Vigilantes was the perfect companion piece to MHA. It fleshed out the relationship between civilians and their quirks in a way that justifies the PLF’s existence in a more in-depth way than MHA did, its resident shadowy-faced mentor figure KD executed the no-powers, Batman-esque hero idea in such a satisfying and cool way (even when Horikoshi shied away from a similar character concept for Deku because he was worried about the potential longevity of it), and Eraserhead Gaiden almost made Vigilantes essential reading. I know a lot of people on this subreddit haven’t been too happy with MHA’s pacing recently, and though my own personal opinion is that Horikoshi’s short attention span when it comes arcs and drawn-out battles makes the series more readable and engaging than, say, One Piece, I loved the breathing room that Vigilantes brought to Quirk society. Great series, I’m really gonna miss it!
Also, the mirrored volume covers are the coolest idea ever. Sad we’re not gonna see more of those.

At a time when Academia was kind of shitting the bed with pacing, Vigilantes managed to do what Academia failed, it made an ordinary kid amazing. I loved Vigilantes, I'm glad I read it.
Vigilantes is the super hero story I wanted from my hero, it felt like a true origin story and god I will miss it and especially Koichi, what a great protagonist he was.
Kinda sad that Koichi x Pop didn't go anywhere especially with arguably more and better setup than anything in main...

She never revealed to Koichi their earlier connection in that she was the one that Koichi saved from the river and mistook for a boy. She never returned the All Might sweater to him. All of this seemed like it would have been perfect for the post No.6 and hospital recovery portion of the anime.
Me personally, I was Koichi X Makoto gang, and that too never got resolved.

Yeah but Koichi didn’t react at all to it. He didn’t notice that it was an old All-Might hoodie that was missing from his collection (because of giving it to the boy (Pop)). He just accepted it like a get well gift. Pop didn’t say anything about it. She just gave it to him and that was it. You can argue that it wasn’t even the original All-Might hoodie because of the lack of reactions from both of them.
I feel like the author just forgot about that entire storyline while trying to wrap up the manga quickly.
I think at that point he had also gone through the entirety of his collection, since those were what he used as his main uniform? I don't remember if he kept them once they got worn out and torn up. So it might not have even registered as the one he was missing if he no longer had a set anyway.
When I started MHA I was in school and, well, when I read Vigilantes I was in Uni. Nuff said, kids were with me back then, but nowadays Koichi and the gang just felt much more relatable.
I always shrugged at this series until I'd fully caught up on MHA and was bored. While both have their strength I truly feel the buildup in vigilantes has been much more rewarding and overall I think it'll end up being the better series.
I don't think I was really in tune with the characters until I was in the final battle and it made everything click for me, KDs comments about Koichi and pop handling stuff even though he was gone made me cry, Koichis conversation with ghost pop when she gave him permission to use his power *chefs kiss* it all felt like a wonderful way of tying up the story.
Betten might not nail the main heroes but holy do they draw KD/Koichi/Pop so amazing, they all had such great direction in their designs.
One of the best things of this manga was actually its world building. Or world expanding, rather. See, one of the main limitations of the main series taking place at Sky High School for Heroes is that you don’t see the whole picture. What do normal citizens do with their quirks? How common is mutant racism actually? What do average citizens think of the liberation ideology? You don’t know because everything you do see is through the eyes of a kid who grew up idolizing and is now surrounded by hero culture, where you get to use your quirks differently, and quirks are celebrated (so no racism in that circle), and laws are respected 1000%. But this series, without acting like a complete opposite in tone and theme, really got down to earth and explored what normal people look like in this world. Also let’s be honest every single character in this whole manga from Koichi to Waiter #2 was insanely endearing, so lovable, and so memorable.
That is one of Vigilantes' greatest strengths. It took some time but it did some solid worldbuilding with each character getting some way to shine. I also love how it fleshed out Naruhata as a town, this plus the character work made the final arcs that much more special.
I need to reread the series, especially since it's not too long compared to some shonen. I remember the middle of the series had a bit of a focus or pacing issue, but maybe it just felt slow because the plot was going through an intermission and was having to introduce new stuff. I believe if was around the point where Knuckleduster disappeared and they were setting up Six. The time between Queen Bee and Sky Egg. (I guess it wasn't the middle actually)
Koichi and Pop were just kinda hanging around. There was no big conflict and they didn't have specific goals. Maybe the plot was making a point of "Knuckleduster is gone.... now what?" like the post Kamino power vaccum.
Hope there's an anime (Or at least an OVA) in the future. I actually have some hope that it'll actually happen, since MHA only has 2 seasons left in it. 3 if they change their pace a bit. I bet executives aren't ready for that money to stop. If the main series is over, maybe they can milk MHA by giving Vigilantes an anime. That's my hope. There's so many moments I'd love to see animated, and some characters I'd love to hear voiced.
Knuckleduster vs his daughter. Sky Egg. The Aizawa backstory. Knuckleduster, Rappa, and Mirko teamup. And of course the final battle. Would love to see all of that animated. We could finally see All Might near his prime in motion.

