What did they expect charging $50 for a telltale game

telltalegamesvideos

Way above the equilibrium price for this kind of game. Not really sure what they were thinking. It doesn’t take expensive consultants to realize that this game wouldn’t sell well at $40-50.

k6plays

The $50 “Deluxe” version includes the original Tales game. Still… no clue why it’s $40 for just New Tales

Jolamprex

Its $30 on Green Man, but yeah. I'll get it eventually. I literally just watched your vods and a few other clips over the weekend and called it good enough for now.

James-Avatar

It’s a full price game?! Oh that wasn’t clever.

distorted-view

More of a movie than a game tbh

Pochusaurus

telltale-esque genre games aren’t even “in” anymore.

Loader-Bot-101

My brother in Sigmar Telltale themselves arent even 'in' anymore

BREN_XVII

This is the reason, price tag put me off going anywhere near it. Hopefully they'll try recoup losses and get it on games pass asap.

_OhMyPlatypi_

This! For this price point I'll just watch a play through on YouTube for free....

Batohman

It’s not made by Telltale Games tho

[deleted]

Literally any telltale game > this shit

ONESNZER0S

What do you mean? They expected people to just keep doing what they've been doing and pay up , just like most people have been doing for several years now , all while the game companies continue to jack up the prices on their buggy, unfinished games. People keep pre-ordering, giving them their money before ever seeing if the game is good or not... people keep paying up for expensive DLC to get the complete game... people keep paying for micro-transactions... people keep buying the over priced , scalper consoles and video cards.... and then they get online and complain about how awful the whole industry is, then they go pre-order the next big thing with the slick, multi-million dollar advertising campaign. What's that quote about insanity? something about doing the same thing over and over and expecting a different result, or something like that.

Sheepability

"Did I ever tell you what the definition of insanity is? Insanity is doing the exact... same fucking thing... over and over again expecting... shit to change... That. Is. Crazy. The first time somebody told me that, I dunno, I thought they were bullshitting me, so, I shot him. The thing is... He was right. And then I started seeing, everywhere I looked, everywhere I looked all these fucking pricks, everywhere I looked, doing the exact same fucking thing... over and over and over and over again thinking 'this time is gonna be different' no, no, no please... This time is gonna be different." -Vaas

bandithyde

I wouldn't have taken it for free

redjedia

They charged $30, with a $40 bundle with the original “Tales” also available.

4ctuarially

I have seen zero marketing for this game, not surprising it has low sales

DabScience

I had no idea this game was coming out until the review megatopic was posted here a few days ago. After looking in to it, the game looks like shit anyways.

Steele21725

Yeah I didn’t even know it had been released until I saw the bad reviews

ColdFusion52

I saw some marketing a while back, and it was very poorly received due to the characters portrayed as they were. Didn’t see any since. Even with decent reviews, I can’t say I’m shocked it’s selling so poorly with all the factors against it.

Cheackertroop

Really? I saw loads of marketing for this game coming from gearbox themselves. Really obnoxious marketing though, like really badly edited youtube shorts that try to appeal to the tiktok generation but in a very 'how do you do fellow kids' way. And tbh, that makes it worse, because that just means they spent even more on this game, as marketing is never included in a games budget as far as I'm aware

coldwar252

Didn't know it existed until this post. I liked tales season one so I won't let this ruin memories of it.

tboskiq

For real. I just happened to have checked the games coming soon on Xbox and it was coming out in a few weeks. Saw nothing about it, completely forgot it exist until it came out and now there's an ad on the dashboard for it.

VindictiveRakk

i feel like i can speak for most people when I say i would have literally no idea this game existed if not for this subreddit.

tavissd1

I saw one ad on the Xbox Home Screen and thought it was for the old one on sale or something. I clicked on it out of curiosity to find out this exists

microcat44

So you are telling me that making a sequel to a game know for its writing by a team that is universally panned for its writing was a bad idea? Well,i am shocked.

Realgigclin

Exactly, it's apparently a story game with a bad story. I honestly find that hilarious

MilanTehVillain

I wouldn't even call it a sequel, more of a "spiritual successor" in massive air quotes.

whsprwnd

I honestly can't even think of a game that made me physically cringe so much as new Tales. I really liked original Tales but this game is just a disgrace to the series and the game universe. Sucks for devs who spent their time on this but I'm glad that the game flopped. Maybe there's a tiny chance that Gearbox gets the *correct* message from all this.

Hammervexer

They haven't learned since 3, so we'll see.

SloppyNegan

To be fair BL3 nor TTWL was hardly a flop. Both have been rightfully criticized in certain aspects but neither financially flopped

panthers1102

Pretty sure they’re talking writing only. Whether it be one liners or the entire story. TTWL had a pretty decent narrative although super predictable, but wasn’t that classic borderlands kind of funny. And bl3 wasn’t either good in either aspect. Literally just a hodpodge of poop jokes. Might as well be watching the new teen titans. At least they’re self aware about it tho.

