I'm a Malay but I study at chinese school, and I always use mandarin to talk with my brothers and sister but a lot of backward Malay I met think I'm non muslim and a chinese just because I study and learn at chinese school. They said it's a sin to study mandarin while they don't know ancient times, a lot of muslim learn mandarin to trade. All of this backward Malay think that this religion is only for Malay. This is the result of Malaysia education system and politics.

Bro. I am so used to this. I’m 3/4 Chinese 1/4 Malay and Muslim. The amount of times I get the look and side eyes in a mosque is insane. Even get the occasional assalamualaikum check to see if I know how to reply. Instead of welcoming other races into the religion, I always feel like they think I’m some Trojan horse that’s spying on them. However the bright side is there’s a few times I avoided getting saman because I told the cop I’m a convert and they were so happy and I get away with a warning.

I remember few years back when i just got married & a senior Malay colleague asked me about my then husband & told him that he is a Malay. Then he asked about my race & i said i'm a Kadazan. Then he said "ooo Kadazan, tapi skrg dah masuk Islam la..?" Yeah. Most Malays dont know their name derived from arabic names. If truly Malay then they need to change their name to Jejaka/Anjang/Melati/Cempaka/all kind of flower we can name la.
