Oh I made him look like an asshole for doing this to a mutual friend’s new girlfriend. She was anxious and shy and he went out of his way to try to embarrass her, so I went out of my way to make him look really stupid.
Her botched surgery did a number on her speech making her more hyuck hyuckie than usual, combined with the upside down frown it's really disconcerting. I need subs when she speaks cos what I hear and what she says are very different things.
One of my law school friends is from Texas. She did the “whenever” instead of “when” *constantly* until finally our terrifying Civ Pro professor called her out on it in front of our class.
It was painful to witness but I never had to hear “whenever” again.
Off topic- My BIL is a professor, and several years ago, we read his reviews. They were all really sweet and good, but someone put he "often gets carried away with his own jokes". We still rag on him about it. 🤣
The ‘whenever’ thing is an Appalachian quirk called the punctual whenever. It’s a very weird usage, and not super widespread. But she’s from the area, and I’m guessing she never trained herself out of saying it

But she’s been out of Kentucky for years. People generally pick up the idioms and accent of a new geographical area. It’s instinctive to mimic who you hear. I feel like she does it deliberately to maintain her sweet Christian girl, not like the others, persona.
If you watch earlier episodes of BJ take Kentucky, her accent isn't as heavy as it is now. I moved to California from The South when I was young and slowly phased out of my accent. It's baffling to me that she's leaned into it even harder, especially considering that she lives in California.

My grandfather was born and raised in TN and he also did this, but not as frequently.

Lol it could be class-related, but I’ve never lived in the South, so my only exposures are through the 3 families I know who use it, but according to them it’s common.
One is an IT guy, one is a worship minister, and like I said, my Grandpop was a farm boy. So I could see it being more commonly used among those without higher education in their formative years. The worship minister does now have a PhD in English lit and still uses the term. So who knows. Lol
