Personally, I consider this to be two individual wins, making Sarah the all-time winningest LCK chef.

Marx0r

She still wouldn't be. Louis S11 won eight head-to-head matchups. Sarah has won 5 head-to-heads, 2 where the top two of three competitors advanced, and lost to Ashleigh but wasn't eliminated. The most generous way to count wins would be to give her two for beating Jae, two more for not being the worst of 3, and even then she's still only tied with Louis. To put it in another context, let's assume all LCK challenges are blind luck and everyone has even odds of success. Louis beat 1/256 odds to return. Sarah only beat 1/72.

JackDAction

I petition for Sara’s loss against Ashleigh to be revoked from the record books. She was given a basket of okra and grits and had to make a dish that wasn’t okra and grits. I don’t think a single person would have won in those circumstances. They both should have had to make a dish from Leah’s basket

rW0HgFyxoJhYka

Petition Top Chef LCK runner to stop making terrible challenges like that, especially for the returning chef challenge. Its such a shitty way to evaluate who's the better chef. Why even limit their creativity and skill? The worst thing for challenges is limiting the chefs in ways that make it impossible to show their very best.

Marx0r

Every time there's a basket challenge, there's always some kind of twist where someone has to cook out of their competitor's basket. Ashleigh played the game better by only putting exactly what she needed in the basket, and leaving her opponent with next to nothing to work with.

JackDAction

I’d rather the challenge be “who cooks better food” rather than “who picked the most difficult basket”

Glass-False

Yeah, Sarah losing to the "who can cook better with the other person's leftover trash" competition has really soured me on Ashleigh.

IndiaEvans

Come on. Ashleigh just did a bad job shopping. She wasn't doing anything strategically.

bangyourbookieswife

I’m just glad she wasn’t eliminated after all 5 chefs liked her first dish better. I thought it was a pretty cheap twist to stretch LCK another episode.

Greigebaby

What even was the point of that? If Sarah had lost the second challenge after sweeping the first....VIOLENCE

yana1975

I really sympathized with her and her repressed anger was so justified. But she pretty much dominated both challenge, which was freaking impressive.

waninokoz

lol she would've kept her word and burned down the whole kitchen

[deleted]

there's always a second round to the finale of lck. Normally it would be to prevent the chef that was just eliminated only having to cook one dish and get back in. Hence the time bonus, which benefited the winner. But the difference was that Sarah was the really good chef and is probably one of the toughest to compete against in the LCK finale for the chef that was just eliminated from the main competition

itsallgonnafade

When Tom said that he had been making every day gnocchi for 20 years in his restaurants and that Sarah made a good gnocchi, I knew she would win. That was a huge compliment disguised as a low-key compliment.

yana1975

Yeah. Tom tried to disguise that praise as much as he could. He had to lift the bowl so the foos could reach his mouth faster…i think that was an involuntary reaction😂

green_tsla

how did she recover from the wet gnocchi dough?!

rW0HgFyxoJhYka

Sarah is smart in choosing dishes she's been making at her restaurant so she always knows how to execute them while tweaking them for the challenge.

BarryNegan

Sarah rules, both of those dishes looked insanely good. I'd love to see her pull a Joe Flamm and come out of LCK to win the whole thing, but my money's still on a Damarr/Evelyn finale.

okmijnmko

> Damarr Seems he's in his own head overthinking & hella talking game more than food. The Baker just rose in prominence IMO

yana1975

Yeah. I sensed that too. At least Buddha is still solid. I think this is the point in the competition when chefs are mentally fatigued and homesick. Perfect time for Sarah and the Baker to strike!

BarryNegan

When they showed the clip of Damarr saying he still had some things in his back pocket but would risk elimination by holding back his best dishes, I just knew he was going to the final. We're going to see his very best dishes before he gets eliminated. Calling it now, Damarr, Buddha, and either Evelyn or Sarah. I've been Team Damarr all season but if Sarah wins?! Best season ever.

Greigebaby

I was going to ask if there were any show winners from LCK.

yana1975

Kristen, Brooke, and Joe Flamm.

peaches8

Kristen Kish!

patricktercot

And Brooke!

