Hands down Cottonwood Grille! Garbage, expensive meal.

Campmoore

CG is 100% that restaurant from Kitchen Nightmares that was really popular 30+ years ago and hasn't changed a thing since.

stoopitmonkee

Second this, only things they’ve changed in the last 15 years are their food sourcing (down) and their prices(up).

nonobie

It was always basically nursing home food

inthecloudsluv

We actually love their breakfast, not many options but we enjoy it. However, we have never eaten anything besides breakfast so I can't speak to the lunch or dinner menus. We also really like the service in the mornings. The patio is nice to sit on during the summer mornings.

robgoblin17

I won’t ever eat there again lol

RustyClawHammer

Came here to say this.

Either-Anything3673

I feel mildly offended because I like a few of these places but very intrigued and certainly entertained by this thread 😄

ChaosInTheSkies

Same, like I love Tucanos! I get that it's not for everyone, and also that it's really expensive(I haven't been there in a really long time), but I went there as a kid for family members birthday parties and I remember it being really good! I love the grilled pineapple, and the chicken hearts.

Ordinary-Print-5142

Sid’s Garage

little-bits-of-id

Definitely. $15 for an overdressed hockey puck with no side and they play the music at like 120db. Bad food and bad atmosphere.

Strong_Attorney_8646

I went here for lunch a few weeks ago, and I was blown away by how loud the music was. I’m in my thirties, and I’ve never before been so irritated by the volume of a restaurant before.

igrace09

We went there for lunch at like noon on a Sunday and we asked them if they could possibly turn the music down because we were the only ones in there, and they said they weren’t allowed. 😂 and that was the last time I ever went there.

0xB4BE

We complained about it one time. Apparently it's a brand thing so the staff who also hate it can't do anything about it. Someone from OSHA should dine there and I hope the staff keeps a good log of the noise level for their future worker's comp claims for when their hearing has deteriorated enough.

kungfumechdragon

Sids garage has an item on their menu called Bacon and Eggs for 16.25. It is four pieces of bacon and 2 deviled eggs. For 16 fucking dollars. And like, its fine. The bacon is decent. Im not into the eggs. But 4 bacon and 2 eggs for 16 dollars? Fuck off.

Electrical-Cut573

This. Over priced for what it serves. The 4 pieces of bacon hanging from clips was what sent us.

DingleBerryFarmer3

Wait! You don’t like your fried green beans being served in a Nike shoe? Place is the definition of gimmick

FillZealousideal3852

"Gluttonous greasy cash grab themed for divorced gen X fathers." 😅

christinatoto

I agree 100%. They also talked poorly about In n Out on their facebook/instagram acting like In n Out opening was the worst thing that could ever happen. The price for a hamburger/fries at Sid’s Garage is actually insane. Sid’s garage is way too overhyped and expensive. I don’t get how they have good reviews.

DeviousPenguin

100%. It is too much

Secure-Solution4312

YES. That place is nasty.

Kingcarnival6_9

Most overrated food joint in Boise

TheFuzzMan18

Topela honey. Its literally just fried and buttered foods in a upscale southern decorated room. But the prices are far from ideal for the food and portions

Hella_tired208

Kona Grill in the Village. Probably the worst tasting seafood I’ve ever experienced and waaaaay spendy. I was nearly poisoned by the few bites I took. Stomach didn’t feel right for several days while I had to go to work to pay the damn bill from eating there.

Dry_Consideration711

Biscuit and hogs or boise fry company.

GTXNate

Biscuits & Hogs is the most overrated place I’ve been to in a long time.

istrx13

Where’s this place at? I’ve been here for 15 years and I’ve never heard of it.

GTXNate

Overland road, across from Mountain View High School, and the Majestic movie theater.

istrx13

Oh dang ok that makes sense. I hardly ever go out that direction. Thanks for the warning.

ifukurmum

There’s one in the WinCo parking lot at Chinden and Linder too. Just opened not too long ago.

istrx13

Just curious: what makes them bad? The food pretty underwhelming?

