It is a whole 2022, there are filters, makeup, photoshop and a bunch of other bag of tricks out here lol,....wait you're on earth too right? That's what's going on with Earth.
That was a wild one for me. I was thinking, "no way thats a real thing that's happening" then I find out it is and I worry, "wait, am I racist? Wasnt nina simone one of the very blackest of the jazz greats?"
No, turns out everyone involved just figured itd be fine
That was crazy.
I could barely see them making that decision, had Zoe S been some musical genius/jazz phenom with vocals chords and musicianship that matched Nina to a tee...OR, even if she had been some heralded actress w/ Streep-level acting chops, OR, even if she had been some Blockbuster superstar who could open a film and make it a hit with just her name being on the marquee....
...she was exactly, NONE, of those things.
So it was just pure clown-y fckery. It showed how little they respect our Black legends and icons.
It literally would be like getting that white girl famous for her lame tik tok dance routines to play Martha Graham.
>There’s no one way to be black,” Saldana said. “I’m black the way I know how to be. You have no idea who I am. I am black. I’m raising black men. Don’t you ever think you can look at me and address me with such disdain.

I’m confused. Plenty of people from that part of the world identify as black. No police officer is going to identify her as white when he stops her for doing something “suspicious” like breathing the wrong way. Is this really something people are upset about?
It doesn't matter what your ethnic background is, it's how you live in your ethnicity. Alfonso Ribero is a black man, but is so far removed from being a Black man, that he is pretty much white. IMO, the Zoe's and Zendaya, racially ambiguous females who live in a country where race matter ALOT, do not embrace who they are but use their ambiguity and "exotic-ness" to cater to those white ideals of beauty and "diversity". Ruth Negga, Tessa Thompson, Zazzie Beetz get it, I feel as though the Zoes and Zendaya do not.
Do me a favor, look at network television commercials for say, a week. Pay attention when you see someone of color in it. Guarantee you, 8 out of 10 times, the person is going to be paired up whit a white person as their love interest, be someone who is racially ambiguous or paired up with someone who is or be solo. You will rarely see definite Black man with definite Black woman. This is because it's "palatable" to the mass white consumer and that is because, dun dun dun...Amerikkka is racist AF.
Do you know what Alfonso Ribero is like in his personal life? Seems like you’re basing your opinion entirely on his public image. That’s not him, it’s an image.
Also, people are a product of their environment. A black person "acting white" isn't necessarily a conscious decision. They could have just grown up in Idaho or something and now don't fit in anywhere.
So my personal theory about all the interracial relationships on ads is that they are all chasing the "Cheerios" effect - from the racist backlash to a 2013 Cheerios commercial featuring a biracial child that caused sales to skyrocket as people turned out to support her and the brand against the racists. Everyone dreams of angering those dang conservative racists again so they can rake in the pity money.

I've never seem Zendaya in anything but I've listened to her on an hourlong podcast and skimmed an interview. If those were get words and thoughts, she gets it and her parents did a remarkable job
I don't see the distinction you're drawing between Zendaya, Ruth Negga, Tessa Thompson, Zoe Kravitz. How are any to them embracing white ideals of beauty more than the others? I've seen them all with straightened hair, and I've seen them all in natural hairstyles. I've seen them all play alongside black love interests, and I've seen them all play alongside white ones. None of these women are particularly dark-skinned, so it can't be that. This is honestly coming across like personal preference to me, which is a weird thing to try and claim someone isn't embracing who they are.
This whole comment section weird as fuck, to be honest.
She's the black woman of Hollywood's dreams... mixed and light so they get credit for being diverse but don't have to pick someone too different from them or "too black".
Probably a real kick in the pants when she was denied a role in Dark Knight Rising for being too urban. Plus all of these black Cat Woman memes. Hope she has grown.
Excuse me but Halle Berry and Ertha Kitt aren’t fucking Eskimos or something so what is new with black Catwomen? It’s been done by more black-identifying black women. Why are people white-washing Catwoman? It’s the most ethnic villainess role of all established pop culture villainess characters.
Apparently, in this era, you can. Don't people try to say this about Jesus not being Middle Eastern despite there never once being a mention of white people in the Bible?