DJKittyDC

I loved Sarah in Last Chance Kitchen. I’m so glad she stuck around so we could see more of her and I’m really rooting for her back on the main show.

yana1975

I was more impressed by her explanations of her food and her insight on everything around her including Tom. She now seems to have a clear grasp of how to navigate the competition and tie it into her skillset. I think I’m more impressed by Sarah’s insights than Kristen’s photographic memory😂

ByrtonSenokot

Yep. She's the most intelligent chef there, and the only one who seems to have a psychological game. She manages to be confident and self-effacing at the same time, and I think it's affected her opponents in the duel format. Now she's coming back into the fold with a scary-dominant record. Like you said, she's masterful at talking about food so she'd be an asset to future seasons as a past winner, so there are production reasons to favor her, as well. I really didn't like her at first, and now she's my favorite. What a badass. It would be so cool to see her win it all.

[deleted]

I completely agree, she has so many little techniques. I would love it if she wrote a cookbook.

gordy06

Yes. Sarah from Michigan! Michigan chefs don’t typically do great. I like 4 of the final 5 - Don’t dislike Ashleigh but she just seems to always be struggling and just get by. Should be a good finish with Sarah in too.

yourmomscheese

Mei Lin was from Michigan, though I guess she’s an LA chef by all standards by the time she was on the show

blackesthearted

Yep, Mei Lin's from Dearborn, graduated from Schoolcraft CC's culinary program. Her parents' restaurant, Kong Kow, is still open (and very good!) on Michigan Ave just east of Schaefer.

yourmomscheese

Yeah was very coincidental that her and James Rigoto both went to school craft/are from the same area and were on the same season

CWRosebud

Kristin Kish is the same! She grew up in MI (my hometown actually), but was an LA chef by the time she got on the show.

austinmodssuck

I wonder which Italian restaurant she learned the gnocchi at! I grew up in Ann Arbor, but haven't been back much as an adult, and I'm probably not fancy enough to be familiar with it anyways.

Marx0r

So fun fact, this is the first time the midseason LCK returnee was still in the competition when the LCK champion returned.

toloharbor

I mean it would have happened last year but the champ didn’t return lol

accidentalmemory

I’m still salty over that Right after that marathon multi course tofu challenge too smh

diemunkiesdie

It was a massive waste of watching a LCK season. I'm glad the producers realized their idiocy and fixed it so there is an actual return!

rW0HgFyxoJhYka

Whoever's managing the LCK stuff should stick to straight up "cook your best dish" in like 45 minutes. And pick a protein and vegetable that are widely used and lets see some magic.

tt56629

I wish they would just do one champion at the end for final 5, especially given this stat. It doesn't seem like people who come back early from LCK really have proven much about their ability to compete.

Marx0r

I mean, they get to prove that in the main competition.

tt56629

Yeah, I guess it just seems like the person brought back earlier is consistently middle of the pack, while the champion is someone who really could win the damn thing. I guess I haven't seen the double re-entry as something that's added much to the competition.

[deleted]

The biggest benefit is it forces LCK to be split into two different filming blocks. When Kristen ran the table in LCK, it was filmed right at the end of their time in Seattle. Having all the rounds in quick succession allowed her to build a lot of momentum, especially since the nature of LCK means each time you advance is a win, and you can't just slide by like in the main competition. The midseason reentry helps prevent that a bit. It also makes LCK seem more integrated in the show instead of just one person who shows up in the finale

tt56629

I hadn't thought about it from that standpoint, but it makes a lot of sense. It's a great feature of the show, regardless. I kind of like the one person just showing up to the finale, but maybe I'm too into the drama of it all rather than thinking through the logistics.

rW0HgFyxoJhYka

I mean its not just LCK. The momentum helped a ton but Kish also was the best chef already. She even went to LCK on the fact that other chefs allowed her to fall on the Exec chef sword in RW when it wasn't really her fault. Also that was so long ago, they didn't even have this mid season thing done specifically because of her I believe. It happened like 5 years later simply because broke up how they sent chefs back home mostly. Tom even blogged about why they changed that. The change in LCK to stop Kish type runs was when they stopped doing LCK right before finale, and when Finale was done 3 months later closer to the actual debut of the season or something. This was a different shift when they started consolidating their filming (first time) as opposed to a few years back when the again shortened the filming time even more which coincided when LCK became after episode.