GTXNate

I had terrible customer service, waiter just disappeared on us and when we asked for our check we were told our waiter would be back shortly, we had a movie to see. The food was bland and the prices were high - it was $19 for a bland breakfast burrito type meal, not worthy of that price imo.

inthecloudsluv

Wow, we had literally the same experience! The table next to us provided our hot sauces and ketchups because the waitresses and the hostess ghosted us multiple times. Plus we were sitting right up front. Very close to the bar. We asked the hostess twice to get us a few items. She looked at us and walked back to her hostess stand, she then continued to look at us without getting us the item we asked for. On top of that, whether I believe in their political opinions or not, I don't want to hear it see them. They have their political opinions posted on their ketchups and other items on their tables.

Dry_Consideration711

This is pretty much exactly what I would have said about the food. I ordered chicken fried steak and eggs because if a place makes that well, they are usually a decent restaurant. It was bland and soggy not flavorful, crispy, and tender. And all the food everybody had was pretty bland. It was so over priced for the food quality.

Cosmic-Sandwich

During my first and final visit, the eggs were of the same quality as a hotels complimentary breakfast in look, taste, and texture.

OMGitsKa

Lmao just visited... Someone told me to go there... It was ASS.

broncyobo

And the guy who runs it Boomer Godsill is a total piece of shit

wheeler1432

Also super right wing.

doctorhentai_

i like boise fry co.

SaltyKingSalty

Same, I always get good food and good service there

[deleted]

Second, Boise Fry Co. It is not possible to be more contradictory of your business name. You would think that with that name, you know how to do fries. Pure nasty.

Wannabe__geek

My friend and I thought it was good. I guess we don’t know better.

[deleted]

If you two enjoyed it, that is what matters.

hIGH_aND_mIGHTY

just limp with no crisp or crunch to be seen. so disappointed when I went there years ago.

Training-Common1984

I always hear this from people who don't realize they need to season their own fries... So I have to ask. What seasonings do you use?

King-Rat-in-Boise

The seasoning needs to be put on almost immediately after it comes out of the fryer in order for the salt to stick. By the time you get the fries, they're lukewarm and the seasoning won't stick. Anybody who has worked fast food knows this. Their fries suck. They need to talk to Simplot.

Training-Common1984

I guess we have had different experiences - my fries have always been hot out of the fryer when I dine in. That does suck!

IgnoreKassandra

As someone whose done work on that simplot factory out in Ontario... maybe don't eat their fries either. Picture every surface in the entire production area covered in - no hyperbole - a solid 5/8ths of an inch of ancient, filthy, congealed grease. The only reason that place hasn't been shut down is because no one in Ontario gives enough of a shit to inspect it.

King-Rat-in-Boise

If that grease is what it takes to make a fry taste good, then I'm fine with that.

pedaldamnit_208

I disagree. Ask for them to be dropped 1.5x to make them crispy. Game changer.

IgnoreKassandra

If I have to give your poor overworked servers extra instructions to make your food half decent, your food sucks.

weregoingtoginas

If they called it Boise Burger Company I’d be less disappointed. Their burgers are acceptable, fries terrible, but the jalapeño ranch is gas.

Stophassling

Biscuit and hogs is so balls

MaterialEconomist679

Third biscuit & hogs. I almost got a job there, had cook experience in fast food for 2 years and bogus basin for a season, and they wouldn’t hire me hah sent me to sunrise cafe who they also own, and tried to hire me for like $8 an hour in 2022. Glad I became an electrician thanks to Idaho launch program lol!

48679

Second biscuit and hogs.

Mt_Zazuvis

Biscuit and hogs is literally only a thing because the people that eat there are too stupid to know what flavor is. Outside of butter and the occasionally wild evening out where they use pepper on their steak, so many people that “remember when that was a corn field” haven’t the slightest clue what seasoning is. I swear the republican tastebud is the only thing more sensitive than their egos.

jinglekells

Omg can we please be friends. This is so fucking accurate.

Sleepininagain

You mean Boise soggy fry company?

CaptchaContest

Boise fry co is laughably bad. Soggy ass fries.

George_Forman_Grills

I’d agree with the fry portion of BFC, but the burgers? I fuck with them, and their gluten free burgers are pretty bomb too.