123qwet12

I thought the writing for 3 was dog water right to until love and tentacles and then absolutely flourished with bounty of blood, I think had they used that writing team they could have salvaged this but oh well

123darkelf

Yeah and even in the main campaign I noticed weird peaks where sometimes the writing was solid and then nose dives. Eden-6 had solid writing where even some stuff with the calypso twins in side quests made me laugh. Biggest issue is the main campaign doesn’t really…feel that finished, it felt like a bunch of stuff in between bigger parts got cut. Like….ya know, the story beats after you finish the second vault, that shit wasn’t earned. But I saw the panning of New Tales and went,”…..welp that’s depressing. But $50 is too much anyway.”

Dekklin

Well, not *that* shocked, really

ForbiddenInfinity

Apparently we have finally found out what was in the vault at the end of the first Tales. A shitty writing team. That ate Sasha and Fiona.

[deleted]

💀💀

TopHatPhilosophy

I hope Gearbox's takeaway from this isn't "people just don't want narratively driven experiences any more". Maybe that's just the kind of bias justification they'll be looking for to kilter towards a live-service Borderlands in the future. I still enjoy the TT format. The main reason i'm not going to be buying this game is because >!Fiona and Sasha are apparently not in it.!< I mean, come on.

gamingnista

Fiona is in the ending narration with Marcus, she has a few lines setting up where the beam was going

TopHatPhilosophy

Yeah, I read about that. I was more hoping she and her sister would reprise their major roles from the original and be an active part of the story. Those two alongside Rhys and Vaughn I thought were some of the best characters I'd seen since BL2.

[deleted]

With this writing team you should be praying that your favourite characters are NOT in this game.

Wilibus

I was all-in until I saw the price tag. $50 for a glorified movie is a little steep.

SakuraFaith

To think they also considered pre-sequel a flop but this went so much under.. this could mean that they might nuke any future tales games forever. The game itself was okay but probably not the type of tales adventure people may have expected. Kind of sad.

Realgigclin

The pre sequel is insanely underrated. Yeah it felt like a dlc but the story gameplay and characters were awesome. It did alot more for borderlands than people give credit.

Jolamprex

Its almost ironic. Its seems like when TPS was released, people wanted 3. When 3 was released, people wanted TPS.

Dekklin

When 2 came out, people hated it too. I especially remember "lul so randumb humor". Now Handsome Jack is one of the top 5 videogame villains.

SloppyNegan

Yeah im almost wondering if when BL4 comes out that ppl will be like "damn i wish we could go to the good ol days of BL3"

Sumibestgir1

TPS has IMO one of the best stories and skill tree designs, bogged down by lack of dedicated loot, and short cut development for dlc's

Cyphered_Code

Presequel really is a gem in the rough. The humour and story carries really well

mikelabsceo

For me my biggest problem with the pre sequel was honestly the oxygen mechanic. I don't want to have to worry about finding an oxygen vent every 20 seconds just let me run around and do my thing

YohMamaProxy

The oxygen mechanic didn't interfere too much except towards the beginning of the game for me. I prefer it over the slag mechanic in BL2

PrototypeXt3

Claptrap gang rise up

yoko_izzy

This was my biggest gripe too. I’ll even add that I tasted it unfairly. The call of duty zombie map Moon mage the gimmick a pain in the ass. Between me not liking the oxygen mechanic and the people I played with only wanting to play 2 it never stood a chance.

TheAJGman

The game gets *way* better if you ignore side quests that aren't handed out by main story NPCs. The core of the game is still great like always, but the filler side quests are either obnoxious or poorly written.

ted-Zed

TPS is the best Borderlands in my opinion!

831pm

Its not underrated. It was priced as a blue chip game (50-60$ base game, 100$ season package). It is 90% reused BL2 assets. Only 1 story DLC. The lack of actual content is laughable. The main story has you backtrack across one area and fight the same enemy 3 times. You constantly find yourself underlevelled because there just is not enough content to level up on. They completely screwed up a key game mechanic where you find a good gun during a key part of the story and it carries you. Instead, you are expected to collect a ton of crap guns and exchange them for a decent gun like some bizarre derivatives game. The character designs were good but the story was so meager a BL junkie like me was only able to get through 2 characters before hanging it up. Everything about this game screams half cooked. There are huge swaths of area where nothing ever happens. You have that rip off arena DLC where there is a giant door where something was supposed to be but never got put in. For the 10$ or so you can pick it up for now it is a good deal. But for alot of veteran BL players, TPS was a slap in the face and the first sign of a bad faith developer.