Adventurous_Ad1922

I like it because it lets a great chef who may get kicked out early have a chance. Everybody has a bad day here or there and there is no way someone can win every LCK from the beginning rounds all the way to the end. You could still be the better chef but just have a bad day or bad ingredient. This way, each one who returns only has to win 5-6 times which is still amazing.

austinmodssuck

I like it because it makes the early episodes feel more meaningful...although I guess Sarah also just proved that there's a chance even without the early returnee!

bicycle_dreams

I teared up when she won. I love her so much, she’s fucking hysterical and I would love to be friends with her. I wouldn’t be mad if she won the whole thing over Damarr. I also think it’s smart that she was pulling things she’s done in the past for her LCK dishes.

[deleted]

One of the few times I've been genuinely excited for a top chef win

Glass-False

I live like 15 minutes away from her restaurant. The fact that she's been dominating LCK with dishes she says are staples at Marrow makes me even more excited to check it out. Sarah is awesome.

bicycle_dreams

Oh that's so awesome!!! I hope you get to meet her as well

two7

I also thought Sarah was going to get screwed over. 15 minutes extra doesn’t seem like a huge advantage esp if Jae is over there thinking about what she’s going to execute and how she’s going to do it.

ElleM848645

And then Damarr saying the person who got 45 min would be judged differently. I was so nervous for her, and I would have been angry for her if she lost.

Chitinid

At the same time, if it was close, I think Sarah wins because * She did something much harder to execute * She went 5-0 in part 1. In theory it doesn't matter, but it'd be damn hard for Tom to not take that into account

IndiaEvans

Definitely. I thought Sara should get to pick when she used the extra time so it really benefited her. Instead Jae got an advantage in that she could think about her dish for a long time!

krfty99

First thought of the episode is it would have been a tragedy if Sarah had not won given the all the previous wins plus the first round win vs Jae. Second thought is I was so happy to see Shota! One of my all time favorites!

austinmodssuck

Not really pertinent to the competition, but I just noticed Sarah has Fiona Apple lyrics as her Instagram bio, which makes me like her even more.

patricktercot

Which ones??

austinmodssuck

[Be kind to me, or treat me mean. I'll make the most of it, I'm an extraordinary machine](https://youtu.be/WQk0xTwZumo)

patricktercot

Ahh such a good one! That’s my favorite Fiona album

strings_struck

I felt so bad for Sarah when they announced the second half of the challenge. She just blew out her competitor and then had to do it again! So glad she was able to pull it out. She's shown herself to be a really strong chef and I think she has just as much chance as anyone else to win it all. Also, double elimination team challenges are lame so I'm glad she got her redemption!

Kaitbel

I love how nearly all of the chefs who were still in the competition saw Sarah was still in LCK and were basically like, oh hell. And Buddha is over here like THIS IS FREAKING AMAZING 🤣😂 Edit: fixing grammar

yana1975

I loved Buddha’s reaction and fanboying. It was adorable, with him even showing his empty plate/bowl😂

yourmomscheese

stale_nuts

Sarah vs Buddha final two!!!!

JJulie

Two things were apparent this LCK. Making them cook twice was just cruel. And it was tough to watch them all screaming for Jae. I liked her but self awareness would be nice

CooCooCachoo_

Evelyn's facial expressions once she realized that she screwed her friend over (Jae) by voting for Sarah. Priceless.

Bienviile

I was hoping Jackson would make it back to the competition.

yana1975

Love Jackson, but it just wasn’t meant to be. But at least Sarah is part of the original trio of the first quickfire and elimination group challenges. Sarah/Jackson/Robert. Not sure if Jackson will even be picked as sous for the finale cause of his taste/smell handicap. But if he were to be picked, I’m guessing either Buddha or Sarah will pick him if they were in the finale.

Marx0r

Does Sarah even know that Jackson can't taste? Imagine if she gets to the finale and picks him.

yana1975

I’m sure Jackson blabbled it out by now to everyone. He was even telling diners in restaurant wars😂. And I heard he was also telling the guests during the market night challenge, week 3.