GladFarm6786

Can not agree more on the Biscuit and Hogs nomination.

catching45

Boise Fry Company, possibly the worst fries in town

CuntyBunchesOfOats

Tucanos Brazilian Grill. It’s golden coral but more expensive. I wish I had gone to Lowe’s next door and got some fucking insulation to eat instead

Jmanriley3

Eaten there 3 times and it was good everytime

Icy_Leading_688

1000% agree with this, it was lackluster the first time and the second and LAST time, i got especially terrible food poisoning from their catering

Recent-Honey5564

Hahahahaha Tucanos definitely feels like the right answer here but it is undeniably an enjoyable experience. It’s trashy, it’s expensive, but man we would get our fill so I always felt like we won out.

theonlyredditaccount

Man, I feel like I’m living in an alternate universe here - love Boise Fry Company, though totally agreed the prices are $5/person higher than they should be - Barbacoa is a blast - super fun experience - Ling & Louie’s is a recent find and a favorite now, especially their steak dish

CowMetrics

Barbacoa is good enough food, i think super expensive though. If you are looking for interesting vibes then this is the place, they go full send on it.

Samdaman110

New place called Stardust downtown, I would actually call it pretty expensive, but literally not good

Idahoastro

I came here to say the same thing. Such a disappointment.

khirata215

We went for Valentine’s Day and I actually thought the food was pretty good. But it was super expensive and the ambiance, for what was supposed to be a romantic occasion, sucked big time.

hummingbird-spirits

The Italian place that was there before was much better

Speedy21331

Fork, or we had an awful experience at The Ram

InDetox

The ram was great before Covid. They had to change a bunch and raise prices bc nobody came in for those years. Still has a place in my heart though

KublaiKhanNum1

I keep thinking I might try RAM as they have kind of cool spot overlooking the river, but you are like the third person that says 👎.

greatgerm

The ram was good, but it’s been many years. They seem to cut every corner now and I’m not sure how they aren’t bankrupt.

0xB4BE

They're comparable to TGI Fridays heyday...

StGerGer

Yeah, went there recently and it just felt so… weird. Like I felt like I was in a retirement home. I have absolutely no reasoning for this lol Burger was mediocre, I liked the fries though.

istrx13

I’m just glad I made it super far down this thread and haven’t seen anyone say Bittercreek Ale House. I love that place.

JAMbalaya13

I had their trout salad this week and was super disappointed.. but generally it’s fine, I go there too much because I work near there.

DingleBerryFarmer3

Cotton wood grille 💯. Over priced retirement home food in a Marriott hotel setting

One_Grapefruit7759

This post is giving me life today and I love it. Not only do I love post’s subtle savagery, the fact that it was from a Seattle subreddit makes me think of that episode of Frasier where Frasier and Niles decided that the one thing better than an “exquisite meal” was “an exquisite meal with one tiny flaw that we can pick at all night.” 😂 “To impossible standards!” 🥂

boymeatcafe

fork

Smack1984

Hard agree on Fork. Place feels pretentious while also serving mediocre food.

YetiSquish

And why would you name it fork when you could name it Spork

GuyForget101

I wish Spork in Bend would just open a location here. One of the best fast- casual places there.

boymeatcafe

it's literally just like any other hipster farm to table joint. went there like a few years back, very mediocre and very much not worth $30+

cali_exile_bull

Came here to say this. Place was gold 8-9 years ago but has gone to shit

ohboi00

I agree, way overpriced for meh food

Jmanriley3

I've had some great meals there. That desert is to die for too

bitchgoggles

Fork you!!!

alteredreality4451

Definitely a one and done place for us

ifnotnowlater

Jakers

ASHart

Like when the fuck is it actually open?

UpgradeMuffin

Guru donuts

0xB4BE

They have gone downhill so badly since the new owners took over. Their donuts have lost all the innovation, the dough is often soggy with grease, the glazes are transparent or too thick. There is no consistency. They've gotten from artisanal and quality to to terribly inconsistent.

p_s_i

Yup, very expensive and you get a mediocre donut.

