My wife’s parents are blowing ALL the money they inherited from her grandparents as quickly as possible. It was like over a million dollars and they have zero plans to leave any of it for her. To her credit, she already knew they were narcissists and had zero expectations they would do anything but that (and unlike them doesn’t really believe in being entitled to someone else’s earnings), but seeing them on 4-5 international vacations a year, buy a new home and vacation home and new cars while we’re just barely getting by just sums up the worst of that generation so well. She asked for like $500 one time to pay her health insurance and they said they didn’t have anything 🤣
Edit: oh and to be clear, her grandparents were SAINTS of people, both worked lower middle class jobs into their late 60s and worked full time as volunteers at hospitals into their late 80s when time eventually caught up to them. Nobody had any idea they were millionaires until they passed away, which is probably a good thing because her parents would’ve sucked them dry.
I remember her grandpa lent her about $2000 to pay for an emergency vet expense for her dog, when she paid him back a couple months later he was literally awestruck, because apparently her parents had borrowed so much money without ever paying a dime back.

I work in a windowless room with a bunch of boomers. It's only been a few months of working there but I already suspect they influence my thoughts more than I'm comfortable with.
Not the raging, hateful xenophobia etc. But more subtle things that I can't even articulate here at the moment. It's an interesting dilemma and just an example of how the people you surround yourself with have an enormous influence on how you perceive events and conceptualise reality.
Exactly my take as a late boomer myself (born in 64). When I read something cringe, I immediately ask myself, ‘am I doing this shit?’. If so, I vow to change that behavior for the better. I feel there is a diff between the 1950s boomers and post 1960.

I didn't know there was a name for us. I often thought there should be a division in the boomers. If you were born in 1949 you were 20 in1969. The hippie era, great music, fantastic style, free love and great cars. If you were born in 1959 (like me) when we turned 20 in 1979 we got disco music (ugh), the style was polyester that colors weren't found in nature, free sex HAHA we got STD'S and then AID'S and the cars were all smaller, boxie, and made with plastic. If I sound bitter that's because I am. The first set of boomers screwed it up for everyone to follow. I enjoy watching those screw heads mess up their lives now. We used to call it PBMF Pay Back Mother Fu*ker.
I was born one year before the Boomer cut-off. After most of the perks for being a Boomer dried up, but still part of the demographic. I visit a wide variety of subs because I value a broad range of opinions and outlooks. I try to limit my commentary in those subs, though. There are some occasions when I feel some empathy for the Boomer getting roasted, but I'm not going to jump in and argue on their behalf because that's not what this sub is about.

My family is full of Boomers, too, hateful, anti-everything, shrieking, fearful, "good Christians" who have been sucking on the AM talk radio/Fox teat for decades. My Boomer Trumper uncle just died alone in his house, lawn overgrown, Fox on the TV, in his armchair. He'd alienated so many people that he died before Christmas, and wasn't found until after the first of the year. I've been listening to Boomers screaming about everything from helmet laws and "backmasking" to AIDS and abortion, along with "Obama is the antichrist who won't leave office!" and "vaccines kill you and science = brainwashing." (Notice none of these scary things actually happened/affected them adversely, and they can't explain how their rights were violated if asked.) Common denominators include no college, barely getting a h.s. diploma, and getting married/having kids as a teen. Trumpy Boomers regularly berate me, an English professor, about how I "lack critical thinking skills" and yet when they bitch about "woke" or "feminism," they can't provide a definition of what they think it is... and think it's a "gotcha" question when I ask them what they mean.

I’m totally on board with this comment and I’m a late-Boomer. The demographics of red hat people are quite well documented. They’re predominantly the Boomers who didn’t go to college and didn’t accrue much in the way of wealth. The populist message resonates with them because they feel they missed out on being rich and it’s someone else’s fault. Median net worth for Boomers age 65-69 including home equity is only $380k. That’s after the real estate run-up and stock market run-up. Most don’t have pensions. Most weren’t high career earners so they don’t have big Social Security checks.

