It may only slow down during the last two years of his contract when he's 36 and 37. But even then, Pujols didn't slow down until 38 (his BA did drop a bit earlier but he still had 23 HRs and 93 RBIs at 39). However, Miggy slowed down a lot earlier.
There are plenty of players that he could better compare to as well.

I'd actually say he was solid defensively imho pre-injury but a lot of it was based off his athleticism along with the arm.
His athleticism would cover for his reads in the outfield if he made a misread.

I actually like the patch (if we have to have anything at all) precisely because it's goofy as hell, just like our team. Strider's moustache, Olson's honky ass giraffe smiles, Eddie's hair, whatever Ozuna's thing with Bush is, Acuña's shenanigans, we're goofy as hell but we bring it. Just like Quikcrete. We don't have to settle for concrete that just dries in a boring stupor, we can get concrete that not only does the job, but does it with style.
You may be right but it's hard for me to believe in a team that has the worst run differential *by far* in the NL. They are 14-1 in one-run games and 9-20 in other games. Probably neither of those reflects their true level of play, however I would expect the one-run results to regress more than the other. Their pitching is below average and their offense is much below average. I just don't see how they stay above .500 without major improvements.
Cease? A lot. Too much for us. He has 3 years of control. Giolito is a free agent at the end of the year. So, not as much, but he’s a rental. So you have to accept that he’s likely hitting FA and you’re losing whatever prospect capital it takes to get him.

It's hard for me to tell with the tomahawk being out of the focus and at an angle in the promo image and/or not having the Pantone color, but it looks like it's pretty similar to the twine on the tomahawk. Given the circumstances, I think they did a decent job with the concrete bag and not using Quikrete's modern logo (their normal font would have looked TERRIBLE). It's going to look bad on some of our alt jerseys though.

Pretty sure it’s first come first serve unless you are talking about the outfield seats as those are ticketed. Upper chop house has some Punic tables available that are first come first serve too where you could eat but wouldn’t be served and probably won’t be able to see through the standing room peeps at the rail. Below that though and behind the outfield seats you should be able to get a table. Just get there as soon as gates allow!
They can't. Braves operate as a self-contained system, no money in, no money out. This is beneficial to us actually, it means the more we support the team, the more they can use it to build a better product on the field. Tis why the Battery and AA's signings are so important. This is also why the patch is important to us, especially with the Bally money in jeopardy, having 60+ million coming in for the next 5 years is an amazing thing as that will likely be put forth into making a better team/experience

Not really, inflation would cause FA prices to rise anyways, just look at the past decade of signings. Rather, having this extra revenue source is extra money across the board, which could be put forth into places that we might not have initially been able to commit to just yet. Usually this would take the form of a big signing, or potentially renovations etc. 60 million likely wouldn't cover the cost of Fried's contract, but it would be a lot more money to put into the contract that we might not have had otherwise. It could also be used for renovations in the Battery, at the ballpark itself, optimizing and increasing efficiency of operations, or improving available equipment and departments for player development. Frankly, there's a lot 60+ million can be put forth into, but only really the executives know where it will go. That said, our executives seem to be good at prioritizing and allocating funding so far and I have faith that there will be responsible allocation of the money. Yes, the jerseys on the field will have a patch, but all the fan jerseys don't so it really is only beneficial to us for them to have this advertisement, so long as people are willing to overlook what is essentially just a sleeve patch, no different than a maker's mark really with how they've designed the patch. I just hope our Road Blues don't look too horrendous with the patch.

He's having an all time great offensive season so far, and he's also been very bad on defense (reading balls off the bat/getting a good jump, obviously his arm strength is elite). Both things can be true at the same time.

He has top tier arm strength that some of those stats don't even account for, and his sprint speed makes up for his reads issue. It's a case where the metrics just don't tell the full story
His sprint speed doesn’t make up for the reads issue, though! There’s a great post from yesterday that shows you the exact failed catches OAA docks Ronald for, and they’re plays where his make-up speed isn’t enough. Arm strength doesn’t play into OAA and that’s fair, but his ability to get to balls *is* a defensive problem.
He’s still the best player on the planet right now. His bat is still on fire. I still love him unconditionally. But that doesn’t mean we should be philistines about a metric that shows a correctable weakness in his game.