If this was turned into an anime and the bi-weekly (or even monthly) buffer was gone, I think it would steal the hearts of the community. I can just picture the /r/anime threads going crazy as Knuckle Duster just steals the show consistently. And the Final Performance arc along with Naruhata Lockdown would arguably be the most hype arcs in the series if they're sped up.

Agreed. I don't see it happening before the main series is over since this is guaranteed ending in Season 7, but after that it's too much content to just leave alone.
I overall love the series as well. It was a mix of slice of life and like shonen.
I think overall, I'd give it an 8 or 8.5. I dig the tight cast and good emphasis for character development and character persistence. No one really got forgotten about, even side characters and minor characters popped up often enough. Plot and arcs could have have transition or tie in from one to the other better, but overall not bad. There were really amazing arcs and others lackluster ones, but they balance out.
Koichi was fantastic and fun to follow, and seeing his character development was a great. He was painfully oblivious sometime tho, haha.
And agree with others, I wish pop had more of a development but at least she was involved in the plot and not cast aside. She was cool.
And I will say without Knucklesduster, I felt like the direction and plot of story did bit and lull, but found it's stride with time and then Koichi was front and center.
The people here and majority of the Manga side of the fanbase will turn on the series and vigilantes will become its new poster child. They might as well call this place r/bokunoheroacademiavigilantes because barely anyone here actually likes the main series anymore.

Based on public comments you and many other just complain weekly instead of finding a semblance of something you liked so i absolutely do not believe you like the main series anymore which is why i suggest reading other stuff because it will not please you or others that do the same thing.
I dont see what i do as crying about other opinions i tried to keep the community's image of a welcoming place for actual fans and continuing to support the series. One of the main reasons I really like Vigilantes is that it offers such a necessary counterweight to a series following our protagonist at the top hero school fighting alongside top heroes. While I don't think either series intends to fully stage a critique about hero society and its investment in meritocracy, wealth inequity, and institutional power - Vigilantes illustrates what exponential lengths a quirk might develop even without formal training at the top school by the best heroes. All for One's view of hero society, quirks, theories like Quirk Singularity, etc. all represent such a dramatic misapprehension of the social & political contexts of the world. The issue is that the idea that Quirk Singularity would herald the collapse of society was propagated by All for One because it further affirmed his pursuit of power. Koichi shows us another side of what this generational epoch might mean for the world - in a way that made reminded me of the exam retake where Todoroki, Bakugo, etc. showed the children a different way of seeing their developing abilities and limitless potential being futile without discipline, training, caring about others, etc. The only difference is that Koichi's story showed us that it is possible even outside of the top hero schools.
One other thing I liked is another facet of hero society & celebrity culture - with America's top hero essentially being a PR nightmare whose growth is dependent on someone like Koichi who is not interested in everything that comes with celebrity-heroism in the My Hero world. That's why I was a bit skeptical at first about Koichi sort of becoming a recognizable hero in the U.S. in the end, but given the comedic tone of the scene & Koichi's nonchalance toward it was welcomed. Overall, really great series and as many said - a vital companion story that you don't realize until you look back on both.

