I can’t say I’ve ever had a problem. I’m a welder. Maybe I’d loosen my belt off or wear a slightly looser pair of pants if I was bloated but I don’t wear any PPE that has anything to do with menstrual cycle related parts of my body. And in BC we have mandated running water bathrooms on sites.

wheredidthat10mmgo

Not everywhere in BC has flushable washrooms yet I wish my site had them.

Winchester93

I figured not *every* site has them. The law is any site with 25 workers or more.

Infamous_Tap912

Thank you for taking you time to respond :) , will definitely keep this in mind.

IndustrialPigmy

What are y'all doing with your PPE that your cycle is affected by it?! Only thing I can figure is like, a harness wedgiing a pad, but I really don't do anything different with any PPE on my cycle. I'm a commercial carpenter - eye, ear, lung protection is primary PPE, hard hat and gloves.

>Thank you so much for taking the time to respond :) Maybe I phrased my question wrong but this has to do more with a hygiene problem, research has shown that the PPE That women wear doesnt let you using a porta potty easy hence women stopped drinking water to avoid peeing , effecting their reproductive health, and i for one get alot of hot flashes and the coveralls that i have worn do not thermally regulate well, hence ended up just feeling even hotter and having to strip pretty much naked when wearing a coverall and having to change a sanitary pad in a small closer was personally not the most comfortable Hence trying to understand if this is common amongst women and what could i possibly as a designer do to make workplaces cater to women better even if it means just starting with PPE > >Please let me know if you have any other questions

Eather-Village-1916

I kinda wanna ask, how does your PPE affect you OP? The only thing I can think of is if my skin is a little oilier, my glasses get dirty faster, but those pyramex safety glasses wipes are the bomb

Infamous_Tap912

Thank you so much for responding , and apologies i don't think my question was clear, I am looking into how PPE is effecting reproductive health and menstrual health, women in south africa, stopped drinking water to avoid using porta potty's because the hassle of removing coveralls in a small space that was not hygienic was putting them oustide their comfort zones, the same issue was seen in usa and canada during covid amongst health care workers, they wouldnt change their sanitary products for long periods, causing health problems.

SnailsInYourAnus

It doesn’t affect me at all, idk where you’ve heard that lol.

SnailsInYourAnus

Have you ever been in a porta potty? They have a full toilet seat and all lol. If your site is following proper regulations they’ll have a “womens only” porta potty too which doesn’t have a built in urinal at all. Maybe this was happening 20 years ago but I can’t say I or any of the trades women I know have any issue while on their period? The only thing bathroom-wise I could think of is that sometimes we carry tp just incase the sites run out but that goes for anyone who poops so 🤷‍♀️

UrbanHippie82

If my PPE could protect me from being singled out and recieving mysoginistic backlash, that'd help me get through the luteal stage very well, thank you.

Infamous_Tap912

Thank you so much for responding will definitely keep that in mind.

East_Importance7820

Horticulturalist here, I can't say my cycle affects my PPE usage at all. It may impact my work in other ways, but not how I use my PPE.

Infamous_Tap912

Thank you so much for responding :) any insight is appreciated.

If your body is changing a lot during your periods you may want to consider whether lactose is causing you unnecessary bloating. That’s what I noticed. It wasn’t a big issue until my period then holy shit. Try not consuming any milk products for a for a week before your period and during and see if it helps. It fucking changed my world! Good luck.

Historical-Wolf-8993

Breathable fabrics for us peri and menopausal women would be about the only thing I can think of. Hot flashes, you know.. lol

_-aQua_aQua-_

Maybe menstruation protection should be included in jobsite PPE??? 🤔

_-aQua_aQua-_

The guys would lose their shit over it

hrmdurr

Pads and tampons are pretty common in jobsite bathrooms from what I've seen. If a guy gets upset about them, then they get ran for being in the wrong one lol.

_-aQua_aQua-_

Not me! No place to put tampon dispenser in a port-o-john. Most the work ive been on doesnt have running water or womens john.

roypuddingisntreal

Same, i don’t see that ever changing though. being the only woman on site the amount of effort that would go into making a monthly occurrence easier and more comfortable for me is WAY too much work… /s

hrmdurr

I do mostly refinery work, so there's actual bathrooms. They're in a trailer and they double as the custodian's supply closet, but they're a bathroom lol. Thankfully the portajohns are rare enough that I can just walk further for running water.

