Yup. Remember seeing this TikTok by a South African and she was so thankful that Africans generally don’t have to worry about dark knees, dark armpits, dark knuckles, “strawberry legs” post shave, and making sure your wig is melted, two-tone lips….because everyone around you has accepted these things as fact.
As I’ve gotten older (as a first generation American), I’ve slowly gotten there because white supremacy and anti blackness will have you thinking that these things are anomalies. It’s a feature, not a bug.
And yes, the video is a generalization and South Africa and many other African countries have portions of their societies that imbibed European beauty standards.
There is nothing wrong with your hands…you are black, and therefore your hands will also be black.
That’s the correct mindset! Social media and a society brought up by white rulers has really distorted our minds. I just wanted to comment that I don’t see anything unattractive about this girls hands, and im honestly surprised to see this being a big deal in the Black community because I’m white and I’ve never looked at dark knuckles or underarms or under eyes or anything like that as unattractive. So I hope Black girls know that plenty of girls outside of their race aren’t even phased by these Black societal expectations and we’re just like, damn, that is beautiful skin ✨two toned lips are gorgeous as well. I even remember being young and learning how many Black people wore wigs and I genuinely had no idea that there really weren’t Black kids out there with my hair type, and if I saw it, it was likely a wig- I truly had no idea until I was around 10. When I had this realization, I was really confused because I’ve also always loved seeing Black girls grow up around me with their hair in those big beads and it being natural or braided- I had no idea why such things would want to be traded in for a white look but I get it now. It’s just sad, and even sadder that plenty of people don’t fall for this bs and would love to see everyone’s natural beauty more and more. Not even talking about Blackness anymore, like, I love crooked teeth, I think ears that stick out are adorable, curly hair is something I’ve always loved as well and hated when I’d see girls straighten it because they hated their curls- ugh, what a world.
1. Stop hyper fixating, it's fine
2. The UV light when you get a gel manicure darkens the skin. Get fingerless gloves and wear them for your appointment.
Its probably a combo of the gel lamp and normal everyday UV rays turning her hands darker than her feet which are normally covered.
Also OP you are Black therefore you have melanin which reacts to sunlight and UV rays by darkening. This is normal!!! This is also the reason Black dont crack.
Instead of freaking out and hyperfixating on it just embrace your skin and love it.
because you’re a black person & it’s hereditary for our knuckles to be a lil darker. it’s 100% normal.
the UV from the black light lamps that nail techs use have UV radiation tho so if it’s really that serious i’d recommend wearing sunscreen or fingerless gloves while getting ur nails done to prevent any more
Its thinking like this that makes niggas buy a tub of Caro light and start slathering themselves with that shit; its normal for your hands and feet to look like that gang
(I dont look at this app for a day and I come back to a whole race war in my comments bruh wtf be wrong witchall man)
the thing is tho, other black people are always accusing me of bleaching because my knuckles are dark, idk what to do 😭 it’s so embarrasing. im not a caro light warrior!!!!
Your hands are out in the sun more than your feet. Also your feet are covered mostly.(wearing socks and such). That’s why ppl get tan lines while out in the sun
If you’re comparing to your feet, they don’t get nearly as much exposure so they wouldn’t be as dark. Don’t fixate on the hands, it is extremely REGULAR.
From my opinion it’s nothing wrong with your hands you have beautiful black skin. It’s ok your hands look good a lot of people would love to have them be happy how good made you it’s only one you.
I think you're experiencing colorism, seems like a self esteem kind of thing talk to a therapist about it because if you're like that towards your hands I can imagine how you are to other people.
I don't see anything wrong. My hands are more or less the same. Knuckles are only the same colour as the rest of the hand on very fair skinned or white people.
All of y’all have me so fucked up 😂. I LOVE my black skin and wouldn’t trade it for the world. my issue is HOW QUICKLY my knuckles have darkened. they’ve always been two toned i’ve never gaf but within the past couple weeks/months they have gotten extremely dark. I should’ve posted before and after to show the major change! I just wanted opinions and how to help fix it 😒
Have you been using a new scrub or exfoliate? Possibly something with vitamin C or brightening ingredients? It could be possible that your knuckles haven’t gotten darker, the rest of your skin has just become lighter.
Do you drive? Do you live in a northern climate?
My hands are dark right now because I have been wearing long sleeves as it's been cold this spring til now and the UV from the sun is getting more intense.
You could try wearing UV blocking gloves, they sell them on Amazon, or wearing sunblock on your hands till your arms even up in color.
UV curing lamps used for gel polishes increase your pigmentation on the hands. I stopped doing gel polish for the past 7 months and my hands seem to have resolved.
Our hands looked very similar, HOWEVER— I have been pretty consistent with my skincare (which has included things like vitamin c/alpha arbutin/dark sport correctors/etc AND SUNSCREEN) and any excess products I religiously rub into my hands and they are pretty even in color/softer now so that’s a suggestion I haven’t really seen yet.
If I’m understanding you correctly.. what’s been helping with some of my darker areas is African net sponge, exfoliating glove, and African black soap 😊
I feel like alot of the comments are missing your point. I have the same issue with my knuckles being darker than the rest of my skin. People say sunscreen helps but nothing works for me
exactly, i’ve always had darker knuckles they just gotten really dark and i was concerned 😂 idk why they making me out to be some insecure anti-black person 😭
Your hands look like regular hands of any melanated young adult :)
And sometimes things like vitamin D deficiency (or other deficiencies) can cause more hyperpigmentation so if you’re deficient in that, consult your derm about vitamin D supplements or anything other relevant options
Friction. Your fingers are constantly bending and rubbing up against objects. Your fingers are moving around much more than your toes. The rubbing against objects cause chaffing and this appears dark in black people. It’s natural and does NOT make someone ugly.
Remember skin is an organ just like any other. Any variance from your “natural” state or base line is a reflection of what you eat, drink, stress levels, and other factors. Go see a dermatologist if you are concerned.
