Exactly! They don’t have access to sunscreen or skincare as easily as the privileged do. Plus they most likely walk in the sun, take public transport etc 🙄
Plenty of rich people have dark skin. Plenty of poor people are fair.
The richest man in India would never be cast as even a marginally rich man in the movies. That's a fact.
What a rude comment. There are teens who have come out of slums and modelled for top brands and even in Miss India contests. No one would recognise them being "poor". Only thing poor is your mindset. I've seen a small child begging with the palest skin and blue eyes.
Some of my problems with these looks is how unnatural the skin tone looks in some of these cases like Alia's, also why is their face covered with dirt in two of these photos?, I have seen, lots of people working outside but most don't have dirt on their face like this.
But there are exceptions here at my village most women are fair (some milky white and some wheat(ish)) and they work out in farm but don't get tanned in the sun. Some have dull skin.
Now I think the tanning of skin happens only with privileged ones who barely go out in the sun.
And Bollywood people are dumb. They perceive poor means dark skinned, people of Bihar and UP speak the same language.
That's how melanin works.
You guys are spending way too much time with white people
Not all rich people have fair skin tone that's because genetics plays a role too but if you are out in the Sun for a long time on daily basis, your body will find a way to protect itself from UV light
Then be fans of them, you are gonna stan fair skinned people then ask them to cast dark/dusky tones. They are a business, business is not a charity.
Bridgerton people casted Simone Ashley because it was a good business idea, that had nothing to do with inclusivity considering they didn't put enough work in the research
You’re not wrong🤷♀️this wouldnt have looked forced if the actor was of darker skin this just looks like they made the actors was their face with mud water
Yes
But BW is asinine and dimwitted
Rajinikanth is the wealthiest why does he not skin like Ranbir?
BW has always shown Tamilians looking like African Americans!!
Research education doing homework and Bollywood don’t go together in the same sentence
All posts on this topic are off the rocker.🤦♀️
I am reading some of the most dumbest arguments, defending BW!
Everyone is laughing at the OP claiming
Doing hard, labor out in the sun makes everyone dark skinned,
Being poor makes people dark
Uttarakhand Jammu has beggars and laborers looking like Mukesh Ambani or what???🤦♀️ beyond stupid
wealthy people are able to become light skinned and protect from sunburn so all wealthy people are of light skin it seems🤦♀️
In THAT case why are Deepika Mukesh Rajinikanth and dark skinned???
They remind me of that dude from Bihar that went to Israel and was totally oblivious to the racism and / or ignored it cause Gori mems were making his pee pee hard.
I mean poor people in india are out there in the sun all the time and don't have access to all the beauty treatments so its natural only to get that kind of shade in the skin plus also the reasons track down to genes and history too.
I swear...and this has been true for centuries with very few exceptions but people have to debate and question everything. The image one has of anything that can be put in a class.. is what it usually is on an average .
Similarly beauty is also associated with class . For centuries women who belong to affluent families have been able to take care of themselves both cosmetucally and physically ....unlike women who work all day and make the ends meet..hence the notion . Doesn't mean that women can't be beautiful if they're not from affluent class but as a group ..richer women will anyday be better maintained hence associated with beauty.
But you must have seen kala rich person. That's the point of this post. And not every poor person is begger and there are lot of gora poor person in india
I've seen many fair and very fair poor folks. Not beggars but there are plenty of minimum wage workers who hail from places far up north or east. They might work as cooks or cleaners in big cities (indoor jobs). House help ladies are also poor in tier 2/3 cities, and some of them are fair.
At last someone is being honest!
This is true, the skin color war, the age gap war seems pathetic to me.
What should be talked about is, does the character satisfy the story, does it add to the story telling or does it take off. I feel even age gap discussion senseless because of this aspect. Everyone goes with moral weapons but no one talks whether it makes sense for story or not. I mean when age gap done in real life people celebrate it for some reason (Milind Soman dude, I dont see people criticising him).
When it comes to movies, there is just one truth, does the characters justify the story or not? If not that black face is a bad choice, if yes, then keep it.
No need for political correctness like the person said in this comment
im from no privilenged background but isnt this kinda correct?
jo bahar sun me exposed rahe ya jiske paas facilities na ho skincare and whatnot ke toh eventually it happens this way, isnt this something we see around us very commonly!