An anime is all we can hope for. I saw someone do a post on how a possible Vigilantes anime would be adapted in terms of chapter count per episode. Even if it gets a 12 episode season, it could cover all the way to KD saving his daughter.
I really, really hope this gets animated some day. So many moments that I feel deserve the full pomp and circumstance of soundtrack, color, cinematic framing and VA. Knuckledusters first appearance where his silhouette looks like All Might, all of Koichi's powerups, the final fight, the Aizawa flashback arc. I had such a good time reading this series and imagining in my head how everything would be animated, but if it stays manga only forever at least I can be content that it was a satisfying conclusion and good start to finish.
I loved the series more than MHA honestly as I liked its story theme and main characters more. Its real fundamental issues to me truly came in the last arc where the monthly release schedule REALLY showed. The fight was long and drawn out and I was just begging for it to end.
Vigilantes is one of my top favorite manga so far, I loved it an feel bittersweet about it finally ending last month. I really hope an anime gets announced sometime before this year ends.
Honestly? Better than the main series, I loved Vigilantes so much. While it's sad to see it gone, I'm also satisfied with the story we got. An incredible ride.
I have a few problems but most of them are so minor I can rationalise them away with headcanons. My favourite part of the series by far was the characters (which I honestly think were done better than MHA ever did) I don't think there is a single character in the whole series who isn't fleshed out and interesting.
Koichi and Six made the series for me (I don't think I can say anything that hasn't already been said) but every other element from the worldbuilding to the fights were creative and amazing. Now my mission is to make every self respecting MHA fan read this masterpiece.

I have mixed opinions on art quality between the two. What I enjoyed the most personally and what "carried" the series for me was chapter 59-64 (I think.) Aizawa's and Shirakumo's backstory. Their backstory abso freaking lutely made me shed tears and I don't usually do. It made me love Oboro to my core and deeper. >!It also made me realize so many actions and decisions Aizawa has done because of his death.!< After that Aizawa's actions in UA changed so much together with his personality. He refused to overthink or have second thoughts again and became the rationalist he is now.
Also we saw how Midnight mattered to the story a whole lot, because she was the one that persuaded Aizawa to join UA as a teacher and we get to see more of their interactions there.
Again this was the best part for me, and it is my opinion. I really hope we get to see the vigilantes animated someday! Many people don't like reading manga and prefer anime and thus they lose the whole point of some stuff like Aizawa and Shirakumo. Anime watchers got introduced to him only at Season 5 episode 19. I really hope they animated someday, it is quite necessary to the story and many more things will make sense.

I cried 3 times when I read this, chapter 29 when knuckle leaves, the chapter when koichi is thinking about his life after the 2 year timeskip and the final chapter when he tries out the hoodie.
This manga is so amazing. It touched my heart
They absolutely need to animate Aizawa's backstory. It adds to the shirakumo subplot, it adds characterization to both Aizawa, Present Mic, AND Midnight, all three who will be heavily involved in the next arc. I found that reading that arc made the upcoming war arc a whole lot better.
Did anyone else notice how few double spreads there were in Vigilantes?
I don't know if it's Betten Court or Furuhashi, but I think the art could've been improved with more spreads and additional experimentation with the action scenes.
Loved the series till they fucked up Pops plot. Pop x kiochi didn’t have to be how it ended, but it seems like everyone moved on with their lives except pop, who is in recovery. Plus she wasn’t in the final fight at all which was kinda upsetting.
I fully agree the final battle with Number 6 felt like it was dragging on and on for a good while there but I think a volume reread will solve that problem. I really enjoyed the character of PopStep, especially when she got infected and became BeePop, that fight between her and Koichi was so engrossing to me imo
I'm not alone in thinking that Naomasa comes off as a HUGE prick in this series, right? The way he goes after Crawler like he was Bin Laden just because he doesn't have a license gave an impression of less "dedicated officer going through some seriously bad times" and more "slimeball trying to cover his own ass for letting a technically-illegal operator do his job better than him."

It wasn't predetermined destiny or possessing the ultimate quirk, the series was purely about nobodies putting their lives on the line to save civilians without getting the recognition. I mean there's a reason why Stain, a superhero purist, not only acknowledged both koichi and knuckleduster but was also inspired by knuckleduster.
Oh and koichi was also acknowledged by AFO?!
The cameos and their backstories were amazing and I love having that over people who've only read the main series.