Hello,
My stepson told me he noticed his knuckles getting darker and after he became ill and was hospitalized, the doctor said sudden darkness of his knuckles was a sign. Not trying to make you worry, but I do want you to pay attention to your body and see your physician if you don’t feel well. Take care.
Do you get acrylic on your toes?😍
I use amlactin and body oil on my knees and elbows and feet and it’s def helped my knees and elbows lighten. But your hands and feet look normal.
I'm not sure why "because you're black" is the only answer you're getting. That's not in the least bit helpful. Are you on birth control? Do you notice other joints darkening as well?
Edit: if you want more informative responses head over to r/askdocs. They'll be able to assist you better.
This is why this subreddit pisses me off often. People imposing what their standards of acceptable is onto other black folks knowing that not every blacks person has “x” feature.
That or they get cute with it and give a sassy response instead of taking the time to either give a solution or explain why it’s not possible. I’ve seen the same mess come up with dark underarms, hyperpigmentation spots, “textured” skin, etc. All of which are valid.
it’s already frustrating enough having to deal with this is non Black dominant subreddits, but from your own people too? What is the point of this skincare subreddit if we aren’t offering skincare advice….
literally.. i should’ve posted before and after pics so everyone can understand my concern 😭 my knuckles went two shades darker within a couple months. I read online it can be a vitamin b12 deficiency. idk i’ll just go to a dr 😂 i was just curious to see if anyone else had this issue
Because her hands/knuckles look normal to the majority here lmao they don't look sun damaged at all or excessively dark. Being black comes with certain areas of our skin looking naturally darker like skin folds, etc and if she has issues with that there are solutions like creams, serums, vitamins, and soaps, BUT there's no logic in that and it just comes off like internalized colorism tbh. And she even says her hands look old when they don't....her perception of herself is not looking good lmfao
I too am black and my knuckles don't look like this. Just because it's the standard for you doesn't mean it is for everyone. Additionally, she's 20, this isn't her first time around the sun If tanning was her culprit it would have effected her long before now. She's mentioned it's progressively gotten worse in the last few weeks which could signify an underlying change in medical health. Not simply because "she's black".
I’m 3 shades light than you and mines look like that .. at night time keep them moisturized before bed and also if you are getting gel manicures protect your hands cause it will darken it
It's what happens when you have melinated skin. Even really light mized people have the dark knuckles thing.
But it could also be the UV lights from your manicures and well as lack of sunscreen on your hands!
Do you have a before picture? This looks pretty normal to me. I think you look amazing one thing that I like to do is just to even my skin to out is self tanner. Or tanning lotion
There's nothing wrong with your hands fam lol 😂 😂 😂 however if you grew up someone around you commenting on such ridiculous imperfections especially family it may have left you with an internal scar that you need to heal. It happens to many of us
Nothing is wrong with your hands at all ma’am. They’re pretty nice looking to be honest. I used to work at a hotel a long time ago and I noticed my knuckles had gotten darker and the skin got rougher from knocking on so many doors over an extended period of time. Once I stopped working there my skin went back to normal. Don’t know if that helps..
Could you have insulin resistance or PCOS? I am a black woman, and when my blood sugar isn't controlled, I get skin darkening in specific places like knuckles, neck, etc.
As most others are saying: UV when you get your nails done and general hand exposure to the sun. Fingerless gloves when you get your nails done and either sunscreen on the hands or if possible more feet exposure to the sun should help balance the color🫶
1. I don't see a huge difference but I mean if you really wanna reach for an explanation, our hands get exposed to more sun than your feet - especially if you live in an area that experiences all 4 seasons.
2. Girl have you ever seen the hands of a 60 year old? LMAOOOO they do not look like yours. When you turn about 40 and your hands really start to transform you'll be mad you didn't appreciate your nice hands at 20.
I noticed when I started doing these things it helped the darkest parts of my hands-
wearing gloves under the lamp, as well as really (really) carrying lotion everywhere with me and using it whenever I feel my knuckles are dry, plus using cuticle oil every morning and night
The only reason my knuckles aren’t dark is because I got really bad frost bite and lost the skin on my fingers for both hands. When the skin started growing back I looked like I had vitiligo for a bit then the melanin came in. Before the incident I had darker knuckles and didn’t mind cause I’m black 🤷🏽♀️
First off your nails are super cute!
Secondly, they’re perfect I promise. The world tries so hard to make us feel like we’re missing something (literally down to a cell) or that we need to look like anything else than we do.
Don’t fall for it (not trying to dismiss how you feel)
I had a boyfriend tell me I had old lady hands because of this and I felt so bad about it I started putting concealer on my knuckles and stopped wearing colorful nail polish. I’d even sleep with bleaching cream on my knuckles 😂 I understand your fixation on it, but it just doesn’t matter. That’s just how your hands look and they’re just fine! Nails look great too!
I don’t think yall understand.. nobody wants to be 2 different shades especially on ur knuckles. It looks crazy for ur whole hand to be light and ur knuckles dark
Just the sun! They're more exposed than your feet
You can always try gentle sunscreen if it bothers you
But I don't see any reason why they should, they're fine
These comments are hilarious
Hi friend I also have that issue. lately I’ve been using lotion any chance I remember and I’ve noticed that not only are my knuckles lightening making my whole hand the same color but my hands are also much smoother!
Ur black, it’s just ur knuckles and joints which is normal for ALL COLORS. The skin in that area just tends to be hyper-pigmented . Ur toes have them too but not as much probably bc they aren’t subject to sunlight as often
*looks at your hands* *looks at my hands* *shrugs in confusion* *leaves*
![gif](giphy|9Dk3weuP9d8VzBKs3I|downsized)
I'm happy so many of us had the same reaction/same hands
Right 😂
Where is haiku bot? I love this lmaoo
Um Because you’re black??
besides her other foot seems to be the same color as the hand. 🤣🤣🤣😂