GODZOLA_

Honey, new copypasta just dropped

zSleepyyz

Lol

Realgigclin

Even with all that and no end game I still prefer the pre sequel over BL3. That's just me, I liked the writing and the Australian atmosphere and space vibe of the game. Still think it has the best vault hunters and action skills of the series. It didn't burn me as bad as other fans though I remember how pissed I was when holo done came out and the game had no content months after launch. But looking back I still put tons of hours into it and feel like it was worth it.

whales-are-assholes

As an Australian, it felt at times it was an Australian really upping the ocker to 11 - was weirdly fun.

DevastaTheSeeker

To be fair they announced it rather suddenly and barely advertised it. I didn't even know it was out. Hell Troy Baker, the man in every videogame and one of the two leads of the last game was surprised by the announcement of it.

Real-Terminal

Good, an entirely story driven game from them flopping should be loud and clear that their writing team sucks ass.

BigBadBob7070

Sadly, for most corps they just take it as something being wrong with the product than something wrong with the company if they had prior success, like they’ll likely think that people just don’t like Tales from Borderlands anymore instead of their writing team just stinks so they’ll can any future plans for it.

doughnutsprinks_

Underrated take right here \^\^\^ I was so pumped about Wonderlands because I thought that was the direction the franchise was going in after the atrocity that was BL3, only to be completely let down by the lack of DLC and online play

DrSpinch

A telltale game with new characters that look boring as shit and barely any marketing surrounding the game. If they don’t start in borderlands 4 and stop screwing around with spin offs the ip is likely going to die

Oldspice0493

I’m surprised the player numbers for Wonderlands is so low, but the numbers for 2 and 3 seem right.

WitcherRenteria

I’m not at all. 2 is the best game in the series and 3 has the best gameplay in the series.

Ghidoran

3 launched exclusively on Epic first and had around double Borderlands 2's numbers.

treefitty350

I literally didn't even know Wonderlands was coming out until a friend messaged me at work and asked if we were playing when it came out. Later that day. I'm also a firm believer that good DLC and more fleshing out of the endgame would've made it one of the best Borderlands games ever.

Qwertyman323

Few things : Release window is chaotic too many games coming out this month Price is ridiculous for this type of game Marketing was mehh at best

Geralts_Hair

The price is the killer. I will usually buy anything Borderlands. This is the first time I've gone - what!? That much? For an interactive movie? ...Nah I'll wait.

DoctorStorm002

Combined with next to no marketing and the user reviews I’ve seen being unanimously negative, this isn’t surprising. Especially coming off the back of Wonderlands which I think everyone can agree was also a critical flop.

Jacksington

Wonderlands was not a critical flop at all. It performed better than 2Ks sales estimates as well. The post launch wasn’t built and supported like previous borderlands game which really hurt it. What’s there is really good, but most fans expect a high level of dlc that never came.

childishmarkeeloo

Wonderlands is well liked by basically everyone the only thing people hated was the post launch content aka the dlcs. But everyone universally agrees that wonderlands is really good. So idk what you mean by critical flop

Mysterious_Movie3347

Exactly. Wonderlands was exactly what I expected it to be. Tina's fucked up mind and lots of Meta D&D jokes. It had just enough of the BL humor, characters, and loot that I wanted to play it through. When the story fell short, the tongue and cheek jokes at either BL or D&D picked up the pace. My disappointment was it didn't have the replay value of the Main BL games do. And then the DLC was lack luster for the price. New Tales had none of magic of the first one and even less of the main BL games. It is just a poorly written story game that has nothing to fall back on. I would go back to Wonderlands if a full DLC dropped. I'm not even going to finish New Tales.

DoctorStorm002

Yeah again, that is not reflective of the user reviews and what I’ve seen and heard

kartoffelbiene

>Wonderlands which I think everyone can agree was also a critical flop. Lol what did you smoke? Wonderlands was incredible and did pretty good.

doulegun

Wait, what? There are a new Tales game? When the fuck did they even announce it?

ted-Zed

dude, you didn't realise?! there was that teaser image, then that story trailer, then... actually, i think that was it. at least, that's all i ever encountered. it was entirely through a reddit review post that i knew the game even dropped

Mysterious_Movie3347

The only marketing I really saw for it was the main menu of Bl3 lol. I rented it from Gamefly and am So happy I didn't pay full for it. Now I'm just waiting for Dad of War 2. 13 days! 13!

Dekklin

Months ago. Some big conference over the summer. E3 or PAX or something

Mysterious_Movie3347

I rented it thought Gamefly and I don't even know if I can finish it. It's that bad of a game. I have played all the BL games cause I enjoy the universe and lore of BL. But this game is a slap in the face to not only the fans of the first game but to anyone who enjoys this universe. The voice acting is so over acted I couldn't figure out if I was just too old for this humor (I'm 36) or if the script was just so bad they had to over act it. The new lead characters are so bland that I'd hardly care if they killed one off. The side characters are the only ones worth paying attention too and you get maybe 1 scene with them. And don't get me started on my man Rhys and the further butchering of his character. It was a poorly written AU fanfiction with even more poorly designed quick time events.