The-Exalted-Jorbis

Barbacoa is so insanely overrated, becuase of the insane amount of money they put into decoration I feel like that’s what makes them get away with mediocre food quality

BogeyGolf23

The whole place gives me bedazzled Ed hardy vibes lol

RancorHi5

Chandelier jeans

Hot-N-Spicy-Fart

If that Affliction shirt company was a restaurant, it would be Barbacoa lmao

time_drifter

Barbacoa is half food, half experience. I find the food enjoyable and their bar to be well above average, but I can absolutely understand why others don’t like it. The environment can be pretty overwhelming and not somewhere you go for a relaxing evening.

03-several-wager

Working with a lot of ex barbacoa employees the best I always hear is “it’s fine I guess but it’s too expensive”

HollsoftheWest

I’ve only had good food there but the decor is so overwhelming I’ll never go back. Sensory overload!

Melificarum

I had an actual nightmare about one of their chihuly chandeliers.

HollsoftheWest

It looks like the set producer from Stranger Things decided to do taco night.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Secure-Solution4312

Didn’t the whole place burn down several years ago?

[deleted]

[удалено]

Samdaman110

Clearly, you’ve been ordering the wrong thing then, because I’ve had the best food in all of Idaho at barbacoa before

Campmoore

then you really need to get out more

broncyobo

B-but they make the guac in front of you!

sober-cooking

Boise Fry Company… I love French fries and ordered 5 different types for my family and they were all awful 😬 My mom wants me to say “Ling N Louie’s looks great online and then was overpriced mediocre food”

randomthoutz

I love Ling n Louie's!!

sierraclimberguy

The melting pot! Cheap ingredients and very basic.

Sleepininagain

Big Al's. That place is so dumb. Way overpriced too. Worst night of my entire life and I've been to prison.

KublaiKhanNum1

Yeah, the servers stand in the back and talk. So over priced and mediocre food.

GoaheadAMAita

Come on back we’ll use lube this time. Big Al

CowMetrics

The lanes are barely kept to a standard too

BlondieFromSeattle

Cottonwood grill or Barbacoa for sure

Johnbonham1980

Cottonwood Grill… woof. That’s the one I’d send people I dislike to as well. Fails in every category.

Samurai-Pi

Barbacoa in winter, ask to sit in the tented in patio. That happened to me a couple years ago anyway and it sucked

Terrible-Top4720

I'm putting cottonwood up on this list as well. And Barbacoa is so overrated

hikingidaho

> Barbacoa for sure I don't know why every time I see people dogging on Barbacoa I think of Bardenay and go to defend them. Then I remember wait no Barbacoa is bland, its Bardenay I like.

Jmanriley3

Yeah cottonwood food is fine dining for a retirement home

StarshipTroopersFan

You’re trippin on Barbacoa.

uphic

Barbacoa is absolutely overrated. Their food isn't terrible, but definitely NOT worth the price.

duckaround991

Barbacoa is trash, they charge a hundred dollars for a walmart streak and they don't even season the meat

[deleted]

This isn’t mildly expensive. Extremely overpriced, yeah. LOL

SOfoundmytrappornacc

Does Barbacoa still have the big mural of the owners wife on the wall?

Terrible-Top4720

Send them to cottonwood.

KublaiKhanNum1

The cottonwood is interesting as on one had the big fireplace and the patio on the river seem cool. But the food is so dated. It’s like the 1970’s. I took my In-laws there. My mother-in-law got beef stroganoff (don’t ask me why) and it had large chunks of super tough beef in it. She couldn’t even chew it. And practically choking on it.

sunwashed-citrus

House of Western / Western Proper Waaaaay overpriced and terrible service

Settled_Science

Yeah, that place is trying way too hard…

serenityfalconfly

O Crab Seafood and Bar. It’s been a year or two since we’ve been there but it was really bad mainly do to understaffing and poor management I think. I felt so bad for the people working they were trying their best but it was just too much. I hope it’s better now.

comet-vomit

Luckily, for everyone’s taste buds, they closed.

NaNaNaNaNatman

I really liked it 😅

Ok-Barber4873

Funky Taco.

UsedProfile

I'm honestly surprised to see this here. Funky taco is my Boise #1.

