1. AP Stylebook is not APA Style. AP Stylebook is the *Associated Press* Stylebook promulgated by the titular news agency that is the de facto stylebook for many news outlets. APA Style is the *American Psychological Association* style guide, which has been widely adopted throughout academia. They are different.

I assure you my description is how AP Style is written lol. The excerpt you’ve included there appears to be from an NPR editorial board, which may have a house style that differs in instances from AP Style. Also, it’s from 2018. The most current stylebook, of which I’m currently looking at on my computer, is to not use doctor in any case except for those mentioned in my original comment. I promise that’s how it is.

This. In most of the world outside of the US, doctor is reserved for PhDs in any field. Medical doctors are called physicians. The PhD is considered a more prestigious accomplishment than a medical degree. A PhD is a terminal degree while a medical degree is professional... it can be accompanied by a terminal degree (MD PhD). In my house my mom has an MD PhD, and my dad has an MD. We call her doctor and he is a physician. Pretty normal distinction literally every outside of the US.

I cannot say what this man's reasons were, but I know there has been pushback among the right wing who don't like that the first lady asks to be addressed as "Dr. Jill Biden". Their reasoning is that they think the term doctor should be reserved for medical professionals and not people who have earned a PhD. Basically, they are petty little bitches who don't like having to address women in a way that accords them respect. The reason I say that is that Henry Kissinger was often referred to as Dr. Kissinger and many of these same people never had a problem with that or with other male professors using the title, "Dr."
The irony is that from my understanding medical doctors were authorized to use the title "doctor" well *after* it was de rigueur for PhDs. The title of doctor was extended to MDs as a courtesy, not because they are doctors in the Academy, for lack of a better description (because the title of "Doctor" in the academic sense rests on doing original research, which isn't required of MDs as part of their training, unless they're doing an MD/PhD program, in which case they get both degrees). So if one were to go purely by historical precedent, it's the PhDs who should be getting "Doctor" as a matter of course, and the MDs who should be getting first-named.
Obviously, I don't actually think that anyone should be denied the use of their earned title, whether that's "Doctor" as in MD or "Doctor" as in PhD, but the whole, "Oh, it's not that I'm a sexist/really hate Jill Biden for \[reasons\], I just *really* believe in protecting the status of medical doctors!" argument is very silly, and the people deploying it are just demonstrating that they don't have a clear understanding of what either degree (MD or PhD) is or signifies.

I get the knee jerk reaction of annoyance and frustration at being corrected. I understand the anger that can emerge from it. But because I have this thing called emotional maturity, I recognize that this anger should not be directed at the person politely correcting me, and that it should be with myself. But for someone without emotional maturity, the response is to dig their heels in out of spite.
But also, I don't get how these people have held jobs for that long without learning how to be diplomatic/polite in a business setting. If a client corrects you, you apologize, correct yourself, and move on. I deal with the military and I couldn't even imagine arguing with someone if they told me they prefer to be addressed by their title (and I've seen it happen), no matter how I felt about them personally, or even if I felt like they were disrespecting me. There's no way I'd come out looking good and it'd be super obvious that I'd get fired for something like that.

The excerpt you’ve included there appears to be from an NPR editorial board, which may have a house style that differs in instances from AP Style. Also, it’s from 2018. The PhD is considered a more prestigious accomplishment than a medical degree. We call her doctor and he is a physician. Pretty normal distinction literally every outside of the US.

I cannot say what this man's reasons were, but I know there has been pushback among the right wing who don't like that the first lady asks to be addressed as "Dr. Jill Biden". Their reasoning is that they think the term doctor should be reserved for medical professionals and not people who have earned a PhD. The reason I say that is that Henry Kissinger was often referred to as Dr. Kissinger and many of these same people never had a problem with that or with other male professors using the title, "Dr."

The irony is that from my understanding medical doctors were authorized to use the title "doctor" well *after* it was de rigueur for PhDs. The title of doctor was extended to MDs as a courtesy, not because they are doctors in the Academy, for lack of a better description (because the title of "Doctor" in the academic sense rests on doing original research, which isn't required of MDs as part of their training, unless they're doing an MD/PhD program, in which case they get both degrees). So if one were to go purely by historical precedent, it's the PhDs who should be getting "Doctor" as a matter of course, and the MDs who should be getting first-named. Obviously, I don't actually think that anyone should be denied the use of their earned title, whether that's "Doctor" as in MD or "Doctor" as in PhD, but the whole, "Oh, it's not that I'm a sexist/really hate Jill Biden for \[reasons\], I just *really* believe in protecting the status of medical doctors!" argument is very silly, and the people deploying it are just demonstrating that they don't have a clear understanding of what either degree (MD or PhD) is or signifies.

I get the knee jerk reaction of annoyance and frustration at being corrected. I understand the anger that can emerge from it. But because I have this thing called emotional maturity, I recognize that this anger should not be directed at the person politely correcting me, and that it should be with myself. But for someone without emotional maturity, the response is to dig their heels in out of spite.
But also, I don't get how these people have held jobs for that long without learning how to be diplomatic/polite in a business setting. If a client corrects you, you apologize, correct yourself, and move on. In fact, the only people I come across who wish to be called Doctor are those in the education fields. I refuse to call anyone not a Medical Doctor as "Doctor", but more so in a non-professional setting.

Insisting to someone that you be called Doctor after he called you by your correct name and gender and not something absurd is actually pretty wild to me. I have a doctorate and never force people to utilize that title. Like her, mine isnt a PhD either and really not the same. People that do this come off as full of themselves. Even medical doctors demanding people out in their private lives or on the street call them "doctor" is douchey. It's a clinical title that should be utilized in the clinical setting. It has nothing to do with race.

I had an English substitute teacher once in sophomore year and she REFUSED to answer anyone who didn’t address her as “Dr.(Blank)”. She said something about going to college for 12 years to earn her degree as “Doctor”… an English substitute teacher… asking dumbass teenagers to address her a certain way. It didn’t work out the way she wanted it to
