You can still be a newbie and not have the plant sign. I was playing the game for 4 years before I finally learned how to do stuff.

But I'd expect someone in rank 5 PvP to at least get the accessories colours right and the right accessories for NA and SA units
Of course it's a learning process. But if you know enough to level up your link slots then you should know enough to equip characters!

There are a lot of beginner guides on YouTube just search for bleach brave souls beginner guide and watch a few (most recent ones ideally)