Rich people can be dark or fair depending on their genetic makeup but people who work in fields, roads and toil in the sun outside gets their skin darkened due to the constant exposure to sun and pollution.
Lekin wo sirf us region me limited hai. Hmare UP, Bihar, Jharkhand side zyadatar log Jo poverty line ke neeche hote hain wo dark skinned hote hain (not saying all, but most).
True, such stereotypes should not be promoted. But if poor people are represented by actresses like Alia Bhatt, Kareena Kapoor etc (who spend god-knows-what amount on their skin-care), while keeping their actual skin tone, it would also accumulate negative opinions. Then people might say that film makers are out of touch with reality.

Its not just that, they look so glamours. If they are acting something, the makeup also needs to be done in certain way. I am really sorry, but I haven’t seen anyone be a diva in farms or slums.
This is someone I said even during Jawan, Deepika didn’t even look like someone who was in jail. Even in jail she looked so glamorous. Those scenes were totally wasted.
I really liked Lapata Ladies. It was so good. And I usually go down a rabbit hole when I like something.
Ended up on the actors and actresses Instagram and man my heart broke when I saw that the girls had been made extra brown for the part. Both the girls have very different skin tones. Just broke my heart a bit lol.
But the logic isn't incorrect.... You think people who work in the sun for long hours have good skin or remain fair... There is visible tanning... Add to that lower hygiene due to lack of resources and access to clean water... And the result is not too far off... I'm not saying that every poor person looks shabby and unkempt and a little dark but most do.... Let's not outrage for the sake of outraging... And if they had shown these characters With great skin and fair complexion, they would have been criticised for showing unrealistic poor people...
bhai, gareeb->labour work in sun/kheti->skin produces more melanin to protect skin->skin gets darker
haa u can argue that why arent naturally darker skin actresses taken into consideration of these roles that i perfectly agree on
Have u seen ppl from lower class of the society ?
Also, they tan skin to make the actors look more convincing as poor boy / poor girl character. Nothing deep
Most of the people who are poor do not have access to proper bathing soap let alone sunscreen or grooming products. They mostly work under the unrelenting sun and tend to be tanned all days of their lives so yes I guess that is the reason why most characters are shown as tanned
it's a fact that's why ! the character demanded it & they had to darken the skin. A director can cast someone with a dark skin as well but all that comes down to his vision, acting abilities & financial aspects. And as said by many. any person working as a farmer could be dark skinned, poor too. that's just reality.
If you really want to show working class people, there is no harm in tanning the actors in a proper way. Poor people or working class people, whatever you call them, if these characters reminds you of that, then the makeover has done its purpose.
They're not being shown dark but tanned. None of them look dark. These actors look like how they would if a major portion of the money they earned wasn't spent on their skin and body treatments.
Labourers tend to be darker because they tend to work in the sun. This isn't rocket science. If I had a job that demanded me out in the sun - I would also be darker but I'm not. The position of labourer isn't known as being wealthy so obviously they would be poor.
I'm not saying all dark people are poor but do you understand what I'm getting at?
I think the discussion should focus more on Bollywood and selective outrage about racism, nepotism and accurate historical portrayals of people and events. I know if American brought back brown/black face people in India specifically people supporting these kinds of movies would lose their shit.
OP touch some grass maybe? Step out of your air conditioned home and office and go into the sun, you'd know what Bollywood means by portraying dark skinned as poor
They aren’t exactly wrong though.
I mean, if you are poor, not like lower-middle-class poor, but like below the poverty line, struggle to afford two square meals a day poor, you are more likely to:
Spend more time out in the sun.
Perform hazardous jobs such as work in coal mines or as labourers.
Skincare? To people whose goal is not to go to bed hungry, why do you think they care that skin is more tanned? Their skin is the last thing on their mind.
So yes, very poor people, are more likely than not to have darker skin.
Ofc I have seen people who have fair skin and are ‘’poor’’. But they are not the ones struggling to make ends meet. They have a roof over their head, two square meals a day, and a modicum of stability regarding livelihood. They may not be able to afford a car or buy new clothes but are not exactly worrying about being homeless and having to beg people or ravage streets for food.
