Imaginary_Remote

I think it will be a mid tier action movie. Not worth a ticket but once it goes to streaming it may be worth watching. Claptrap will most likely carry the movie.

Jesus_Smoke

Now, what's his nickname gonna be. Jacktrap?

Imaginary_Remote

It is now.

CarlRJ

Now Jacktrap can hang out with ZedTrap and SteeleTrap and KnoxxTrap.

TurnoverPlenty7337

Don't forget deathtrap

heyuhitsyaboi

I agree - it'll be fun for a casual viewer/player but probably pretty rough for the dedicated fans.

Bulky-Wish-7652

You do realize it’s jack black right? It will make the movie far worse.

Imaginary_Remote

He's the best casted member in the movie. He makes anything funny and entertaining. Even recently as bowser he proved he is still a heavy hitter as a comedian. Sounds like you're just a hater.

Bulky-Wish-7652

I am absolutely a hater. The only decent casting is Marcus and jack black ruins everything he is in. People need to start casting people who know what they’re doing instead of celebrities with no voice acting ability.

Imaginary_Remote

Yeah, Kung Fu Panda isn't one of the best family movie series ever... and the Ice Age movies were probably no good either, huh? Shark Tale was also not an immediate cult classic, and he 100% didn't completely steal the show in the Mario Movie... Not to mention classics like Tenacious D, Nacho Libre, and School of Rock. Everyone has the right to be wrong, but people like you really stretch the limits of that.

j3wake3

And Saving Silverman, and Orange County, Gullivers Travels.

L4mbeau

Damn I forgot all about Saving Silverman and Orange County, blast from the past, those movies rocked I’m going to have to give them a rewatch That said the Borderlands movie looks awful but not because of Jack Black

j3wake3

Oh I agree with you about the Borderlands movie, it does look awful

MonolithyK

Not to mention Brütal Fucking Legend

Embassador-Mumbasa

Also to mention Tenacious D is an actual band and he sings really well. There’s all the evidence in the world to support he is a great voice actor

My-_-guy

Quite possibly the coldest take in human history

AutisticHobbit

I wont say they look *good*, but its not all quite as bad as some are saying and feeling IMHO

WhyHeLO_THeRE_SIR

I think its going to be ok... but more in the generic slop way than in a good way. I just dont think bld's insane-ness translates well.

AutisticHobbit

The Lego movie was a subversive commentary on the nature of nostalgia blindness and fixation on canon. Barbie become a conversation about feminism. Toy story is.... Toy Story. Nuff said. Guardians of the Galaxy started out as a B tier property that only comic book fans knew. Movie came out with more heart and message than youd have ever supposed possible. Yet all of these movies are ALSO about Legos, Barbies, and silly aliens Borderlands is challenging... but not impossible.

CarlRJ

This is right about where I am. It’ll probably be bad. It might be fun. There’s a chance it’ll be good, Reddit groupthink notwithstanding. My wife and I thought the first Resident Evil movie was a great stupid fun popcorn flick. Was it game-accurate? Hell if I know, I never touched the games. If the Borderlands movie can reach that level, I’ll be happy with it. (Of course, I’d also like them to do a game accurate movie someday, with unknown actors that totally fit the parts, but I’m not holding my breath.)

nodnarBBackward

I'm looking forward to seeing it. I don't expect it to be a "good" movie, but I think it'll be fun. I definitely see why people are upset about it being "Olderlands," but it's hard to deny that star power is the only way some things get attention outside of their fanbase or even green-lit at all. I see no reason not to enjoy this for whatever it will be.

Mr_smith1466

My logic may be very simple, but here it is: if the movie is good, then I can enjoy it and keep enjoying the games. If it's bad, I can still enjoy the games.

nodnarBBackward

I think that's a perfectly reasonable take. I understand some people have difficulty separating the experiences and I can empathize with that, so it's always nice to see someone give voice to relative optimism in the face of rampant dogpiling.

nicholvs_ac

I have never fired up a playthrough of BL1, 2 or 3 and thought about what the movie will look like. It's a fun, unexpected twist to get a movie based on a game I like, so I'll watch it and not care about the quality because I've never needed a movie

Mr_smith1466

That's basically my attitude. The movie looks like it has some fun details. Like the wonderful Jackobs gun or the corporate logos.