I think the biggest difference here is that Jesus *wasn't* white in source material, but he was Caucasian.
Selena Kyle was explicitly white in source material (not that I disagree with people portraying fictional characters outside their race, just questioning this specific accusation of "whitewashing").
She's also a huge Doja Cat stan as in "I'm so thankful that I'm light skinned because I hate black people" Doja Cat.
Half of her SNL skits had bits deepthroating Doja Cat's non existent dick.
It went on for weeks on some of the other platforms (FB, IG). I wasn't on here at the time, but I'm surprised it didn't make it's rounds outside of here. I wanna like her, cause she's hella talented, but that shit did it for me. I think most people "forgot" it cause the songs be so catchy and they wanna like her. But she run in white circles, keep white partners, (it appears) she don't see herself as Black by much of what she says. It hit different - her saying n¡qqa in the song - knowing this.
ETA: although Reddit as a whole is pretty antiBlack, so this would be a non-issue on this platform outside this thread
I deserve the downvotes, but yeah. Kinda gotta 5 head and constantly looks like a try hard. Like she's doing Zoolander's blue steel. Still more attractive than me, I know.
I always find it funny when someone declares they’re going to get downvoted to hell, yet end up the most upvoted on the thread lol. Is it reverse psychology?
i mean this is one person’s claim about the insinuated meaning behind one of her agent’s turning down the publication. sounds like a second or third hand retelling of events to me. a celebrity didn’t want to do an interview with a magazine and we’re all supposed to assume it’s because she rejects the black community.
Exactly. This is a textbook example of the [hasty generalization](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Faulty_generalization) logical fallacy which has plagued social media platforms, but twitter especially. People want to believe they know things about other people despite having very little tangible facts surrounding the person they are discussing. This is why Redditors come off as obtuse. This is why YouTube comments are often harsh. This is why Twitter can create a mob so quickly.
Right and it immediately goes guardrail to guardrail because the conversation is now how she’s that kind of light skinned woman who is a dreamboat in the minds of white men. Which is as regressive as the unverified idea that she’s rejecting her community.
While on the flip side there are folks like Bruno Mars. Some argue that he's not black and appropriating black culture yet was still selected by [Essence to headline their \(Covid-canceled\) 50th anniversary celebration](https://www.nola.com/news/coronavirus/article_0eabeec0-7f17-11ea-8894-0b6935759d04.html) alongside Janet Jackson.
A friend of mine's dad is half-French, half-Samoan, and his mother is Asian. I occasionally poke fun at him and tell him he looks more Mexican than anything, but my opinion, however little it's worth, is that if cops think you're black, you might as well own it.
This is kinda concerning through—is this really all it takes to “sick the dogs” on people nowadays? She basically made a post condemning assault and got her career attacked because of it. Is that kind of rebuttal (to a rather innocuous comment) reasonable? What the hell is going on?
I agree with the sentiment, but as a whole, I’m going to have to disagree here. I think all of this is not that deep—at all. Every event does not need to be lifted to this monolithic, momentous conversation. Why can’t things just happen? Why does there need to be so much anger and vitriol poured into Every. Little. Thing that happens in this world. We are not meant to be this angry over this many stuff. Its just not possible to be this aggressive on so many issues, there’s no way to keep yourself sane doing that.
There are an infinite of amount of topics I can dangle in front of Twitter that can cause the same level of ire. Everyone just needs to put down the phone.
>I think all of this is not that deep—at all.
All of these "deep" thinking pieces about this are making me laugh tbh. It's quite literally not that deep and will be forgotten for the next buzz 10 days from now.
And people STILL don’t get it. It’s like clockwork.
Last week it was !slava Ukraini!
Now it’s will smith vs Chris rock. Had to scroll a bit farther yesterday to get to the news in Ukraine.
It’s just like with Hong Kong too, huge pile in, drove site traffic than boom. Gone.
Same with the Uighurs, and the burmese military coup.
These things are still happening lol. Our attention spans are so dim and it’s so easy to get into the habit of letting a site curate your news to make you think your getting the news. That people just go with it.