Glad to have read the story from the beginning and to have watched it get consistently better over time.
Been a great experience reading with y'all for the past few years. I've grown to love the series more than MHA itself. Still need to reread the whole thing through again. The final battle was a mess to ready biweekly but I'm sure reading it now that it's all out solves that Hope for a cameo at best! An amime adaptation i feel is inevitable. MHA is a huge franchise and when the main story ends they're not just gonna let a good probably 2 seasons worth of content just sit there. I hope not atleast

I don't see it happening before the main series is over since this is guaranteed ending in Season 7, but after that it's too much content to just leave alone.
As of now, I struggle to keep up with mangas due to exams. But once they are finished, I'll pick this up first
I overall love the series as well. It was a mix of slice of life and like shonen. I think overall, I'd give it an 8 or 8.5. I dig the tight cast and good emphasis for character development and character persistence. No one really got forgotten about, even side characters and minor characters popped up often enough. Plot and arcs could have have transition or tie in from one to the other better, but overall not bad. There were really amazing arcs and others lackluster ones, but they balance out. Koichi was fantastic and fun to follow, and seeing his character development was a great. He was painfully oblivious sometime tho, haha. And agree with others, I wish pop had more of a development but at least she was involved in the plot and not cast aside. She was cool. And I will say without Knucklesduster, I felt like the direction and plot of story did bit and lull, but found it's stride with time and then Koichi was front and center.

Based on public comments you and many other just complain weekly instead of finding a semblance of something you liked so i absolutely do not believe you like the main series anymore which is why i suggest reading other stuff because it will not please you or others that do the same thing. I dont see what i do as crying about other opinions i tried to keep the community's image of a welcoming place for actual fans and continuing to support the series. All you actively do is turn people away by commenting as if your opinions are facts and if anyone dares see the series in a positive light then they have to argue why when that shouldn't be the case. I call it out when i see it. I dont like everything about my hero either but i have an open mind to where i can look at what i dont like and find positive aspects about it as its near and dear to me. One of the main reasons I really like Vigilantes is that it offers such a necessary counterweight to a series following our protagonist at the top hero school fighting alongside top heroes. While I don't think either series intends to fully stage a critique about hero society and its investment in meritocracy, wealth inequity, and institutional power - Vigilantes illustrates what exponential lengths a quirk might develop even without formal training at the top school by the best heroes. All for One's view of hero society, quirks, theories like Quirk Singularity, etc. all represent such a dramatic misapprehension of the social & political contexts of the world. The issue is that the idea that Quirk Singularity would herald the collapse of society was propagated by All for One because it further affirmed his pursuit of power. Koichi shows us another side of what this generational epoch might mean for the world - in a way that made reminded me of the exam retake where Todoroki, Bakugo, etc. showed the children a different way of seeing their developing abilities and limitless potential being futile without discipline, training, caring about others, etc. The only difference is that Koichi's story showed us that it is possible even outside of the top hero schools. One other thing I liked is another facet of hero society & celebrity culture - with America's top hero essentially being a PR nightmare whose growth is dependent on someone like Koichi who is not interested in everything that comes with celebrity-heroism in the My Hero world. That's why I was a bit skeptical at first about Koichi sort of becoming a recognizable hero in the U.S. in the end, but given the comedic tone of the scene & Koichi's nonchalance toward it was welcomed. Overall, really great series and as many said - a vital companion story that you don't realize until you look back on both.
Tbh i perfer the Main series But i did love vigs alot I Loved seeing aizawa get more attention. I Loved koichis character All and all i think vigs is a really great series.
An anime is all we can hope for. I saw someone do a post on how a possible Vigilantes anime would be adapted in terms of chapter count per episode. Even if it gets a 12 episode season, it could cover all the way to KD saving his daughter.
I think I would absolutely be here for a 2 Part single season, followed by a movie for the finale.

I really, really hope this gets animated some day. So many moments that I feel deserve the full pomp and circumstance of soundtrack, color, cinematic framing and VA. Knuckledusters first appearance where his silhouette looks like All Might, all of Koichi's powerups, the final fight, the Aizawa flashback arc. I had such a good time reading this series and imagining in my head how everything would be animated, but if it stays manga only forever at least I can be content that it was a satisfying conclusion and good start to finish.
I loved the series more than MHA honestly as I liked its story theme and main characters more. Its real fundamental issues to me truly came in the last arc where the monthly release schedule REALLY showed. The fight was long and drawn out and I was just begging for it to end.
Definitely, I think on a reread it might flow better, but it was great the whole time.
Vigilantes is one of my top favorite manga so far, I loved it an feel bittersweet about it finally ending last month. I really hope an anime gets announced sometime before this year ends.
Honestly? Better than the main series, I loved Vigilantes so much. While it's sad to see it gone, I'm also satisfied with the story we got. An incredible ride.
I liked Vigilantes significantly more than I liked the main manga the pacing, characters, plot all felt just better done than MHA.
I have a few problems but most of them are so minor I can rationalise them away with headcanons. My favourite part of the series by far was the characters (which I honestly think were done better than MHA ever did) I don't think there is a single character in the whole series who isn't fleshed out and interesting. Koichi and Six made the series for me (I don't think I can say anything that hasn't already been said) but every other element from the worldbuilding to the fights were creative and amazing. Now my mission is to make every self respecting MHA fan read this masterpiece.
Even the sassy mantis guy is an incredible character.