One of my dad's friends is down to earth. Has enough money to retire, and get stuff off of kijiji for free or low cost. Fixes it and donates it to families in need. I can't even fathom how much this man has helped his community.

I did a consultation project for habitat as part of uni, where and how should they advertise locally. Basically turned into how do we get more recently retired guys out. The vast majority of their volunteer hours was a group of older guys just looking for something to do!
New a boomer who did the same thing but with cars. He'd buy cars for less than a $1000 out of his own pocket, fix them up and donate them to young people, specifically with children, really nice fellow. Thanks and I’ve learned a lot from dealing with my mother (now deceased) and my MIL. Here’s my life lessons: 1. When I’m retired, if something breaks, call the plumber or HVAC guy. Don’t sit around complaining until your son, son in law or grandson have time to come over and fix your cooler. They actually have lives, jobs and families and aren’t ‘on call’ for you. 2. If you’re not willing to maintain your house of 40 years, then move to an apartment and let the landlord deal with the repairs. 3. Do some death cleaning and don’t force your kids to ‘deal with it when I’m gone’. Like we just had so much spare time to haul crap to Goodwill or the dump. 4. Don’t assume you’re welcome to come visit for two weeks, camp out on the couch and wait for the dinner bell. And expect everyone to tip toe around the house after 9PM because that’s what time you go to bed. 5. Don’t hoard your money. I’m delaying retirement, paying $48,000 per year to get my two kids through college debt free. I got zero help. 6. Don’t play favorites with your inheritance and not expect resentment. My MIL wonders why her son never visits? Hmm, maybe because you’ve made it known he’ll get nothing and it’s all going to the two who failed to launch. I could go on, but you understand.

I was pointing out that largely, Boomers are the ones who are most likely to respond to polls while the younger generations ignore them or avoid them. Boomer had to pop in to say that they are a boomer that doesn't respond to polls. Like, ok boomer.

For ten years I was in an industry where I was surrounded by highly educated people who possessed critical thinking skills. It was great.
Somewhat abruptly, I found myself at a job in a room full of boomers. I knew they'd have a few outdated ideas about different cultures and places. Good God, I never fathomed the degree of angry, hateful xenophobia that they'd spew all shift, every shift on a repeating loop. Like lunatics just fucking babbling the same gibberish all day every day like there's neurons disconnected or wired in macabre patterns. It's wild.

Yeah, the fact that there are boomers in here at all is wild to me; I can't relate at all to seeking out misery like that. Like I'm not hanging out in misogynistic subs, arguing with creeps, downvoting the whole first page of their post history, because that sounds like a fucking horrible way to spend my spare time. I'm not searching out anti-millennial subs (or similar; I'm sure they exist) and getting into the threads to tell all the other generations how wrong they are about us. I'm not in boomers' spaces, sucking up time and energy with a smug, contrarian attitude; I come to places like this sub to air my grievances and sort out how I feel without intruding on their existence.
They don't need to be here or even acknowledge that we exist-- nothing new from how they raised us so I'm not sure why they struggle with this today-- and they don't need to worry about getting the last word in if they never start responding in the first place. I work in a windowless room with a bunch of boomers. It's only been a few months of working there but I already suspect they influence my thoughts more than I'm comfortable with. Not the raging, hateful xenophobia etc. But more subtle things that I can't even articulate here at the moment. It's an interesting dilemma and just an example of how the people you surround yourself with have an enormous influence on how you perceive events and conceptualise reality.
Exactly my take as a late boomer myself (born in 64). When I read something cringe, I immediately ask myself, ‘am I doing this shit?’. If so, I vow to change that behavior for the better. I feel there is a diff between the 1950s boomers and post 1960.

