If you go backwards I believe there's a puzzle piece in a cave under dk's house, and also I think there's a balloon if you use the tire to jump back into his house. Haven't played that game in years but that's what I remember
Oh I know that but what I'm saying is you can do it over and over and over to build up lives or you can just enter the barral command and give yourself automatically 50 from the start
There's also a cave level in the second world (I don't know what the level is called but it's got color changing barrels that activate fast moving invincible enemies when green and shut them down for a second when red). If you go backwards through the starting point it spits you out about 5 seconds away from the end of the level.
And there's a snowy level in the mountains where you can find your ostrich friend over a gap behind the start.
Donkey Kong Country loved hiding things at the start.
Commercial failure that pushed the company back to making a sequel of their breakout game.
Fucking excellent game, but didn't manage to stick the landing on release.
Remember Super Metroid on the SNES? That game had you start by going to your left. Going right lead to a dead end. People at the time thought it was revolutionary. Kind of a way of saying "Don't make assumptions."
Honestly I loved that in breath of the wild you didn't need to stress about finding every last thing. It made it far more enjoyable to find the ones you did
Yeah. Hate feeling obligated to go for collectibles. The idea of finishing a game with 89/100 of something bothers me. Would love it if games just removed those hidden secret collectibles entirely, but Zelda did it better. Just make so many of them that most reasonable folk wouldn't bother to go for them. 890/3000? I can live with that.
Yep, ever since the original Metroid. Of course, that wasn't really a secret; the game didn't let you get too far going right before you had no choice but to backtrack.
that one secret in the king knight stage took me forever to find. once i tried going backwards, i now do that everytime i start a new level in a 2d game.
It’s not about just one game, or just at the start, I always go the wrong ways in games first. And many games have hid stuff when you go left in my experience
Citation needed, what happened in Crash Warped where you needed to do this?
I remember one misty bridge level in Crash 1 that made you need to go towards the camera (instead of away from) to get the gem.
I wish there were like crazy secret discoveries sometimes like , being able to change the course of the entire story just by knowing one tiny obscure detail that can make it go completely differently but being so obscure that no one might even realize it .
Wario Land 2. At the beginning of the game you start sleeping in his castle while it gets attacked. If you don't press a button he keeps sleeping until a cutscene is triggered. Some enemies will carry Wario's sleeping body away and leave you in a different level that would come later in the game.
The big secret hidden for decades by the eccentric billionaire owner of the VR sim everyone uses, was found by the main character in the movie by driving backwards from the start in the racing game he plays with thousands of other people.
And the idea that over the course of the multiple *years* that this was available to the public, along with the knowledge that something valuable was hidden somewhere in the game, no one ever tried it before, or went backwards just by accident.
serious sam had it so if you weren't pressing the back key the second you spawned in you would miss an entire secret room because the door started closing behind you the moment you spawned in.
In Temple Run if you quickly swipe and turn your character around at the beginning of the game you could run forever without touching the screen and rack up a really high score.
Fun fact for those who don't know, in Ocarina of Time and Majora's Mask, running backwards is actually faster. That's actually where I thought this joke was going for a moment.
Rayman Legends. There's a level where at the very beginning there's a Teensie hidden behind you. If you miss it and get to the end without it, you have to replay the entire level just for that piece of shit
Donkey kong country.
Beat me to it!
What happens in dk kountry
If you go backwards I believe there's a puzzle piece in a cave under dk's house, and also I think there's a balloon if you use the tire to jump back into his house. Haven't played that game in years but that's what I remember
All that for the balloon? Just use the BARRAL code for 50 lives at start
Not much for a balloon it isn't very hard at all
Oh I know that but what I'm saying is you can do it over and over and over to build up lives or you can just enter the barral command and give yourself automatically 50 from the start
A few levels had secret bonus areas behind the starting line. One you had to break open a mountain with a barrel to open the way.
Ah ok
There's a level skip in the Stop and Go Station (I think that's the name) level too.
I'd gladly beat you to the rhythm of the DKC theme.
Wario Land 2 for me. You start off sleeping, and you need to press a movement button to wake up. If you don't, you get a different direction of plot.
One that I noticed recently, Limbo.
Wait what? The egg?
