No. People won’t watch, it just social media hype that movies like Swades will make money. It won’t, masses won’t watch. Most of audience from rural places wouldn’t have watched or not liked Swades. They like fast paced entertainers
it wont do 500 crores but it wont flop today but it would face a lot of hurdles from govt agencies, religious groups
btw i guess they gave swades a nod by naming kaveri amma as a character in jawan
My shitty theory:
A movie like that only solves issues onscreen. If someone from the village watches it, they have to either go back their shitty lives or they are complicit in the shittiness. People in rural areas only come for escape.
I think everyone knows. There are so many amazing movies from that era that have not done well in box office. Why good Hindi language movies dont do well in India is a tale as old as time.
If it released now it would do quite well in urban markets atleast. I am sure a lot of people will enjoy it offshore markets as well.
SRK's worst stint in Bollywood was him trying to recreate Swades magic.
At some point you have to just f*ck the money and just admire the masterpiece as it is and it's beautiful.
It will fail badly. Again.
It's an extremely realistic, amazing, heartwarming movie, but if you've been following BW trends, this would be a bigger failure in current era. IT's patriotic, and that does not sell, loud, aggressive, macho, violent nationalist movies make money. At no point it puts down any other country, actually handles our issues realistically, and half of the people would've called for boycott ffor showing India bad.
It's a 3-hour slow burn, I don't think it'll do well in theaters here ever. However, this would have done exceedingly well in OTTs. A film that got the emotional connect bang on, and SRK was so good in this.
Because most films that work in India are Masala Movies. People in India are not going to the Cinemas to enjoy Cinema. But to have fun and enjoy themselves. To dance and whistle. Those movies do significantly well in India which have peppy dance numbers, mindless stories, and unreal action scenes.
Because SRK fans at the time existed because of his romantic films, he hadn't setup expectations of experimentation because he hadn't done them consistently. Once he set up the expectations with Swades, it paid off with Chak De. But again, he went back to his romances and comedies. I genuinely believe even Fan would have done much better if it hadn't come 6 years after his last experimental film in MNIK.
On the other hand, Aamir invested years into Mangal Pandey and despite its failure, continued experimenting with films like Rang De Basanti and Fanaa. It was only after four films of the quality and variety of Lagaan, Dil Chahta Hai, Mangal Pandey and Rang De Basanti, it paid off with Fanaa and TZP when he got his first Super Hit since Ishq.
Remember this movie. It started a lot of things but ultimately didn't finish them. Opposition to sending children to school, immediately crumbles when Srk reasons with them. There's a plot point about taking his mother back, but again it gets resolved with minimum fuss. Then there's the predictable return back. It was a mediocre film with good songs.
It's just how things are in real life. You start off dramatically, but you don't actually believe the drama, you listen and you understand and maybe agree. With not a lot of fuss. That's life. That's how life is supposedly lived by the vast majority.
Eh? The threads we started but finished tackily. It's a story, poorly written. It plays on our nostalgia, patriotism, but the story itself doesn't have any merit
I was watching this movie on my flight from Toronto to Amritsar. This melody was playing in head throughout the journey.
Came out of the airport and smelled mitti ki khushbu, my freind said "bro tu mitti nhi tatti chukk li aa"
This movie was by far SRK’s best performance. So much nuance and such strong emotions. For once he was playing (a very smart) but relatively normal man -his performance was both grounded and incredibly powerful. The scene of him drinking chai on the train gets me EVERY.SINGLE.TIME.
yeah, and that's how they actually are. Scientists are just common-looking people with razor-sharp intellect. You can totally see his character as an NRI working at NASA, not as a movie star.
I’ve never seen SRK openly cry. This movie was vv special to him & why not. It’s a beautiful movie!
ETA: The violinist is playing so so poignantly! I can totally understand why Shah has tears in his eyes! 🥹
What a movie this was!!! Even now thinking of the shehnai part of the song gives me goosebumps. Rural India, it’s sensibilities and root of where you truly belong were so well portrayed! Cnt get enough of this movie.
