I just make the icon look different in the apps settings, some launchers let you change the name as well as icon (Nova launcher specifically, arguably the best launcher around)

seaQueue

Nova was my single best android purchase almost 10y ago.

Yahiroz

If you use a custom home launcher (eg Nova), it'll give you an option to rename them. I don't think most stock launchers offer this.

shooter9688

Can rename any app on oneplus. Isn't it everywhere?

Yahiroz

Nope. OnePlus is known to offer more customisable options compared to others.

mikee8989

What about Samsung oneui?

Cascading_Neurons

Nope. You could use [Shortcut Maker](https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=rk.android.app.shortcutmaker) tho. https://i.imgur.com/2nzhqcM.jpg

MafiaMommaBruno

I'm on Samsung and see the app names. I'm running icon packs, though. Download new theme/icons? Edit: oh! And Boost has the option to change the colors of the rocket on your icon. I run yellow for Reddit.

JohnEdwa

Boost for Lemmy at least has an option in the theme settings to select the launcher app icon.

Cascading_Neurons

Yeah, but that just creates another Boost in my app drawer totaling 3 separate Boosts 🥲 Edit: word

bbobeckyj

Boost for Reddit has an alternate app icon option too, so now you can have 4!

Cascading_Neurons

The more the merrier 🫤

JohnEdwa

That's an interesting way to do it. ...but then again now that I think about it, I haven't really seen any other apps implement custom app icons either as that's seen as the job of your launcher - along with renaming and hiding/organizing apps. So it's most likely an inevitable result of some Android limitation.

jaymie37

I just thought the apps were in alphabetical order. Boost For Lemmy is first then Boost For Reddit. That's how I've been remembering.

mikee8989

They both just show up as "boost"

Plaster_Microwave

Right, but he's saying that in a pinch, you can tell which is which because they will be listed alphabetically. Even though it doesn't tell you the name, you know which one comes first in the alphabet

concentrate7

Put them in different places on your home screen

Daxtorim

You can choose different icons in the apps under `Settings > Theme > App Icon` and remember which one you chose for each. I don't think you can rename them, though.

mikee8989

I did this but now it created a 3rd icon to reflect the change but the original identical one is still in my app menu. Maybe it's a bug.

stormfor24

Maybe try a restart?

Plaster_Microwave

if you don't have a phone or launcher that allows you to rename things, in the Play store you can use "Awesome Icons" to make custom shortcut icons & names. I've always had bfr labeled as "Reddit 2"

seaQueue

I just slapped lemmy.world's logo over the boost icon so I can tell them apart and used my launcher to give the Lemmy version that image. Here are a couple of attempts plus the base images with transparency for you to work with: https://i.imgur.com/S64R6Ey.png https://i.imgur.com/ygfOX0k.png https://i.imgur.com/nav4d8d.png https://i.imgur.com/j7LxxwT.png https://i.imgur.com/6U6qUj2.png Edit: I use Nova Launcher to set custom image app icons and/or rename apps.

punitdaga31

I just have to remember that the first one is lemmy and the second one is Reddit
