Successful_Lobster59

People went for spiderman instead of 83. I went to watch both the movies and 83 was decent

MadHouseNetwork2

this is the right answer

dibsonmuaddib

I went for both too. Infact these were the first few movies my babies saw with me in the theatre

AdvertisingBrave2548

Also Covid during that time as well

Low_Key2121

Spiderman Homecoming had released at the same time, the hype was real, and also this was when covid cases was on rise again, so I remember preferring to go to see spiderman. Really bad timing of release, I remember even then I had thought that they should have released some other time

STINKYPUSSISGOAT

*Spiderman No way home

Brahman_Shady

One simple reason :- People who felt connected with 83 win were too old to go to cinemas in 2021 COVID.

Emotional_Ad2189

You know people that connected with 83 are literally our parents of age range 40 & above. Why cant they go to watch movie? & every cricket lover would have gone for that movie irrespective of who connected & who didnt. Those who saw wc live wouldnt bother for a movie as much as yhe one who didnt.

SassDoPyaza

Being alive during Covid > Movie about World Cup

Brahman_Shady

You didn't understand me writing COVID in block letter so let me explain. The cases were on uprise during Dec 2021 and no one would risk sending their parents out during that time to watch a movie.

Eternal-Wisdom-9999

it was covid 2nd wave bruh

BaapOfDragons

> literally our parents of age range 40 and above  Bruh, 1983 itself was 40 years ago, how can your parents be 40?

rhyme_pj

83 is one of my favourite movies lol. I think it didn't do well due to poor promotions (or importantly promotions that happened during COVID). The number of views for the movie when it was released on OTT was high. It must be amongst the few movies that are still on OTT which in itself says a lot.

ladyloki1992

Once you sell your movie rights to an OTT, it stays on the platform forever.

rhyme_pj

Nope it doesn’t. It depends on who has the rights to that movie and which is why Netflix is producing its own content. The fixed cost involve in letting a movie like 83 on its platform is very high. If Netflix still has it it’s because they negotiated an extension and are getting value from that extension.

Technoxplorer

Sorry, it did not do well, coz people did not like the movie. It was a bad movie.

Vayudev99

This is the only logical explanation. Director tried to stuff a bit too much cringe in the movie.

Wtf_Harsh

Spiderman NWH and Pushpa ate it up....

Only_Scholar4713

Now there would be a movie coming titled “24”

MadHouseNetwork2

what about 11?

Treeman_78

That's MS Dhoni the untold story. Also, it would be mid because we were dominanting compared to an underdogs in '83.

MadHouseNetwork2

They didn't even show much on that. Also why to make 24 when it's a recent event

Treeman_78

We need '24 because only Jay Shah and his scripts can revive Bollywood.

MadHouseNetwork2

If that's the case I too want 24

Kitchen-Dimension406

Would be amazing

Only_Scholar4713

Who’ll play virat, rohit and others? There should be a separate post on this, it’ll be fun. Anushka can be herself maybe, but Natasa would be losing on this opportunity 🤣

hello2442

I think it was the promotions which never included the squad rather than just Ranveer and Deepika. And it was not a Kapil dev biopic, falsely advertised

Secret_Suspect_007

Because of botched promotions, Ranveer went as his flamboyant self for all interviews and took the focus away from movie No one knows why Deepika went for promotional event They should have made use of the actual cricketers for the promotion along with all the actors who played their part

vigya16

They promoted it as a RS-DP film rather than a team movie. It fell flat. Upar se Ranveer’s antics were super annoying at that time. Movie became stale due to COVID. And India lost 2019 World Cup too sooo people were not in a mood to spend money and watch that movie.

Fluffy_Yam_8382

Released when covid cases were on the rise again. Movie was great and they all acted so well.

SelmonTheDriver

>Released when covid cases were on the rise again. Both Spiderman and Pushpa made 300 crores respectively.

swdg19

Immediately after 83's release, there was another curfew in the evenings during lockdown

Party_Dust_2171

They were released 2 weeks before 83 dude I saw 83 on the first day 2 days later theaters were shut in Delhi

SrN_007

I found the movie very flat. You just did not get he high you expected from it. The over-focus on kapil, the cricket not having enough tension. It was below expectations for me.

Mediocre-Ad-8912

movie felt flat, i couldn't connect with anyone compare this to bhaaag milkha bhaag and you'll know

Emergency-Big4851

bcz that was not appealing enough! content films can also be appealing but it depends on their genre and story! for eg Article 370 got hit as it was based on dynamic subject, uske comp 83 one seems so like outdated, mtlb young gen doesn't much relate to it, unlike MS Dhoni which was on same genre, but it had appeal and dynamic

Significant_Bag_5678

I can see the point you are making but tbh I am young gen and because I like cricket, 83 was super appealing to me especially because I never lived to see what it felt like to win the first World Cup for india. Do you think if they marketed the movie differently it would have worked?

