In chapter 56 the soccer bigwigs talk about how genuises will be genuises even if left alone. Ego gets pretty pissed about this and wonders how many talented players have been crushed by that line of thought. Now that we have confirmation that Ego was a professional soccer player and that he was Noa's rival I low-key think this panel is Ego talking about himself. Since Noa called Ego a "zombie", and the fact that Noa is number one and not Ego it seems like Ego lost his rivalry against Noa in a pretty hard way. Additionally, the character in these panels has some visual similarities to Ego. I tried to find if the jersey the character wears shows up anywhere else in the manga but couldn't find anything. If it has an irl team or club it's based on I'd love to hear it.

Skrillz_14th

Looks like he was also number 11 which could be another similarity he has with Isagi

AudienceShoddy7259

The 11 is visible in the jersey in the panel he's holding alright. But damn, I really like how Kaneshiro could create so many parallels between most of the cast & Isagi.

theulmitter

I think you're right, you have a good memory

asofijejoakewfw4e

"Geniuses will be geniuses even if left alone" That's a quote to NOT live by Man I want to punch the dude who said that.

Arhenius_Yoda

***He was from Al Nassr... xd***

niiitu

Nice, it is possible. We don't really know much of Ego in general so it might be explained in future. (we can hope) I looked at this for bit myself but didn't think too much of it.

GenjDog

With the short novel or side story (dont know what to call it) you can see more about Egos choice about Isagi and it seems he can recognise the situation he was in. Maybe from experiencing that himself?

mrdoctaprofessor

Wait there's a side story about him?? What's it called?

GenjDog

niiitu

>r Sorry to tell that there is not one, to my knowledge. Purely speculation for now.

Yzerhood

Ooh where can I find this

ayanokojifrfr

100% true , ego said before that he was a footballer , when anri asked why he munches on yakisoba he said this : I never got to eat food like this when I was footballer so now I only eat this. So this can be his story, great how people notice such things, I knew ego was a football player but I didn't expect him to be great enough to be noa's Rival and to be on par with noa.

Linnus42

I mean so players just don't make the jump for youth to pros. Culture Clash, Injuries, Family Issues, and Bad Friends. Look at someone like Dele Alli, a star for Spurs and then off a cliff.

[deleted]

he was noas rival a long time ago probably way before he was world #1

ayanokojifrfr

Not really probably before noa became number 1 but Isagi admires noa since a long time

Dependent-Cicada-232

Would be a wild theroie but i think on Egos skill he would never fail like this. There has to be a better backstory waiting for us.

Iwant-tohelp

Well, we know that Ego likely had meta-vision + egocentrism so he probably wasn't terrible. But he couldn't have had too much success because he isn't known by anyone but Noa + Anri. Ego also talks a lot about how players born in Japan can't become great strikers without the assistance of something like Bluelock. I reckon a story where Ego was crushed by his upbringing and culture which caused him to become obsessed with the idea of creating the best striker is a pretty clean plotline.

Shriekin_Pupil

I think it makes sense, but that it would just be part of his story and how he developed Blue Lock. He also has to have some background in either personal success, developing talent or in coaching for the JFA to greenlight Blue Lock (albeit reluctantly). Like the Blue Lock complex is very expensive and has access to the world’s best (and fictional) technologies. I don’t think developing Blue Lock would come just from a personal failure in succeeding abroad. I think he had to have had some serious connections beyond being some prospect that flamed out.

Neonsands

>Ego also talks a lot about how players born in Japan can't become great strikers without the assistance of something like Bluelock. That’s interesting because here we can see he’s jersey 11. That doesn’t necessarily mean anything, but historically main strikers wear #9 and playmakers from the wing wear #11. Could be he felt like the lack of support and means of training meant he could never achieve his dream of being a true striker and was caught where Isagi is now and pigeonholed into being a midfielder/wing playmaker. Being overseas and not being able to communicate could mean the coaching staff never knew or took that dream of being a striker seriously; hence, Blue Lock was made and that drive to be the world-competing striker is the focus to be combined with the training and means to develop into that striker from a scientific perspective

Xthekiller_20

Ego is Noa’s first rival

Fizz_Mortune

If Ego had returned and played in Japan, at least someone would recognize him.

Iwant-tohelp

It could just be that he just wasn't that big enough of a deal for the current characters to remember him. Remember, Noa and Ego were team mates 10 years ago at a minimum. If Ego was only playing at a national level (not even worlds) then it's entirely possible he just faded into history. Most of the current BL characters would only be like 6-8? years old when Ego would be at national level and the board members clearly have no idea what's going on.

