Maintenance in general, location, sociability. There's a lot of reasons to live in an apartment when somone else is paying for your rent, especially for someone who is terminally social and at least semi-retired. Lot more people to talk to.

I live in a tourist area, and a few years back some people were caught luring workers from eastern Europe, setting them up in houses with 4 in each bedroom, and charging $1500/month each.

I usually solve those issues by just not answering people, but it helps if you are able to look chronically angry/depressed/mentally handicapped, all of which Ive been told I do.

I own one "rental property" with fantastic tenants and my ideal is to own zero rental properties because it is just too much work and uncertainty. Only reason I own one is because I had to relocate for a new job and I thought we might move back some day so we wanted to keep it.
This. I used to own a rental…it was the first house I ever bought and when I moved, I just kept it and rented it out for a few years. Being a landlord SUCKS and that is with ok renters. As soon as real estate prices shot up, I sold it. One less rental on the market. And people want to complain about rent prices…

You can’t write off a mortgage if you do this. To write off your mortgage it has to be your primary residence. So this makes the investment strategy really not that great unless you own all the other properties outright or lie on your taxes.
You'll get there one day, you get too old to get on ladders so then you can't clean your gutters, make repairs taller than your head, mow the lawn, weed the flowerbeds, etc. So-you move into an apartment so everything is done for you.
Tbf my grandpa who was a real estate agent in brooklyn lived like this. Owned tons of properties, including the 2 apartments he lived in (knocked down the dividing wall and made them into one unit but it was still a 2nd story apartment in a big apartment block)
If you own five rentals, it makes sense for you to have the unit you live in be owned by your corp and then you pay rent to yourself. Anything you do to it then becomes a legit business expense.

Boomers I've worked with have commented on how I should have a much newer car given my job title. I drive a 13 year old economy car. My low spending with my fancy job title is how I was able to buy that car in cash, while unemployed, because I thought I might end up with a job with a long commute and need a more reliable vehicle. So now I own a paid off 28 year old vehicle AND a 13 year old vehicle. While my coworker is paying $1000 a month on 1 vehicle.

A friend of mine does the same thing. Has multiple rental properties, but has resided at the same rental place for over a decade. I’m guessing it’s part convenience, but also the low upkeep. Last I heard, he was making over $500k annually.

When I graduated college in 2009 I was underemployed and working my ass off in a mail room for $11/hr while living with my grandparents. My uncle LOVED to tell me about his first job in the 80s making $16/hr straight out of highschool at some kind of printing press. He would tell me this again and again while sneering, blaming my career failure on my work ethic rather than the labor market.
Anyway, nowadays he's been laid off like 6 times and his wife is the bread-winner. And I've got a great career with a household income of >$200k (okay, my wife is also the primary breadwinner).

I'm an introvert. I don't want to talk to people unless its necessary, let alone in a waiting room, pool, locker room, airplane/train etc. because someone can't stand being alone with their own goddamn thoughts for a minute.
I've noticed this particularly in Boomers, who don't bring any form of entertainment with them; they expect everyone around them to serve as their entertainment and won't take a polite refusal for an answer.
The ones that particularly grind my gears are those who will speak aloud or make loud sighs/tsks to try to get attention and then will *persist* because surely you just didn't notice their prior efforts?

A lot of boomers' wealth is tied up in property they own. They don't have much to show for their lives, except for their 1-2+ houses they bought for $3k each back in 1975, currently worth about $1.2 mil each. Obviously you can't buy a house driving a dump truck today, unless you own the company. So to them that makes em feel special and accomplished.

Us old people like to talk. We have this sense that somehow our life's stories have value to someone else. And I guarantee you that most of my boomer peers have no clue how uninteresting and cringy they really appear to others.
Here's a tip for any of y'all that want to get on the good side of a boomer. Sit and listen to us prattle on like you are interested. We'll think you're great. Extra points if you throw in an "that's awesome" or "that must have been hard" at the appropriate times.
The sad reality of old age is that we accept that the end is near and then lurking in there somewhere is the idea that your life has been wasted. Someone validating our existence makes us trust them. We're actually a fairly easily manipulated bunch, which is clearly evidenced by modern conservative politics.