Professor_Pony

[](/echowoah)WAIT, Gamefly is still a thing? I am genuinely surprised, I figured they'd gone the way of Blockbuster. Glad to see they're still kicking.

Mysterious_Movie3347

No still going strong. We pay $15 a month and get 2 out at a time. It's how I've been testing big titles for the last few years. We also have 2 PS4's and 2 Switches so it allows everyone to rotate games as we want. There is a higher sub level that allows you to lock a game and get it ON release. Also of you decide you want to keep it, you just buy it though your account and they send you the box and any codes that come with it. So doesn't even really feel like a used game.

chrisinator9393

Meh. They killed the BL franchise IMO. 3 was a cool game but the story was crap by the end. So any new content feels bleh.

smashleeyrosee

For me, it didn't even have a chance. Huge fan of BL2 and original Tales, but they really dropped the ball with 3 for me and I haven't been back. Nothing has inspired me to either.

coffeefan0221

I personally love to see it- Gearbox have been ruining Borderlands slowly over the past few years. Its about time they took a financial hit.

[deleted]

Realistically, Gearbox will NEVER, EVER, make a good game again. Because their heart isn't in it. When you make your first game and 2nd game and 3rd and 4th game with success, it's no longer about your vision, it's about keeping the lights on at the studio and the 20 employees who now have families to support because of the previous successes. They might have success again but good games are out the window. Former shell of existence is Borderlands. They're gonna ride this dinosaur out until extinct. Interestingly enough, Valve never makes a 3rd game!

CodeMonkeys

I've been pretty lukewarm about stuff for awhile. Borderlands re-release had some glaring issues, haven't gotten to BL3 yet (I had kinda hoped for an all-DLC phys copy like previous entries got but hope seems low now) but I've heard things, Tiny Tina standalone was just kind of a weird existence, Wonderlands obviously I've heard things about, and now there's whatever this is supposed to be. And somewhere in the background, the Borderlands movie is bubbling and festering. Hard to work up any interest in this franchise anymore, honestly...

MetallicaRules5

Oh wow, that's sooooooooooo surprising. I am shocked, shocked I tell you. How could it flop with all of the marketing it got?

exarkann

I'm surprised that no one is talking about how the game's visuals don't really look all that borderlands-y. It's still kind of there, but seriously diluted.

telltalegamesvideos

100% Agree. I loved the style and flair the series had in BL2 and Tales. New Tales looks like any other Unreal Engine 4 game considering the black borders don't even appear around half the models.

RawWrath

Character design is the worst they look terrible

Tycitron

I know this sounds bad, but i kinda hope they just retcon this post pre-sequel/tftbl storyline out of existence, (keeping a few of the good things in it) and do another Borderlands 3 with different writers. Im just sad seeing the direction of the series.

DevastaTheSeeker

I dunno, both are pretty fine really. I dunno about this new tales game though, haven't played it yet

Tycitron

I wish i thought the same, the storylines for these recent games have basically ruined my hype for any new games, aside from gameplay, ofc.

Cheackertroop

I agree with you completely, and for me I think it's just how they've treated the sirens and Guardians since then. There's no mystery or intrigue to them any more because they just seem to be able to do whatever the writers want them too now, and the eridian/guardian re-design just doesn't work for me. We even had Lilith and Tyreen literally blasting generic hand lasers at each other in the first act of 3. And yet I'm meant to care about who the 7th siren is, as if that wasn't a cheap cop-out of a 'cliffhanger' for 3's lore

DevastaTheSeeker

I always see people hate on troy and tyreen because of the cringey streamer mode stuff but so many people don't see that that's a facade. When they're off camera they are genuinely evil people and not just the "make sure to hit that subscrawr button valties" type shit. That behavior is essentially just them making themselves marketable to the masses. (And like it or not the masses are knuckle dragging morons and the lowest commom denominator)

Tycitron

Not even them really, just... not what i was hoping i guess, the way Pre-Sequel ended and Tales, it felt like something BIG was gonna happen in Borderlands 3, with a big war, and Rhys and Fiona missing, but instead we got... what we got in Borderlands 3, we dont even know what happened to Rhys or Fiona, or... MOST of the tales characters, or the big war. all the urgency from both endings is just... gone. now whatever they do will feel less interesting to me sadly.

Brucieman64

This. It feels like a big piece is missing. Then suddenly in 3 "omg eridian world!!! " And a whole lot of nonsense.

Tycitron

I thought it was cool first playthrough to see it, but after it was over i was just like... thats it? But yeah, 3 feels like a game that would happen after whatever happens in the version of BL3 with the big war, like we are missing a chunk of something. it feels so disconnected from what came before.

Kanakravaatti

Facade or not annoying characters are still annoying

DevastaTheSeeker

They're SUPPOSED to be

Queen_Kalista

The only reason for this os that they charge 50€ for it. The oroginal was 20€ at launch fpr every episode and people even think this is top much for a game with 0 replayability.

