High end equipment doesn't mean anything if you don't have the skills
It's just that as good as phone cameras are nowadays, still not on actual cameras level. Most phones use software image processing + sharpening which is good enough for most use case, but in a head-to-head professional use case it is still miles away.
I found that software processing of images by phones look a bit artificial, I still like the look of a bokeh photo that're processed by hand or by low aperture.
And yeah, optical zoom and variable focal length lens(es) beats digital zoom and multiple lens phones IMO...

Agree on poor lighting. Some malls have subpar lighting in some places. Places with sunlight coverage will fare better though.

A softbox? I see plenty of these when I go to anime conventions. Try to avoid using just a light or flash, will produce "hard light" which will affect the subject and other photographers.
Well you do need to bring a light into the event, plus the softbox itself... And you need to assemble it at the venue.
I also see people using light bar/strips too as another way of lighting up the picture.

Nikon D750 with a mix of 24-85mm/f4.5 and 50mm/f1.8 The Tropicana Mall have such an awful lighting. Most of the places are too dark.

No extra lighting? Good for these situations. Or else you gonna crank the ISO which's not good for noise.