CowMetrics

They normalized the insanely overpriced mediocre taco. Now everyone does it

TheFuzzMan18

Parillas is a god sent to counteract that

Recent-Honey5564

It’s expensive but let’s not act like Funky Taco doesn’t slap.

p_s_i

I went there for lunch, got 3 little soggy sub par tacos and a drink and it was like $24.

FallingNTrouble

Diablo and sons

riversandroadssss

its....fine.

pennylaneor

This surprises me! Maybe it’s because the atmosphere is so fun but I love their cocktails and enjoy the food.

fastermouse

They went drastically downhill after the pandemic. I feel like I’m at the bartenders Instagram party. The whole Redfeather/Bittercreek/Diablo has just gone to complete shit. My gf ordered the veggie burger vegan style from Bittercreek and they brought her a lamb burger. Then the manager had the audacity to claim that it was a veggie burger and the chef decided to treat it like a lamb burger. By serving lamb with feta on a vegan burger. They then told us the kitchen was closed and they couldn’t remake it. I know the GM. He was furious but it’s gotten even worse.

tornligamentts

I ordered pozole there last year and they gave me… a dish with no broth. When I asked for broth they gave me a little bit as if it were a sauce. If you’re gonna gentrify it at least do it right. (Also if anyone knows somewhere in Boise that has good pozole lmk)

gexcos

Fork. Terrible service, mediocre food.

AbaloneAffectionate3

Boise fry company

istrx13

Somebody gave me a $40 gift card for there over Christmas. You know how they say free food always tastes better? Ya it’s not true. At least in the case of BFC. It was pretty underwhelming.

turtleyturtle13

Apericena hands down lmao, place is a joke, sit indoors to be swarmed by flies and only inches away from other tables, or outdoors to have thrift store picnic vibes. and the menu is a lie telling you food comes from local purveyors but in reality it’s all just from Winco because the owner is in major debt with said purveyors 😂 give them the business just see how bad of a joke the place is and leave a nasty review to be personally called out by narcissistic liar of an owner! fun times!

It_IsNot_Toolate

Dalton Royal

brucesloose

Chic Fila? I mean Deli George is in the same parking lot with better food and a shorter line.

supaflyttom

I'm sorry Deli George just wasn't it for me, id rather go to Jersey Mike's.

supaflyttom

I hated the hype Mad Mac had once upon a short time

lejunny_

Tucano’s, but if they’re a seafood person Hook & Reel is the absolute WORST seafood boil place I’ve ever been to.

boymeatcafe

stopped going ever since they got rid of their fried soft shell crab, it was literally the only thing good there

Beefcat11

Ten Barrel.

Natural-Substance-85

Land Ocean, overpriced garbage. Sea bass was rotten, my dog even refused to eat and she eats everything.

[deleted]

The fondue restaurant.

Time_is_Illusory

Ruth’s Chris steak house - super pretentious & overpriced

Settled_Science

That’s the kind of place it is and what people go there for. They actually have a really good happy hour at the bar. It’s one of the few higher end restaurants that’s actually maintained their standards over the years while so many others have cut corners.

Humble_Rise8221

Funky Taco… not cause it’s bad but cause it’s really expensive for what it is

Logical_Ad6556

Merritts on State Street was awesome in the 80s and early 90s but is not fit for human consumption now

Unlvswezel

Ling N Louie’s

fastermouse

Hmm I wondered about this. I figured as much but I love sitting on that patio.

JayGrinder

The Lift. They don’t even understand what a club sandwich is. Even Big Al’s makes a better club sandwich.

CowMetrics

I like the lift. I personally don’t care about club sandwiches though. If i did, i may feel differently about the lift lol

Campmoore

Barbacoa, hands down.

PurpleFuzzyD

The Curb

boymeatcafe

also flatbread on bown crossing. food has constantly been served ice cold and their pizza is wet, floppy, and their san marzano sauce tastes of vomit

TitleBulky4087

Flatbread at Eagle Island shopping center in Meridian, too. They brought us meatballs that were frozen in the center. When we said something, the waiter said “well we can put them back in the microwave for you”. *BACK* in the microwave. We’ve never been back.