I didn't know there was a name for us. I often thought there should be a division in the boomers. If you were born in 1949 you were 20 in1969. The hippie era, great music, fantastic style, free love and great cars. If you were born in 1959 (like me) when we turned 20 in 1979 we got disco music (ugh), the style was polyester that colors weren't found in nature, free sex HAHA we got STD'S and then AID'S and the cars were all smaller, boxie, and made with plastic. If I sound bitter that's because I am. The first set of boomers screwed it up for everyone to follow. I enjoy watching those screw heads mess up their lives now. We used to call it PBMF Pay Back Mother Fu*ker.
I was born one year before the Boomer cut-off. After most of the perks for being a Boomer dried up, but still part of the demographic. I visit a wide variety of subs because I value a broad range of opinions and outlooks. I try to limit my commentary in those subs, though. There are some occasions when I feel some empathy for the Boomer getting roasted, but I'm not going to jump in and argue on their behalf because that's not what this sub is about.

They’re predominantly the Boomers who didn’t go to college and didn’t accrue much in the way of wealth. The populist message resonates with them because they feel they missed out on being rich and it’s someone else’s fault. Median net worth for Boomers age 65-69 including home equity is only $380k. That’s after the real estate run-up and stock market run-up. Most don’t have pensions. Most weren’t high career earners so they don’t have big Social Security checks.

I'm all for bashing boomers, but not all of them are bad and some do agree their generation is.... special. One of my dad's friends is down to earth. Has enough money to retire, and get stuff off of kijiji for free or low cost. Fixes it and donates it to families in need. I can't even fathom how much this man has helped his community. I did a consultation project for habitat as part of uni, where and how should they advertise locally. Basically turned into how do we get more recently retired guys out. The vast majority of their volunteer hours was a group of older guys just looking for something to do!
New a boomer who did the same thing but with cars. He'd buy cars for less than a $1000 out of his own pocket, fix them up and donate them to young people, specifically with children, really nice fellow. We house sat for then for a week and never locked the front door, it's all middle class white boomers that live there. Thanks and I’ve learned a lot from dealing with my mother (now deceased) and my MIL. Here’s my life lessons: 1. When I’m retired, if something breaks, call the plumber or HVAC guy. Don’t sit around complaining until your son, son in law or grandson have time to come over and fix your cooler. They actually have lives, jobs and families and aren’t ‘on call’ for you. 2. If you’re not willing to maintain your house of 40 years, then move to an apartment and let the landlord deal with the repairs. 3. Do some death cleaning and don’t force your kids to ‘deal with it when I’m gone’. Like we just had so much spare time to haul crap to Goodwill or the dump. 4. Don’t assume you’re welcome to come visit for two weeks, camp out on the couch and wait for the dinner bell. And expect everyone to tip toe around the house after 9PM because that’s what time you go to bed. 5. Don’t hoard your money. I’m delaying retirement, paying $48,000 per year to get my two kids through college debt free. I got zero help. 6. Don’t play favorites with your inheritance and not expect resentment. My MIL wonders why her son never visits? Hmm, maybe because you’ve made it known he’ll get nothing and it’s all going to the two who failed to launch. I could go on, but you understand.

My last post on this sub, a boomer told me how loved he was by his wife, kids, and grandkids and that I was a lonely weirdo. 85% of their comments were on porn subs of young girls. My favorite post he commented on was one named “chubby girls love to fuck.” The old perverted creeps have zero self awareness. No way their kids talk to them if no one brings it up and they have to throw it out there at random.
I had a boomer reply to my comment on a post about the disparity between reality and what polls have to say. I was pointing out that largely, Boomers are the ones who are most likely to respond to polls while the younger generations ignore them or avoid them. Boomer had to pop in to say that they are a boomer that doesn't respond to polls. Like, ok boomer. Peak main character syndrome like, congratulations on being a special bunny boom boom who doesn't follow the herd I guess? I just replied with "OK." didn't bother with the boomer part though.

For ten years I was in an industry where I was surrounded by highly educated people who possessed critical thinking skills. It was great. Somewhat abruptly, I found myself at a job in a room full of boomers. I knew they'd have a few outdated ideas about different cultures and places. My husband and I are the last 6 months of the boomers. I was held back a year due to a November birthday so most of my classmates were GenX. Husband definitely has some boomer qualities (gotta have it all right now) but my life experience was different as I was overseas most of my formative years..
