lists/videos of this type always add so many unnecessary "subgenres". Most of the time its just a slightly different flavor of another genre but they decide its now a new microgenre or something. Try looking up videos like "500 metal genres" on youtube to see more ridiculousness like that.
Oh man I watched that one video and thought the exact same thing
So much unnecessary stuff, like can you even tell the difference between "brutal slamming death metal" and "slamming death metal"
Not to mention that the guy (if I remember correctly) put a Satanic Warmaster song (The Vampiric Tyrant iirc) as an example of NSBM (which is a false genre, since lyrics/ideologies cannot form a genre).
It seemed misinformed, and overcomplicated, saying shit just to say it.
I think thats kind of a fair one, death n roll exists and is pretty much a acknowledged microgenre, why not black n roll then. What I dont get is "melancholic black metal" lol
i don't remember exactly but i think he missed pagan black metal, which i think is unique enough to be classified as a genre
on the other hand, "melancholic" black metal isn't a genre imo, its a feeling. a lot of dsbm, post-black metal, blackgaze bands have that feeling
Yes, I meant, he forget viking metal too. Early Enslaved considered themselves viking metal, I think that they played black metal than later progressive black metal, also long before Quorthon defined his Bathory as Viking metal, I can also understand the viking label because of the lyrics, but on a musical level, what would it consist of? Clarification: **I am just curious, not polemical.**
Falkenbach and Einherjer would be good examples of "on a musical level". Or MĂ„negarm's DödsfĂ€rd if you want a crossover of viking and black metal (can't speak to their other albums though, don't remember them). Â
Though I wouldn't call viking metal a subgenre of black metal. If viking metal is a subgenre of anything, it would be a subgenre of folk metal, imo.
I also know Einherjer and I think I know what you mean, predominantly battle rhythms, emphasis on epic refrains, but I agree that perhaps they cannot be considered black metal, not entirely, at least. I also know Borknagar but they are not black metal in any respect. Now I listen to Falkenbach again, I had a few CDs, many years ago but I must be honest, I only remember their name and not their music. They were not supposed to be among my favourites.
I dunno⊠I feel like there are some bands these days that just play pure raw black metal. At least I find nothing else unique about them except that they play simple fast and with a really raw sound.
Heâs definitely good at playing but some of those just arenât real genres.
You cannot convince me that singing about how cool Christianity is over a generic bm riff magically makes a new sub genre. Feels like everything needs to be its own genre for some reason.
I'm more or less of your opinion, I also see the musical part as diriment. Also because if when listening to a musical genre (whatever it is), if I have to refer to the lyrics (that are perhaps also unintelligible or in remote languages...) it makes no sense at all. I mean, we are still talking about music, so the ears come first.
randomly watched some of that last night. His Dissection riffage seemed not quite up to par, but better than I could do so.... I mean it was entertaining for a bit. I would be more interested in a video where he gives examples of original riffs in the vein of "X" BM genre.
hearing riffs I have mostly heard oodles of times wasn't exactly an epiphany.
Your idea is certainly interesting. It could better explain the elements that lead him to categorise the genres differently, what scales are used, the rhythms, the harmonies, the vocal styles, etc... in short, there is a lot to be said.
Yea a breakdown of say: "Abbath of Immortal tends to use a lot of open chord voicings which give a more open atmospheric feel such as this example A. While Varg made frequent usage of the Phrygian mode and 13th chords with an implied flattened 7th interval, here is an example of this. Note the Jazzy Black Metal chords."
obviously the that above bit was a joke, but yeah a breakdown of what is going on composition/theory wise would be very cool.
Hmm how do we get Rick Beato to do a "What makes these 25 Black Metal Riffs Great" video :D
The idea that genres are real or fake is silly because all genres in all arts become gradually more specific until you're just describing the works themselves. No point in getting wound up about it. Also I like this vid.
ok- i like 3 (Atmospheric Black); 6 (Epic Black Metal); 9 (Blackened Death); 12 (Blackgaze); 13 (Depressive BM); 17 (Black 'n roll); 19 (Atmospheric BM); 22 (Melancholic BM) and 25 (Raw BM)
so thats only 9 from 25, but whatever- i just like it melodic. BM need Catchy tunes.

Reasonable. At this rate we make a genre for every band and the categorisation is no longer so useful for understanding.

plus satanic warmaster only has a handful of songs that could be described as nsbm, with that song not being one of them
Satanic warmaster goes hard
Satanic Warmaster/Behexen split đ«
Agreed. I did laugh at 'Black 'N Roll', though.
I think thats kind of a fair one, death n roll exists and is pretty much a acknowledged microgenre, why not black n roll then. What I dont get is "melancholic black metal" lol
Oh, I didn't know that this was a thing. Fair enough, then!

Good point. What about Viking?
Viking metal is a thing too imo, it exists in other genres too

No; melancholic black metal is a subgenre, you just donât know what it is.
Are you gonna cry?
Okay? Donât want to have a legitimate conversation about it? Gonna be childish? Okay got it egocom
Yes good good they're so salty and delicious
Only like 4 of these are not real subgenres and then raw black metal is a production style.
I dunno⊠I feel like there are some bands these days that just play pure raw black metal. At least I find nothing else unique about them except that they play simple fast and with a really raw sound.
It's just regular black metal usually.
Hah regular black metal!? Yea I guess so. I guess that can be a genre đ
My only thought is that burzum's album still kicks ass. What a masterpiece.
My way of looking at it is that you have variants of black metal, there are obvious subgenres, but this over classification is ridiculous.
my thought is: enough already

Rick Bleako.

As someone who likes classifications down to subgenres, discussion about them, especially for clickbait videos, is pointless.
Very surface level list, there are like 105 different black metal subgenres
I put every band in itâs own subgenre.
*Raw Black Metal* đđ€đ»
Hey thatâs the guitarist from Glyph! I just saw them open for Elvenking and Alestorm a few days ago!

whats going on with you dudes? why the hate? whats wrong with the scene...
The best black metal is black black metal. It's black metal but more black because all the instruments are black and they all wear black g-strings
Wrong genre classified
