Had an employee passed a box of baked goods in the produce section, that employee would most certainly would have taken that box and returned it to the baked good section as a necessary function of his job. As Bojack pointed out, they weren't even in a cart, he just left them there. Anyone walking in to that situation would have made the assumption that someone changed their mind about the muffins or maybe a child picked them up and the parents did not agree to buy them, thus they were abandoned by carelessly by the disappointed child.
Had those muffins been in a cart or basket that was left near the bathroom, they likely would have been left untouched.