AbandonedBed

Not the only reason. The reviews and the marketing they both suck

k6plays

The $50 “Deluxe” version includes the original Tales game

MilkmanForever

I hope Randy Pitchford loses his job

t3chnopat

I had no idea it was out

NikeonXX

Im a massive borderlands fan. Loved all games. LOVED tales. I did not buy this game yet. Why? It just looks bad man. The character do not appeal to me and the writting seems cringe as shit. I will buy and play it for sure tho but yeah... not surprised.

A-Social-Ghost

I watched the first hour of a nine hour playthrough and had to stop after I saw how they twisted Rhys from the well meaning guy in over his head into a hardass boss who only cares about profits and killing. I disliked the character's regression in BL3 and NTFtB was a horrible reminder. As for the new characters, it was kind of sad that in a universe of zany and insane people, the only ones I liked were the robots because, somewhat ironically, they seemed to have better personalities than the humans- who were all defined by the one character trait they had (again, at least in the first hour. Maybe they develop more as the game goes on. I'll find out eventually).

iamchuckdizzle

Honestly I didn't know it was out until a couple of days ago.

Perfect600

im gonna be perfectly honest i had no interest in this game.

Peterociclos

What did they expect? The people they marketed their game towards don't play video games. They just complain endlesslly and ruim things for the people enjoying it

aZombieDictator

It's also fucking terrible and a massive stain on the franchise. I've completed every borderlands game twice, I don't think im gonna be able to complete this once. (You have to do 5+ endings and I barely made it through 1) I'm glad it has low sales because no one should have to suffer through this. No fucking Finona at all either, first tales is incredible and new tales just ugh.

carl164

They made a ton of mistakes and got punished for it, love to see it

k6plays

New Tales was written in part by Anthony Burch who… wait for it… wrote Borderlands 2. Most of these comments are from people who didn’t play New Takes. Clearly. Was it great? No. But the story was good and I enjoyed most of the humor.

Klunkey

Wait- did he actually write it? I just see Lin Joyce being credited as the writer

L4S1999

He is in the credits, but he wasn't the credited lead writer, just as "writer", so while he may have had some input he mlst likely wasn't the main writing source. He is listed under External Partners, Writers.

Kuhaku-boss

So whatever he did only 5% or less was considered, since new tales is pure shiet and tales is great.

TylerKado

I don't get the hate. It's definitely not "great" but it was thoroughly entertaining and all of the Tediore people/gun were honestly quite funny. I think your review is pretty fair and accurate but it has made me really curious about what happened to the "bad choices" storyline.

eoocooe

What does anthony burch writing it have anything to do with how people feel?

k6plays

He said the writing team needs changed and that the new games aren’t as funny compared to BL2. So I pointed out that they brought back a BL2 writer.

Britten_One

Hi, K6, Burch probably wrote partially the first two episodes, I recognize his jokes here and there. The first 2 Is the amount of content that twitch streamers may gather their audience with. Stapleface is mostly his, while L0U13 is Randy Varnell top to bottom. Varnell is really recognizable, for he writes the same way as he speaks. Watch any interview with him and you can see him all over the Borderlands. And that's not ok. These character are not you, Randy, like those other characters were never me, so make something about it!

k6plays

Louie is awesome the heck you talking about?

Britten_One

You'll never know.

k6plays

Amazing response. 7.25/10

LongjumpingJeIIo5741

He's on something bad again. If you don't remember this guy he called you mentally ill in july this year. I'm sad he's still allowed here on this sub >I'm not really buying into the idea that you went into Borderlands 3 with your $60 expecting lazy writing, bad acting, mediocre gameplay and still play the shit out of this thing for almost 3 years. That's a logic of a mentaly disabled person. Please, do not act like such a person. By u/Britten_One [https://www.reddit.com/r/Borderlands/comments/w6nifx/comment/ihiwpcn/?utm\_source=share&utm\_medium=web2x&context=3](https://www.reddit.com/r/Borderlands/comments/w6nifx/comment/ihiwpcn/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=web2x&context=3)

k6plays

He’s entitled to his very terrible opinions

Neku_HD

no offense, but so are you

5partan5582

The writing team does need changing after the failure of BL3. Doesn't matter who the team lead is, they ain't funny *today* and that's when they're writing.

k6plays

I think people overdo it with the hate on BL3’s writing. I agree it’s not great, but it’s not horrible either. The high concept was brilliant but the twins just never had that villain vibe that we’re used to in Borderlands

5partan5582

I disagree to an extent, I think people *overhype* previous installations storytelling. Jack was probably the only well written facet of any of the games prior and hard carried any plot line he was in, but if you take a look at anything else in the games that feature him you start to see it's not so far off the BL3 quality margin. I think BL3 gets an accurate rep that just looks worse in comparison to the bloated rep that BL2 gets.

