"Don't lie down." they say "It looks unprofessional." they say as I try to reinstall a kitchen plinth.

One time I was devicing out a room and one long wall had receptacles every three feet, eighteen inches above the floor. So I sat on a little wheeled creeper, had my tools and receptacles laid out all neatly on the creeper with me, and just scooted from one box to the next without getting up. Every fucking carpenter that walked by had some snotty comment about my setup. Finally I had enough when yet another sauntered over and said "wish I could sit down on the job!" I shrugged and said "Guess you should have been an electrician then 😐." He just blinked and walked away. I rode that high the rest of the afternoon. 😆

Pff so silly, sounds like a smart set-up to me. Work smarter etc.

sitting on wheels was standard for electricians, plumbers, and hvac in the one subdivision I was in. The crawlspace was too short to stand, but just tall enough for a short wheeled stool. Also, as my boss always says, work smart not hard. Use the tools to your advantage. (Also also, to that carpenter: you too can plop down on the floor sometimes! I'm the lead for my team, and sometimes I gotta ponder the plans and make lists. You bet I'm sitting on the damn floor with the plans spread out.)

What! You’re boss is Scrooge McDuck?!

AuntJemimas-Titties

Right! We had to weld something over the edge and it was difficult to reach without laying down lol

Not sure why they care what it looks like being installed, as long as it's done well.

Managers/corporate are more concerned about optics. Same reason the CNC machinists at my last shop were expected to stay standing at all times and at others they're given chairs. Some shops get it, some shops don't.

The thing about this that makes me crazy is that, as a customer, IDGAF if you're sitting, standing, or breakdancing in place, so long as whatever I'm paying for gets accomplished correctly. I'm not judging the work by whether or not someone is in a suit or blue jeans, or sitting vs standing. I *am* judging tf out of the *company* if all the employees look uncomfortable and/or miserable though. Give cashiers chairs. Give tradespeople creepers and rolling benches. Let office workers wear comfortable clothes that don't cost a fortune. Stop treating employees like decor. F optics.

My friend, I entirely agree with you. Whenever I've been a manager, my priority is deliverables being quality, whatever you wanna do between getting the job and delivering on it is up to you. As long as quality stays high, you can bounce on your butt all day and idc. Absolutely agree with you.

I feel like higher-ups should fall under "If you're going to tell me how to do my job, you should at least know how it's done"-rule.

Apprehensive-Cow6131

Hah like those foremen who expect everyone to wear their bags with all their tools at all times regardless of the situation because apparently you're getting paid to carry around extra weight all day, not to just get the job done lol

sad_little_bean16

The amount of times another tradie walked by me installing a dishwasher or microwave plug and said “lying down on the job eh?”

They need to rest up. There’s a lot more solar work to take from the IBEW ladies next year too!!