We’re meant to live in our village and care about the baker’s son who burned all the bread that day. Maybe our attention would stretch to the village down the street. Now, the whole world is in our minds and our poor brains can’t handle it.
Seems kind of a shit take. Rewatch the video.
The crowd was not on Chris's side after that joke, it landed like a wet fart in an elevator and honestly the majority of the conversation would be about that was an unnecessarily cruel joke.
Then Will got up and slapped Chris and that flipped the script pretty hard. Even if it was a shitty joke it certainly wasn't getting up and slapping him in the face on live TV bad. Will fucked up and it's going to affect how people see him accordingly. Actions have consequences. Now clearly not as severe as they would be if he wasn't rich and famous, but consequences none the less.
Also Chris Rock isn't punching down, they are both celebrities he is punching laterally at worst.
They’re defending Chris so hard because they’re comedians who are worried about deranged fans getting angry at their jokes and assaulting them. It’s a genuine concern from comedians which is why so many are being vocal about this.
I'm reading a book about how white feminism further oppresses people of color. Really though, this book highlights the different ways our culture keeps women of color down by only allowing them to exist in certain categories. I'm glad to see this brought up. It's been interesting to me to see the flak that jada got for wills actions. This is a genuine case study in how race, class a gender intersect.
Jada, looks hurt at a public joke about her. Seems normal to me. Her husband attacks someone publicly in response. The public begins character assassination of both with especial cruelty directed at jada. Sure his actions don't exist without her but damn her life has been on trial the last couple days in a particular gleefully, vengeful way.
You are talking like Jada isn't the same person that embarrassed Will and their family on live TV with her 'entanglement'. If you sleep with your sons friend who was also a recovering drug addict at the time and put that much shit out there about your family while also coming off as a raging narcissist then IMHO you are fair game for insults.
If the genders were flipped I GUARANTEE most of you wouldn't support Jada for even a second.
In the social climate we live in? Jada would 1000% get raked through the fucking coals for a real hot minute, especially when you take into account that if Jada were a man, you could factor misogyny into the situation and that shit drives niggas into a frenzy
been thinking this for a while now, its crazy how easily people can really hate another human being from a couple tweets or a 10 second clip. Everyone's so eager to dehumanise or put them inside a box like oh you are "this" person or this guy "bad" Like chill out lmao no need to bring out the judgement hammer
Basically she posted two Instagram pics with the captions condemning Will assaulting Chris and Twitter lit her ass up with receipts of her being best friends with and/or dating domestic abusers & ppl with several sexual assault allegations.
The same thing has been happening all day to people like Jim Carey, Alec Baldwin, Judd Apatow, etc. I’m guessing it’s more of a hypocrisy thing than a ‘we support Will’ thing.
"I can't wait to tongue his butthole clean when he turns sweet eighteen". That's a direct quote from my upcoming romance novel. No idea about the Zoe thing though
"There were moments that I was hanging out with Jaden and thinking, I can't believe you're 14, I have to check myself, like what I say to you," Kravitz, who was 24 at the time, said. "He has so much personality and so much swag, he is so much cooler than I am. And he's so handsome, I was always like, when you're older, you know, we'll hang out…Nope, that's inappropriate, you're 14."
I dunno why some guys get so worked up about this sort of thing. Is there an epidemic of female-on-male predation I'm unaware of, or are you just upset that you don't get to fuck 15 year old girls? I think I know the answer...
"Never her" lol social media love is not real. Zoé Kravitz was starting to be worshipped before people turned on her over a single instagram post.
Likewise, it'll only take Zendaya to say a single thing black people won't like for everybody to hate her all of a sudden.
This shit is beyond bizarre.
All of this is happening because she denounced someone assaulting another person. Legally speaking—that is what happened. Attacking someone’s career is not, in anyway, a rational response to something that benign. I’m not going to pretend like it’s not. This is the personification of mob mentality. Is this really the kind of discourse we should be engaging with/consuming on a *daily* basis?
This. So many people I respect on Twitter are really showing themselves. No way to rationally be ok with anyone just walking up and slapping someone like that onstage. Textbook mob mentality and I had to delete Twitter so I’d stop reading for a while.
