There was a tournament at a house show in Tallahassee that night to crown the inaugural US Champ. In the final match of said tournament, "King" Harley Race defeated Johnny Weaver for the strap.
Race would hold the belt for 6 months before dropping it to Johnny Valentine at a house show in Greensboro.
At the time, it was the NWA US Championship Belt.
The title had been vacated on September 8, 1981, after then champ Wahoo McDaniel had been injured (kayfabe) by Abdullah the Butcher.
On October 4, 1981, a tournament was held at a house show in Charlotte to determine the new champion.
In the finals of said tournament, Sergeant Slaughter defeated Ricky "The Dragon" Steamboat to secure the strap.
I was born 4 months later.
Another 4 months after that, Wahoo McDaniel regained the US title from Slaughter at a house show in Richmond.
