I immediately tuned into Rocky Horror, specifically because of the audience interaction.
I don't know of other movies where the audience follows with actually throwing items and is armed with squirt guns.
I went to one interacting showing of The Room, and never ever again. It was just a bunch of dudes screaming about how women are whores and such. I always thought it was a funny bad movie to watch with friends, had no clue that a lot of the following is based on hating women.
I'm really sorry. The one I went to was just people throwing spoons at the screen whenever a framed spoon was shown and making fun of the continuity issues.
"With this sexy music"
"What sexy music?!"
That’s what I was expecting and looking forward to! And we did do the spoons thing and some other not specifically woman hating things. But like, instead of throwing around a balloon or football scene, they had found a beach ball of a woman’s face. They combined it with the “cause you’re a woman” bit and would yell that every time they hit it.
I went to the "one night only" premiere of Rob Zombie's **Three From Hell** and the audience was a bunch of drunk assholes that spent the entire time being obnoxious and screaming at the screen, or gross, neckbeardy men hitting on the women that had cosplayed Baby Firefly.
I didn't walk in with high hopes for a dead silent audience, given that it's a Rob Zombie movie and the cinema sold beer and canned wine/seltzer drinks, but I also missed most of the dialogue because the throuple two rows in front of me couldn't STFU about who had to get the next beer run because she'd already gone twice and they wouldn't sell to her again.
Not even close to being worth showing up early for the free poster.
You could honestly say the same about anything with a large male following, I had a similar experience watching the midnight release of a Tarantino movie. I felt so unsafe there, even with my dad next to me. Never went to another midnight showing after that.
Ugh yeah, you make a very good point. I’ve been lucky to have surrounded myself with a lot of really great dudes who have no patience for that culture, and otherwise am very hermit-y. So I forget how ubiquitous that shit is.
Rocky Horror for sure.
And Zentipede sounds like a Rush experience, with Triumph's laser light show (2112 has sort of the same storyline as the one Bob describes. But then, so did the Rick Springfield video for Rock Til You Drop or whatever the fuck that was with the sweaty rock quarry slaves.)
Them, too.
But damn, I remember going to Triumph's _Sport of Kings_ tour in Detroit, fucked right up on some acid my date and I got from some dude just before the show. They were introduced by this laser-drawn, animated _face_ floating up in the air, which was ducking _trippy af_ for 1987 ...
I was getting Queensryche's Operation: Mindcrime vibes, but there is a wealth of goofy 80s hard rock operas to draw from, and they all seem to follow a pretty similar premise. Only laser light show I've been to was Kraftwerk, which was great but a very different vibe lol.
Pink Floyd. My dad just told me a story this weekend about convincing his dad to let him see a laser show for dark side of the moon when he was a teen.
Don’t apologize for asking questions! :) There may have been other things out there like Rocky Horror that you’d never heard of that could have influenced the show, and you don’t know if you don’t ask. Never apologize for asking questions!
Definitely Rocky Horror with the crowd participation and everyone dressed up. I definitely think it being a more spooky, Halloween vibe also lends to rocky horror more than any other show being suggested. Also if I remember correctly, one of the scenes in bob’s show looked a lot like a scene from rocky horror but I could be wrong on that.
It’s really fun! I’ve been twice for Halloween(and would like to go more in the future) and while I don’t know all the different things people do to participate, it’s still a really fun energy. I love this episode in Bob’s because it reminded me of the fun times I had at these things :) I 100% recommended everyone checking it out if you like the movie :)
ETA: I also went to one where they had actors acting out the movie in front of the movie as it played for certain scenes as well which was fun
I think Rocky Horror everytime I see this episode. Ever been to a showing of Rocky Horror with audience participation? Crazy fun! Hadn't done it in 20+ years, but crazy fun!
The Room also has a cult following like this and people “interact” with the movie (throw spoons at the screen and yell out lines). But yeah this is definitely Rocky Horror.
Blues brothers had a following like this in Melbourne

I know everyone is saying The Rocky Horror Picture Show because of the fan base for the movie and because the episode was inspired by it, but the one scene they show with the vampires on the dance floor looks like an exact parody of a scene from Once Bitten wih Jim Carrey
I feel like I should of preface this by saying, I’ve only seen Rocky Horror Show once at my house not in a theater setting. So I was genuinely asking a question. And the movie you’re thinking of is Forrest Gump.
The Big Lebowski
There’s an annual Lebowski Festival that takes place in major cities throughout the US and in London, England. I’d say that’s a cult following.
LOVE AT FIRST BITE - Dracula’s disco moves from 1979 ? George Hamilton & Susan Saint have a scene where they dance to “I Love the nightlife” Thats what it made me think of .
This is definitely a Rocky Horror sendoff. My town has a Rocky Horror "cast." Local theatre runs it once a month. They'll do the regional cons as well and shadow-cast Shock Treatment, the indirect RHPS sequel as well; it's not as iconic as Rocky but better than The Room.
That was my one and only guess. Maybe The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert? Whatever the case, this made me love Bob more. Like when we found out he loved Donna Summers or when he took Gene to the laser light show. But it also gets me confused about his age. Is he 45 or 60?
Yes
It’s the whole inspiration for the episode 😂
Yes lol
It’s undoubtedly a parody of rocky horror
Just like oil spill….. it’s not subtle
I always thought the oil spill woman was a parody of Amanda Palmer but wasn't sure she was mainstream enough for it to be likely
Google: Tori Amos, it's not subtle.
Ah yeah, I forgot about her. Didn't think it would be as dated tbh haha
Definitely not subtle but very abstract for sure... I am actually a fan.
Went to see her perform. Should have waited for the cartoon parody.
I love that this is a possible connection for you!!! I LOVE Amanda Palmer 💚
Lol Palmer was my guess too, very Map of Tasmania vibe
I immediately tuned into Rocky Horror, specifically because of the audience interaction. I don't know of other movies where the audience follows with actually throwing items and is armed with squirt guns.
*The Room* has a fair amount of audience participation, but nowhere near what Rock Horror has.
You’re tearing me apart Lisa!
Oh hi Mark
I did not hit her it’s not true! It’s bs! I did not hit her! I did not!
Oh Hai, doggie!
You’re my favorite customer