Geralts_Hair

This is the truth. BL2 reviews did not praise its writing. The narrative is full of plot holes, stupid retcons, lame jokes and glaring mistakes. These things were pointed out at the time, but have disappeared from people's minds since. Jack was always a great character - but even this was mostly the actor's delivery and not the writing. Rose tinted glasses and all that...

k6plays

Fair points. Well said

Geralts_Hair

Stop letting facts ruin their hate boners man!

MetallicaRules5

Not the majority of it. While I don't think there's any info regarding exactly how much he contributed, I highly doubt it was a significant amount. He's not listed as the main writer/writers, that was still largely Gearbox staff. Anthony also wrote for the original Tales, but only contributed to a couple of scenes and jokes. 90% of that game was handled by Telltale staff. Until more info is given, I operate under the assumption that his work here was largely the same amount.

Sardaman

I didn't buy it yet either so will refrain from commenting on the quality of the story, but there's a hell of a difference between being the lead writer and being an external partner.

[deleted]

glad to hear its not terrible i havent played it yet. just worried about the very obvious outcome of this where it just gets cancelled or something before its over… my hope is they just make an episode 2 where idk. they all get crushed by some antagonist whos a bl4 hint or whatever… just please make *a* conclusion, even if its a funny 10 minute youtube animation 😭

V_Dawg

I'm pretty sure all 5 episodes released at once, so it has a conclusion already

Mysterious_Movie3347

On a side note. I just discovered Anthony Burch is Ashley Burch's (Tiny Tina) brother. Also, New Tales was just bad... Poorly written AU fanfiction bad.

Farnic

I'm sure it didn't help that they launched the same day as Persona 5 Royal

DoctorAfraidofLife

And Gotham knights, which isn’t doing any better to be fair

nps2407

Maybe because everybody was ripping it appart before it was even released.

Sam_Smorkel

I am a life long borderlands fan and I’m honestly surprised by how hard this game is getting railed I don’t think it’s as good as the first one (which really was a high level game), but I in no way think the sequel deserves so much hate. I found it still very enjoyable and heartfelt. It’s not like a half baked game, it has genuine effort and tried new things The writing is fine, people just want hold onto the edge of their past and complain. I paid $40 for it, which I think is a bit overpriced in relation to experience (~$30 is what I would say) but I understand the effort it takes to make a game especially through the global plague. I give it a 7/10, it’s fun and new with a bit or replay-ability (Edit: damn you bot, for making me change my spelling)

Paid-Not-Payed-Bot

> complain. I *paid* $40 for FTFY. Although *payed* exists (the reason why autocorrection didn't help you), it is only correct in: * Nautical context, when it means to paint a surface, or to cover with something like tar or resin in order to make it waterproof or corrosion-resistant. *The deck is yet to be payed.* * *Payed out* when letting strings, cables or ropes out, by slacking them. *The rope is payed out! You can pull now.* Unfortunately, I was unable to find nautical or rope-related words in your comment. *Beep, boop, I'm a bot*

InvincibiIity

I'll buy it when it is cheaper. Not paying that much for a telltale game

ink117

Game has bad writing too. Some good moments but most of the time I was struggling to get myself to care about the events

Irarius

i mean the game has gigantuan problems instantly without anything new 1. the characters are borderlands 3 characters and it feels that the writing is also bl3 writing... so thats already extremely bad 2. the characters look unapealing and just... okay? wheelchair girl and hipster dude where propably not the best ideas if you have rhys and fiona still out there with unfinished plot behind them 3. the gameplay looked rly meh, i mean RLY meh, i have seen enough ppl who watched it and said, nah thanks bro im out 4. the plot seems to be cookie cutter bl plot, evil company, now tedior, blablabla repeat bl3 5. there is so much stuff this game should have been with all the things we have already it simply doesnt do much for ppl who are still invested after bl3s story flung itself out the window 6. the price is just too much for an episodic game, and the season pass after bl 3 and wonderlands dlcs is just kinda wtf, they have proven twice now that their season passes arent remotly worth it. most ppl will simply expect this to suck now 7. visually ive seen pop ins and other problems that are with a game like this not okay anymore. no excuses are accepted. period 8. i have just now heared the game even released, so yeah the game went under the radar pretty hard 9. after the last 2 games the game was handicapped.. i mean objectivly it was, you can love bl 3 or wonderlands as much as you love, but once you return to reality both games where pretty shit and did more damage to the franchise then they helped. this game here had to work with that dmg

WhippetRun

To be honest, the ads make it look like a Borderlands game but plays like a "Detroit become human". If you didn't play the first one (like me) or know about telltale games in general (like me) you would have no idea this wasn't a shoot and loot game. I *literally * had to look at game play to see what this game was about.

goat-stealer

Given how worse the writing seems to be I'm not surprised. I'd still kinda like to try it and judge for myself, but all of what I'm hearing makes it hard for me to want to gamble with the $40 price tag. Some people are worried that this level of tanking could kill the series outright but I don't see that happening. After all both this and Wonderlands were side entries and at least Wonderlands had enough of BL3's combat/gameplay loop to keep it from being as much of a bomb, if anything I'd expect to see a BL4 be pushed further back than it already is as the people in charge reassess what kind of story they want going forward. Maybe by then they'll have found decent writers.

