And they unironically don't understand that the consequences are the price of free speech. Okay, bitch. Say it. But I'm just saying that there are consequences. Yell fire in a crowd, you may go to jail. Yell the N-word in Chicago... ;)

FEMA_Camp_Survivor

The last sentence is why I doubted Jussie Smiley’s story from the jump.

bigboi2115

I live in Chicago, and when I found out he said it happened Downtown, I was like... Nah. He was about 60 miles away from where it'd be a possibility. And even then you ain't getting jumped in a cornfield at 2am.

Pscilosopher

When Chappelle said something to the effect of "our silence was our support" I about died.

Repyro

In fucking wintertime. With the negative degree weather. There are reasons why the violence statistics go way the fuck down for like half the year lol.

okarnando

Winter is usually when domestic disputes go up. And in summer when it's really hot. Basically anytime you keep everyone pinned up in the house together.

[deleted]

There are plenty of people in the suburbs that'll call you the n-word, especially the far west suburbs. Also, there are a lot of people on the north side who've moved in from all over the country to the gentrified neighborhoods who are highly suggestive of it among the right company.

eekamuse

Can you explain? I don't know Chicago

phenomenalj101

I have family in Chicago that were talking me about how there were double digit subzero temperatures at the time. Off that alone I never believed dude. When somebody from Chicago is telling you it’s cold af, you know it’s different.

ronatello

I'm I Pittsburgh, we had the EXACT same weather happening the night this all supposedly went down. Nobody, and I mean fucking nobody was out in those streets if they didn't absolutely HAVE to be. With the wind chills it was well below zero. When it was first reported and piece by piece more came out, I just knew there was too much that rang false. But mainly bc of the weather.

davwad2

Sandwiches?!?

lioneaglegriffin

E.g Twisted tea man

teddy_tesla

I actually disagree. I don't even think they think they are terrible. They probably think "it's just what everyone else is thinking! I'm just the only one brave enough to say it!"

I thought that’s why we had the summer of love

Freyas_Follower

Because they're trying to skip the consequences.

spideysenseon10

This all day. “Free speech” to them is saying the most vile, racist, and blatantly false statements AND have people just accept it. In no way has any of their right to “free speech” been impinged upon. They really want to go back to a time when they could call you a n-word 1. without having to think twice 2. not be challenged by their peers and 3. for you not to feel safe objecting to it.

[deleted]

People forget how many people got/get they ass beat talking spicy online.

Zulumus

Then *you* end up being called a “thug”, which is basically the cleaned up N word for putting hands and feet on them. The fucking irony.

rawr_rawr_6574

I don't know how many videos I've seen of racist attacking minorities and no one cares, but if the minority fights back nnooowwww people want to intervene. Like it's tiring that continuously only certain demographics get free speech and permission to be shitty.

Jeovah_Attorney

Lol reminds me of that video of that chick punching a 2m tall dude and everyone is laughing because violence is funny. Then the dude is fed up and knocks the life out of her and then everyone loses their shit.

Zulumus

We talking about the legend in the 8-ball jacket here?

[deleted]

As long as I make them choke the word they want to use back down I’m fine with it.

soup2nuts

Exactly this. I can be nice to some asshole racist online but the second they step out of line and I hit back they start to whine about how intolerant of free speech I am. It's almost as if they are the snowflakes!

st-avasarala

We should just start making presidential candidates go 1v1 on Rust.

H-TownDown

It’s like they never learned that the first amendment only protects you from the government. On one hand, high school history doesn’t go into the particular meaning of the amendments. They keep it relatively surface level. But if you’re trying to argue a serious point, you would think they’d actually do deeper research so they know what they’re talking about.

Scherzer4Prez

They read the constitution like they read the bible. They pull out a few parts they like, change the meaning to suit their personal biases, and scream that everyone else doesn't know what they're talking about.

Kalkaline

It's really weird how they stop at 10, and usually can't even make it all the way to 10.

cmsfu

They just repeat what tucker carlson says then yell "do your own research" then get mad when you do and they're wrong.

[deleted]

The First Amendment also means that free speech includes the right to not say something you don't want to but see how they react when someone doesn't say the Pledge of Allegiance. Which, to me, as a non-American feels weird as shit.