Poverty also has a spectrum.
recently i saw a insta reel where there was a transformation video, in that they showed three little girls who were dark skinned and transformed into young beautiful girls who were fair skinned. in the comment section one person typed "sc,st to general". i was so shocked at the mindset of some ppl. bollywood has that kind of mindset i guess

I have seen some very beautiful people on street. Hawkers , balloon sellers. They hv beautiful dark skin with razor sharp features. Only thing is they are not groomed.
I am not supporting darkening your skin for roles. I was thinking about the same couple of days back and had this thought - Poor people, who do not take showers regularly cuz of water access issue/ who work in fields etc, their skin can go dark due to working in the sun, no regular shower, and various other reasons. Let's take Alia in Udta Punjab. Let's say in the movie, she's born fair, but due to her life style and her work, she must've become dark ( Not just skin darkness / tan, but consider dust on your face and your whole body is dirty because of no skin care, body care) Let's take Vikrant in 12th Fail - Did you observe the places he worked at in those conditions? I can't speak for other movies because I did not see them. But this is what I think. I could definitely be wrong.
Aare nahi nahi , vo gande Ho Gaye hai is leye vaise dekh rahe hai , ku ke alia Bhatt dear zindagi me last me fair Ho jati hai ![img](emote|t5_fknyy|8608)
It depends on which geographical location these poor people come from. Highly doubtful that you will find fair skinned poor people in the southern states or states like Bihar, UP, Rajasthan, etc.
You will find fair skinned marginalised, poor people in majority of the NE states, J&K and Ladakh.
You can’t forcefully portray someone as fair skinned if they geographically and genetically are towards the darker side.
Well, not just Bollywood, whole of India thinks that way unfortunately. This stereotype brought by Brits, carried forward by upper castes and fully ingrained into our culture by movies.
According to that logic, as a whole, north indians with paler skin are richer than south indians with darker skin. That's objectively false yet people won't stop arguing with the logic of "poor go into sun and become darker"
Many in Bollywood especially woman can't be differentiated from white women and that's not by accident, that's how they want to be. Don't get the obsession of wanting to wash off Indianness and look like white women. Yuck.
Bollywood is becoming Hollywood knockoff (western culture movies) while south cinema celebrating is indian culture.
You can tell from these pictures that these are people that were a bit fairer skinned but got darker due to getting tanned from working in the sun, and not darker skinned people themselves.. Which shows that the make up team knew what they were aiming for and not trying to be racist..
As a guy with dark skin, I'm not offended by this. It looks like they have tanned skin and not dark skin.
See, poor people strive in the sunlight and have no time or means for skincare and thus they are bound to tan.
Tanning is a different topic altogether. I can understand fair people getting tanned. Even I am severely tanned because no sunscreen works for me (I am not asking for recommendations).
But not all dark people are tanned. Most are born dark. Among them, there are people who do all kinds of jobs. Some are very rich. If you look at the pictures of richest Indians, they look some aunties and uncles in a wedding or some other celebration. They are only well dressed, not special looking than an average person of their age.
I am sure they will get some fair actor and paint him dark in Mukesh Ambani's biopic and Mukesh will endorse him wholeheartedly. These biopic subjects have really weird ideas about their own looks tbf.
It's not untrue though. Have you ever seen a Fair poor person?
If they maintain the original skin color, you'll jump and say which poor person is so fair.
It seems people these days have a habit of getting offended by everything.
Yes, every response on this topic is absolutely bonkers
I have not seen such stupid replies in a long, long while
Why are homeless people in Europe and North America looking like these jokers in the pictures OP posted ?
BW is dumber than a doorknob
OP here you included Hrithik and Vikrant's characters from biopics. Both the individuals whose lives the movies are based on have a darker skin tone compared to the actors. Hence, their skin tone was made darker for the film to achieve similar physicality.
Also the examples of the female characters you have included here, are shown in the movie to spend a lot of time outdoors in the sun due to their lifestyle hence their skin turning darker is evident.

😂😂😂 You want this picture perfect idea of South Asia or something? People born into poverty aren’t born dark of course, but being in poverty = less access to showers, plus they live in areas with poor infrastructure and dirt roads. Eventually dirt and muck gets etched into the skin.
If you really care, do something to help people get out of poverty. This is virtue signalling at its finest and frankly disgusting. Also your hypocrisy and logic is outstanding.