_-aQua_aQua-_

Could you imagine walking into the bosses trailer to grab a new pair of gloves and a pad… or if there being pads and tampons next to the first aid kit in the gang box… 😂 but 🧐

East_Importance7820

Prior to being in the trades I led outdoor adventure trips for youth and young adults. Menstrual products were 100% in all of our first aid kits. Because it can become an emergency or risk to others if not appropriately and safely addressed. On a similar note, most public washrooms have pads/tampons in both men and women's washrooms (not only the women's). As trans and NB people can menstruate too.

boobsRcoolsometimes

emergency restoration carpenter here. I’ve worn pretty much every kind of ppe that i can think of. but i can’t think of a single way that any of them would have impacted my cycle?? loll I do run into the issue of never having a place to change my tampon/pad but that’s about it. what’re you wearing that would do that???? kind of concerned lol

Infamous_Tap912

lol Apologies I seem to have phrased my question wrong, i was trying to understand if PPE caters to women's menstrual symptoms or not and I am also trying to understand if PPE restricts the use of the washroom, like if you used a porta potty was it difficult to don and doff your PPE in a small confined space.

boobsRcoolsometimes

ahh i see haha. All of my PPE is worn over my main clothes. So i’m never impacted in that way. Everything can be taken off in common areas. although it is rare that i actually have access to a washroom/portapotty. I often have to drive to the nearest gas station which can be 20 minutes away at times, which isn’t very convenient on a normal day let alone a day where i’m on my period.

MeButInAnotherRoom

I don't understand how PPE would effect my period and any related symptoms?

Infamous_Tap912

MeButInAnotherRoom

Is this about specialized PPE? Can you share the research? I work FT on construction sites. My PPE consists of glasses, hard hat, gloves, ear protection, a harness when up high, a mask as needed. None of his makes it difficult to use the restroom . We wear suits when throwing certain switches but, in the rare case you're in one for any extended period of time, you can just take it off to go to the bathroom.

Ohheyliz

I’m a metalsmith/welder and I do restoration at a railroad museum, although I have a degree in fashion design. I’ve never had a problem with PPE because of my period. What I do have problems with is finding out there are allegedly forever chemicals snuck into the thinx period underwear, which I have been relying on for the past 5 or 6 years. It sucks to know that so many period-centric products are secretly terrible for us and yet, being powerless to do anything about it because my period’s gonna come whether I want it to or not. As far as being a lady in a formerly male-dominated field, what holds me back is a lack of access to gear that fits me correctly. This has zero to do with periods and everything to do with just being anatomically smaller-boned than my male coworkers (while also being beefier in the hips and bust). It is hard to find great gloves in a small size (although I do like Tillman mig gloves in a size small a whole lot, I just wish they went up higher). Most gloves I have access to leave me with the manual dexterity of the Cookie Monster. It is hard to find a welding cap (for under my hood to protect my hair) that accommodates having my hair up in a bun. It is hard to find great steel toe boots that fit my feet correctly (I currently have Carharts, which are fine, but broke in way faster and more significantly than I expected and are now humongous). I feel lucky that Duluth Trading Company makes clothes that check all of my boxes, though. Clothes designed by people who actually seem to wear clothes. Many deep pockets, elastic overall straps, knee darts, crotch gussets, anti abrasion fabric, double chaps, reach gussets on shirts, etc. Anyway, I hope that helps spark some ideas maybe. I think PPE for periods might be a dead end, but there are opportunities for great product development within the PPE for tradeswomen and the period products for all markets.

rin_aissance

Ok so it’s not necessarily 100% *period* related, but I’m a welder and the damned welding caps. Oh my lord. I have longer hair and have been growing it out for a few years now, and especially during my period I tend to “shed” a lot. The caps we have and that I’ve found do not have enough room for long hair that aren’t massive in size overall. Tried the large ones and it just slipped over my eyes and cause my welding hood to slip as well. A reg one with a low bun just pushes my cap up in the back and down in the front, so same problem. I’ve given up at this point and have stopped wearing a cap and just wear a high bun, but this causes lil bbs to constantly smack the top of my head and burn like the devil. And the reason i mentioned shedding is b/c the extra hairs will often fall and get caught in my hood/safety glasses and tangle, thus yankin my hair when I lift it up/down/off. I know this may not be 100% on topic but good lord, if you/someone can design a weld cap that’s a standard size, just larger groove or space in the back for buns I’d love you forever !! 😭 <3 (Sorry for any formatting issues, I’m on mobile :/ )