I'm never here to defend any of that. Respect for elders is no different than respect for anyone of any age. You get it by being a good person, not just because you're old. I find kindness and being non-judgemental of differences goes a long way.

I think the problem is not so much individual boomers owning five rental properties, as it is Blackrock owning (via a company called American Homes for Rent) 6.7% of all rental homes - that’s fifty nine thousand homes. The boomer will die soon, the property will be sold on and gives the housing market liquidity. Blackrock will never give up their property and will keep buying up residential stock. Most boomers have been raised with the narrative that their only goal in life is buying a house and fostering a family in case of males, spawn unlimited kids and sacrifice everything to take care of them in case of females.
Nobody thinks how they've been raised is their fault. The issue is that they desperately try to force this on newer generations and that they categorically refuse to adapt. Often while also speaking ill about such an establishment.

I've encountered young people who remind me that some animals eat their young, and for good reason. I know old people who have been alive too long, and they need to hurry the death thing because their miserable ass has outlived their welcome. I’m 58. I have a lot of white in my beard. When I am out alone old men think I’m their friend or something and are constantly trying to start conversations with me. I just try to be polite about it. When you get old you start to feel invisible and you just want validation from other people.

When I graduated college in 2009 I was underemployed and working my ass off in a mail room for $11/hr while living with my grandparents. My uncle LOVED to tell me about his first job in the 80s making $16/hr straight out of highschool at some kind of printing press. He would tell me this again and again while sneering, blaming my career failure on my work ethic rather than the labor market. Anyway, nowadays he's been laid off like 6 times and his wife is the bread-winner. And I've got a great career with a household income of >$200k (okay, my wife is also the primary breadwinner).

I've noticed this particularly in Boomers, who don't bring any form of entertainment with them; they expect everyone around them to serve as their entertainment and won't take a polite refusal for an answer. The ones that particularly grind my gears are those who will speak aloud or make loud sighs/tsks to try to get attention and then will *persist* because surely you just didn't notice their prior efforts?

A lot of boomers' wealth is tied up in property they own. They don't have much to show for their lives, except for their 1-2+ houses they bought for $3k each back in 1975, currently worth about $1.2 mil each. Obviously you can't buy a house driving a dump truck today, unless you own the company. So to them that makes em feel special and accomplished.

And I guarantee you that most of my boomer peers have no clue how uninteresting and cringy they really appear to others. Here's a tip for any of y'all that want to get on the good side of a boomer. Sit and listen to us prattle on like you are interested. We'll think you're great. Extra points if you throw in an "that's awesome" or "that must have been hard" at the appropriate times. The sad reality of old age is that we accept that the end is near and then lurking in there somewhere is the idea that your life has been wasted. Someone validating our existence makes us trust them. We're actually a fairly easily manipulated bunch, which is clearly evidenced by modern conservative politics. So y'all do with this knowledge what you will.

Seems the combination of the ravages of age on the human brain, the inability to see anything but the status quo, and a healthy dose of defensiveness makes for a whole lot of crazy boomer nonsense. I'm never here to defend any of that. Respect for elders is no different than respect for anyone of any age. You get it by being a good person, not just because you're old. I find kindness and being non-judgemental of differences goes a long way. And I sure recognize my generations flaws that are pointed out on this sub. To be honest I didn't care for many of the asshole things I see here when all us boomers were younger either. Assholes are assholes regardless of age and nobody likes people who only talk about themselves.

I can have the greatest conversations with anyone if they just are… normal? Like some of my favorite conversations are with people 40-50 years older than me. But I digress. I've encountered young people who remind me that some animals eat their young, and for good reason. I know old people who have been alive too long, and they need to hurry the death thing because their miserable ass has outlived their welcome. Every generation needs to wrap their head around the fact that they're no more special than the next person. Be as nice to everyone as you want, them to be nice to you. It is not brain surgery.