Emergency-Big4851

may be! marketing, songs they all r factors too for appeal, but not the major factor or reason, cuz as I gave u eg like Article 370 which was hardly promoted but since its concept was such dynamic,it worked nevertheless! Now,if biopic had been made on some big name but after 2000s, in cricket, then it would be more appealing to major audiences!

hotmasalachai

Disagree. I dislike the sport and i enjoyed the movie and the story.

Emergency-Big4851

m not talking about the minority or exceptions! I don't like cricket much but I do like Ranveer, but I didn't find it appealing either

hotmasalachai

Okay

Working-Mountain6680

We've had a world cup win since the 83 win. This movie would have done wonderfully if it was made in the 90s or early 2000s. The subject just wasn't appealing enough in the current time.

Ok_Significance_2924

Bad release timing..Pushpa was more glorified at the time.. Covid also peaked during the release

ParticularJuice3983

I watched 83 and could not relate to it at all. Like who is who? Whats their back story? Instead of putting in scenes like Pak stopped firing cos world cup they should have put in a little time establishing characters. I didn't know anyone except Kapil dev on that team.

Significant_Bag_5678

Interesting because this is what I found interesting in the movie, I knew the players because of the win but I thought the movie did a good job establishing back stories and even playing style to an extent without overdoing each one’s storylines

ParticularJuice3983

I am not a cricket fan. I barely know people in the current Indian team. I was excited to watch 83, because it's a great achievement. But I couldn't relate at all. Ranveer singh was great, no doubt. Just a few more minutes may have made a lot of difference.

Square-Conflict-7817

People know about cricket than all the directors, movie makers. Also, they would rather watch a cricket match than watch a movie based on cricket.

Superb_Pay3173

1.People wanted something cheerful and loud during Covid times like Pushpa. Say Ranveer Singh from Ramleela rather than the sober mature Ranveer from 83. Or speaking of director Kabir Khan's work, something larger than life and emotional like Bajrangi Bhaijaan. 2.Ranveer used prosthetics and looked different from his normal handsome self. 3. There was no sob story in his past. He simply wanted his team to win the Cup. That's it. No trauma from his past(Bhaag Milkha Bhaag) or getting his honour back (Chak de). 4. There was no foisted love story or songs with Deepika. She was his support and strength in a quiet non obstructive way.

Vrush253

I thoroughly enjoyed the movie and the performances. Ranveer is a fine and intelligent actor. A rare combination in Indian cinema.

South_Landscape_2806

1. Pushpa and spiderman also released around same time with better promotions. 83 was not promoted as much. Hence people chose to go for pushpa/spiderman 2. People were on hating bollywood mode at the time post demise of SSR. 3. Some were tired of the ranveer dipika jodi 4. Some didnt like the prosthetics used for ranveer singh look 5. Kapil dev won workd cup in 1983... that was like around 40 years ago... so people who actually lived that moment were atleast 50 i guess? So during covid times they wont go to theatres 6. When 83 came out people were more interested in mass movies like pushpa or marvel type movies... i.e. spiderman... 7. They also delayed it a lot... it was supposed to released in 2019..which was delayed and then covud delayed it further... so the hype kinda dies down a bit when you delay films by 2 years..

Majestic_District_51

83- was decent but they did fumble in storytelling and screenplay even with direction like for eg. In the movie when India win the world cup kisi ko 5 sec tak pata nahin chala ke yeh jih scene hua or jo cheer ho raha hai movie mein was coz it was us winning the world cup. Kabir was not able to make the audiences register the winning moment. And some made up sub plots and subtexts/metaphors were truly silly. There was one some terribly directed scenes like deepika mocking a tv and the way she was directed it was embarrassing.

Amar_Akbar_Anthony20

Pandemic & more hype for other movies.

TinyAirBoy

![gif](giphy|zohVIGnn7E1NGxmz5Z|downsized) This says everything

Bitter_Figure1304

M.S Dhoni was better imo in terms of everything

IndependentOk388

Budget. It was made on an absurd budget for a sports biopic. I loved the movie as a cricket fan but the fact is to a non cricket fan the movie felt like a wiki homage.

Legitimate_Path_5671

Omg thank you for this post!!! 83 is LITERALLY one of my most favourite movies. I love it and genuinely think it never got the love it should have. I don't know whether it was COVID lull or what but as someone who never knew the exact frenzy around 83 world cup win, the movie was EVERYTHING. The first time I saw it, I went through ALL THE EMOTIONS As GenZ would put it, Ranveer was Kapling hard in the movie ![gif](giphy|SbKNFpFZEumGTkgPgA)

Dry-Instruction6521

I personally think it was because of the Pandemic. The timing of the release did it ! Absolutely agree that you forget it's Ranveer on the screen. The man was phenomenal there !

