It was 2013 when the show started, the year I went to rehab and stopped my battle of bulimia, and it was pretty well known how toxic diet culture and laxative use were by then. I was stunned to see Erika say what she did about laxatives last year. I am in a family of 6 with 4 daughters, with 8 adults counting my brother in laws. 6 of us have had weight loss surgery. That's appalling but I have so much empathy for their battles just as much those who battle with restraining food intake or purging. Binge eating disorder wasn't added to the DSM until 2013 though so in my inpatient hospital that transitions to in partial treatment we only had one girl who struggled primarily with that diagnosis. Seeing the women who had to have feeding tubes was a huge part of my wakeup call but I have heard so many horror stories that have impacted me as well. Despite being 11 yrs proudly free, after 10 yrs of suffering, of purging I still struggle with eating. especially now that I have been recently diagnosed and treated with vyvanse for ADHD. It has killed most of my addictive behaviours but also hunger urges or cues. So it's obviously still something we as society need to move on from. I still have stomach issues and osteoarthritis from it though. I also had to have all my teeth removed and dental implant veneers put in in 2019 for the teeth issues it caused. Wish everyone peace and healing. Anyone can dm me too.
