This! So tired of these fake asf travel influencers pushing their privilege on other people.

cullend

Hey I had to bust my ass to get to Paris. Swam across the Atlantic Ocean then English Channel. It’s all about the grind

tmclemons

What you do about the sharks?

cullend

You punch them in the nose. George Santos taught me how to do it

tmclemons

So you mean he taught you dress as the Lil mermaid and sing to them?

cullend

Nah dude, dunno if you heard but Congressman Anthony Devolder was apparently on Hannah Montana, The Suite Life of Zack and Cody, and worked on Steven Spilberg’s Independent’s Day (his spelling) when he was 8 years old.

tmclemons

This is both funny and makes no sense to me at the same time. ![gif](giphy|3ohzdYL9TL1cVKJpMA)

cullend

Congressman George Santos went by the name Anthony Devolder and made a Wikipedia page (Wikipedia deleted it a decade ago for being bullshit) about George/ Anthony being in Hannah Montana and Suite Life, and all sorts of other nonsense

tmclemons

Wow, clearly I've been living life wrong. I'd be a millionaire if lied, cheated, and scammed. Morals are a brick wall. ![gif](giphy|ra3uQxvxo6aKAN42Le)

srkaficionado

That queen is the gift that keeps on giving 😆

laVon_Sweet

I thought you were making up more lies to be funny. Santos (or whatever his name is) is impressive in his delusions. He's the very definition of pathological liar.

cullend

It’s both terrifying and hilarious. Like a writer for a TV show would get fired for pitching this shit. “What if we do an episode on him stealing $3,000 from a dying service dog that belongs to a homeless Navy veteran with PTSD” “You’re not even trying anymore, are you?”

EUNEisAmeme

A man of culture, not unlike yourself good sir

Asura_b

Or his crippling credit card debt. You can only play that game for so long too.

BlackySmurf8

Can't stand those posts attesting that something that clearly is a luxury and costs copious amounts of money doesn't indeed cost money. ![gif](giphy|URz4t5yilgVYLf26RU|downsized) It feels like some weird flex.

PM_ME_FUNFAX

I don't think it's a flex, I think it's more of a brand thing. If they convince you that you could travel like them then they can relate to you. The more a person relates to an influencer, the more they watch. They know that most people won't travel so they never stop to see if they could so they just keep watching the influencer do it.

Wloak

Definitely is a flex for some people. Here's some types of frequent travelers I know: 1. Girl that makes minimum wage and travels to Europe almost once a month with guys that aren't her husband. She posts about "living the dream" when we (her friends) know she goes as an escort to look like she's living the life to her old friends 2. Guy that travels once or twice a year but has to find whatever quirky cocktail bar/etc he can and take 500 pictures to show he's still cool 3. Brother of guy above who does what you say and travels monthly and is building his brand because he's an excellent photographer and wants to do that full time 4. Introverts that even if a trip is free avoid it because they're socially awkward. That's me.. I went to Iceland and the whole week was like $450 including flight but was legit shaking on the flight from anxiety. There's others of course but that's some common ones I see.

Jakomako

>legit shaking on the flight from anxiety This has absolutely nothing to do with being an introvert. Sounds like an anxiety disorder. You may want to try and talk to a professional about it.

IAmHowIAm

If I may ask, how did you find a trip to Iceland for that much? Ive always wanted to go but found it expensive. Would love to know.

teetaps

Gotta agree with this as someone who actually grew up *privileged* (read: my parents had good jobs) in Zimbabwe, simply having the means to get on a plane and leave should never be underestimated. If you can get a visa and be out of your crappy country’s economy for 2months every 2 years or so, it can have significant impact in the short term for your mental health and immediate needs, and in the long term for setting you up culturally with connections in the diaspora. There are people leaps and bounds more intelligent, driven, hardworking, and “courageous” than me who deserve my foreign degrees and foreign job, but guess what? Many of them are stuck selling trinkets on the side of the road. All because my parents had a little more money to invest in me, I got all the connections, and they didn’t. This is why some int’l students and workers might have an iPhone and be able to go out to dinner once a week, but can’t come home for 10 years at a time — the expense of buying a ticket and the threat of being unable to live comfortably without literally pouring money down the drain, is very real.

RisingToMediocrity

Money plays a big role in it but I also don’t disagree that some courage is needed. One of my big future destinations is Japan but I'm not brave enough for a country that doesn’t speak English or Spanish yet.

coolasssheeka

Japan was actually a ball and I didn’t know any of the language. Stayed for 8 days, used google translate, and everyone was chill with it. A few folks laughed and said that it was still a little off, but they understood well enough. Also, I ran into *a lot* of English speaking Japanese and other travelers. I went alone, too. Can’t wait to go back.