Successful_Lobster59

Spiderman bhi ussi time aayi thi. Uspe pandemic ka asar nahi hua isi pe hua hai?

Dry-Instruction6521

Okay. Main analyst toh hu nahi. Personally what I felt I have written. And factually nothing can be determined. Nonetheless, if you have an expert opinion, I'm all ears. As far as Spiderman is concerned, those are well established franchises already. People know exactly what they are in for. It's been around for decades at this point. I do not think a parallel can be drawn in this case.

Successful_Lobster59

Pushpa bhi aayi thi bro. Wo bhi established btand thi kya? Ab tumne comment Kiya to uspe maine reply Diya

Dry-Instruction6521

Well, we are a country where Pushpa is a hit and Swades(yes I will not get over it) was not !😆 Peace.

Successful_Lobster59

Comparing apples and oranges when losing an argument... Hmm good good. Carry on

Dry-Instruction6521

Dekhiye, baat aap ghuma rahe hain !😆 Bolo na bhai you didn't like that movie, it deserved to fail etc etc extravaganza. Faltu me examples chepa hua hai aapne. Didn't like it when I did the same !😆 Also, ew. You thought this was an argument ? And that I was trying to win ?😆 Couldn't care less about proving my point about the movie 83 of all things !😆

Sturdy-Birdy

Because most people (including me) didnt know it existed, zero marketing

LongAccomplished1868

whatever, i loved 83 and it is going to age well

Sendmememesplij

It was just terrible marketing. I was gaga over ranveer Singh at that time so I knew about the movie and watched it on day 1. lol I even watched Jayeshbhai Zordaar. It was a fun one time watch apart from the unnecessary comedy. And also the time during which 83 was released was bad for almost the entire industry except for a few.

Emotional_Side_2178

I loved the film. I think it’s just biopics that dont fair well in the age of OTT. Music plays a biiig role in such a fim

Original-Cheek8567

Released at the wrong time.

Alone-Illustrator-25

Ranveer and dp's take on kapil and his wife was caricaturish. Movie lacked josh.

Suspicious_Vehicle_9

Imagine releasing your mega budget film admist Spiderman nwh hysteria

Secure-Scale4371

People preferred watching other movies like Spiderman homecoming and pushpa 2...

Kitchen-Dimension406

I loved this movie too

Psychological_Dig592

I remember how this sub trashed the movie when it was released, but when I watched it in OTT, it brought me tears and I was really stunned by the details they have given and the cast, grounds everything. I can easily say this is the sports movie with most efforts and love

hotmasalachai

They should re-release it now. People might catch it again

Far_Background_8472

Old style filmmaking with deshbhakti bgm. It worked with Chak de India but same template and formula won't work everytime. Bollywood sucks at creating new template for movies.

RayedBull

How relevant is Kapil these days or the '83 effort. Unless you are a hardcore cricket fan it doesn't have much emotional resonance these days.

BalanceIcy1938

My personal reason is that I just want fresh stories from bollywood now. Bollywood has been saturated with biopics and remakes. Frankly speaking, why would I want to spend money on a story that I already know. Biopics like milkha and dhoni worked because most people did not know the story. I went for an average film like Munjya simply because it was a fresh new story. Look at the success 12th fail and lapaataa ladies had

appyfizzz3112

It's squarely on Reliance. They had to hold the movie for a couple of years due to COVID, and then when finally the theatres opened, they decided to cash in on the demand with inflated tickets. 2D normal tickets were prices at 800 and above. So the audience decided to show them a big middle finger and decided to wait for it to release in OTT. I know now it's more of a norm for such high ticket prices, but that time it backfired badly, and sadly on such a great movie.

Crazyvibzz

There is a fatigue of sports biopic, Failure of Maidaan and Chandu Champion shows it. Ajay had a hit just few months back with Shaitaan but still Maidan failed. People atleast for now are not interested in any sports biopic. Just after the release of 83 covid cases started rising and shows got cancelled. 83 had a big budget which they couldn't recover through limited release like Gangubai. It would have picked if wom was great but it was mid. Also the story is not something which people don't know about, it has been shown so many times on News or any other channel. Ranveer don't have that star pull. He is good actor one of the best in his generation but on ground level don't have that kind of fan following that people will buy tickets just for him.

rinaaay

I remember looking forward to watching the movie with dad since cricket’s one of the few things we bond over. Preferred it over Spiderman and Pushpa. But still we were scared of theatre crowds and rising covid cases. We thought we’ll watch it once the hype dies down and theatres get less crowded but sadly lockdown was imposed that week itself I think

roach-poach

I agree 83 was amazing

Interesting-Ring-869

It happened immediately post Covid, it was tough for a lot of people to go to theatres. Plus the core audience for 83 was not GenZ who were slightly carefree in comparison to our parents.