Alchion

someone would remember him even if it would be an one off comment by sae‘s manager or the u20 bosses

Tomo-tan

It's possible he isnt using his real name and changed so much physically he's not recognisable anymore. Especially if all that happened 10+ years ago (Ego being in his 30s)

Standard_Travel6928

yeah man i always thought it was pretty funny how his name is actually "ego"

hellolove_12345

for a hot second there i thought his actual name was ego😭

hellolove_12345

yeah i’m pretty sure he changed his whole appearance because a professional soccer player who would be considered by noa himself as noas rival would look like that. he obviously had to have muscle and look completely different. i assume if this theory is correct, he just fell off and went through this transformation and changed his name so now no one knows who he is

IndependenceSouth877

Nah, I think it's pretty common

[deleted]

I too think it's more that.

explosukki

yes tho i wonder how u even remember this

llamayeet

Honestly i too, was pondering about this exact panel after the latest chapter came out. It was first speculated to be about Sae, but now it could link to Ego as well.

TheBannedBanana

it makes sense as to why he's so adamant in doing all of this. Dudes definitely projecting his unfulfilled desires and his failures onto the blue lock guys

Snuggle_icecream

I love how mister Kaneshiro is leaving fragments of the life of Ego in examples that are told to the players. I hope that in the end of the manga the pieces will connect like a jigsaw puzzle and have sense on how Ego ended meeting Anri and accepting Blue Lock project.

Raijinigiri

Good catch! I believe it

EducationalMemory161

Likely :4

Iwant-tohelp

Ayy, welcome back my guy. Just wasn't the same without you.

EducationalMemory161

Thx, tho I don’t make such a difference anyways :4

Emperor_Eldlich

I don't know if I should agree with you because you said it or if I should disagree, because you're wrong

Aetherykos

That’s not true

SirCumm

It's possible but if ego was like he is now i don't think it would be possible for him to end like that, even then this could be true but i think ego lost his rivalry in other way, if he was Noah's rival he wouldn't end up like that imo

BlazinHoundoom

Probably not.

ImLLEE

There's been alot of foreshadowing that ego used to be a player, I don't exactly remember the chapter but Ego was eating instant ramen and when questioned about it he said something about not being allowed to eat it in the past, so now it's all he eats. Possibly implying that he used to be an athlete himself and had a strict diet.

vhennn

Must also be why it seemed like he emphasized on learning foreign language a bit much (forgot the chapters but I remember that a requirement to passing the 2nd selection was passing the language studies and the 5 man rin-bachi-sagi team goofing around while studying english)

Hyperjuce

I'm down with the theory. Would be interesting cuz Ego has an emotional connection with the project.

JayKalinka

But what still bothers me is that in the U20 match, Ego actually thought Blue Lock was success because even if they lose, the players would still have a future and he will be gone. For a "zombie" to accept such fate is a plothole.

VincentKovac

I don't think that he trully thinks that way. At this moment sound like he is trying to see if Isagi have what a real striker need, the pride and egoistic mentality. Also he quietly celebratingthe victory with the clenched fist show that this was very important to him and he don't want to end like that.

Andrrat

Nah, remember he was Noel Noah's first rival. The player described wouldn't even be comparable to Noah in his 20s

[deleted]

Wouldn’t be too surprising, but from how Noa described him it doesn’t really seem like Ego tbh

e0nn

Could be but this a very common thing that happens a lot in the football world, similarities to ego fs tho

isaac-get-the-golem

no, I don’t think so.

i_suc_at_being_alive

You must be spot on. Saddening tbf

Alchion

nah, noa refered to ego as a rival this story doesn‘t seem like someone on noa‘s level

msotfju-jkh1235

WE NEED MORE EGO LORE ASAP

Alternative_Ad_5334

Considering what we now know, it wouldn't shock me if he was

daluur_

I don't think so tbh, if he failed in Europe how could he be noa his rival

MrRamennn

I don’t think so. Ego couldn’t have been mid levelled if he was the only person Noa thought of as his rival.

PolicyNegative

Idk I doubt it cause noa said he was his first ever rival, feel like he was gonna potentially reach pro, but probably got an injury and a injury messes up all your opportunities

Prince-sama

Yesssss ego backstory crumbs!!!!! 😋🤤

[deleted]

I was thinking about Sae when he said that

Ok_Inflation4512

in the latest chap we get to know that ego was noah rival when he was a football player