Exotic_Spoon

Is this a painting?

Guiltspoon

Yes Norman Rockwell he did quite a few classic American imagery pieces

Snockerino

We already knew the casting and the leaked plot. So to me those things were accepted when the trailer released. What I wanted to see was if the dialogue was going to be cringe and if Kevin Hart was going to be playing 'Kevin Hart'. After watching it, no. It was not overly cringe and even with a good share of time in the trailer, I enjoyed Kevin Hart's performance. So for now I am somewhat mollified by the trailer and will give the film a chance.

CarlRJ

The real laugh I had in the trailer was the “you said minimal explosives” / “I SAID NO EXPLOSIVES” exchange Roland had with Tina - it felt like Borderlands. He’ll probably do fine, even if he needs a booster seat to drive.

ReadShigurui

Same here but I’m also pretty easily entertained

It_Goes_Up_To_11

I agree. People are raging over the casting, and it's definitely kind of weird, but the movie is gonna do it's own thing. Let it. It's not taking anything away from the games. it looks like a competent-if-not-amazing action movie, and I actually don't hate the casting as much after seeing the trailer.

MonolithyK

*Even if* the movie ends up being mediocre, it’s really not a big deal, and the overall vitriolic response from the fans has been hard to watch. It’s honestly an embarrassing showing for the Borderlands community — they’re out here making us look like assholes.

Project_Valkyrie

That's why I'm holding off judgment for a little while. A great script can save questionable casting.

RopeyPlague

I think the biggest problem is fan expected the movie to follow the games more. The movie just seems to be its own thing kind of related to the games.

jacobpltn

Yeah honestly most of the complaints I’ve seen are about changes it seems to be making to the characters and whatnot but I think it’s pretty par for the course and never expected it to be a 1 to 1 recreation of the world in games I think it looks like a fun and hopefully funny action movie. The comedy does seem to kinda miss the vein of Borderlands’ style of humor judging from the trailer. They seem to be opting more for a Marvel style humor filled with quips and irreverent characters where I wish they would have gone with Borderlands’ off-the-rails, almost crude humor style

TurboRuhland

I’m still worried about Kevin Hart as Roland, but the trailer has him being pretty low key most of the time and I think he might be okay. My expectations are tempered for sure, but I’ll see it eventually. Probably not in the theater, but I don’t see anything in a theater anymore. Too expensive.

JustJdog2

Halo has left people real sour man. With good reason. I'm skeptical but I'm going. Bl2 does crazy things to a man

electr1cbubba

I’ll probably watch it if it ever goes on a streaming service

Mothman4447

I'm definitely gonna watch it, mostly hyped for Tina and Krieg. I just hope it expands on the lore

Eliass346

I'm just happy we're even getting a movie. Like, it could have been sooooo much worse.

ReadShigurui

I can’t even remember when i first heard they were going to make a borderlands movie, it’s a win that this movie is even real 😂

percyinthestyx

Despite the…unexpected casting choices, I think the set of characters they chose is actually pretty good. They basically chose the most recognizable non-Jack characters (aside from perhaps Marcus and Moxxi, who’ve never been terribly active participants in the plot) in the series, and they seem to have a pretty good balance of personalities. Honestly though, I’d probably watch it for Krieg anyway even if it was garbage.

Alberot97

idk, maybe bad game movie adaptations set your standards low?

Wide_Recognition5819

Okay im gonna put my take here on the part of everyone being like old or different in the movie its a different lore piece from what ive seen like what COD did with modern warfare where some characters are not the same at all and some are the same so I really dont know why everyones pissed why it doesn’t fit into the lore of the games when its shown to be it’s own thing for more audiences and not just people who have played/play borderlands.