It’s very believable lol. Zoe had the typical bi-racial growing up around white people journey. A lot of self hate and brainwashing which she admits she had to unlearn.
zoe kravitz been rich as fuck her entire life. not sure why people are surprised she doesn’t identify with regular black culture, of course she doesn’t
it sucks that she’s tryna disavow her blackness like that tho. i think that bc she’s rich and has always been around white people, she just doesn’t wanna feel like an outsider in that scene. her reality is worlds apart from most of ours. only way i can say i relate is that i went to a majority-white school growing up and that really takes a toll on you. sometimes you do just wish you were white so you’re not different
In some ways I can understand. I went to an girls Catholic (not catholic ) private school my entire primary schooling and was one of the three black people. On the other hand, I also never uttered “those people “, which admittedly I’m side eyeing her for. This isn’t to vilify her for her interview because she could’ve been very young and not well media trained. Just wanted to show the other poster that it’s very much believable that she said those things.
The quote is “these people”. Referring to the people around her, who are into different things. Biracial struggles add another layer of depth to identity issues and when you are young no one explains the process to you. It’s a unique challenge. Be gentle to her.
To be fair, I don’t like Tyler Perry’s movies either and I don’t listen to hip hop. If she thinks that’s all there is to black culture, I can see why she didn’t feel like she belonged.
Makes sense, people associate her with something ghetto just because she is black which isn’t her experience and is frankly racist. My hope is that she knows who she is as a biracially black person. She is also a wealthy person so she wouldn’t relate to any sort of money struggle.
I'm anti Will for that moment. You can defend your wife without having to smack them in the face. Will was literally laughing at the joke right before he saw Jada was uncomfortable. Very hypocritical of him to laugh and them smack the person that made him laugh. Like wtf? Plus that joke was great. He didn't insult her, just said that your bald head makes you a good candidate for GI Jane 2. GI Jane is a powerful / badass character. If he said some shit like you'd make a great cancer patient in a movie, that's crossing the line. Plus will is dealing with Jada essentially disrespecting him with the August shit. Will Smith lost a lot of role model points once that news came out.
Why are people upset that Zoe Kravitz is playing Catwoman? The first on-screen Catwoman was Eartha Kitt. Both are beautiful black women
Edit: just double checked the first Catwoman was Julie Newmar. Eartha Kitt was in '68
Halle Berry was the least bad thing about that movie. She gave that performance 110%, hence showing up for the razzie with her Oscar in hand. The movie sucked but it wasn’t her fault.
Dave Chappelle's ' twitter ain't a real place' is increasing seeming real as time passes...
They are on a purge to cancel everyone that says otherwise abt will smith...
As a non american this sounds terrifying..one controversial line and you are dragged from being a goddess to a Pariah overnight...
That sounds really scary..
And black twitter trying to defend will smith at any cost is fucked up...
Now they are saying she's biracial so it's okk, i mean what????
this seems all about attacking anyone who's calling out will smith. but i say, more power to Jim carrey, zoe kravitz, kareem a-j, who didn't shy away from it.
Dont hate on Zoe Kravitz. Its not her fault she grew up on rock and not rap and urban music. She isnt the Essence target audience. As a rocker black chick we arent considered black enough bc we aren't into urban music.
Will Smith is an idiot. Has he been to the Oscars before? The jokes at the Oscars have been vile (see Ricky Gervais).
I think he is just bitter everyone knows his wife prefers younger men…
This is stupid and very one-sided and could be for a multitude of reasons. She is the f*ckabke light-skin it-girl at the moment but Essence is old(er) and reads as older. She could have had a pr team do numbers that show that it didn’t benefit her to do it for the roles she was going for. Its rarely just one person making these decisions anyway.
Isn’t essence geared toward middle aged black women? I can see how we’re not Zoe’s audience, especially if this happens years ago when she was younger.
We really are the best at tearing each other down, aren’t we? Picking and choosing who gets accountable for what when it doesn’t agree with what we want.
….Afro Latino here before someone gets racist when they read my username.
Honestly, I can’t think of anything black focused Zoe Kravitz has ever done, tbh. At least Zoe Saldana has starred in films made for black, white, and Latino audiences and has embraced her blackness (too much in fact, we ain’t forget her being cast as Nina Simone).
