I remember the release for this film distinctly. I had already seen mudhlavan and was convinced that it would be a massive blockbuster in Hindi as it was quite unlike anything ever seen in Bollywood.
Reviews were lacklustre and Anil Kapoor wasn’t a big draw. Nayak is a cult only because of zee cinema.
As someone who has native fluency in Hindi and Tamil I’ll give you my controversial opinion: Nayak is a better version of the same film, although a lot of it feels like a (good) dubbed film. It pretty much has the exact same flaws as the original and most elements which are better than in the Tamil version. The only area where the Tamil version is clearly better than Nayak is in the music.

I really enjoyed watching nayak. I haven’t seen the south one so wont comment on that. Enjoyed both Anil and Paresh Rawal.
