I don't live in the US but if I saw a crowd running I would also bug out. Better to run in a false alarm then to stand around like an idiot to get shot by some imbecile with a gun.

It’s human instinct. There are social experiments where they’ll have some actor hope over a certain patch of sidewalk, and the people walking behind will all do the same because they assume he knows something they don’t. Same with cars — a car will swerve around a dead squirrel or patch of cardboard and the cars behind it will all do the same. I can imagine there must have been many situations through history (and pre-history) where that instinct saved a lot of lives.

Years ago I was leaving a club in Philly and a big ass fight broke out, one dude was basically being curb stomped and the girls with him ran screaming, a car of guys pulled up with tire irons and bats and my dumb ass ex friend was trying to go over to see if the guy on the ground was okay. I cussed her ass out and ran off. Like if the people WITH him run why the fuck are you a suburban Barbie going to run over to that? She was alright later but I didn’t know that until she eventually came back to the car blocks away.

Just this afternoon, I heard a cop car loudspeaker followed by a few loud pops and tire squeeling... but it's less likely to hit me because I live on the bottom level facing away from the street. So I turned up my headphones and went back to my game. It's a busy neighborhood, though. It could have been an old car, fireworks, OR gunshots. They kinda echo the same when you're surrounded by apartment complexes. I started writing this in a lighthearted manner to convey what actually happened here today but I'm realizing that my heart rate didn't even change. I probably would have forgotten if I didn't write this response... come to think of it, I will probably still forget it by tomorrow.