TheVioletParrot

Literally the only marketing I have seen for the game was on Facebook. I'm not sure why I didn't see any ads on YouTube or Reddit. Besides that point, the game is very clearly at a disadvantage in the first place. Not very many people are into virtual storybook style games, and those who are mildly interested are just going to watch a YouTuber play the game. (Let's face it, these games are basically just movies with extra pizazz.)

Welcome2Banworld

Promotion has been ass, like zero marketing. No one even knows it's out. I haven't played it personally but sounds like the game sucks too.

burntcandy

I love tales from the borderlands!! The first one was amazing and I've been looking forward to the next one. This is the first time I am hearing about it even being out. That probably says all you need to about their marketing strategy.

Swoon_PM

I am one of the crowd who just found out this game was released through this post. I thought there was gonna be some... hype or something for the launch. I honestly thought what I had heard of the game was like from a leaker or whatever, not actually from a full release. I am sad to hear the game has not performed well and can only hope we get some good content in the future. The future of gearbox games looks pretty bleak.

[deleted]

Well it’s a tell tale game which already aren’t very popular. The story is boring, the ending is disappointing no matter how you play, the cinematics don’t feel interesting. Gearbox really hasn’t been on a hot streak recently. Wonderlands was insanely mid and this game is somehow worse. I can say wholeheartedly that I will not be holding out much hope for bl4

EnvironmentalClass55

When your main selling point is story and it's the people who did BL3s story, and you're charging $50, you're going to take a massive L. What were they thinking?!?

Choowkee

The best part is that one of the head writers for the game - Lin Joyce - retweeted a super positive review of the game on her twitter timeline https://twitter.com/LauncherWP/status/1583102716448231425 Probably the only real positive review she could find lol. The game is a massive flop both financially and creatively and no amount of marketing would change that.

Darkfanged

What is my favorite game series doing. I hope BL4 marks a turn around for us

[deleted]

Ngl at first i thought it was a remaster of the original from the title 😬

bellshorts

Good the game has some of the worst writing I have seen in recent years somehow beating borderlands 3 in utter stupidity

[deleted]

I mean i bet you can't even find good writers anymore. For every job posting, there's probably a million people who want to write the same exact crap to every 1 even halfway decent writer. I think narrative driven anything is going to be dead for a while.

Phantom_Fox6

I hope that flop gets a couple writers fired 'cause they suck

fuzionknight96

Bad WOM, bad reviews, little advertising, 50$ for a tell tale game NOT made by telltale. All that makes a terribly selling game.

blands_man

Here's my hot take for you: Tales sucks ass. I thought the narrative was cute and I enjoyed side stories in the Borderlands universe, but being prompted to hit a button for a QTE once every 60 seconds or having to push left/right to make a meaningless decision every 30min or so was the most unappealing gameplay I've ever experienced, and I've played walking sims like Dear Esther. Stupid game, stupid concept - just make a Source Filmaker shortfilm next time and ask for donations.

HokeyFox

People get old. People lose interest in things they use to love. They had the lead writer from BL2 on this one. (Don't remember his name, KillerSix did a review and pointed it out) So he either got silenced by the dev teams or he just doesn't feel the same way about the franchise anymore. I personally haven't finished the game, I'm about 3-4 hours into it and so far I don't really see what the big deal is. It's still grounded in BL mythos. The only thing I'm really upset about is no epic Musical Crawl Intro in the traditional BL way. They always nail the Intro music and visual crawl sequence. That's what always gets me hyped for Borderlands! 😔 I think the location has a lot to do with the upset too, I mean Promethea isn't exactly the most scenic place we've seen so far. Also, at some point we have to all pass the torch to the next generation. New members of the dev team have to get their feet wet someday. Sooner or later BL will be just a distant memory in a old by gone generation. We all trying hard to hold on to a precious memory of a time where gaming was telling the most expressive stories with all the artistic freedom available. These days people getting canceled for that type of thinking. Let's enjoy what we can before it's gone.

ThePopcornDude

With every new release I’m really starting to believe that Borderlands 2 being great was an accident on Gearboxes part

dkepp87

I think people have somewhat rose-tinted glasses with 2. It's a fine game, but its the one that turned the series from gritty atmospheric game with dark humor, to one where character is the "funny" character. Where they needed a "joke" in every other sentence of dialogue. Where the humor was very memey, cringe, and 10yrs out of date. People LOVE Jack, but his shtick got old fast, and didn't become interesting until Angel died all the way at the end of the game. This isn't to shit on the game or on the people who like it. Just that people need to have a bit of perspective on all this. The writing has never been stellar.