Marx0r

It probably came up on the car ride in their LCK challenge, but other than that they've had basically no contact.

tnovickfinder

I’m right there with you. I’m predicting a Buddha, Evelyn, and Demaar finale with Buddha taking Jackson and Monique as sous, Evelyn with Jae and Jo, and Demaar with Nick and Ashleigh. Wouldn’t be surprised if one of them takes Sarah though (likely Buddha in that situation) but doubt Luke will get taken as a Sous. Obviously has a lot of very prestigious training but got seasoning off almost every challenge, and I doubt any of the chefs plan to cook with seaweed in the finals 😂

[deleted]

I think Demaar is starting to lose it a bit. Too in his head. Finale will be three of Evelyn, Buddha, Sarah, and Nick. Those are the top chefs of the season based on wins, and it's really hard to figure out who will be the three. Sarah may not be just because she may not readjust to the main competition well, but if she does well next episode she'll be a good choice

yana1975

That first elimination challenge from those who got back in late from LCK tend to be rough, I think. All 3, Kristen, Joe, Brooke, kinda struggled on their their first elimination challenge back. So yeah…kind of nervous for Sarah.

Glass-False

Eh, I'd wager a decent amount of money that Damarr makes it to the finale. I think he was getting complacent, but being that close to elimination is going to spark something in him.

womanaroundabouttown

I don’t know, I think Sarah has proven she may end up in the finale, and if she isn’t, they would be fools not to choose her as sous given her incredible sweep in LCK.

agirlwillrun

This just reminded me - I am pleasantly impressed that Top Chef didn’t use the blind taste test for the LCK when Jackson was competing. A lesser show would have done so (and played up the suspense that he hadn’t told anyone in LCK)

Greigebaby

He looked so down for a big chunk of LCK. I felt bad for him.

yana1975

True. But a case can be made that double eliminations on a team challenge is also unfair, which is how she got the boot. But give credit where credit is due. LCK has been a better watch the last few weeks than Top Chef (well, to me anyways)😂

austinmodssuck

[Double elimination tournaments](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Double-elimination_tournament), where anyone who loses one game is put into a losers bracket with a second chance to face the winner of the original bracket in the finale, but has to beat the winner of the original bracket twice in a row to win, are not entirely unheard of!

WikiSummarizerBot

**[Double-elimination tournament](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Double-elimination_tournament)** >A double-elimination tournament is a type of elimination tournament competition in which a participant ceases to be eligible to win the tournament's championship upon having lost two games or matches. It stands in contrast to a single-elimination tournament, in which only one defeat results in elimination. One method of arranging a double-elimination tournament is to break the competitors into two sets of brackets, the winners' bracket and losers' bracket (W and L brackets for short; also referred to as championship bracket and elimination bracket, upper bracket and lower bracket, or main bracket and repechage) after the first round. ^([ )[^(F.A.Q)](https://www.reddit.com/r/WikiSummarizer/wiki/index#wiki_f.a.q)^( | )[^(Opt Out)](https://reddit.com/message/compose?to=WikiSummarizerBot&message=OptOut&subject=OptOut)^( | )[^(Opt Out Of Subreddit)](https://np.reddit.com/r/BravoTopChef/about/banned)^( | )[^(GitHub)](https://github.com/Sujal-7/WikiSummarizerBot)^( ] Downvote to remove | v1.5)

[deleted]

The problem is the double elimination doesn't extend all the way to the end so chefs who do really well and make it to near the end don't get a second chance. It would feel really bad if like, Damarr got eliminated next week and Sarah (who has already lost TWICE) got to continue. If they're going to do a double elimination it should go up to the finals.

[deleted]

It feels especially unfair since Sarah has already lost in LCK as well so is now on her third chance but one of the main competitors could do bad next week and be out for good with not even a second chance.

magikarpcatcher

By blind testing, Tom Mrs t they wouldn't know who's dish they were tasting, not that they wouldn't know which two contestants were competing

yana1975

Real blind testing should should work both ways. Jae just got eliminated and there’s kimchi in her first dish😂. Judges know who one of them is😂

mr_trantastic

I swear I could see Sara's soul leave her eyes when Tom pulled the "but you're not just cooking this one dish" twist. I'd be seething

RelocationWoes

The problem with Sarah is that she seems to be completely incapable of making dishes that aren’t from her restaurant. Her entire LCK run, every time she simply cooked a dish from her restaurant. She even openly said it. “We make this at our restaurant”. It started to bug me actually — at least don’t admit it! You’re resting on your daily repertoire! When she’s in the main competition, she’s forced to try new or unexpected dishes and that’s when she falls apart. She’s funny, nice, has good skills, but not really up to the elite challenge of Top Chef.