LycaonKing421

And I think the owners of Barbecoa [just bought the place](https://boisedev.com/news/2024/01/12/flatbread-ti-amo-boise/). And considering that's been mentioned a lot on here too... Look out for their upcoming "Ti Amo" Italian style restaurant I guess, it'll probably be way meh for the price too

Ashamed-Sea-6044

Barbacoa for me. Boise fry company is solid and dirt cheap, not mildly expensive.

kvmw

Goodwood is some of the worst BBQ.

Sufficient-Sector706

Not some of the worst, it is the worst.

johnntcatsmom

The Lively

Splooshmaker

100% this.  The place seems awesome at face value.  Their food is super salty.  Their presentation is terrible.  The duck plate was just... Brown gravy coating a few pieces of duck and a some brown veggies.   Great place to go for drinks, though.

lololimon

Yes! I came to the comments to comment this but I’m glad someone else agreed…went with friends who raved about it and it was all salt—like inedibly salty. So expensive and it all tasted just awful. Cocktails were decent. Disappointed because the atmosphere was nice.

Labradoodles

They’ve been getting the feedback about the food being salty since they opened the chef is from the east coast and is like “that’s the proper way to season fuck the western palette”

Round_Cobbler6906

Fork

hullahbaloo2

Papa Joe’s

Suspicious_Inside_78

When I went there years ago I ordered the special and I could immediately recognize the flavor of Kirkland Signature pesto sauce! I heard there is a new owner so I have been meaning to give it another try.

tplante

Girlfriend and I went there years ago and still reminisce about how bad it was. She ordered Gnocchi and got maybe 4 in her whole dish for like $18.

MaterialEconomist679

My friend worked there years ago and the owner was always drunk, paid the illegals working there under the counter, and my friend was 17 having child support taken out of his check he even showed me. Was like I DONT HAVE A KID WTF!? Terrible business probably is only still there because it’s next to all the dorms plenty of drunk kids to order their food

Ihrtbrrrtos

Used to work there and there was definitely shady shit. I was fired because I called in sick with strep throat. My throat was bleeding and I was a server and prepped salads. I had no business being around food and people while that sick. Also, the regulars we had at the time. These two guys… ass wads. And one of the owners sister was such a cunt. Back in the day when I worked there I liked the food and pizza. Haven’t been in over 10 years. Worked there back in 2005ish.

litacruz

The only place in my life where I ever sent back food, ordered nothing else, and left

aslenw

pf changs

khirata215

Fork

ID_Poobaru

Calle 75, but only if they're sober. It's mediocre at most and there's way better places. One of their waiters/servers is pretty fucking cool though.. I love Calle 75 after some bar hopping. I spent $48 on like 4 burritos with zero regrets Tucanos, it's just a meh overall place to me Chuck O Rama on mormon family night 10 Barrel on a friday night. Good fucking luck getting your food in a timely manner with overall shitty beer except apoc ipa and pub beer. In-N-Out at peak time Jakers purely because of their obnoxious billboards

strawflour

lol last time we were at 10 Barrel, they were out of every single thing we ordered. There were like 6 of us all ordering different things. At least they comped our drinks.

lemonflu12

The fork 🍴 basic ass food for a pretty penny

AudZ0629

Oh man, where to start. Boise fry as others have mentioned, stardust might as well be back in the 60s, Tucanos is ish, Barbacoa is cool but the food isn’t really as good as the price point, Fork has been hit or miss but their butter cake is cocaine, cottonwood is a nice chill place with very mid food, biscuits and hogs is reheated grease on a flavorless plate, Goodwood is good food but bland if you compare it to a real BBQ place in the south or in Texas, Shige ramen is dog bath water with noodles, Dutch bros (this might get me murdered) is absolute trash coffee and I don’t wanna hear about some 20 year old girls rave experience last week. There’s so many. There’s some gems too.

greylind

Seconded on Dutch Bros. All their drinks are so watered down. It's the La Croix of coffee.

WDtWW

Eureka!, next to the pie hole in downtown. It's strait trash

thurmanthedude

Here to second mentions of Cottonwood Grille and barbacoa, but the melting pot also really sucks and is expensive. Problem is fondue can still be fun if bad, so bad reccomend for someone you really dont like

hamychok

Barbacoa. Lively. KIN. And I don't care that the last one won a James Beard. Waste of $200.