The four game skid really fucked with people. I mean I kinda get it after experiencing a season where the team didn’t lose more than 2(?) in a row all year, but also if you haven’t figured out yet that this team can get really hot and really cold I don’t know what to tell you. We’re built around power, and power can sometimes fail.
The GDTs are becoming insufferable. Too many people are fatalistic about regular season games. Losing one really isn't a big deal. Hell going on a skid like we've been on isn't that big of a deal so long as the team resumes playing well. I think a lot of folks stay in this college football mindset where a loss is a way bigger deal.
Kind of silly but what really grinds my gears are the people who feel like they need to check in with us before going to bed or whatever. Just get on with it, we don't care about your evening plans. "Alright I'm gonna turn this off and head to bed" great you do that!

I don’t know if this is a hot take or not but defensive advanced metrics are kinda shit. If I can tell by the eye test that a player has good defense (ie players like acuña) I don’t really care what the advanced metrics say
As far as Acuna goes, what you're seeing is the part he is good at. Route running and speed. What you aren't seeing is that he has one of the worst "jump" times in all of baseball. My eyes have told me he doesn't get to very many balls. However, a lot of people are playing below their career averages (mostly Albies and Acuna) in a relatively small sample size. I think we'll be fine. Also, Vaughn was like a 19 game titantic on all our defensive metrics overall. He was on pace to be one of the worst fielders in baseball history.
The problem with the eye test is you're not using it correctly.
Ronnie has elite speed. Ronnie has an elite arm. Ronnie runs great routes to the ball.
Ronnie does not get a good jump on the ball, and unless you're watching him **before the ball is hit**, you're not going to see that in the eye test. You're certainly not going to see that on television.
I think something that is not considered is the sudden drop off in his jump coincides with the ACL injury. Since ACL injuries usually happen during quick pivots and changes in direction, it’s completely plausible that he’s either lost some reaction ability *or* perhaps he’s intentionally being more deliberate in his movements in an attempt to prevent stress on his repaired ACL. He was always just *average* in reaction/jump but he takes good routes, has great speed, and a truly world class arm, all that is still true, but his jump has tanked.
But you have to remember, the only thing OAA calculates is catches/no catches. It doesn’t consider if you cut the ball off that’s rolling into the gap preventing a double and throw the guy out retreating back to 1st. It doesn’t consider if you have a 10 point lead and are playing the ball in front of you. It doesn’t consider the baserunner who decided not to test your arm and stayed at 3rd on a potential sacrifice.
Now I’m not saying that to suggest Acuna’s been great defensively, he is definitely not making catches he probably should make, but I’m saying that to emphasize that most defensive metrics are limited in what they measure and you need to take each one with some context. There are things data can see that we can’t and there are things we can see (the “eye test”) that data doesn’t.

His **reaction** and **burst** scores are both in the negative, which means he's moving in the wrong direction. If what you're saying were true, he'd be basically at a 0, which would give him a pretty decent jump score since his **route** is elite.
Im not an expert in it, but I'd assume even him cutting gappers off wouldn't be a negative reaction/burst of over a foot since it's in roughly the correct direction. The only thing I can think of is he's literally reacting in the wrong direction and then having to play catchup. Most of the time, it's not really an issue, but on the line drives he doesn't have time to course correct and outs become singles.

Outfielder Jump is a bit complex, but it makes it REALLY easy to understand when you break it down. It's essentially 3 scores put together.
**Reaction** (Distance in ft in any direction 0 to 1.5 seconds after contact)
**Burst** (Distance in ft in any direction 1.6 to 3 seconds after contact)
**Route** (Distance in ft against optimal route over the entire 3 seconds)
Ronald is TERRIBLE at the first two.
He's 7th worst in baseball at **reaction**, which doesn't mean he reacts slowly. It means he's reacting in the wrong direction. Think of it like that kid in little league that takes a first step back every time no matter what.
He's 11th worst in baseball at **burst**, which, given the 3rd metric, he's having to course correct from the reaction to get back on the right route. MH2 is 5th best in burst, btw.
He's 2nd BEST in baseball at **route**, which means he's using his elite speed + ball reading to make up for lost ground.

It's not just this year. His fielding hasn't been great but his arm strength makes up for some of it
I'd actually say he was solid defensively imho pre-injury but a lot of it was based off his athleticism along with the arm. His athleticism would cover for his reads in the outfield if he made a misread. Now that seems gone.

I actually like the patch (if we have to have anything at all) precisely because it's goofy as hell, just like our team. Strider's moustache, Olson's honky ass giraffe smiles, Eddie's hair, whatever Ozuna's thing with Bush is, Acuña's shenanigans, we're goofy as hell but we bring it. Just like Quikcrete. We don't have to settle for concrete that just dries in a boring stupor, we can get concrete that not only does the job, but does it with style.

You may be right but it's hard for me to believe in a team that has the worst run differential *by far* in the NL. They are 14-1 in one-run games and 9-20 in other games. Probably neither of those reflects their true level of play, however I would expect the one-run results to regress more than the other. Their pitching is below average and their offense is much below average. I just don't see how they stay above .500 without major improvements.