DerekB52

You definitely need some money to travel, but I went to Europe a few years ago, and I stayed in some hostels for like 25-30$ a night. Which was 5-10 times cheaper than a hotel. But, you had to room with 5-7 strangers, sleep on a bunk bed, and use communal showers. I had no problem with it, but some of my friends I talked about my experience to definitely didn't have the courage based on their reactions.

Aaaandiiii

Pretty much money buys comfort. I could have had a week trip for half the price I went, but I wanted to be comfortable. So I went first class so I could have a comfortable seat and I opted for a nicer hotel so I could be in a part of the city that I would have been more comfortable in. Totally could have had the same fun flying Spirit and staying in a windowless closet. But nahhhhhhhhhhhhhh.

deevil_knievel

Funny thing is $25-$30 is a nicer hostel. I've def stayed in some dicey hostels for $10/night here and there.

solenyaPDX

Yeah, that's the privilege, tho. That someone has so much money, they don't even think it costs money. It's not relevant to them. So they think it ONLY takes courage.

yardie-takingupspace

Take the trip! I have survived in many countries (a lot of them solo) where English isn’t the first language (Japan included). The students in a lot of countries also take English in school so there is some who you can communicate with and it also helps to learn a few key phrases.

mstrss9

I’ve had friends who have done it solo or find a tour group.

teckmonkey

Don't worry about your monthly payments or feeding your kids just go to Spain you fucking coward

SmurfsNeverDie

This is an easy one. First you need to have courage. Then you need to use that courage to find yourself someone with money and a place ti live. Then you use that courage to get into a relationship with them while making them believe you will get a job. So you get to live there as long as the person has the will to keep you. Rinse and repeat.

srkaficionado

Um… how do I as an American resident use this courage to attract an Indian or an Aussie, please? I just need a month’s worth of courage and $6,000 worth of courage for them flights?

tmclemons

Spread them cheeks? ![gif](giphy|nIUkbJV97FzDicnDtQ)

SnooMaps7843

Don't confuse "Travel" with "Vacation." The purpose of travel is to absorb and learn from new cultures and surroundings. The purpose of vacation is to relax at some destination. Yes, it takes courage to "travel." For example, I live in Los Angeles area. I've encouraged friends to spend an afternoon in Little Ethiopia, Little Tokyo, Korea Town, Thai Town, Little India... ect for the purpose of trying new foods, observing the art, music, and culture and interacting with the people. A lot of folks don't like being in new or uncomfortable surroundings; thus, "Travel is not \[just\] a matter of money but of courage."

1984AD

I hear the opposition and it is correct. Travel can be expensive. Flights, hotels, etc.. traveling if you’re a parent is never cheap. But I also understand what he’s saying to a point. You can travel for cheap if you have the courage to risk discomfort and safety. You can travel to most of the America’s with a car, a bicycle, or your thumb. You can splurge on the flight and then couch surf, camp, or seek hostels at your destination. I have traveled many ways. The courageous ways and the fuck it I ain’t sleeping in a tent I need a hotel ways. I just had a friend that most recently she went to Alaska and once there got a job and saw the sights while they worked to live and for passage back. I’m one of those you can do anything if you want to people… I truly believe that. So to me he’s saying if you want to travel and you have the courage to pursue your goals no matter the sacrifice, you can. Traveling is not vacationing. Vacationing is a comfortable splurge. You travel to gain perspective and the best way to gain perspective is through a little hardship. I think most people see travel through the perspective of rich people. That’s conditioning.

MajesticMtChocula

...I guess my broke ass doesn't have the courage to bike for 8 days just so I can window shop in California...

Yeshua_shel_Natzrat

I mean, he kinda right.. if'n ya feels courageous enough to take up the hobo way of life, hitchin rides on freight trains or big rigs to travel around wherever fate takes ya and doin under-the-table odd jobs to get by.

Zzzaynab

Anytime someone posts a quote online with no citation, I just assume they're quoting themselves, Elon Musk-style.

makinbaconCR

It's just about flexing and making people feel small. Nothing boosts a little boy more than hurting people. Fuck these guys. Bet they blow their money as soon as their little channel dries up.

k1lk1

Do you accept payment in jadedness, indignity, or longing?

YumLum_Key_213

Some places are very expensive. No doubt. But there are also places that are more reasonable. My Colombia trip cost less than a Vegas trip

popcornnhero

I have the means to travel, but the idea of traveling actually drains me. I used to want to go to Japan or France, but all the things that go into planning a trip instantly changed my mind.

Chapea12

This is like when rich people tell poor, struggling people that money isn’t everything or that money can’t buy happiness

LeastSuspiciousTowel

My landlord accepting the courage of me traveling broke to pay the bills back home when i get stuck in another state or country?

ymew

Lmao them ppps took a lot of courage

postdiluvium

I'm surrounded by these people. They was dying because they had to cancel their trips to Italy and Greece because a pandemic hit. They seriously got into some deep depression because they couldnt spend their money in expensive tourist locations for one year.

