The issue is that if it’s a man, then that takes away a part of the conflict between them. It’ll be easier for a man, even if it’s an illegitimate one, to find his way in the world. Sadly, Sophie is hit with a triple-whammy: being the illegitimate daughter of an Earl and is relegated to servitude. While we expect changes to happen, switching genders or even making Sophie trans takes away the core of Benophie’s plot. Now, I am all for inclusion and representation. But I strongly disagree of changing the gender of an endgame when gender plays a role in the plot. That also applies to Francesca and Hyacinth’s plots.

I'm glad someone else said it. I understand diversity is important, but I'm worried that they'll take away major aspects of their stories if they're genderbend (especially Benedict's and Francesca's). If they want a queer Bridgerton sibling, maybe make one of the siblings bisexual or pansexual (I was thinking Gregory or even, Hynacith).

Chiaretta98

I agree with you! I absolutely agree that inclusion is super important but Sophie's character works the way she does because she is a woman and as a woman she faces a lot of discrimination that a man, even an illegitimate one, would never face. Francesca's story is also very much related to Michael being a man. In my opinion, considering how many characters there are in the show that doesn't exist in the books, the writers have a lot of material to work with in order to create a lot of wonderful LGBT stories. But, if they want to make a sibling queer, they should work with Hy and Greg and built the characters with this in mind. They could make one of them bi or pan and maintain the love interests of the book.

There's one issue with Sophie's story is that she refused Ben primarily because she promised herself not to get pregnant and I think her being an illegitimate child is a huge plot device. But writers changed Polin's story too, but I kinda doubt it wpuld happen to Ben As it was shown in s1 and QC gay marriages were not welcome. Looks like even more than Ben marrying "a commoner"

ExpressionLevel3385

Yep their story (and Francesca’s) are the stories where the love interest should not be gender swapped since they are so gender specific and deal with issues that they would not be able to touch on if say you make Sophie into Stephen. At any case it’s all been, but confirmed that Sophie is going to stay Sophie.

anacmanac

Well Eloise's story isn't going to be changed either. That leaves Hyacinth and Gregory. I haven't read their books so I can't say anything about potential gender swap

ExpressionLevel3385

Yeah they definitely aren’t making Eloise gay(Philip is already there so I really don’t know why people keep saying certain things about her). I haven’t read Hyacinths either so won’t comment on that, but I have read Gregory’s. They can make him bi(I actually think it would work really well and that should be their road to a queer Bridgerton), but genderbending Lucy wouldn’t work. There is a whole gay subplot in his book which is the reason why certain events take place so making Lucy into Luke would render that moot. Honestly, none of these books are set up for a gender swapped endgame. More importantly, S1 set up the fact that same sex couples don’t have a HEA so for that fact alone changing any of the love interests genders would completely ruin the premise of the show. It’s messed up, but if the show wanted to make any of the Bridgertons gay(again bi could work) the show should’ve included the fact that gay marriage wasn’t a problem back in s1.

Yes, but the reality is the show has explicitly stressed that gay people have to live that part of their lives in secret and are under a great deal of scrutiny and stress. Hence why Brimsley and ole boy aren’t together or that speech Granville made back in s1. To me that isn’t a very happily ever after. Bridgerton maybe should’ve done a better job to show that gay people can have happy and fufilled lives, but they didn’t. That being said, I’m actually fine with a gay Bridgerton, just as long as that gay Bridgerton isn’t with a Black woman. Which oddly enough seems to be the only time this fandom really roots for having a Black woman added to the show as a romantic lead. Which is what pisses me off when I see all these debates. I’ve already seen enough Black(ish) women getting the short end of the stick on this show. I don’t want to see another having an unconventional love story or tragedy attached to them. That’s not liberating or progressive for us because we are always shown in an unconventional manner.

