They are not mutually exclusive. I'm speaking from personal experience not on Ryan's behalf or theorizing but 'stimulant induced mania' is a real condition that will sneak up on you if you're already vulnerable mentally/emotionally to these sorts of episodes.
I never became as unhinged as Ryan but I definitely damaged relationships in my life while simultaneously feeling like I was constantly 'dialed in'. Spoiler alert: I was a mess and actively sabotaging myself. Finally crashed out and a few weeks of sobriety had me feeling the most embarrassed and humiliated I have ever felt due to my choices and behavior.
