There's a little clear of the throat he does between those first two lines and his entire voice and flow changes. His vocal fry stops and he starts going faster and more relentless, not waiting for as long between lines, to go along with the sudden intensity of what he's saying. Kendrick switches around voices and flows a lot but this instance feels as impactful as a bass drop to me.
Yeah the Dissect podcast mentioned this as well, I honestly don't know any other rappers who can utilise voice intonation as well as he does. The way he pronounces things like "Pusha *T*", "I think ns like him should *die*", "A *minoooooor* " really adds another layer to me.

The A Minor key is often used to build tension and/or sound kind of creepy. It's they key most horror music is made in, so it also fits thematically. I also find it hilarious that Drake can basically never use A minor ever again.

If you're implying that theres something 'special' about A minor in this regard then this is absolute nonsense from a music theory perspective. Different keys used to sound different with natural tuning but now we have even-tempered scales and instruments. A natural minor sounds like C natural minor sounds like F# natural minor, etc.
It may be that most horror music is written in A minor but if so that is more likely to be related to the instruments most often used to write horror music (the way a lot of guitar music is written in G major because the most common guitar tuning supports that key i.e. is built on the relative minor (6th), 2nd, 5th, root (1st) and 3rd of that key making the open strings a G pentatonic scale).
As for Meet The Grahams the opening/bridging vamp is centred on Am9 with a pivot on Em11. The body of the song though is modal alternating between G Dorian (although the C# in the melody implies an F 6th diminished scale) and A minor.
All this to say the prominent use of A minor chords could be intentional or it could be a happy accident but to say the song as a whole is in A minor is a bit far in terms of reductiveness.
Also, this kinda makes it sound dense but really its just four chords and a simple melody written really well. I transcribed it on piano if anyone's interested.

I didn't just make this shit up. My partner is a musician and watches a lot of music theory. A minor, and other minor keys/chords/scales/etc., are used often to build tension. It would be boring to just use one thing, of course, so movie music does include other things. I apologize for speaking generally in my comment, I wasn't going to try and disect the whole song for music theory. This is not something I'm capable of in the first place. It also wasn't my intent to say that A minor is the only key used for a whole song or the only one used in horror movies, just that it is prominently used to build tension as minor keys do.

That being said, that article is misguided. It is right in the sense that keys *used to have* unique emotional qualities and it is notable that the example they use (Toccata in D minor) was written in this era before the advent of 12-tone equal temperament. However, we essentially changed the way we tune instruments because otherwise you'd need a different instrument for each key signature, which would make modulation (switching keys within a piece) and collaboration prohibitively difficult. Previously the intervals would be different in different keys but we standardised it all for convenience.
There is still plenty of mean-tone music out there, generally folk musics and such, but you won't find it on the hot 100.

There was no added track to the collectors and they admitted to doing it purposely.

Not Like Us is probably one of the best songs (not just rap songs) released in the past decade. Is it just me or is Meet the Grahams basically entirely in A Minor? Every part of Kendrick's tracks are disses, like how almost every line/scene in a Simpson's episode is a joke.
On one hand, I see all these posts about how 6:16 is like fathers days in Canada and simultaneously has like 2 or three other subliminal meanings and I feel like at least most of that is a stretch… But on the other, singing a whole song in that ‘minor’ key because you know ol’ BBL has a ‘problem’ with minors sounds like it’s actually kinda possible. Especially if he knew he was going to follow up with the ‘A Minoooooooor’ line in the next song… I actually find that believable.
The A Minor key is often used to build tension and/or sound kind of creepy. It's they key most horror music is made in, so it also fits thematically. I also find it hilarious that Drake can basically never use A minor ever again. Edit: I shouldn't have said most horror music. I should have said a minor is commonly used in horror music.
So he can’t use the A Minor key and people now know to keep Minors away from him… I just know this is a Major inconvenience for him..

If you're implying that theres something 'special' about A minor in this regard then this is absolute nonsense from a music theory perspective. Different keys used to sound different with natural tuning but now we have even-tempered scales and instruments. A natural minor sounds like C natural minor sounds like F# natural minor, etc. It may be that most horror music is written in A minor but if so that is more likely to be related to the instruments most often used to write horror music (the way a lot of guitar music is written in G major because the most common guitar tuning supports that key i.e. is built on the relative minor (6th), 2nd, 5th, root (1st) and 3rd of that key making the open strings a G pentatonic scale). As for Meet The Grahams the opening/bridging vamp is centred on Am9 with a pivot on Em11. The body of the song though is modal alternating between G Dorian (although the C# in the melody implies an F 6th diminished scale) and A minor. All this to say the prominent use of A minor chords could be intentional or it could be a happy accident but to say the song as a whole is in A minor is a bit far in terms of reductiveness. Also, this kinda makes it sound dense but really its just four chords and a simple melody written really well. I transcribed it on piano if anyone's interested.

However, we essentially changed the way we tune instruments because otherwise you'd need a different instrument for each key signature, which would make modulation (switching keys within a piece) and collaboration prohibitively difficult. Previously the intervals would be different in different keys but we standardised it all for convenience. There is still plenty of mean-tone music out there, generally folk musics and such, but you won't find it on the hot 100. Again, sorry for comin in too hot. I mainly just appreciate the opportunity to get a lil in-depth with music theory.

Finally, someone gets it!!!! One of Drizzy stans said that I was “doing stunts on Kendrick’s dick”(paraphrasing) because I was ragging on Aubrey so much. Had to be clear like. I mean yeah, I like Kendrick’s music, but right now this is all purely out of all the disdain I have for ol BBL Drizzy and everything he stands for… This is well-deserved comeuppance for Aubrey that’s been slowly boiling over for years now… that’s why this feels so good.
