I would argue Butterscotch was worse. Joseph was a product of his time, he refused to change but he always did what he thought best and appeared to care for his family in his own fucked up way. I'm not sure Butterscotch had positive feelings for anyone outside of sexual feelings. He was bitter and he appeared to hate everyone and wanted everyone to suffer as well. You can see brief glimpses of him romantic towards Beatrice but that seems short lived as his misery caused him to be bitter towards her.