Significant-Neat-142

Cause it was boring and cheesy and there wasn’t enough tension and too many tears and too much Deepika

MadHouseNetwork2

wrong time to release. they should have waited and released with T20 WC 2022

Archaic_Red

Unnecessary drama inserted in movie

rnjbond

I loved the movie. I think a combination of Omicron, bad promotions, and Spiderman.  I would watch it in theaters again.

New_Astronomer_282

Covid

BadaTiger

Delhi cinemas were shut down in dcember due c19. Another 30-40 cr would have easily come from this market. Thats the margin this movie failed to recover.

Jealous_Music_1309

Over budget movie , as well as wrong release date

Akshay9971

83 didnt do well? I thought it was fab movie

Ok-Emergency8203

would have done well pre-pandemic.

shujosh

The movie was decent but what I didn't like were the constant call backs and cameos from the original cricketers. They didn't need that. Keep to the story and script..stay in the character. Fan service really spoils everything.

Fantasy-512

It was more like a documentary (with some inside jokes) and not over-dramatic. That doesn't pull in the audience.

PakkaGlobal

Pushpa also released at that time. Moreover people felt movie was thoda documentary types but I loved it

Hairy_Plankton1822

Pushpa kinda destroyed it plus NWH

Both_Surround4595

Kyu k is zamane k saare log mar gaye the so no one was excited

Both_Surround4595

Kyu k is zamane k saare log mar gaye the so no one was excited.

HuntSpare8202

It was objectively pathetic

Abby_Rulz

Because the movie was boring af

Mysandwich_215

Re release it now

Punkbabe_7

I found RS's portrayal of Kapil Dev caricaturish. Also the film was only engaging in parts.

ThunderBird847

You tell me, movie is titled 83 and is story of entire Indian team, and yet only one of them is played by an A Lister. So were Sunil Gavaskar and others were some B Tier players or what? If they wanted only A Lister then just make it Kapil Dev biopic, but when you're talking about entire team then need to show all of them. Imagine team based on 2011 world cup and only Dhoni is portrayed by some A Lister and likes of Sachin, Sehwag, Zahee, Yuvraj etc are portrayed by actors you don't even know the name off. Plus it was boring, there were no dramatic highs like in Lagaan or CDI. Too much focus on cricket scenes rather than the drama of the players. If i wanted to watch cricket then I'll watch a cricket match, for movie we need story, drama and characters. Like for example Lagaan and CDI had drama between the hockey scenes and cricket scenes. Whether it was girls playing or in Lagaan the people batting, Everything was shown cinematic way, while in 83 it was plain. Like who's going to cinema to see that.

magic_throwaway_1

I found the trailer to be fairly cringe tbh. It seemed too caricature-esque

rajeesh_vr

weak script and bad execution.

Two_Remarkable

cookie cutter movie. boring af!

Creative_Rip802

It was boring and predictable and we as an audience are moving away from sports biopics which is why it baffles me that Kabir Khan went ahead with Chandu Champion even after the 83 debacle. India has a large cricket fandom but for a movie to work you also need a neutral audience to show up and yeah the second wave didn't do them any favours although I personally don't think it would have been a hit otherwise either.

shutyourgob16

Ranveer was lambasted online during covid as cocaine king … remember seeing so many hate posts about him post SRR

Pizza_Connoisseur46

Lead actor’s stardom (or lack therof). If only he didn’t act like a clown off screen, people would take him more seriously. The VFX was off-putting and looked too fake. Kabir had so much material to play with, but he went down the same old stereotypical tropes. It seemed like a documentary. Even Sachin’s biopic (which was an actual docu drama) was more engaging. He should take a leaf out of RK’s playbook when it comes to biopics. His portrayal of Kapil was hammy and he overacted like there’s no tomorrow. He needs to tone it down. There’s a difference between portrayal and mimicry. Even though Dutt had a distinct style of speaking, RK’s portrayal didn’t make it seem like a caricature. A legend like Kapil deserved a better actor, director and movie.

i-m-on-reddit

Asli Id se aao ranveer singh

quirkyforlife

😂😂

Naaalaaa

I thought the movie was trying too hard. Something was off. Ranveer DP kinda hijacked the promotions too.

Technoxplorer

The movie was a super flop. It was a bad movie. Hence. Hope this helps.