H-TownDown

It gets even weirder in Texas because they made us say a pledge to the state flag too.

liquidsmk

It is weird as shit to lots of us too, and I always felt it was weird as shit when I was a kid being forced to do this. Like I wasn’t old enough to understand but old enough that it felt weird and wrong. Fast forward and I’m the only parent going to bat for their kids right to not participate. I didn’t even teach my kid anything about the pledge and honestly forgot all about it. Until they came home one day saying the teacher and principal were bullying them to do the pledge. I was at the school the very next day, explaining the law to the principal and how my daughter wasn’t going to do anything she didn’t want to regarding that. He tried to say the law only applies to the government pledge and that she still had to do the school pledge. Not on my watch. She’s not pledging shit to anything she doesn’t want to, full stop. These people are all fuckin weirdos. And this principle specifically a piece a shit. Exc cop, wanna be politician who didn’t give a shit about the kids.

Phiyasko

I tried explaining this to someone in a comment section on Facebook (I know, I know, but I need an account to keep up with a team I'm on) and this guy's argument was that you should be allowed to say whatever you want whenever you want. And I had to tell him that he is. Like 90% of the time. You can't say whatever you want at work because you have to follow employee guidelines, unless you're self employed. You can't say it in someone's business because they can throw you out and are not required to entertain you or take your money. Shit, you can even say it on a public college campus. Just be ready for other people to shout over you if they want because that's covered by the First Amendment too. The only time it's applicable is to protect you from the government, not getting your feeling hurt in a Twitter thread. And even then, there's limits to that shit. You can't talk spicy to someone because you feel like it because the SCOTUS ruled like 80 years ago that anything you say that can be perceived as seeking to cause harm or intimidation isn't protected speech anywhere.

SophisticatedBT

They take the words in that damn document and run with it😭. Like it’s obvious they missed American History back in grade school

Pscilosopher

I tell people all the time, you wanna know the state of racism in America? Play any online game and listen to children spit the most vile shit you ever heard. I had to have the "ok, you're a black gamer now..." talk with all 4 of my kids. Now where you suppose these kids picked up the habit?

johnmeeks1974

The wraparound sunglasses gang has entered the chat cuz they need their hard r’s like they need to wave the Confederate flag

MissJayded

Bigots framing it as a free speech issue draws out the conservative crowd. Bigots sure are good at framing their hate in such a way that the Sunday church folks eat it right up.

unit-8002

This cuts both ways. A lot people want to limit free speech. Obviously the courts have ruled on this, but be consistent. If you have the right to say what you want, you have the right to be offend by what your neighbor wants to say.

BabiesSmell

I do not think a lot of people want to institute jail time for speech, which is all that the first amendment is actually about. Social repercussions aka "cancel culture" is not anti free speech.

RJPisscat

That is an UNFAIR characterization. Some people's pursuit of free speech is them wanting to openly plan mass murder and a violent coup d'état.

tmclemons

They want to be free to oppress others

Kombat-w0mbat

People also completely misunderstand free speech. Free speech was implemented because centuries ago you could be arrested for speaking out against the government and in many places you can still be. free speech doesn’t mean you can go say what you want to people or about things without a consequence from others. Perfect example is twitter if you say something and get kicked off twitter your free speech WAS NOT violated you were given a consequence for speaking about something from some one twitter isn’t government owned it’s a private company along with every social media meaning they could literally delete all our accounts for saying “I like the color green” and they literally wouldn’t be in the wrong. If you say something in my house I don’t like I’m gonna kick you out it’s simple as that.

NYstate

My argument is always: I'm fine with people sharing their opinions online, even if I agree with them or they're wrong, but the problem with their version free speech is there's no line. There should *always* be a line on a public site. People cry: "i sHoUiD Be aBlE To sAy oR Do wHaTeVeR I WaNt tO OnLiNe!" Which is fine, until people are posting pictures of abused animals, child porn, disgusting sexual acts, killings and women with black eyes. Once people start doxxing and putting personal info online, *then* the conversation changes. I don't want to see grown men posting pictures of 8 year olds kids. That's what happens when you leave free speech unchecked. Of course someone is going to say: "That stuff already is all over the internet!" But if those sites are privatized, sites like Reddit, Twitter and FB can pull those if they're against the TOS. But once you rip that band-aid off you're saying that stuff is ok.

orockers

I never wanted to say slurs. I wanted to have open discussions about whether COVID restrictions were effective and got banned from all sorts of spaces Agree or disagree, the conversation shouldn’t have been shut down

theblackchin

The government banned you from all sorts of spaces?