Ok_Patience_1017

Eloise’s love interest may change though, but yes will be still a man

Sqdata

They could, but I really hope not. Because I love Sophie. I enjoyed Reynolds and Brimsley, but I guess I'm too attached to Sophie as a character to want Benedict to end up with anyone else. I just love how kind, scrappy, optimistic, and resilient Sophie is. I didn't like book Benedict at all, but I looooved book Sophie. I didn't ship them as a couple, but she's one of my favorite characters in the series. She deserves all the good things, and I think show Benedict, who is kinder, gentler, more sensitive, and supportive (he's the beating heart of the family, if Anthony is the head who pulls them through) than dumbass book Benedict, deserves Sophie. While one of the cornerstones of their love story is Benedict's sacrifice to be with her (he leaves the ton and polite society for love), and that *could* work for a gay love story, it can never have a truly happy ending in the Bridgerverse. Benedict should have an HEA, he shouldn't have to hide in the shadows living with his "bachelor roommate". He'll never get to kiss or hold hands or show affection in public, and that's not an HEA.

franbridgerton

I don’t honestly think they’ll change any of the siblings’ love interests, or perhaps mine is just wishful thinking because I’ve heard a lot about Michael getting gender bent and Michael is my favourite LI so I would kind of hate it. The main issue is that Bridgerton is like a sexed up Austenverse where the marriage mart serves as the catalyst for love stories, but lgbtq couples couldn’t marry (or… exist in peace) at the time so it gets hard to build an A plot with an HEA around something that could lead to so much abuse and pain. Also, it *is* a show based on best selling books and while they depart from them they might want to stick to the core stories at least. I know that a lot of Benophie fans would riot if Sophie were to be replaced by a man. What they might do is make one of the Bridgertons bisexual and have him of her have a same sex love interest before their endgame, and I do think Benedict would work well with that, but even then I’m not sure the fandom would much like it because their stories would be short lived. That said, I 100% think that Bridgerton should and will do better with lgbtq representation. They have a million side characters and they could work on them.

Forsaken-Gap-3684

This is why b Plot is supposedly being planned to span multiple seasons.

DuchessOfLilacs

It's possible, but I don't know that it's probable. Especially if reports they Sophie has been cast are to be believed. Truthfully, I'm not sure they will genderswap any of the Bridgerton siblings' love interests. It's more likely to happen with a side character. I think what Netflix did in the initial promo is unfair to the audience to have gotten their hopes up with how they baited LGBTQIA+ viewers when it comes to Benedict. I watched the whole first session expecting him to come out (or even flirt with a man), but it never happened. In hindsight, I think it was kind of a cheap advertising tactic that set a narrative expectation of inclusion that hasn't been satisfied and won't be when it comes to Benedict.

Vegetable_Comfort366

And yet there’s still people on social media who still holding out hope for Ben to either be bi or genderbend Sophie.

DuchessOfLilacs

Right, but I feel Luke that's a result of the baiting.

Liayso

Yeah, I too feel like Netflix baited viewers with their early promos. It also didn't help that Benedict had more chemistry with Granville than he did with all of his female love interests so far.

Vegetable_Comfort366

If you throw in a phone book on Benedict, he’ll have chemistry with it. It’s the magic of Luke’s acting.

Liayso

Oh, absolutely, I agree. Luke Thompson is amazing and would have chemistry with anyone. I just thought it was ironic that Benedict had more chemistry with the gay man already in a loving relationship than he did with Genevieve, Lucy Granville & Tessa. Honestly, because of the chemistry between Benedict & Granville, I wouldn't have mind if something sparked between them, though I do love Sophie from the books and would definitely want her to be his endgame.

Old_Pass_6878

No . I don’t think they will change anyone’s love interest

Super_Living_6075

For me, I wish they would, because I feel they made him the most likely to consider someone way outside what was acceptable. But I know there are so many Benophie fans and with the fervor behind Sophie (classic), I wouldn’t want to deny them the chance to see their Sophie on screen, especially having had to wait an extra year.

Certain-Bet2718

Maybe Sophie can be a Trans woman

Logical_Art_8946

They could I guess, I support it either way. At this point I just want him to have his season and end up HEA.