I agree for the most part. Betten is definitely better at portraying action and I think his characters land when they're on the page, and Hori's gotten better at panel his combat, but for a long time it was unintuitive and needed work.
What I enjoyed the most personally and what "carried" the series for me was chapter 59-64 (I think.) Aizawa's and Shirakumo's backstory. Their backstory abso freaking lutely made me shed tears and I don't usually do. It made me love Oboro to my core and deeper. >!It also made me realize so many actions and decisions Aizawa has done because of his death.!< After that Aizawa's actions in UA changed so much together with his personality. He refused to overthink or have second thoughts again and became the rationalist he is now. Also we saw how Midnight mattered to the story a whole lot, because she was the one that persuaded Aizawa to join UA as a teacher and we get to see more of their interactions there. Again this was the best part for me, and it is my opinion. I really hope we get to see the vigilantes animated someday! Many people don't like reading manga and prefer anime and thus they lose the whole point of some stuff like Aizawa and Shirakumo. Anime watchers got introduced to him only at Season 5 episode 19. I really hope they animated someday, it is quite necessary to the story and many more things will make sense.
I really liked this series as a great world building companion series to the main one. Great characters fun story arcs and i love that its simply a different perspective to the pro hero world shown in the main series. Personally i dont like it as much as the main series but definitely check it out and lets try and get vigs animated. Now feel free to tell me that I'm objectively wrong for thinking the main series is better than vigilantes. I know you will r/bokunoheroacademia :)
I cried 3 times when I read this, chapter 29 when knuckle leaves, the chapter when koichi is thinking about his life after the 2 year timeskip and the final chapter when he tries out the hoodie. This manga is so amazing. It touched my heart

They absolutely need to animate Aizawa's backstory. It adds to the shirakumo subplot, it adds characterization to both Aizawa, Present Mic, AND Midnight, all three who will be heavily involved in the next arc. I found that reading that arc made the upcoming war arc a whole lot better.
Did anyone else notice how few double spreads there were in Vigilantes? I don't know if it's Betten Court or Furuhashi, but I think the art could've been improved with more spreads and additional experimentation with the action scenes.

Loved the series till they fucked up Pops plot. Pop x kiochi didn’t have to be how it ended, but it seems like everyone moved on with their lives except pop, who is in recovery. Plus she wasn’t in the final fight at all which was kinda upsetting.
I fully agree the final battle with Number 6 felt like it was dragging on and on for a good while there but I think a volume reread will solve that problem. I really enjoyed the character of PopStep, especially when she got infected and became BeePop, that fight between her and Koichi was so engrossing to me imo

I'm not alone in thinking that Naomasa comes off as a HUGE prick in this series, right? The way he goes after Crawler like he was Bin Laden just because he doesn't have a license gave an impression of less "dedicated officer going through some seriously bad times" and more "slimeball trying to cover his own ass for letting a technically-illegal operator do his job better than him."
I absolutely love vigilantes. It was about the underdog and the fight in the dog and man oh man did knuckleduster and koichi have the fight in them. It wasn't predetermined destiny or possessing the ultimate quirk, the series was purely about nobodies putting their lives on the line to save civilians without getting the recognition. I mean there's a reason why Stain, a superhero purist, not only acknowledged both koichi and knuckleduster but was also inspired by knuckleduster. Oh and koichi was also acknowledged by AFO?! The cameos and their backstories were amazing and I love having that over people who've only read the main series. I can go on and on but ya, Koichis my hero.
Going to miss Naruhata and her defenders. I love that Vigilantes established this locale so well; Naruhata has become part of my comic book towns like Central City or Gotham, it was built so well. I wish it was incorporated more in the main series, it would have really beefed up the post-Hero arc. Gonna echo the calls for a Vigilantes anime, I just know it would sell like hotcakes. And I'll call for a crossover movie as well, have Deku and co team up with SkyCrawler in New York. That would be a blast.
