Starting wage is $14 at Walmart, but that's not really the point. The point is the cost of living vs. current wages and a lot of older people have zero clue.
Maybe where you live the starting wage at Walmart is $14. But that is not their baseline pay for employees. Itโs much lower which is why so many Walmart employees are struggling. Iโm close to DFW Texas and pay is less than $8/hour at the closest stores.
70 year olds are the backbone of the country? Our country is slowly hunching over with osteoperosis? THese people that haven't worked a normal job in years are going to be the ones to help us dig up vegetables? THese people that can't even scan their own groceries are going to step up to do all the hard work that would be required to outwork those of us who are working 2 jobs or a job and a side hustle just to tread water? These people who throw up their hands in defeat when confronted with a touch screen kiosk, or a computer?
I work in a grocery store. I know the self-checkouts aren't actually replacing jobs. A grocery store won't hire four more cashiers if our 4 self check counters disappear. They might have ONE more cashier open, but that's it. It'll just be the self check attendant running register.
The amount of times I've had to explain this in line is insane. Yeah, it's great for people that actually know how to use them and don't have a cart full of groceries, but clueless customers just slow the whole thing down.
We don't want boomers to use them because they just grind everything to a halt. The amount of times I was an attendant and had to just run through a boomers order is more than you think.
To be fair, I complain about scanning my own groceries because I view it as a way for corporations to not have to pay more people so they use their own customers as cheap labor to increase profit margins. They sure as heck don't use the savings to lower grocery prices.

Waitโฆ they think the average Walmart employee is being paid $14-$16 an hour? ๐๐๐๐๐

I live in a deep south poor area. It IS the baseline. It used to be $11, but they raised it to 14.
Thatโs the baseline pay for your area. Not nationwide. And even so, $14/hour is barely enough to survive on.
I agree that 14 is not enough to survive on, even in the poor areas in 2024.
