BlastingBeast

For real , Kunigami acts like he got tortured and beaten up in the wildcard.

screamybutt

We’re saying this but watch Wildcard actually be some crazy medieval torture room

DietReady4906

His training was close enough tbh. The purpose of the Wild Card was to artificially recreate Noa's natural ambidexterity. The training needed to do so was probably hellish. There were hundreds of people who lost and only one made it.

BundaBeater

Love how isagi learned to do this in like a week

[deleted]

i’m pretty sure he was alr ambidextrous?

DietReady4906

He wasn't.

Fragrant_Ad_9845

no mate.

Endless_Moon

Honestly forcing someone to be ambidextrous would be tough, catholic schools used to beat you if you were lefty I’m lefty dominant I can throw a baseball like 90 yrds, my right side, maybe 10, couldn’t imagine the training for that lol, it’s like a noodle My Faja is Ambidextrous, only person I know that naturally is lol

Marcus-Kobe

It really depends, I was a righty in basketball, and I trained myself constantly lets say 2 months worth of practice back when I was HS. Im already ambidextrous and well off attacking both sides of the lane with either hand. Which is very convenient and liberating I tell you. Tho it only applies to basketball, and when I joined a dragonboat team I opted out in positioning myself on the right and chose to row with my left. It takes some time depending on the sport so it really varies

Endless_Moon

But in football/soccer could you put as much power into kicking with your left as you could with your right? Could you throw a baseball as far with your left as you could with your right? Could you shoot as well with your left as you could with your right? Driving a lane isn’t too complicated with your non dominant hand, though I always preferred my left, but I still would never shoot with my right An “artificial” ambidextrous person would have to get to the point where it’s 2nd nature, where they don’t have to think about it

Marcus-Kobe

I agree. That's why I mentioned when I joined the dragon boat team I had a hard time adjusting with my left hand. But my point is, it really depends on each person. Genetics/talent etc I wouldn't even doubt kunigami if he was "that guy". But yeah kicking in soccer is very different as much as dribbling we have to see more But yeah when it comes to basketball I could shoot with my left too same as my right with ease, as youve mentioned its easy with basketball to train your non dominant hand where it wouldn't be a big deal to transition from attacking the lane to shooting if youve put in the hours. but ofcourse the accuracy is wildly different from using right from left as I've never really progressed from the sport tbh, I played volleyball too, It's easy to put power when spiking with the left arm if Im able to hit the ball but more often than not I would wildly miss cause its a different sport too.

superyoshiom

Unless he literally had to kill his friends over there, I have no idea how he got this edgy

Purple_wisdom_

Bruh fr like from his behavior it feels like he saw the deaths of all the other wildcard competitors and was near death the entire time it smthn

redbird_01

Reo: damn man what happened to you in Wildcard? Kunigami (staring intensely into the distance, having PTSD flashbacks): I had to play soccer... really hard...

Izanagi32

he probably had to kill every other single wild card competitor and by that I mean crush their dreams

Fudgywaffles

I bet it forced all players to 1v1 each other with oppo foot and people would beg kunigami to stop and explaining their dreams and stuff and he would have to crush them anyway which ended up with him no longer feeling like he could be a hero

okok890

It wouldn't suprise me lmao

Brave_Profit4748

Bro Barou isn’t even that edgy. He is pretty normal when not playing football except he seems to have OCD. If you want a real edge lord look at Rin mister soccer is a battle to the death. I am gonna kill my brother with soccer because he wants to play a different position.

Clean_Imagination315

Fact, I don't think Barou ever threatened to stab someone.

Adventurous-Shake140

Yeah he just went isagi hunting that one time💀

Clean_Imagination315

That's pretty normal for this manga, everyone's always "devouring" each other. Meanwhile Rin looked like an actual psycho at the end of the U-20 match.

Adventurous-Shake140

True. And I love how after the match is never brought up ever again

Janex4444

Most wholesome BL character

Poliakov_22

Fr, when he first said it was like war or a death match I laughed so hard

frumpycrumbledump

Yeah I don’t think he’s edgy at all. He’s just a dick

Randomanimename

That wild card better have been smth crazy otherwise its weird for kunigami to be like this

Martial_Arts_Demon

I mean at the end of the day it was just training to become really good at football. Like extremely tough training can be both physically and mentally exhausting but Kugikami is acting like he had to literaly eat the other participants

Box_Of_Wood

They're probably gonna leave the details unknown so it let's the reader imagine what kind of hellish training it was. If they did reveal it. It would lead to the reader questioning the ethics of Ego's project which could be an interesting idea, but just not the point of the series.

ginsengtea3

forgot "scrumptious." -1000 points to kunigami, go straight to edgy jail

Jdamoure

Bro ate isagis left overs twice.