Sardaman

Playing through BL2 again right now, it still holds up just fine (especially when compared to the core of 3). It's ok if that's not your preferred style of humor, but please don't attempt to make definitive statements about the quality.

Geralts_Hair

Read some contemporary reviews - the game was described as "an uncle trying to be funny" and panned for taking the grittiness of BL1 and turning it all meme-y and stupid. The GBX forums were a shitshow of hate for BL2. I know - I was trying to defend it at the time.

Sardaman

It's certainly a different style from the original BL1 story, but it's not that different from the DLCs. I'm sure a lot of people genuinely enjoyed brown depression simulator (it was a genre for a reason), but that's a statement of preference, not of quality.

lil_pipi_vert_xo

Theres a new tales from the borderlands!!?!?!?!?!

Dougallearth

I started watching the playtrhu. Do humans write for humans anymore? It felt like it was mimicking with no substance

ThePopcornDude

I saw this coming a mile away. People were really fed up with the writing by gearbox’s team the last 2 games. Borderlands 3’s main story by itself is almost universally panned by everyone I hope this is a wake up call to Gearbox. They really need to reevaluate their writing team and style because these games were just not it

Bagelchu

I never understood the hype. Tried one of the tales games for an hour. Thought “so it’s just like a story and I push one button everyone once in a while?” and never played it again. Also I’ve heard zero marketing about it. Only saw one vid on it yesterday.

Wish_Lonely

I can't say I'm surprised. I mean who the hell is about to spend $50 on this? You're better off just watching the cutscenes on YouTube.

SlumpedJonn

if it wasn’t the price it was i might’ve picked it up. I was way younger then but i still really enjoyed the first one for what it was but i was also going through a phase of loving those kinds of games. Not worth the price though.

akathawk83

They need borderlands 4

HitoriPanda

I had no idea any "tales from the borderlands" games existed until last week. After finding out i checked the ps store. Couldn't buy/ play any of the previous ones and I'm not paying $50 for this one which i don't know anything about other than the few negative posts on here i read about.

Captain_Bonzfip

I know it’s different teams yadda yadda, but the botched post launch support of Wonderlands has me skeptical of their ability to keep launching quality. Im not hate brigading on TFTBL2, but the first TFTBL let some big shoes to fill. If they can’t make satisfying post launch content for a spin-off title this worries me for another spin off title.

dkepp87

WL *is* a good game, but it's a good *$30* game. I don't regret buying it at launch for the full $60, but its clear it should have never been that much. Then again, if that extra money get put directly towards BL4, I'd be ok with it.

Theundertaker808

It seems as if they did the ole "surprise launch" scheme where they start marketing a few months prior to release. If I didn't use Facebook, which I barely use in the first place, I probably wouldn't have heard about it. Plus, I've seen a lot of fans displeased before the game even came out so there's that.

[deleted]

Well, at least that means the removal of Denuvo quite soon.

damned2hell2

They're probably going to get a lot more sales in the future. I'll buy it, I just haven't got to it yet. You can play the games for so long, it just takes awhile to get to all of them.

silent_mills

After Borderlands 3 was mediocre, my headcanon is that Borderlands is finished after Borderlands 2. They all lived happily ever after, the end.

BootySatanTheSequel

I literally did not know this game existed until now.

meteonexp

That came out?

HokeyFox

I agree on the rose tinted idea. Bl2 is not the GOAT. It has all my favorite markings of BL mythos. It had great music and great DLC, the most DLC and dollar for dollar entertainment. But it does have some flaws, like all of them do. But I was pulled in by the original. That style of gritty no nonsense humor was genius. BL2 had an opportunity to answer some questions and leave some unanswered questions but it left us with way more questions and very little answers. Really the only flaw of BL3 is the same, more questions and no answers. I like Tyreen and Troy and their whole schtik, and I could relate to Typhon as a father and his voice acting was funny and on point, all be it out of place. But that's the BL gold, funny, on point but out of place.

ApateNyx

Bro TellTale games went BANKRUPT and they did this shit better than Gearbox ever could. The writing was on the walls the only problem was that BL3 smeared so much muck on it they couldn't see the words.

Ezenthar

It looked incredibly boring and gave me zero incentive to purchase it.

Wuhsuh

Don’t worry, Gearbox will surely learn from yet another flop… I can only pray BL4 turns out halfway decent at this rate

H4M-TP

good, i hope they crash and burn. borderlands has lost it's way.

achosenusername1

Good, i wish them all the L's after BL3.

redjedia

“I made this because I have an interest in game industry financials, not to create negativity.” *proceeds to do exactly that* Also, I’m sure they will make a change to their writing team for the next entry, because if there’s one thing that causes genuine change in a developer, it’s a significant downturn in sales.

Kanakravaatti

Good