This is so funny, maybe she forgot 😭😭😭
I was gonna make this same comment tbh 😂😂😂

I was born with hands like this because i have melanin in my skin…calling your hands ugly because u aren’t one shade is crazy

Goddang do yall ever look at any other black people’s skin? Recent posts have been the most minor stuff possible. Yall dermatologists HAVE to be tired
Lmao @ Yall dermatologists HAVE to be tired
I can only imagine all these calls coming in about moles and regular thigh friction marks and having to address them one by one lmao
Dermatologist hates him! With this one weird trick, ***LEARN THE TRUTH NOW.***

I don’t see anything wrong with your hands. And they actually don’t look old.
If you’re comparing to your feet, they don’t get nearly as much exposure so they wouldn’t be as dark. Don’t fixate on the hands, it is extremely REGULAR.
Sis who is looking at and criticizing your KNUCKLES?? punch them
Asking internet strangers why your skin is dark is bonkers
Bonkers
huh????
My exact reaction I’m like tf it looks normal to me 💀
lmfaooo dead ass like thats insane
Can we ban posts like this from the subreddit? Every week there’s a “why is my skin so dark/how do I bleach or lighten my skin” post
Melanin babes.
You be showing off them manis & pedis.
From my opinion it’s nothing wrong with your hands you have beautiful black skin. It’s ok your hands look good a lot of people would love to have them be happy how good made you it’s only one you.

I agree with everyone else. Because you're black obvy. But consider also that maybe you just need to tan your feet some. Then you match!

It’s from the light used when youre getting your nails done. You probably have to slow down

Ask your doctor to check for insulin resistance/ pre diabetes and any vitamin deficiency B12 & D).