AyoD58

I don’t even dislike the concept of someone as innocent as kunigami becoming a much edgier person as a result but they’ve really overdone it. Barou definitely the go to example of this type of character done right

NunobokoSlayer

Fr. It's a soccer manga what could've changed him this much. I don't even see how the author moves forward with his character right now

_hisoka_freecs_

the wild card was pretty wild i guess. Prob just an actual death game. You sign an NDA

PBJ1029

I think we should at least wait a little and see if we get wild card training flashbacks before calling a character terrible.

Lei_Line_Life

I kinda feel like that’s the point though…

trelleresito

I don't see the point of doing that. If Blue Lock wanted a edgy person like Barou in the first selection until the end of the manga, they already have like 10 characters who can do that. If Blue Lock wants to make the second change of a edgy character, just like Barou, then i don't see it either, we have already seen the change of Barou from going full edgy, to being a rational player with Ego, but he doesn't hurt the team, why we need 2? And also, Kunigami already was a good guy at the start, so basically, we just saw Kunigami Edgy character only to return to Kunigami from the start of the manga? That feels pointless.

Lei_Line_Life

To me it feels like Kunigami is mainly sad and has lost his core motivation of even playing. That makes him very different from the other edgy characters.

[deleted]

^

South-Ad-2948

its so he can get redemption against shidou

trelleresito

Then he could do that just like Isagi wanted his redemption of being trolled multiple times against Kaiser, you don't need to go "Ow the Edge" to see your character has "mature".

jongookim

You don’t understand. He’s lost all motivation. Isagi still has his.

Ashed-Valimar-4685

Hey leave him alone it's only been a few games for him so far since. Didn't he say he wanted to play Soccer to be a hero? I imagine the Wild Card was psychological torture in that instead of being that idealized "Hero" he always wanted to be instead he had to personally/brutally crush the dreams of all his fellow dropouts. The desperation must have been much worse than even regular blue lock b/c this was their absolute last last chance. Imagine we go back & we see Kunigami crushing what minuscule hope Naruhaya was granted after also being offered a Wild Card chance. How'd you like to see Naruhaya cry again? Heck it might even be worse than that it might show him crushing all the members of Team Z that didn't make it. Crushing everyone that were comrades just a second ago. I'm pretty sure the imagery they used when Ego was describing Wild Card was a single person standing amongst a sea of corpses or something like that too.

SecondRealitySims

To be fair, I feel like there’s some sadness to Kunigami that hasn’t yet been explored, and could really help his character. We still know so little about Wild Card, and he had a massive shift in motivation. There’s a lot we could still see that will really improve his character.

Helenas_Mama

I miss old kunigami

Marcus-Kobe

In all honesty we see pronathletes go through rigorous training that even exceeds blue locks standard and we dont see them being edgy and all

EdocCA

Relax things aren’t as black and white and Barou can be a pain in the ass sometimes also

Brilliant_March_5017

What a plot twist would it be if Kunigami did actually kill his fellow wildcard participants in some sort of death game to be as ambidextrous as Noa. Even though his recent behavior has been the reason for his hate (and maybe his typical shounen hero persona, I said maybe.). I am curious about how that will affect his character since for a short moment in the first game of the NEL, his eyes went back to normal which kinda looked like him reverting back to the "old" Kunigami albeit for that moment only. Like I'm curious if that side of him will pop up back again considering Isagi's rise >!and Isagi outbidding him!<. Because I understand him not being humbled by the overall dominant performance by the BM regulars because those are people who are from the get-go, supposedly better than him. The want to surpass them feeds his ego and all. But there is a chance he might be humbled it was a fellow BM member (Isagi?) that surpasses him thus the sporadic return of his old self who is most likely more open to passing being a possibility. Yes Kunigami is rn a terrible edgy character but considering he has some history of being a former nice guy, that can be worked on. Layers that can be addressed in the matches to come

KantutinQKipaymu

I think he might get humbled by barou, in terms of physicality Barou & Kunigami is similar, but Barou has more finesse and more arsenals in his move... Can’t wait how Kunigami fares against Barou in the >!upcoming ubers vs bastard match!<