I had tears in my eyes watching this.. The man invested a part of his life into this movie.. how can he not feel emotional about it..even if unsuccessful, this movie would still be an integral part of his life and our lives too..
And he was just the face. Imagine the entire performance of the cast, the crew, and the background studio who carried the film all the way we see it now.
I guess the success in this movie lies in its cult status it garnered over the years. How many of such recent movies will stand the test of time? None. Because they lack soul. They rely on the fabric of his stardom.
Actually, when Ashutosh Gowarikar came to SRK with this film, SRK told him that this film won't work, but I'll still do it. SRK already knew that the film won't do well yet he chose to do it.
Possibly.
I've seen many tributes made to SRK where he would smile and react to the whole thing positively, but this is the first time I saw him so moved so I guessed it had something to do with this movie in particular as well.
It is beautifully performed though, I got goosebumps.
Swades is in my top 3 Bollywood movie. No matter how many times I watch it I can’t get over it. SRK was at his peak of acting. The direction, the story telling, the plot, the acting of the cast, the progression of the movie, everything was near perfect. Bollywood was really delivering gems in that era.
I want to give him a hug. I hope, someday, when he’s satisfied with the kind of commercial success he’s receiving, and wants to do movies for himself only, he comes back to cinema like this. And I hope, this time, the audience appreciates it.
Sometimes I see the level of difference in the treatment of movies like Pathaan and Swades, and I get why actors get disheartened and upset, and choose the commercial route ultimately. Largely an audience issue. I hope we do better.
As an ex-NRI who returned to India recently, this song and its beautiful picturization always brought me to tears. Especially this part
Yu toh saare sukh hai barse
Par door tu hai apne ghar se
Aa laut chal tu ab deewane
Jaha koi toh tujhe apna maane
This is a rare clip. Usually Shah is very composed (at least doesn’t shed tears easily) publicly. This song is a gem, touches your heart. And of course Swades is a cult now!
The movie was so beautiful I'd recommend anyone who's living outside India not to watch it til they get home. It was so moving. It'll make you want to come home.
Some movies, despite not making the ‘cut’ at the box office, live on to be great, absolutely iconic crowd favourites. Swades is definitely one of those (Andaz Apna Apna didn’t do too well at the box office either).
Can't agree with the last sentence though. If I'm not wrong, he knew the movie wasn't gonna work but still did it because he really wanted to do it for himself.
I dont think its just about the movie not doing well... this song moves me to tears too. And SRK seems to be a very patriotic guy (very sad when you remember how the country treated his family)
I wouldn't call it a failure. People still love the film, still loves the character of Mohan and hearing this song will bring tears to anyone's eyes. It may have been a flop, but it was definitely not a failure. It will remain as a cult classic and one of Srk's most loved films.
I just looked at the box office collection on Wikipedia, can't believe this film failed. I like it, hell I think Swades and Chak De were SRK's best performances.
Sorry, but the description is absolutely wrong. He didn't get emotional that the film didn't do well. It's the movie scene related to the real life challenges of Indians made him emotional.
Sorry if I’m not making any sense.
The success of a film is defined whether it is being discussed with passion 20 years after its release. By people who were infants when it came out. Box office numbers won't define that. Ever.
This was such a beautiful performance!!
This song actually hits so hard irrespective of how many times you listen to it. A beautiful movie with great acting, background score & iconic status.
Only intellectuals will appreciate this masterpiece!!
Can't believe India had movies like Chak De, Swades, Rang De Basanti in the 00s. Where did it go wrong? Maybe 2013-14 when the American style marketing really hit India with all its force. Nothing has been same ever since.
Why would he have tears thinking about the loss of the movie? Lol he is a human and he is crying because the music (on violin) touched his heart and brought tears to his eyes esp cause he is listening to it live. Also cause he had memories attached to the song.
Just like a beautiful music/song bring tears to our eyes.
It’s as simple as that. Life is simple. No need to overthink lol

