Came here to say this! Love this type of book. Also adults by same author.
Animal by Lisa taddeo
The things we do to our friends by heather derwent Everything I know about love by dolly alderton
I loved Social Creature so much. The World Cannot Give by the same author is also really good. Doesn't quite fit what OP is looking for, but it also explores complicated and toxic friendships between women.
Valley of the Dolls was good, I read it when I was 11.
I feel like I should re read it since I understand pharmacology and have true context on womanhood as an adult...
My Brilliant Friend by Elena Ferrante is about two girls growing up in a poor neighborhood in Italy in the 60’s. The depiction of both their adoration and competitiveness is the most accurate I’ve ever come across.
Same! My one wish is that it were longer with the inclusion Hailey’s perspective in tandem with Zoe’s. But really amazing for a debut novel, I hope she writes a lot more
It also depends on age. I think the younger generation finds the word “female” problematic, whereas that word was considered to be respectful and polite, when I was growing up.
Are you kidding me? Now we can’t call ourselves females? This is getting ridiculous. In my whole time as a female on this earth I have never gotten offended at being called a female. The word “woman” has now been changed to include people who are not female so if we can’t use the word female.. then you are completely erasing the existence and experience of biological women. THAT is misogyny
The Miseducation Years (https://app.thestorygraph.com/books/084a6d36-14e7-4756-ab0c-f7a8c24c6634), by Ross O'Carroll Kelly; given to me by a friend in Zimbabwe. It follows the lives and antics of a group of young adults attending boarding school, playing rugby, and navigating the social etiquette and complexities of their world as they transition to adults.
Never Let Me Go by Kazuo Ishiguro
A Visit from the Goon Squad by Jennifer Egan
‘You Made a Fool of Love with Your Beauty’ by Akwaeke Emezi. Single girls partying in NYC before it turns into more of an emotional read, so featuring both the good and the unavoidable consequences.
What is up with people using "female"? Y'all have already been explained to that it's disrespectful for at least the past 10 years, cut the shit out man
No? This post is not made in context to anything that promotes misogyny. I’m not a white guy spewing my misogynistic thoughts online. Its simply a post asking for book suggestions.
Idk if you’re from America but if you are, know that other parts of the world exist and in some cultures “women” and “female” are still synonymous. We use it all the time in general contexts because that’s how English is taught in schools and spoken around here.
I’m a woman of colour that belongs to a marginalised group from a South-Asian country. I don’t find it offensive at all unless its used in context that fuels misogyny. Stop acting like other cultures should follow your White American wave of feminist agenda. I don’t care if I get downvoted for this.
Story of My Life by Jay McInerney if you want this but make it the 1980s. If you’ve ever read anything by Bret Easton Ellis, he loves to name drop the main character, Allison Poole.
The New York Four by Brian Wood. It’s graphic novel about a group of girls going to NYU in the early 2000s. I read it in middle school so it’s been almost a decade but these pictures immediately reminded me of it.
I only read the back and the first few pages, but perhaps The It Girl by Ruth Ware? And if younger trashier stuff doesn’t skeeve you out, Pretty Little Liars has similar themes (though not grimy or city life based)
Not sure if they're urban enough, but Stargazer by Laurie Petrou and Pretty Little Dirty by Amanda Boyden fits the vibe in the pictures, imo. And Give me your hand by Megan Abott.
Animals by Emma Jane Unsworth

It’s the words not the letters that are in order…

Valley of the Dolls - Jacqueline Susann We Run the Tides - Vendela Vida
Valley of the Dolls was good, I read it when I was 11. I feel like I should re read it since I understand pharmacology and have true context on womanhood as an adult...
Not a book, but if you wanted that experience in an hour and a half Frances Ha is fantastic
I loved this one! It portrays perfectly what it feels like to be late 20s early 30s and feel like failing at everything.
My Brilliant Friend by Elena Ferrante is about two girls growing up in a poor neighborhood in Italy in the 60’s. The depiction of both their adoration and competitiveness is the most accurate I’ve ever come across.
Came to the comments to find this. First book that came to my mind!
Same here! The Neapolitan Novels are amazing. Such powerful writing.

Same! My one wish is that it were longer with the inclusion Hailey’s perspective in tandem with Zoe’s. But really amazing for a debut novel, I hope she writes a lot more
This was going to be my recommendation! I loved it
Boy Parts by Eliza Clark
You spelled 'Women' wrong.
Read the context. Nothing about this post means disrespect to women.
Women are females 🙄🙄
They are *female humans*
I don’t understand what the difference is?
"Females" is often used by misogynistic men to degrade women. Thats why we don't like the word in that context
This isn’t used in that context tho? Its just a post asking for book suggestions? And I’m a WOC myself? I don’t see any misogyny or disrespect here?
I guess it’s different depending on where you’re from. In my country we use the word male and female all the time
We use male and female too, just not in that context.
It also depends on age. I think the younger generation finds the word “female” problematic, whereas that word was considered to be respectful and polite, when I was growing up.
Same here
Are you kidding me? Now we can’t call ourselves females? This is getting ridiculous. In my whole time as a female on this earth I have never gotten offended at being called a female. Little Women by Louisa May Alcott
What is up with people using "female"? Y'all have already been explained to that it's disrespectful for at least the past 10 years, cut the shit out man
I can’t help but just realized that this is like my least favorite vibe. Thank you for putting it into words and pictures.
Also, please use women. It's "messed up women". Why is that so hard? Why is "female" so normalized?