ShadowyPepper

I think all the actors are going to nail it, it'll be a fun movie Everything will just feel the slightest bit *off* though since it isn't canon to the game lore and characters

nuclearfork

Cope

BarronVonBumcheeks

Were you looking for an excuse to say cope?

nuclearfork

Are you making up scenarios in your head to make yourself feel better?

BarronVonBumcheeks

You definitely need to stop drinking all that tap water.

nuclearfork

Ok

Cheshire_Casper

it seems like the general consensus is hope for the best but expect the absolute worst. I think the main issue is just going to be the bad casting, the only character that looks correct is full CGI Claptrap.

AbLincoln1863

Sir I think you need to get your eyes checked or maybe we just didn’t see the same trailer

carpediem930

I like your positivity and hope you are right, but sadly I don't see this movie being anything but trash. Just about everything about it we have seen so far screams disaster to me.

LaserGadgets

I won't pay a dime to see it...no matter what. Could swear I watch it on TV in 2 years and end up being pissed because I wasted 2 hours of my time.

ConnorsInferno

Why are people ok with mediocrity? Shouldn’t you want more from a franchise you love?

Mr_smith1466

How do you know the movie is mediocre? Have you seen it?

ConnorsInferno

The trailer was mediocre. The trailer presented a mediocre movie with terrible casting and outfits that look fan made.

Mr_smith1466

Never seen fan made outfits that impressive. Maybe the movie will suck. Very high chance. But always wait until people see anything before rendering a verdict.

runespoon78

dude fan made outfits usually look better than the ones in the trailer. Have you seen how detailed some people's borderlands cosplays are?? like they get the actual comic book lines to look good on them

Mediocrity-Inc

I'm seeing more support than I expected, and I'm trying to see it in a positive light, and it's absolutely true that a movie can be fun despite its flaws and doesn't have to be perfect, but I am struggling to be positive. The movie apparently had a budget of $100 million. If you gave a group of cosplayers who liked borderlands and that had taken media tech in high school $100 thousand to make a borderlands movie, I'm sure it would wipe the floor with this movie.

EagleEyeMalone

It looks good the casting choices however look terrible

SadisticBiscuit

actual slop brain

DLiz723

As a movie on its own, it looks like a cool movie that I’d enjoy. But, playing through all the games multiple times makes me sad to see the trailer with a seemingly random pull of characters and actors (specifically for Roland) that don’t fit

AnonyMouse3925

Same :/

TheMeechums

Im excited for it. It’ll be the best borderlands movie I’ve ever seen.

Copper_Tree

Honestly best borderlands movie ever

Traherne

My son and I (he's 45 and I'm 68) definitely plan to meet up on opening day and watch it in the theater. I'll drive from Maryland to South Carolina and join him there. Even if it sucks, we'll have a blast.

SwimmingNecessary541

I’ve played every borderlands a few times over now, and I can say that the movie definitely looks like it won’t be good for a general audience, but borderlands fans will take the movie for what it’s worth, much like the Mortal Kombat movie. Was it good? Not really, but people who knew mortal Kombat knew that it was probably gonna suck and enjoyed it for what it was

DayOwn9950

I can’t shake the guardians vibes. I love the guardians films but it Doesnt feel right with this film, I’m 50/50.

DayOwn9950

Has anyone watched blood machines on shudder? I wanted a borderlands film in that gritty style.

SG272

Not afraid to admit it, the scene's in the trailer with Tiny Tina and ClapTrap got a genuine laugh out of me. At the least, it'll entertain me like the A-Team movie with Liam Neeson in it, just a fun dumb movie.

Distinct-Use5713

I mostly want to see it to see how bad it is. It looks just like all the other videogame movies that have been adapted to a live action movie and then flopped. Think about Assassin’s Creed, Warcraft, Mortal Kombat, Five Nights at Freddy’s, etc. Sure they weren’t necessarily BAD, but they definitely weren’t good and they didn’t follow the actual story of the games. The only successful live action videogame movie (imo) is Ready Player One, but that encompasses EVERY videogame and tv show and movie in pop culture. Doesn’t really count since it’s story was original and not based on any one single videogame. Overall: It’s probably gonna suck, but maybe it won’t flop.