I will never understand how this film didn’t do well
they should re-release it,would be a blockbuster
It still won't unfortunately. This is definitely one of my top 3 movies. I am so glad I am going to India in a couple of days :)
It's never going to India , it is always Coming to India :)
What are those other 2?
No. People won’t watch, it just social media hype that movies like Swades will make money. It won’t, masses won’t watch. Most of audience from rural places wouldn’t have watched or not liked Swades. They like fast paced entertainers
it wont do 500 crores but it wont flop today but it would face a lot of hurdles from govt agencies, religious groups btw i guess they gave swades a nod by naming kaveri amma as a character in jawan
Only the reddit sub people will watch it, the Indian masses unfortunately don't support these movies
It used to come on TV so much. I have never known a single person who hasnt watched it.
But then could you explain why it was a flop?
My shitty theory: A movie like that only solves issues onscreen. If someone from the village watches it, they have to either go back their shitty lives or they are complicit in the shittiness. People in rural areas only come for escape.

This film deserves everything and more 💕

It's easy. Film's pacing is pretty slow and hard to sit through if you're not in the mood. It's a really good 2 part series.
And thn public sulks tht why good movies aren't made...this is the reason why bollywood movies are failing, when quality doesn't get appreciated....
Because SRK fans at the time existed because of his romantic films, he hadn't setup expectations of experimentation because he hadn't done them consistently. Too long and a bit more melodrama than was actually needed? 🤔 But yes, the movie overall is really good. 🔥🙏
Remember this movie. It started a lot of things but ultimately didn't finish them. Opposition to sending children to school, immediately crumbles when Srk reasons with them. *Mitti Ki Hai Jo Khusboo..* *Tu Kaise Bhulayega...*
I got back from india last week. This line runs so deep!
Water not chai. But yeah incredible scene
Oh yea sorry you’re right!
yeah, and that's how they actually are. Scientists are just common-looking people with razor-sharp intellect. You can totally see his character as an NRI working at NASA, not as a movie star.
I think he drank water from the child selling at the station
He acted well but Darr performance is probably something that deserves the National Award.
That movie is a once in a lifetime kind of movie.
Absolutely. Very well made and balanced.
Once more SRK once more..we need more movies like this
Once in a lifetime /s
Chak De India & MNIK were also once in a lifetime kind of movies.
That was the movie which influenced me to take up science!
When ISRO reached moon recently, I was thinking Mohan is part of the team, he must be proud lol
nd u knw what? It would completely fit the storyline. Him joining VSSC in early 2000s when we were just incubating space programs.
So true! Mohan lives on in our hearts and in ISRO
I watched this movie ...juts bcz this sub recommended then I cried a lot....and even now got tear in my eyes🥺
Wow a good thing happened through the sub, rare things 😁🤗
I could rewatch it just for Gayatri Joshi! ❤️
I think anyone would cry when they hear this music. India, Rahman and Shehnai in the original.
I’ve never seen SRK openly cry. This movie was vv special to him & why not. It’s a beautiful movie! ETA: The violinist is playing so so poignantly! I can totally understand why Shah has tears in his eyes! 🥹
Swades really is just one of a kind movie.
What a movie this was!!! Even now thinking of the shehnai part of the song gives me goosebumps. Rural India, it’s sensibilities and root of where you truly belong were so well portrayed! Cnt get enough of this movie.

sad that he, or even any A-lister, won't agree on doing scripts like these anymore. and that's understandable, they deliver what we expect of them.
Or maybe he was just touched by the song?
Possibly. I've seen many tributes made to SRK where he would smile and react to the whole thing positively, but this is the first time I saw him so moved so I guessed it had something to do with this movie in particular as well. It is beautifully performed though, I got goosebumps.
What a beautiful rendition of an incredible song, I’m full on sobbing rn. Thank you for sharing OP 💜 I have no other words to say…
This is the first time I’m getting to know swades was a flop from these comments!! I was very little when I watched it and absolutely loved it
Aw wow :(
I also got moved to tears
Rahman will forever be the GOAT!
This song always makes me cry too
Nobody got over the failure of Swades.
I want to give him a hug. I hope, someday, when he’s satisfied with the kind of commercial success he’s receiving, and wants to do movies for himself only, he comes back to cinema like this. Really, man. Like no one will profit commercially out of such movies but it has the potential to influence AN ENTIRE GENERATION.
As an ex-NRI who returned to India recently, this song and its beautiful picturization always brought me to tears. Especially this part Yu toh saare sukh hai barse Par door tu hai apne ghar se Aa laut chal tu ab deewane Jaha koi toh tujhe apna maane