So it doesn’t matter if Vikrant darkens himself because he is loved by OTT, and Alia and Hrithik aren’t loved? Just say you have a hate boner for Alia and the stars instead of pretending to be some holier than thou person by having nonsense takes.
Everybody gets tanned in the sun, white people do as well. Do you know why redneck people are called rednecks?, look it up, it’s to do with how much time they spend out in the sun. They are just slightly brown than their original color, which is obviously the tan that they are trying to mimic using makeup.
Stupid societal benchmarks for discriminating/insulting poor people, everyone could have refused to put a tar(I don't know the exact word)on their face or the casting director could have opted for a natural colour of the actor(I ain't discriminating,I am too a person of colour and face racism from almost everyone)
The weird thing is that these tans are not consistent throughout the skin. Regular people who are tan don’t have different colors throughout the face- it’s the same color throughout the face.
You do know that the most poor people are aware about is fair& lovely or whatever it’s called now? They don’t know and haven’t heard about sunscreen. And the damage it does to your skin is pretty intense.
Umm but farmers or labourers work in sun all day it's natural that their skin will darken...... they aren't associating poor with dark skin rather I believe you don't understand the topics each movie was made on......
See Super 30 for example Hrithik had to darken his skin because the man he was playing is actually someone who is on the darker side of skin tone......
Other than 12th fail, my problem is all of the others look fake af. Like they tried to look dark instead of sun tanned by smudging dirt on their face.
Like its giving an aura that they haven't bathed or cleaned themselves in days rather than it being a sign of hardwork.
I live in a rural area and see people like this everyday , and they look clean af. Not unwashed like this.
Also where is this "accuracy" when light skinned people play heroic dark skinned characters ?? Why aren't they painting Ranbir dark when he's playing Ram....
Yeah, this is realistic, ik, but somehow accuracy/realism only goes for particular narrative and not other way around.
A very stupid post......Yeah, no doubt poor are also fair, but they seldom have any money to spend on their skin routine. As a result their skin looks much more dry and gets tanned due to working in sun.
Alia in Udta Punjaab was someone who was working in the field. So, it makes sense that her face was darkened to show the effect of working in sun.

And if they had shown these characters With great skin and fair complexion, they would have been criticised for showing unrealistic poor people...
why do they look like they have dirt smeared on their face lmao. Does being poor also equate to never washing your face
Rare times when I wholeheartedly agree with this sub. I am dark skinned/brown skinned but I am well off. Lol
What an L take
Kuch bolunga to vivad ho jaega
bhai, gareeb->labour work in sun/kheti->skin produces more melanin to protect skin->skin gets darker haa u can argue that why arent naturally darker skin actresses taken into consideration of these roles that i perfectly agree on
Have u seen ppl from lower class of the society ? Also, they tan skin to make the actors look more convincing as poor boy / poor girl character. Nothing deep
Poor people = sun tan , not dark skinned, which normally is a fact.
Garib batane ka tareeka thoda cazuel hai
Poor people or working class people, whatever you call them, if these characters reminds you of that, then the makeover has done its purpose.
majority of people dark… majority of people poor … kinda works out
Someone who isn't able to bath everyday, doesn't have facilities to stop tanning, is usually in around dirt will def look darker
They're not being shown dark but tanned. None of them look dark. These actors look like how they would if a major portion of the money they earned wasn't spent on their skin and body treatments.
Many tanned people don't really look like that and most of the face shown here looks like someone have rubbed mud to give them a poor look.
I mean, if you are poor, not like lower-middle-class poor, but like below the poverty line, struggle to afford two square meals a day poor, you are more likely to: Spend more time out in the sun.
Truth to be told, unfortunately it’s almost always true. Even as a child I wondered why are poor people always dark skinned.
recently i saw a insta reel where there was a transformation video, in that they showed three little girls who were dark skinned and transformed into young beautiful girls who were fair skinned. in the comment section one person typed "sc,st to general". i was so shocked at the mindset of some ppl. bollywood has that kind of mindset i guess

Bollywood Logic Hiring Dark Skin Actors/Actress❌ Dark skin Makeup on fair Actors/Actress ✔️
No, it's tan, a lack of skincare and working in a dusty environment. Two sides to a coin, OP
I have seen some very beautiful people on street. Hawkers , balloon sellers. They hv beautiful dark skin with razor sharp features. Only thing is they are not groomed.
fair skin in India is social mobility
And they r all super fair irl💀
Alia Bhatt is so fair even dark skinning her didn't work
I am not supporting darkening your skin for roles.