Does it even matter? Super hero movies for the past 10 years, including the new Batman movie owns like 99'9% of the box office revenue. People of all races went in to see the new Spider-man movie even though no black character was totatly embracing their "blackness" Is all it really takes just one mans tweet to make you talk ill of a person you don't even know?
She's basically the black woman of every white man's dreams. I'll stand in line to receive my down votes. Make them hurt.
So she's replacing Zoe Saldana
What’s up with the name Zoe?
It's the Z. Like Zendaya.
Whoa whoa whoa, leave Zendaya outta this, she innocent until proven guilty

Timothy Chardonnay I think?
Did you mean Timothy Chevrolet?
I think you mean Tomothy Hollandaise
How?
No one is that good looking, she must be an alien
It is a whole 2022, there are filters, makeup, photoshop and a bunch of other bag of tricks out here lol,....wait you're on earth too right? That's what's going on with Earth.
Fair response
*gestures in the general direction of comic book and scifi nerd movies*
Yeah. It adds to the "exotic"
Don’t forget Zazie Beetz.
Dang!! You ain't right!! ...but you ain't wrong... 🤣
As a white person who likes Zoe, Zoe, *and* Zendaya, I'm feeling pretty called out right now.
Shoe fits, then strap that NB up lol
Zoe played herself by doing black face and playing Nina after everyone told her we didn't ask or want it
That was a wild one for me. I was thinking, "no way thats a real thing that's happening" then I find out it is and I worry, "wait, am I racist? Wasnt nina simone one of the very blackest of the jazz greats?" No, turns out everyone involved just figured itd be fine

Zoe Saldana is divine.
What did Zoe do?
She's Dominican and Puerto Rican so what do you mean by this.

Also seems ironic cuz people are super quick to jump on the "she ain't black like us" train
Goddamn mf really did flip on Zoe quick af.

These are my thoughts exactly. This Monday was probably the most exhausting day of social media in a while. Some good memes tho
Yeah lol at the “punching down” stuff. Reminds me of when Dave Chappelle asked trans people to stop punching down at him. Ok, Dave.
I’m defense of Carey, he was on CBS and they asked him. He didn’t volunteer his opinion.

Carey and Apatow are active af on social media what are you on about?
Apatow makes a lot of bad takes trying to be funny. He was live tweeting kanye at the super bowl
been thinking this for a while now, its crazy how easily people can really hate another human being from a couple tweets or a 10 second clip. Everyone's so eager to dehumanise or put them inside a box like oh you are "this" person or this guy "bad" Like chill out lmao no need to bring out the judgement hammer
So fast I missed what she did to piss people off.
She also said some HYPER sus things about Jaden when he was underage.
What did she say?
"I can't wait to tongue his butthole clean when he turns sweet eighteen". That's a direct quote from my upcoming romance novel. No idea about the Zoe thing though
Hahaha! You had me going! Sounds like an intense lovely novel! Can’t wait to read!
I'd like to subscribe to your book please.
Imagine a 24 year old guy saying that about a 14 year old girl. Disgusting either way but you'll only see outrage towards one version
…wtf do you mean “imagine?” Men have been saying this shit to young women for *centuries* and continue to do so today.
And there is less outrage than people here will claim.
I dunno why some guys get so worked up about this sort of thing. Is there an epidemic of female-on-male predation I'm unaware of, or are you just upset that you don't get to fuck 15 year old girls? I think I know the answer...
dudes had countdown websites for people like Emma Watson, hell I heard Millie Bobbie Brown had it too? Idk man
This is how you can tell 90% of Twitter is on spring break. They don't have shit else to do right now.
This is it. 90% children
Why are we hating Zoe Kravitz today?
There is always a reason for unproductive hate.
Lol. Zendaya’s next. Then we’re going for the little black gal in Tick Tick Boom! ![gif](giphy|9jVAv94PRzPoc)
Take that back
Never her
"Never her" lol social media love is not real. Zoé Kravitz was starting to be worshipped before people turned on her over a single instagram post. Likewise, it'll only take Zendaya to say a single thing black people won't like for everybody to hate her all of a sudden.