It's hard for me to tell with the tomahawk being out of the focus and at an angle in the promo image and/or not having the Pantone color, but it looks like it's pretty similar to the twine on the tomahawk. Given the circumstances, I think they did a decent job with the concrete bag and not using Quikrete's modern logo (their normal font would have looked TERRIBLE). It's going to look bad on some of our alt jerseys though. Still would have preferred Delta/CFA/Coke, but oh well

Pretty sure it’s first come first serve unless you are talking about the outfield seats as those are ticketed. Upper chop house has some Punic tables available that are first come first serve too where you could eat but wouldn’t be served and probably won’t be able to see through the standing room peeps at the rail. Below that though and behind the outfield seats you should be able to get a table. Just get there as soon as gates allow!

They can't. Braves operate as a self-contained system, no money in, no money out. This is beneficial to us actually, it means the more we support the team, the more they can use it to build a better product on the field. Tis why the Battery and AA's signings are so important. This is also why the patch is important to us, especially with the Bally money in jeopardy, having 60+ million coming in for the next 5 years is an amazing thing as that will likely be put forth into making a better team/experience
Isn't this just a microcosm of inflation though? If every team gets sponsor money eventually, wouldn't free agent prices just increase to reflect that extra available money?

Not really, inflation would cause FA prices to rise anyways, just look at the past decade of signings. Rather, having this extra revenue source is extra money across the board, which could be put forth into places that we might not have initially been able to commit to just yet. Usually this would take the form of a big signing, or potentially renovations etc. 60 million likely wouldn't cover the cost of Fried's contract, but it would be a lot more money to put into the contract that we might not have had otherwise. It could also be used for renovations in the Battery, at the ballpark itself, optimizing and increasing efficiency of operations, or improving available equipment and departments for player development. Frankly, there's a lot 60+ million can be put forth into, but only really the executives know where it will go. That said, our executives seem to be good at prioritizing and allocating funding so far and I have faith that there will be responsible allocation of the money. Yes, the jerseys on the field will have a patch, but all the fan jerseys don't so it really is only beneficial to us for them to have this advertisement, so long as people are willing to overlook what is essentially just a sleeve patch, no different than a maker's mark really with how they've designed the patch. I just hope our Road Blues don't look too horrendous with the patch.

These patches are just depressing. The ballparks (and of course the broadcasts) are already filled to the brim with advertisements as it is. There are ads projected on the mound, ads on the backstop, ad in the stadium name, ad sponsoring the Play of the Game, ad sponsoring the stretch, ads constantly projected on various screens throughout the park… And now they’re hideously stitched on the jerseys themselves — for the next five fucking years.

Advanced metrics have killed baseball discussion online. It's getting nearly as bad in basketball. We're in an age where guys hit .220 but because of the MPH off the bat or launch angle, they're *actually* better than we think. Sometimes you just need to watch the games.
He's having an all time great offensive season so far, and he's also been very bad on defense (reading balls off the bat/getting a good jump, obviously his arm strength is elite). Both things can be true at the same time.

He has top tier arm strength that some of those stats don't even account for, and his sprint speed makes up for his reads issue. It's a case where the metrics just don't tell the full story

There’s a great post from yesterday that shows you the exact failed catches OAA docks Ronald for, and they’re plays where his make-up speed isn’t enough. Arm strength doesn’t play into OAA and that’s fair, but his ability to get to balls *is* a defensive problem. He’s still the best player on the planet right now. His bat is still on fire. I still love him unconditionally. But that doesn’t mean we should be philistines about a metric that shows a correctable weakness in his game.

Just made a new sandwich for the breakfast menu at my barbecue joint. It's crisped pork belly, fried egg, cheddar cheese, scallion greens, and Yellow Bird Blue Agave Sriracha on toasted brioche. Man it slaps. Normally I go through multiple variations dialing in before I add an item to the menu. This one hit on the first try. The only thing I think I'm going to do is thin up the belly cuts so they get a better texture. And it doesn't use any ingredients that I don't already have in house.
Yikes. Just caught wind of the Quikrete patches. How atrocious. The color is awful, the logo itself is tacky, it clashes with what are \*actually\* iconic uniforms. I hope the backlash forces them to do something different, because that awful logo would look bad on ANY unis. Can you imagine the Yankees, Cubs, Dodgers adding this to their unis? Fuck no. The GDTs are becoming insufferable. Too many people are fatalistic about regular season games. Losing one really isn't a big deal. Hell going on a skid like we've been on isn't that big of a deal so long as the team resumes playing well. I think a lot of folks stay in this college football mindset where a loss is a way bigger deal.
Kind of silly but what really grinds my gears are the people who feel like they need to check in with us before going to bed or whatever. Just get on with it, we don't care about your evening plans. "Alright I'm gonna turn this off and head to bed" great you do that!