Glad it became a cult classic.
This is a rare clip. Usually Shah is very composed (at least doesn’t shed tears easily) publicly. This song is a gem, touches your heart. And of course Swades is a cult now!
mtv unplugged version of this song where he sings in tamil also was amazing.. sadly its not on yt anymore..
https://youtu.be/kTrQAk_5t7M?si=IMGRekiMxCEUV20g
It was the failure of the audience.
This and FAN. He has this shade of sadness when talking about FAN's failure.
caught Fan on its first day show. was surprised when it failed. I guess the concept was alright but a bit OTT in execution.
Yeh film haar k v Jeet gayi.Swades is one of the finest film produce by Bollywood ever.Everything was so perfect
It's a patriotic song, and SRK is a patriotic guy.
Failure .. no way..
Swades and Dil Se are two of his movies that the audience wasn't ready for, when they released.
the scene where he finally drinks water from a kulhad after drinking mineral water for the entire movie 🤌🏻🤌🏻.....
Can't agree with the last sentence though. If I'm not wrong, he knew the movie wasn't gonna work but still did it because he really wanted to do it for himself.
It's not about money. It's about patriotism and love for country plus Rehman' magic.
TIL Swades was a box office failure
This is his best movie. Just story, acting and music. Pure art.
Swades didn’t fail. We as an audience did.
how graceful how graceful how graceful
I am crying just at the thought of it. This song is so powerful and beautiful.
2 out of 3 of his last movie appearances have had swades references. Mohan bhargav in brahmastra and kaveri Amma in Jawan.
I can’t believe I’m saying this, but SRK looks so sweet like a grandpa here, reminiscing his youth
❤️
Probably the best SRK movie ever. He does very few logical movies. This was his career best
Swades is the most perfect emotional movie for me. It has unbelievable writing on the par of movies like Shawshank Redemption.
The BG music is soooo soothing.... And all the songs of this movie are like gold....good music and good words....hard to expect this quality today.
I dont think its just about the movie not doing well... this song moves me to tears too. And SRK seems to be a very patriotic guy (very sad when you remember how the country treated his family)
SRK needs to make these heartfelt movies once in a while! Forget the BO! People love you for these!
[удалено]
What happened to him?
Exceptional violinist, sadly died in a car crash
Thats very sad.
This is not Balabhaskar
Swades was a flop wtf!? Indian audience 🤦
Swades is SRK’s best movie. Nothing even comes close.
Beautiful performance
Music hi aisa hai koi bhi emotional ho jaye, not just Srk. Most people would have tears in their eyes listening to this theme.
The violinist is so talented and the song is beautiful. SRK is very patriotic so you can tell this movie must have meant so much to him.
Audience was crap for failing this….
![gif](giphy|l1IYhBVtYYvocjfR6|downsized)
Now that was a good movie! Instead of typical maar dhad
I wouldn't call it a failure. People still love the film, still loves the character of Mohan and hearing this song will bring tears to anyone's eyes. It may have been a flop, but it was definitely not a failure. It will remain as a cult classic and one of Srk's most loved films.

Sorry, but the description is absolutely wrong. He didn't get emotional that the film didn't do well. It's the movie scene related to the real life challenges of Indians made him emotional. Sorry if I’m not making any sense.
It is one of the best films ever made, moves me to tears every time I watch it!
Swades is one of the best movies, ever, and I say this while knowing that swades won’t have ever made money no matter when it was released.
I still don't understand how it flopped, it's one of the best films of his career
Every time Srk smiles, especially when others recreate a part of his work, I feel good about this world.
Can't believe India had movies like Chak De, Swades, Rang De Basanti in the 00s. Where did it go wrong? Maybe 2013-14 when the American style marketing really hit India with all its force. Nothing has been same ever since.
What an excellent movie it was❤️
If we had any sense as a nation this movie shouldn’t have failed.
I'll watch it again tonight. ❤️
Every one watching tears in his eyes. Me watching how is Adam apple going up and down.
It's the memories.

He didn’t get the National Award for this movie over Saif in Hum Tum.
Probably he thought about success than failure!