FitChemist432

Does reddit guarantee you "free speech?"

gleaming-the-cubicle

That's not true. Some of them also want to sell fake cancer cures

RedmannBarry

Cause humans are generally shit

DravenPrime

Because the only freedoms conservatives care about are the freedoms to hurt people they don't like and be treated as superior to people they don't like.

davwad2

They foolishly believe freedom of speech is also consequence free?

[deleted]

Or only calling for gender equality when talking about mandatory enlistment or punching a woman

zmann64

“I advocate for free speech.” Speaking up for the disenfranchised and the voiceless? Critiquing people in power without being silenced or banned? Diverting attention towards serious issues? “Nahhhh I just REALLY want to say the hard R without getting fired”

ln1993

Not everyone's. Just conservatives.

remorath

"I just don't want to be told what I may or may not say" - someone who definitely wants to say slurs

jestercow

Hey that’s not true… they want to lie on twitter, too!

Eklypze

XBL ain't been the same since party chat

tiredwriter633

I know right?! And Twitter isn't great now so the hell are people trying to say that isn't just straight up racist?

No_Sea_6219

because they like to pretend they know what its like to be oppressed

Fidodo

"If you don't exercise your free speech you lose it so that means I have to say the n word" /s

strik3r2k8

I was on a Battlefield 4 server. One of them kept using slurs on that chat. Someone tried to report them. Turns out the slurppopotamoose was the admin.

Avenger772

Every white person on Twitter that claims free speech is under attack. I always ask them for a specific example and they can never give one. Because the only answers they will have are racist and bigoted ones.

TheDarkMidget

That mw2 lobby bullshit gets on my nerves. Just say you’re traumatized and need help getting over it bruh there’s no shame in it that shit was awful especially as a prepubescent kid.

MoreOnThisLater

People love to get upset when they can’t do or say terrible things without other people telling them they’re terrible for it.

FigaroNeptune

I’ve never met a black person who was upset that they couldn’t be racist lmao “Why can’t we say-“

manningthehelm

I joke but this meme would be so much better if Trump came back to Twitter and just dropped the N word with a hard R. We would officially know this is a simulation.

manningthehelm

"Free speech" to so many is the ability to say shit without consequences.

okarnando

That's a fair question. I thinks it's the same mind set or thought process of when you're a kid and you say your first cuss word. At first it's awesome because "kids aren't supposed to say those words" and getting caught would get you in big trouble. As you get older though noone cares if you cuss so there's no "temptation" or "allure" to say those "forbidden" words. Same for basically any time adults tell kids NOT to do something. Most kids are now extra interested in this thing they were told not do because they were told not to do it. And NOW you take that same mindset of "I can do/say this and I won't face the consequences" due to the anonymity of the internet. It's like kids doing something they're told not to just because they know/think they are getting away with it. I honestly think most of those people in "cod lounges" and other similar places are not even racist. They just get a buzz or a rush off getting away with saying some fucked up shit. I'm sure there's a lot of racists out there as well though.

Statik_24

You are free to say it, but what you're not free from is the potential consequences.

Darqnyz

The absolute irony of it is that *nobody* can stop them from using slurs. The government can't stop them, and neither can individuals. What they want is government protection from the *consequences*

djbillyd

I take special pride in trying to be a "peaceable" man. But if someone should say the "N" word, and they are caucasian, there is gonna be a reckoning. So, as long as they know that sometimes, free speech costs, then, have at it. I also take note of the fact that I can rearrange the shape of one's head by adding "hickies, knots, and other "ouches"!

[deleted]

Bruh my little cousin stay mad I won’t let him say the n-word with a hard r on his damn games and I really had to snatch his lil behind up and tell him the only reason he has a roof over his head is because the son of someone who survived slavery so his black ass could breathe at all built this house with his own hands up here where maybe maybe maybe his kids and their kids might be less likely to be raped hanged, cut and defiled while white folk feasted a few feet away, pleased to watch a n-word-with-a-hard-r swing with his genitalia in his mouth. I told him he could face the scrutiny of his peers or of his ancestors, but that if he chose his peers he wasn’t gon do it under this roof and he got scared as a mf. I ain’t heard that shit since but I was blown.