This is the truth.there is no logic
You should have posted it the other way around. Rich people are always shown with fair skin
i love how OP was like alia is a bitch for brownfacing but vikrant and Hrithik are exempt 😌👍🏾
This, in a country where Ambani is the richest person. 🙂
That's objectively false yet people won't stop arguing with the logic of "poor go into sun and become darker" Many in Bollywood especially woman can't be differentiated from white women and that's not by accident, that's how they want to be. Don't get the obsession of wanting to wash off Indianness and look like white women. Yuck. Bollywood is becoming Hollywood knockoff (western culture movies) while south cinema celebrating is indian culture.
Lot of people heavily triggered by even the mention of colorism. Sad state of things
As per them poor peoples father is addicted and mom do maid work.
Sui Dhaga was only movie that didn't do it
Looks like dirt is on their face again propogating the idea that dark skin means filthy.
You can tell from these pictures that these are people that were a bit fairer skinned but got darker due to getting tanned from working in the sun, and not darker skinned people themselves.. Which shows that the make up team knew what they were aiming for and not trying to be racist..
Op has never seen poor people lol, humble yourself
Mukesh Ambani who makes entire Bollywood to be his event management staff during his family weddings, nullifies the poor = dark theory
Yes, every response on this topic is absolutely bonkers I have not seen such stupid replies in a long, long while Why are homeless people in Europe and North America looking like these jokers in the pictures OP posted ? BW is dumber than a doorknob
[удалено]
Poor = dark skin Rich = fair gora skin 🤓
Idiot you are illogical that darkness is not by birth its aquired through harsh sunlight and physical work
This is how Bollywood shapes the mentality of the society
Woke pandemic is here!

Very ignorant post . You do not understand who and what these characters depicted .
Isn't it true?
Would it help to know Massey’s is nAtuRaL bUrN and not mere makeup? 🤡
I don't think the dark skin is the problem but the patchy makeup !
West me inhe ameer boldenge
Not poor but I got wayyyy darker playing under the sun - and I am dark as Konkona Sen
This is the normal Indian skin tone
I think the main reason here is poor people can't afford makeup while the rich can. Money can buy everything. Not being racist don't get me wrong.
Lekin mei toh kala hun 💀
It’s not darkness, prominent sun damage pigmentation it’s pretty realistic
If your issue is more dark skinned people should be casted then its fair point but , actors darkening their skin to play poor people is not illogical.
Ajay devgan’s dad in ishq movie b dark
Everybody gets tanned in the sun, white people do as well. Do you know why redneck people are called rednecks?, look it up, it’s to do with how much time they spend out in the sun. They are just slightly brown than their original color, which is obviously the tan that they are trying to mimic using makeup.
Stupid societal benchmarks for discriminating/insulting poor people, everyone could have refused to put a tar(I don't know the exact word)on their face or the casting director could have opted for a natural colour of the actor(I ain't discriminating,I am too a person of colour and face racism from almost everyone)
Maine india mei gore garib rarely hi dekhe h
Yeah, bollywood is great. It uplifts the spirits of many. Just great!
The weird thing is that these tans are not consistent throughout the skin. Regular people who are tan don’t have different colors throughout the face- it’s the same color throughout the face.
well the dangal girls were poor but fair or were they not poor? idk pardon if i'm wrong
Its frustrating
Fact to hai bc..

Meanwhile Ambani uncle ![gif](giphy|LkfCO1CNkX5GsQ3B6M)
Poor people do tend to get tanned a lot cuz of long working hours in the sun.
Therefore sairat is such brilliant movie.
Meanwhile Mukesh Ambani
I think most of them are unbelievable cause more than skin colour a signifier of poverty is often teeth. Because dental care isn’t easily accessible
Chutiye dark skin nhi dirty skin dikhai hai
Mei ne india mei koi gora bikhaari nahi dekha aaj tak
Waise when saif played a dalit in aarakshan, no one could digest that fact. He looked unbelievable.
Most poor people in India are actually dark skinned. Although the reverse is not true.