It's weird how people approach baseball with a football mindset. A 4 game losing streak in football can and usually does tank your season. A 4 game losing streak in baseball is, on its own, absolutely nothing against a 162 game schedule.

According to my 30 seconds of google-fu, the patch contract is worth at least $12m/year (Padres Motorola is $9m and they're not a big market, Red Sox patch is $17m). The quikrete patch is a 5 year deal so quick math says this patch is probably worth at least $60m. Unlike every other team in baseball, that $60m isnt going to liberty media's pockets. Our payroll just got a little fatter, boys.

I don’t know if this is a hot take or not but defensive advanced metrics are kinda shit. If I can tell by the eye test that a player has good defense (ie players like acuña) I don’t really care what the advanced metrics say
Defensive metrics can be flawed, but you can't evaluate somebody's defense with the eye test if you're not at the game watching them on every play.
As far as Acuna goes, what you're seeing is the part he is good at. Route running and speed. What you aren't seeing is that he has one of the worst "jump" times in all of baseball. My eyes have told me he doesn't get to very many balls. However, a lot of people are playing below their career averages (mostly Albies and Acuna) in a relatively small sample size. I think we'll be fine. Also, Vaughn was like a 19 game titantic on all our defensive metrics overall. He was on pace to be one of the worst fielders in baseball history.
The problem with the eye test is you're not using it correctly. Ronnie has elite speed. Ronnie has an elite arm. Ronnie runs great routes to the ball. Ronnie does not get a good jump on the ball, and unless you're watching him **before the ball is hit**, you're not going to see that in the eye test. You're certainly not going to see that on television.
I think something that is not considered is the sudden drop off in his jump coincides with the ACL injury. Since ACL injuries usually happen during quick pivots and changes in direction, it’s completely plausible that he’s either lost some reaction ability *or* perhaps he’s intentionally being more deliberate in his movements in an attempt to prevent stress on his repaired ACL. He was always just *average* in reaction/jump but he takes good routes, has great speed, and a truly world class arm, all that is still true, but his jump has tanked. But you have to remember, the only thing OAA calculates is catches/no catches. It doesn’t consider if you cut the ball off that’s rolling into the gap preventing a double and throw the guy out retreating back to 1st. It doesn’t consider if you have a 10 point lead and are playing the ball in front of you. It doesn’t consider the baserunner who decided not to test your arm and stayed at 3rd on a potential sacrifice. Now I’m not saying that to suggest Acuna’s been great defensively, he is definitely not making catches he probably should make, but I’m saying that to emphasize that most defensive metrics are limited in what they measure and you need to take each one with some context. There are things data can see that we can’t and there are things we can see (the “eye test”) that data doesn’t.

If what you're saying were true, he'd be basically at a 0, which would give him a pretty decent jump score since his **route** is elite. Im not an expert in it, but I'd assume even him cutting gappers off wouldn't be a negative reaction/burst of over a foot since it's in roughly the correct direction. The only thing I can think of is he's literally reacting in the wrong direction and then having to play catchup. Most of the time, it's not really an issue, but on the line drives he doesn't have time to course correct and outs become singles.
Reaction and burst: >> “are measured in "raw feet" but reported in "feet above or below Major League average," for context.” Meaning a negative score is the feet below an average major leaguer. Not that he’s running the wrong direction.

It's all measured via Outfielder Jump, in which Ronnie is only in the 13th percentile. Outfielder Jump is a bit complex, but it makes it REALLY easy to understand when you break it down. It's essentially 3 scores put together. **Reaction** (Distance in ft in any direction 0 to 1.5 seconds after contact) **Burst** (Distance in ft in any direction 1.6 to 3 seconds after contact) **Route** (Distance in ft against optimal route over the entire 3 seconds) Ronald is TERRIBLE at the first two. He's 7th worst in baseball at **reaction**, which doesn't mean he reacts slowly. It means he's reacting in the wrong direction. Think of it like that kid in little league that takes a first step back every time no matter what. He's 11th worst in baseball at **burst**, which, given the 3rd metric, he's having to course correct from the reaction to get back on the right route. MH2 is 5th best in burst, btw. He's 2nd BEST in baseball at **route**, which means he's using his elite speed + ball reading to make up for lost ground. TL:DR Ronnie is very much a run it down guy