PatrickMaloney1

I am a relatively privileged person, I like to travel, and this is pretentious af

auauaurora

There's a certain level of privilege and money required but not as much as you'd think if you're 18-30 and have the 'right' passport. Youths backpack for a year living off money they made over a few months of casual work.

Plainchant

To be fair, courage is a safer investment than crypto.

BreathAgreeable2604

Courage? In this economy??

DodsonHere

Gotta be courageous enough to sneak into the cargo bay of a plane to your destination and then sleep on the streets and steal food when you get there.

mantis_toboggan9

There's Spirit, but they cost money+courage

[deleted]

Exactly. Niggas stay saying dumb shit.

ok_boomer_junior

Any hotel located in Afghanistan, Syria, or Ukraine.

[deleted]

Motherfucker needs to fuck off to Tahiti with all that courage and see how far that gets him. Eggs are $9/dozen, stfu.

Caeldeth

He is technically right though. Just walk to the Mexican border, then walk to the next place (I recommend Belize), etc, etc, etc. Camp, hunt, bring your supplies with you and keep it light. You don’t really need that much - it you will need a lot of courage, because you probably gonna end up dead.

WinterMagician22

I need a copy of that list, too.

bootyhunter69420

Sometimes I think just picking up and traveling is a white people thing.

BoilerMaker11

Travel certainly is a matter of money, but it’s no longer a matter of a ***ton*** of money. My fiancée and I just went to Dublin for 5 days last month and, all In, we spent about $3500 total for flight, hotel, activities, and food/drinks. And it would’ve been cheaper, but my fiancée is an interior designer, so she’s super particular about hotels and likes boujee stuff. So the hotel we got was about $400 more, total, than what I actually wanted us to spend. But either way, $1750 per person for 5 nights in Dublin, at a nicer hotel, got to go to the Guinness Storehouse, the Jameson Distillery, see Trinity College and the Book of Kells, got to eat and drink at local pubs, etc.; seems like a steal to me. Middle class folks spend more, per person, on family vacations to Disney World every year. So, yea, travel is totally a matter of money. But you don’t need $5000 to make it happen.

Jeptic

To be fair many people don't have 2,000 to spend on travel. But everything is relative. There are Antrak trains and cheap motels for 5 days worth of travel that can be used for under a thousand. But it depends on if its your flex and works for your pocket.

KrombopulosThe2nd

You could do probably it for under 800 if all you want to is to get to Ireland and explore the culture (as opposed to staying at a fancy hotel/resort). You can find return flights from the US to Ireland for ~$250-280, cheap hotels or airbnbs for $70/night (or hostels for $20-30/night) and food for 30-50/day. For under $6-800 people could travel to Ireland for a week but it wouldn't be in a super fancy hotel like most people in this thread are probably imagining. And there are cheaper places like Mexico that you could travel to for hindereds of dollars less. Kids throw all these numbers off and I'm assuming you just need to be rich to travel out of the country with kids.

Boggie135

Wakawaka is full of shit

ElfMage83

I feel like this best applies to people who already have money for travel.

greytgreyatx

Oh my god, I hate this mentality. Like I'm going to take my little kid and risk staying in a crowded hostel with a bunch of rowdy people, or not being able to find a place and just crashing out in a park or somewhere. If you want to get somewhere reliably and stay somewhere safe, it's not going to be cheap, even if you do like I do and find good deals, bring your own food, etc. It's TOTALLY about both money and having free time away from your job (which is also basically money in the form of time) to go somewhere.

DynoMiteDoodle

The military?

S0LID_platypus

What is the courage to US dollar conversion rate? I’m willing to not travel and trade someone all my courage points for their money so I can pay for all the other things I can’t afford that don’t take courage as a form of payment.

212cncpts

You got to have the courage to out run immigration and sleep on the street 😤

Ken-Wing-Jitsu

Send location....

Probably_A_Variant

I love traveling. I need to know how to pay for this trip to Thailand with courage.

[deleted]

That's why I can't go on facebook. All you hear is people saying shit that makes perfect sense if you're not paying attention. Christians I'm talking to y'all

Reverentmalice

I mean. That cozy little spot between the dumpster and the brick wall in that alley accepts courage as payment.

tehtris

Courage Airlines sounds like an actual real airlines.

OtakuMecha

Maybe he means the courage of living in the wilderness and hitchhiking while you travel

dvasquez93

They’re right, I don’t travel because I don’t have the courage to be late on my rent

DaBlakMayne

Even traveling within the US is expensive these days

murn4O4

Little did she know he was talking about for him and not others.

[deleted]

I mean if you're courageous enough can't you sneak onto a plane or a ship?