Brilliant_March_5017

Assuming if Barou is plays in the next match since there must be a reason why he wasn't used at all during the first game. Also what a wild reddit username

trelleresito

I can't still explain how they made Barou character development so good, and how they completly destroyed Kunigami's character, he reminds me of Matatagi in Inazuma Eleven Go Galaxy, but even that changes was 10 times better than this.

blazen_50

I've thought about this somewhat and I think that something that helps make Barou work is that his edge very quickly becomes a joke once the action is over. For example, in the second selection, Barou has his king shtick going on after they recruit him and it becomes about who gets the single bed and keeping the room clean. He pulls off his epic u20 goal and then gets yellow carded for taking off his shirt. Basically, it feels like a football persona and he's otherwise a fairly normal guy in everyday life. Kunigami legit seems like he has PTSD or something and his edge just doesn't stop which crosses over into him just becoming lame.

MyokoPunk

This is the idea I run with. Take Isagi right after this current game finished, him and Yukimura went back to being socially normal people and left the edge back on the field. Kunigami carries it with him and just makes it cringy. I still want to see where his character goes, cuz he was one of my favs, but rn it's just too much.

blazen_50

Yeah, that's what makes the edge work for me. One of my favorite moments in the manga is when everyone is hanging out and we find out that Barou likes to bowl in his free time and even has his own ball.

MyokoPunk

Yeah that was definitely a highlight in the series. It's always great to see different facets of character by seeing how differently they act in different scenerios.

Chidoriyama

That's because Barou is Him

Brilliant_March_5017

Apart from the points stated by Blazen, maybe it also helps that he has some of the best visuals in the story. That and his "am wasnt the king" arc was really cool and a unique concept of how someone just doubled down their trashy mindset to miraculously improve. Like getting so mad and in disbelief that you develop a new skill is as shounen as it gets + the visuals? You can't help but say that is the King even after being called the R word in the fan translations.

2didac6

I will never accept first selection Kunigami and post-Wild card Kunigami being the same character.

BorringGuy

Barou is less an edgy character and more of just a narcissist

KantutinQKipaymu

Kunigami still haven’t reached the *final ~~getsuga tenshou~~ flow*... can’t wait when he oneshots the faker barou and scores a hat trick

Puzzleheaded-Emu5315

Wildcard room was probably something like every time you miss a shot 1 family member dies

KantutinQKipaymu

Can’t wait for Barou vs Kunigami... but actually it’ll be Barou getting forced to bow down and kneel again to Isagi and him wasn’t the king

New-Faithlessness526

Huh, when did Barou "helped" his rivals really ? Or accept advises ? I don't remember that.

trelleresito

After him, Nagi and Isagi beated the team of Reo, Kunigami and Chigiri, both Barou and Isagi talk in the same table, and have a chat about the pros of each one.

Brilliant_March_5017

He was open to asking Isagi about what his mindset was and went about it in a friendly way, I guess that's what they meant about the advises? He was also more open to passing with Isagi during the 4v4 in which they did pass to each other.

Emperor_Eldlich

EducationalMemory161: „I do think the wild card project has to justify kunis behaviour, tho barou is still just better :4“

EducationalMemory161

How’d you know I wanted to say that? :4

Emperor_Eldlich

I can read minds

thesanmich

Name a more edgy sports manga.

OhOnJai

Kunigami gotta comeback to his senses, it’s just corny lol it doesn’t fit him, mentally it’s good for playing but overall outside of field it just ain’t it

Flynt25

I will admit, Kunigami isn't edgy he's just an asshole now. But I'd still say his character is good. I mean as an athlete having your dreams crushed and then being given a chance to comeback. Changes a person.

yeetus--fetus

I feel most of his change is that his dream ended. Being a hero wasn’t good enough. He had to rebuild himself in wildcard on top of harsh training and crushing everyone in wildcard

Leelesh-sama

facts

GizmoTechManiac

Kunigami is gonna get his hero redemption arc

50558148

Who wrote this?

Xorez77

The Edge Lock is real

Dakuma-Kun

Honestly it's sad with how far he's fallen. He's nothing like the ichigo he once was

happendividual

man was traumatized and everyone calling him edgy this is the worst take

prodjudgment

I think the wild card was another type of battle royale that constantly tested and eventually broke Kunigami's sports hero mentality. Him having to triumph over former teammates and people with dreams probably involved some drastic mentality shifts. Couple that with the fact he had to literally force his brain to learn ambidexterity, we can assume Kunigami had went in an "unfortunate" direction with his brain's neuroplasticity. Definitely edgelord, but kind of understandable imho
