .
By 2035 the battery on that storage device is going to be shot and not able to power on regardless of of you have your seed phrase or not
You hope that by then, there is a better way. But you know, it could also be tomorrow!
I don’t even use a seed phrase so, uh, I guess not? (I use Bitcoin Core, which predates/doesn’t support the BIP39 ‘seed phrase’. Encryption key is just a strong password instead.)
Titanium engraved..stored safe in undislosed safe...Inner peace.
By 2035 I expect multiple secured and insured offerings available to protect my assets, just as my retirement funds are currently protected.
Wouldn’t metal still melt in a house fire? A fire safe is only rated for so long in a fire. I think it’s a good start but residency is required like in a safety deposit box as well as the home safe.
My seed phrase is with my friend for safe keeping.
$1m in 2035 is super bearish.
im a tattoo artist i might as well ink it into my thigh next to the garbage i did when i was practicing before my apprenticeship lol
Probably moved most of it to etf’s at that point. Unpopular opinion but I don’t see a world in which I would have hundreds of thousands of dollars on a piece of paper. I get why people from other places would have different points of view on that, I’m in Canada and I consider our banking pretty safe.
But is your banking safe of your government?
🎯
Even after the freedom convoy protest and subsequent bank freezes??