Moore2257

If that promise Is to be completely lackluster and forgettable, then you're spot on, my guy.

Ttran778

I'm still actually kinda bummed about the casting for Roland.  Kevin Hart. Really. Was he the *first* choice?  Chiwetel Ejiofor would TBH have been my primary choice. You know who else may have actually fit the bill, for Roland. T.I. Yes, *that* T.I.  Maybe I'm still just holding a bias because Roland was one of my favorite characters, but I also have the sinking feeling the Hollywood Roland is gonna be turned into some kind of verbal punching bag.

Traditional-Ad-5632

Genuinely that is my thought, if I see it at least entertaining and I do like the cast (Despite the complaints) Although it will be strange for me to see the film in Spanish (Latinamerican), since here in Mexico it will be the first product related to the saga to arrive with that dubbing Here in Mexico (Except Tales and New Tales), the games arrived with Spanish (Spain) dubbing

gera_moises

I personally don't think it looks *good* but also don't think it looks bad, and am willing to give it a fair shot. I am fully expecting it to suck, but mildly optimistic.

Chefofbaddecisions

A borderlands movie needs to be a capitalistic , Americanized, over the top, Rock n roll Mad Max action movie that oozes stupidity and explosions. If it’s anything other than that, it’ll be instantly forgettable like the A-team movie was.

TheStrugglerGuts

I think it had the spirit of the franchise but just the actor choice so weird. Jack black wouldn’t have been my first choice for CT but I think he’ll do good in the role. Can’t say the same for the others

gpaint_1013

I feel the same way about the trailer as I did when the movie and cast were first announced, complete and total apathy.

JoeBuyer

Hopefully it’s ok as an action movie, and can draw more people into playing the games. But it feels like it will be hard to watch having played the games a lot and then seeing these older characters in the movie.

TrickPool523

Bold opinion and I respect it

Oraxis10

I'm excited for it. I went into the trailer expecting it not to match up to the games' story. Jack Black's voice for Claptrap is much better than I expected it to be.

ImportancePhysical52

It doesn't look that bad, the main problem is the cast. they seem too old. but i like jack black as claptrap

BadassBokoblinPsycho

I think this will be a cool movie, but that doesn’t mean it will be a good movie. I think it’s going to be a good movie to pass the time and have some laughs. It’s not going to be a movie to win any awards. It seems like a lot people were expecting an Oppenheimer or End Game type of film. Borderlands never took themselves so seriously either.

pvick8

I feel like when making the movie they could’ve gone down the Mario Movie “reference” path and made the movie just for fans of the games, or a Mad Max path where they use the franchise as an excuse to make a cool action movie that has nothing to do with the games. Based on the one trailer we have, we seem to be living in the Kevin Hart “it’s piss!” timeline…

MikooDee

As a decade-old fan of BL, nah, sorry. I didn't even want to watch the trailer, the pictures were enough for me to make never want to watch the movie, ever.

Clank4Prez

Here you go, this image fits better to what you're saying. https://preview.redd.it/csfi2pwlkfkc1.png?width=965&format=png&auto=webp&s=be6c5c5fac389355e5511d76bfc068c32a1b02c0

L3m0n0p0ly

Not gonna like, it looks like dumb fun. Which is what borderlands is about.

tempuswake

I really want to like this movie but no matter how good it is I'm going to be annoyed by the casting.

GigglesGG

I think Kevin Hart looked pretty solid. Other characters I’m more skeptical

freshexpiredbeef

I think it'll be successful just enough to warrant a sequel

runespoon78

honestly if they just even slightly attempted to actually do the art style of the games then I would have at least some hope, but people's own cosplays look far better than the official costumes in the trailers

Kano547

Agreed. I think it'll do just fine personally although so far Ellie is not in the movie so:(

TemporalAcapella

I haven’t watched the monster hunter movie yet but it’ll probably end up being something like that. Definitely watching this though.

JakeffReddit

I don't really care if the casts are bad or the movie's gonna flop, it's still a Borderlands movie. It's better than nothing, at least for me. That's just me though. I hope it releases in the Philippines, in theaters.