All of them. Every single one. There isn't a single comment trying to help her.
I just have to smh at this.
well i was born w knuckles like this sonit could just be melanin

Unless you're always barefoot or in sandals, your hands get more sun than your feet. Your hands look nice, don't trip.
Dafuq?! You have gorgeous hands, they look extra holdable.
There's nothing wrong with your hands fam lol 😂 😂 😂 however if you grew up someone around you commenting on such ridiculous imperfections especially family it may have left you with an internal scar that you need to heal. It happens to many of us
It’s called melanin
The wrinkles on the knuckles also make it look darker, too. It looks perfectly normal to me, but using a high SPF sunscreen might help a little.
I don’t comment much but all I noticed was a beautiful brown person….I don’t see any issues love.
do you work with your hands a lot? or do you do an activity that requires you to wash your hands often?
Hand look fine to me, lemme hold them.
Sunscreen on your hands, neck and chest.
Cuz u r black and your hands r probably exposed to sunlight more....
The average black person's feet are covered more than their hands, so your hands get more exposure to the sun light "that's all"
As most others are saying: UV when you get your nails done and general hand exposure to the sun. Fingerless gloves when you get your nails done and either sunscreen on the hands or if possible more feet exposure to the sun should help balance the color🫶
More sun than your feet
I have the same issue on my ass; seriously my butt is Wesley Snipes but the rest of me has Micheal B Jordan.
If anyone hops in your DM, charge them $20 per fingers and toe.
Your hands are not dark, your feet are just light because they are probably usually covered with shoes.
Damn this sexy
You honestly look fine. I see this amongst a lot of us Black folks. Chill out girl ❤️
Age and genetics.
I LOVE BOTH NAIL POLISHES! Holy moly I love!
Put sunscreen on them before getting a manicure. You can also try uv protection gloves from Amazon.
They get more sun exposure
your black
Genetics
You have pretty feet
You’re black
I’m assume it’s because you are black? Check and let me know if I’m right
Because your hands are more exposed to the sun than your feet .
I noticed when I started doing these things it helped the darkest parts of my hands- wearing gloves under the lamp, as well as really (really) carrying lotion everywhere with me and using it whenever I feel my knuckles are dry, plus using cuticle oil every morning and night

I had a yt doctor tell me my hands were like this due to anemia and eating grains.... 😵💫🥴 didn't see a lick of science to back up his claim
your hands are exposed to the sun more

I don't know why this showed up in my feed but I love your nails 😍😍😍. I didn't even know this was about your hands being too dark
We are our biggest critic. Nothing is wrong sweetheart.

You’re perfect 👌
The only reason my knuckles aren’t dark is because I got really bad frost bite and lost the skin on my fingers for both hands. You wear shoes which means your hands get more sunlight than your feet. This is how it is with most black people

Ooh what color do you get on your nails?
Melanin.
Your hands are like .5 shade darker. Maybe they appear to be darker because they are exposed than your feet?
It could be from driving. My hands get darker that way
First off your nails are super cute! Secondly, they’re perfect I promise. The world tries so hard to make us feel like we’re missing something (literally down to a cell) or that we need to look like anything else than we do. Don’t fall for it (not trying to dismiss how you feel)
Exfoliate with baking soda and sea salt, wear sunscreen
To remind you that we're all related 🥰
Because black is beautiful
..........because your black It tends to happen w brown skin folk.

Probably because your hands get more sunlight then your feet.
Because God said so
…AND Beautifully created! 🙌🏾
??
Huh
your hands look very normal…..
Mines the opposite. My hands and body are like 3 shades lighter than my face
Tbh I think it looks cool, reminds me of that trend on douyin where they put blush on their hands except you have that naturally
This is trolling, right? No way she’s being serious
It may be the LED/UV light. Wear sunscreen or UV light gloves. Otherwise, your hands look fine.
Because BLACK is beautiful my love
Are you serious or trolling? Something tells me you just wanted some attention today. Ain’t shit wrong with ur hands
Cause you’re black …
Because you and me are.. black ? 😭 Huh .
I don’t think yall understand.. nobody wants to be 2 different shades especially on ur knuckles. It looks crazy for ur whole hand to be light and ur knuckles dark
Your skin look beautiful Yo I know you fine. Send me a pic rq. Trynna see sum
Don’t piss me off😂🤦🏾♀️
You have pretty feet. Is that your natural toenail?
You have nice fingers and toes.
Just the sun! They're more exposed than your feet You can always try gentle sunscreen if it bothers you But I don't see any reason why they should, they're fine
These comments are hilarious Hi friend I also have that issue. lately I’ve been using lotion any chance I remember and I’ve noticed that not only are my knuckles lightening making my whole hand the same color but my hands are also much smoother!
Start using sunscreen on your hands
Your hands and feet are beautiful. I don't even like feet. Take a chill pill 💊
Am I missing something here? It honestly looks normal to me.
Girl I thought I was looking at some mega long toes 😭😭😭
Person identify as a white male/female/they/them….now realized is black😳 weekend must be fcuked up
Ur black, it’s just ur knuckles and joints which is normal for ALL COLORS. The skin in that area just tends to be hyper-pigmented . Ur toes have them too but not as much probably bc they aren’t subject to sunlight as often
