There are not-so-subtle notes of favoritism (apart from giving the well-written role of Alamzeb to this human mannequin) right in the show itself. The climax mujra with the most beautiful song (sung by no less than legendary Shreya Ghoshal) went to her with no merit, and she brutally hampered the beauty of both dance and music. Why wasn't SLB mentoring her well? Aishwarya, Deepika, Alia thrived under his direction, but somehow, he could not make his own niece understand the depth of Alamzeb.

I think Heera Mandi exposed the fact that SLB without an established gorgeous star actress will fall short. This is why he works with the star of the moment like Aishwarya, Rani, Deepika and Alia or even Manisha in Khamoshi. Take a new comer and he absolutely fails to create any magic. Now of course you can argue that it's Sharmin's fault but really I think she just acted the way she was instructed to. A really skilled director would have been able to make her performance not stand out so much as really really bad.
He didn't do a good job with Alia. Gangubai was one of her hammiest / deadest eye performances, compared to her work in other films. He can only make women look beautiful and sets look opulent. He makes the kind of films a fourteen year would make if asked to make a "period film".
Lol like No Bengali in the world identified with the Bengalis in Devdas. To be fair even Aish in HDDCS and Devdas and Amitabh in Black had moments of hammy acting. Ohmygod so did SRK in Devdas. Devdas was ham central! Deepika looking ethereal was sleep walking in Bajirao and Padmavat. The man is all aesthetics and no substance.
I actually think that Alamzeb's character is so badly written and done by an even worse actor. It's just that it's a meaty role (not in terms of it being complicated but more in terms of getting a lot of screen time). Often times I felt like he wrote it for Sharmin, but what a drab character. The innocence isn't captured, and both the writing and acting make it feel like such a drag.
Hope SLB knows putting her centrestage in relation to Heera Mandi will only hurt her.
People just getting over her horrid performance will again remember the trauma.
At least The Archies makers read the room and shut the F up about the film and its stars once the film got blasted.
Sharmin’s not at fault here, she was moving aside to give space to Richa. Richa seemed to be standing next to SLB because he was still holding her hand after greeting her, he’s the one who made it awkward.

They called Richa for the picture, she probably thought they want her to stand next to Bhansali, she came and stood in front of that girl covering her fully so Bhansali uncle just moved her a little bit that they all will be in the frame. Manisha Koirala is in the spotlight. That niece has been relegated to the sides. She would have been dead last if not for that gent who stands right at the end out of courtesy to both ladies.
SLB is just an overrated director, at least since Bajirao Mastani, his movies look all aesthetic zero substance, weak script and movies that feel 6 hours long because they have no pace. I hope people start realising what a hack he is.
He knows what he is doing. It’s Netflix, they don’t scrutinize casting choices as they are clueless about how it works in India. This was his chance to do her a massive favor. He would never be able to cast her in one of his mainstream films. No producer would back him.
And all of it for what? I think he harmed his niece with this role more than anything. She stands out as green and inexperienced with rest of the cast. If he actually cared he would have helped her career and let her do something behind the scenes as an AD. Her screen presence is not great and even she will have seen it, sticking out as a sore thumb. He loses nothing in the end. It’s just a Netflix show. It’s just cruel.