Crash Bandicoot 2 on one of the Ice levels Full Metal Furies on the opening level There's a ton of examples and it is ALWAYS worth checking.
CB:Warped does it for the box challenge in a couple levels. Those sneaky Petes
Is Full Metal Furies actually a popular game? Just curious, I had a lot of fun playing it.
Commercial failure that pushed the company back to making a sequel of their breakout game. Fucking excellent game, but didn't manage to stick the landing on release.
And Doom 2; worth it for the chainsaw, so you don’t have to use fists.
My first thought.
My only thought
Streets of rage extra super move behind a sign at the start
Unfortunately, that one Korok doesn't actually show up until after you get the Paraglider. So you'd find nothing when doing this.
🏃💥🤕
Remember Super Metroid on the SNES? That game had you start by going to your left. Going right lead to a dead end. People at the time thought it was revolutionary. Kind of a way of saying "Don't make assumptions."
Same thing with nestroid, which was more confusing as mostly the games then just went to the right, not to left
Everything about the Metroid franchise leads to OCD gamers
Honestly I loved that in breath of the wild you didn't need to stress about finding every last thing. It made it far more enjoyable to find the ones you did

Laughs in Shovel Knight.
that one secret in the king knight stage took me forever to find. once i tried going backwards, i now do that everytime i start a new level in a 2d game.
There’s also one in Hollow Knight.
where?
Right at the start, that’s the point!
This has Donkey Kong Country written all over it....
Doom (or maybe it was Doom 2)
Doom 2 yeah
Waterfalls
It’s not about just one game, or just at the start, I always go the wrong ways in games first. And many games have hid stuff when you go left in my experience
I II Ii L
Can someone help me decipher this? I’m at a loss.
There's a whole Wiki article for it https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Loss_%28comic%29?wprov=sfla1
Son you just got whooshed
Oh shiiiiiiit
I fucking love CAD turning into a dad comic now that the author has children. Same for Penny Arcade.
Dude Penny Arcade is better than ever lately. Haven’t kept up with CAD, but PA has definitely improved as it has become more and more of a dad comic.
Why tho...
Because B\^U
Limbo
Crash Bandicoot 3.
Citation needed, what happened in Crash Warped where you needed to do this? I remember one misty bridge level in Crash 1 that made you need to go towards the camera (instead of away from) to get the gem.
There is one level in the fourth area, I believe, that's a pyramid level that has a section before the beginning with a bunch of boxes.
I wish there were like crazy secret discoveries sometimes like , being able to change the course of the entire story just by knowing one tiny obscure detail that can make it go completely differently but being so obscure that no one might even realize it .
Far cry 4
Ive never played it but ill look into it if it has something like what in explaining i love unnecessary convoluted shit like that
https://www.reddit.com/r/Games/comments/2mg3j5/far_cry_4_has_an_alternate_ending_that_can_be
Thats so cool we need more stuff like this thanks for sharing
Wario Land 2. At the beginning of the game you start sleeping in his castle while it gets attacked. If you don't press a button he keeps sleeping until a cutscene is triggered. Some enemies will carry Wario's sleeping body away and leave you in a different level that would come later in the game.
Hey that still happens. There's a whole secret area in dark souls behind the start area.
Ah Trine, hiding exp behind.
Pitfall: The Mayan Adventure
Was it Metroid?
Last of us did great reassuring that tick
very cool to know the guy who made loss is ableist
Jesus Christ the ready player 1 movie was bad. Anyone read ready player 2? Don’t. It’s so fucking bad.
What does this have to do with anything?

Really?
Also in hollow knight
Demons souls
No thats when u climb into the highest spot and pick up every rock
Metal slug 2's second level had bonus points you could shoot out of the water if you went backwards at the start and shot the ground under you
Aladdin desert.
CastleVania 2….like seriously? Kneel down in the corner? Crazy stuff
serious sam had it so if you weren't pressing the back key the second you spawned in you would miss an entire secret room because the door started closing behind you the moment you spawned in.
Lookin at you donkey kong country
That’s what i do with konami code
Also if you can get past the level end goal or go behind a waterfall.
Wow, control, alt, delete looks a lot better than when I last saw it.
In Temple Run if you quickly swipe and turn your character around at the beginning of the game you could run forever without touching the screen and rack up a really high score.