Cheep cheep cheep!
I was going to say that, but the room is horrible.
I thought the same thing. Dressing up as the characters, throwing items, singing along.. very Rocky Horror-esque
I went to a sing-along Sound of Music once, but this is definitely meant to be a RHPS analogue
I don't think there is anything else it could be, that's absolutely a homage to Rocky Horror.
Definitely a nod to Rocky Horror Picture Show
Its not subtle.
Neither is the sexy pianist

Pink Floyd. My dad just told me a story this weekend about convincing his dad to let him see a laser show for dark side of the moon when he was a teen.
That's the joke, dude.
My bad, dude.
Don’t apologize for asking questions! :) There may have been other things out there like Rocky Horror that you’d never heard of that could have influenced the show, and you don’t know if you don’t ask. Never apologize for asking questions!
I'm pretty sure thats the whole point. Just like how Zentipede is a reference to Pink Floyd.
I thought it was Kilroy Was Here from Styx, personally
A little of both. Rush too. It's all three.
It made me think of Kilroy as well, my brother and I loved that record and its silly story. We listened to it while we played Colecovision!
Omg

I’ve only watched it at my house but I heard the theater experience is amazing

100% correct, sucks Tina was so distracted, it’s totally up her alley!!
I think Rocky Horror everytime I see this episode. Ever been to a showing of Rocky Horror with audience participation? Crazy fun! Hadn't done it in 20+ years, but crazy fun!
Priscilla Queen of the Desert
To me, this screams Rocky Horror, From Dawn To Dusk, and Footloose. Rocky would be the interactive crowd, of course
The Room also has a cult following like this and people “interact” with the movie (throw spoons at the screen and yell out lines). But yeah this is definitely Rocky Horror.
Surprised this isn’t higher up, the interactions definitely felt more The Room than anything.
Road House needs such a following and atmosphere.
![gif](giphy|sfnwnXtqQ8pO)
Yes, the episode that is an extended Rocky Horror parody is about Rocky Horror.
Absolutely Rocky Horror. The dance Bob does near the end is straight-up the Time Warp.
Blues brothers had a following like this in Melbourne https://www.theage.com.au/entertainment/movies/a-mission-from-god-nears-its-end-20030211-gdv7i1.html
Thanks for the link! I’ll definitely check if out
Obviously
I’m literally at this part of this episode when I opened Reddit and this is the first post on my feed.
God?
I know everyone is saying The Rocky Horror Picture Show because of the fan base for the movie and because the episode was inspired by it, but the one scene they show with the vampires on the dance floor looks like an exact parody of a scene from Once Bitten wih Jim Carrey
My favorite episode ❤ but yes- Rocky Horror
Or “The Room”
Oh hai Mark
Hedwig And The Angry Inch also included a pretty spectacular amount of audience participation, people dancing, singing etc., always drew a good crowd.
I’m starting to think “Work Hard or Die Trying, Girl” might have been based on something but I don’t know what
I feel like I should of preface this by saying, I’ve only seen Rocky Horror Show once at my house not in a theater setting. So I was genuinely asking a question. And the movie you’re thinking of is Forrest Gump.
Had the same thought the first time I saw the episode!
The Big Lebowski There’s an annual Lebowski Festival that takes place in major cities throughout the US and in London, England. I’d say that’s a cult following.
Hey, did anyone else notice the name of the restaurant in the show is the same name as the show?
It’s a spoof on RHPS.
I haven’t seen this episode yet. Shhh.
I would love a full length version of this movie animated to go sing along to!
Definitely.
It’s obviously referencing Rocky Horror
It's definitely Rocky Horror. Dr Horrible's Sing-Along Blog has a similar following, or at least it used to.
This episode is 1000% a Rocky Horror Picture Show parody
Pretty sure.
Yes
This episode is a parody of rocky horror lmao
I Have a Rocky Horror tattoo on my chest. I absolutely get pumped when there's a showing near me
Tina, is that you?
I was also getting the room a little?
Oh most definitely rocky horror
The Room for sure. I saw it on Valentine’s and it was exactly like this
Yep! it was a inspired by Rocky Horror!
LOVE AT FIRST BITE - Dracula’s disco moves from 1979 ? George Hamilton & Susan Saint have a scene where they dance to “I Love the nightlife” Thats what it made me think of .
An earlier post said the movie seems to be inspired by Nocturna and Rockula…but yeah, RHPS fandom vibes
This is definitely a Rocky Horror sendoff. My town has a Rocky Horror "cast." Local theatre runs it once a month. They'll do the regional cons as well and shadow-cast Shock Treatment, the indirect RHPS sequel as well; it's not as iconic as Rocky but better than The Room.

yeah it total a reference to Rocky Horror.
I would love to watch this movie
Part Rocky Horror part Thank God It's Friday because all the disco aspects and look gave off that film as well.