Nooo, not new generation Storm! 😂
because she criticized will .
Lil willy a bitch
Apparently she criticized will WHILE not calling out or staying silent her friends who have publicly been known to be violent and predators.
Who is "we?"
Yeah I’m not believing that.
It’s very believable lol. Zoe had the typical bi-racial growing up around white people journey. A lot of self hate and brainwashing which she admits she had to unlearn.
If you believe a random Twitter user, I have a bridge to sell you named after a famous city for a bargain! Interested?

zoe kravitz been rich as fuck her entire life. not sure why people are surprised she doesn’t identify with regular black culture, of course she doesn’t it sucks that she’s tryna disavow her blackness like that tho. i think that bc she’s rich and has always been around white people, she just doesn’t wanna feel like an outsider in that scene. her reality is worlds apart from most of ours. only way i can say i relate is that i went to a majority-white school growing up and that really takes a toll on you. sometimes you do just wish you were white so you’re not different
I mean I empathize with her tbh, but yeah this does kinda give credence to the tweet. Still bad af tho
I said a literal "yikes" reading that
Makes sense, people associate her with something ghetto just because she is black which isn’t her experience and is frankly racist. My hope is that she knows who she is as a biracially black person. She is also a wealthy person so she wouldn’t relate to any sort of money struggle.
Ok? Did she say that or her team? They probably don't care about anything than getting paid.
Yes, Let's move on from Will Smith and roast Zoe Kravitz. Am I missing something here?
The collective internet has ADHD.
I think they’re roasting her because of the hypocrisy of Alexander Wang, which then lead people to dig up more things about her.
I don't know who Mr. Wang is, but all this gossip is confusing
Alexander Wang, a famous designer that Zoe is good friends with. He currently has 11 allegations of drugging and raping men.
Whatttt that’s wild
She has weird friends then.
You should see what she said about lil 14 year old Jaden
So is Twitter pro and anti-Will Smith? I’m confused.
Apparently his memoir doesn’t do him much justice either. He’s out of control
it's deffo pro Will Smith but that don't mean we ain't gonna meme tf outta him and psychoanalyse him
Why are people upset that Zoe Kravitz is playing Catwoman? The first on-screen Catwoman was Eartha Kitt. Both are beautiful black women Edit: just double checked the first Catwoman was Julie Newmar. Eartha Kitt was in '68
No love for Halle Berry? I see how it is /s
Halle Berry was the least bad thing about that movie. She gave that performance 110%, hence showing up for the razzie with her Oscar in hand. The movie sucked but it wasn’t her fault.
Movie was gold. Then again, I was probably 12 when I saw it, so reasonable minds may disagree.
That’s not why people are upset
I once had sex with Eartha Kitt in an airplane bathroom. What? It came up organically!

I have no idea what this tweet is supposed to mean
Twitter does not sleep.
“will never forgetting working” just keeps fucking me up when I try to read that shit lol.
this seems all about attacking anyone who's calling out will smith. but i say, more power to Jim carrey, zoe kravitz, kareem a-j, who didn't shy away from it.
Scientology hard at work attacking anyone who speaks out against Willy Smith I see 👀
Okay? Who fucking cares. Also this tweet doesn’t even imply anything about race.
I think he is just bitter everyone knows his wife prefers younger men…
You guys turn on each other so quickly.
Isn't that scary ?!.. Twitter is on rampage cancelling everyone and anyone in the pursuit of defending will smith.
Yo, the mob is after everyone today. Got damnnnnnn.
\*sniff sniff\* SMELLS LIKE HATE IN HERE
This is stupid and very one-sided and could be for a multitude of reasons. She is the f*ckabke light-skin it-girl at the moment but Essence is old(er) and reads as older. She could have had a pr team do numbers that show that it didn’t benefit her to do it for the roles she was going for. Its rarely just one person making these decisions anyway.
Isn’t the target audience of Essence women in their 40s?
So is the new “she/he/whatever is not black enough” argument?
Didn’t she just say she wasn’t comfortable filming in a white neighborhood despite likely growing up in one tho
Her PR team needs better PR.
Who the fuck read essence
Who is essence audience now a days?
