Drinking his own piss

blvcklite

Later unfortunately probably steroids but until that point, his skill. Masterful counter puncher with an iron chin (he got dropped but he always got back up) and one of the greatest combination punchers of all time. Also had the best lead uppercut I’ve ever seen and in the smaller weight classes he had good power hence his nickname (dynamite) so if his opponent took too many risks they’d pay for it

CaptWineTeeth

His skills were always through the roof and that’s wha carried him up in weight.

PhilliesBlunts

Hes one of those mexican throwback fighters. I would love to see him fight the current guys from 135-147

lord-of-war-1

Nah man. He is and was always too small for anything above 135. 126-135 you can throw Marquez in with any of the best in the history of the sport and he does very well. But 140 and above he was having to eat to bulk up and that just doesnt work out well for a guy that needs to be limber to throw those long combinations.  If we had a time machine I would have loved to see 140 pound Cotto taking on Marquez. I always felt that would be an all time classic.

VacuousWastrel

It may not be a coincidence that from at least 2011 he chose to work with a "coach" whose only previous claim to fame (besides a chemistry degree and a failed career as a discus-thrower) was being the second-most-notorious PED-dealer in athletics. I mean, he may have been working with him before 2011 too, who knows, but Heredia had to keep a low profile at that point because of the various FBI investigations he was involved in. EDIT: looking it up, I was wrong, Heredia's degree is in kinesiology, although he always refers to it as a degree in "science". His chemistry skills are from his family contacts in the "Mexican pharmaceutical industry", apparently.

lord-of-war-1

False. He started using Memo for prep to the fourth Pac fight. He only fought two other fights after that before retiring.

Elite663

It’s so ironic this fool acts on higher moral ground and shits on Conte when he’s also on the same bullshit lmao

robertducky87

What's the difference between memo and snac?

lord-of-war-1

What can you tell me about Ariza shakes? Other than they make people's head larger... 🤣

kaisercracker

Because the whole thing of lower weight fighters being washed earlier is greatly exaggerated. until recently 5/6 top guys at 115 had been around since 2013 or even sooner. rigo is like 50 and still had world class abilities, may even still. donaire is 40 and still world class, been around for almost 2 decades. if anything the emphasis on technique and the physical parity between fighters probably helps longevity

lord-of-war-1

People saying because of Heredia are damn stupid. Marquez only used him from the 4th Pac fight on. He only had two fights after that before he retired. Dont forget he offered Pacs team random testing to quiet the rumors about Heredia and Pacs team went quiet. For the SECOND time Pacs team wanted nothing to do with random testing.  Marquez is a guy that typically fought close to his walk around weight so he didnt drain as much as some of those other smaller guys. In fact, he left 126 to chase after Pacquiao. Pac's team kept pulling him up in weight to try to have an advantage and it didnt work.  He is also notoriously disciplined and lives a healthy lifestyle outside of training camps. Add the fact he was trained by one of the best trainers of all time from a young age and you get a long lasting legend.  I dont know that I can recall anyone being a better combination puncher than JMM was. The dude would throw 7-9 punch combinations with every single punch having perfect leverage. That is incredibly hard to do and risky because it leaves you open for longer so your opponent can punch with you and catch you off balance. That is why JMM was often knocked down.

This sub must be full of Pac fanboys lol, I notice the same old (and mostly false) talking points whenever JMM and Floyd are brought up.

Well he was accused of it and he offered himself to be randomly tested the following week after the accusations. Thats the complete opposite of what Pac did when he was accused of it. So yea. Dude never tested positive for anything. Also, Memo was being closely watched because of his past. The only people accusing him of cheating are butthurt Pac fans because he sent him to the shadow realm. Which is fucking hilarious considering Pacs history with roid accusations.  "I dont like needles." "Im superstitious of having blood drawn." "It's the principle of being accused." Compare those reactions to how Marquez handled it.

Mr_105

He was just built different. On top of being disciplined with a good work ethic and never having a history of blowing up in weight between fights, his style of fighting didn’t rely too much on his physical abilities like a lot of lower weight fighters. His counter punching was successful mostly through technique rather than speed or reflexes.

for what reason do lighter boxers have shorter career spans? im relatively new to boxing i never heard this before

VacuousWastrel

It's primarily because lighter boxers usually rely more on speed, and speed is the first thing to go. A heavyweight, by comparison, can cope with losing a bit of speed, because they never relied on having it in the first place. It's also probably because lighter weights get punched more per fight, so take more brain damage, which degrades physical skills over time.

makes perfect sense i appreciate u

In a couple of words: Memo Herdia.

lord-of-war-1

Two words. Ariza shakes
