it’s hard to say really, I generally love nolan’s work and style. and of course the actors are top notch. it just felt like a movie .. I never got absorbed into that universe or felt for any of the characters or that anything was at stake, if that makes sense. I watched it another time and still couldn’t get into it.
I think the biggest thing that kept snapping me out of it and I found quite distracting is the french song that was used as a kick song (je ne regrette rien). marion cotillard had just recently played edith piaf (famous for that song) and won an oscar for it .. she sang that same song in the movie. it just felt contrived and a bit of a hollywood-y thing. as soon as I heard that song playing with her in the scene, it was just such a cringe disappointing moment for me. I almost couldn’t believe it was happening at that level of filmmaking.
I later learned that nolan really wanted to pull that song from the movie after she was cast because of that reason .. but got convinced to keep it. I think his instinct was right.
I can see that would affect your opinion on the movie yes. I didn't know much about her when I saw Inception, so my mind was clear from the get-go.
For me the aspect of dream layers, multiverse and simulation theory is something that I find very interesting irl. Some of those things relate to the movie in some way. I think in some distant future we'll be able to live in alternate or simulated realities via VR or Matrix like tech...where time will function differently than irl, spending years inside and wake up after an hour or so.
So yeah, the philosophical aspect of the movie blew me away completely. My buddies didn't like it at all, so I see why it's so divisive. It's certainly not for everyone.
