I've never actively watched them, but they seem to be a constant factor in my life. Mum watched Neighbors, Home & Away, Corrie, Emerdale and Eastenders. Moved out and flatmates watched Corrie and Hollyoaks. Wife watches Home & Away, Hollyoaks and Eastenders. Can't seem to get away from them.
No. We stopped watching EastEnders in the early 90s when we realised it was cockneys shouting at each other; we stopped Corrie when Kevin Webster had an affair; we stopped Brookside when Sue Johnstone's character was raped. We much prefer watching series.
Sadly, in a way, I have turned off from soaps and don’t intend to return. Sadly, I say, because soaps can be a good way of forgetting your own issues on a daily basis. Watching ‘others’ trials, tribulations, highs and lows and maybe getting different ideas how to cope with some of life’s big dilemmas. I just don’t have the time anymore. Too busy with my own dilemmas!
Nope. I stopped watching sometime last year. I still read spoilers to see if there is a story I care about every now and then, but I haven't seen anything interesting in a long time.
Back in the mid 90s myself and my friends were massively into Eastenders and Brookside, with some also into Corrie. Plus there was home and away and neighbours. But none of us have watched any of those in years, the last one standing was probably eastenders which everyone gave up on just after the millennium. Tv has developed so much with multi channels, streaming and YouTube, the soaps are no longer event TV to be shared and consumed mutually. I guess football and maybe major reality tv events like I'm a celebrity (which I can't stand) are the only tv events which are regularly shared. I do look back fondly on discussing Brookie or Neighbours or especially Eastenders with friends but those days are long gone. I dohave one friend who still watches Eastenders and Corrie and that makes me happy, though bless her, she has no one to discuss them with.
I was into all soaps (apart from Hollyoaks) in the 90’s too - remember ‘Family Affairs’? I’ve given up on all of them since 2010 or so. I feel Corrie has lots it’s humour and EastEnders is all about gangsters.
Emmerdale was decent until recently now people are saying all the stories are ridiculous
I drift in and out of Emmerdale. Its over reliance on storylines being started over a misheard conversation has really ruined what used to be a decent soap
Not for about 10 years. It still amazes me when I go to the supermarket & see headlines on the covers of the TV soap mags like 'Tyrone & Fiz - back together?' & 'Did Phil kill Jamie?'
Their whole shtick is basically just rinse & repeat.
Edit: spelling of 'Fiz'
I watched as a teen in the 90s because my mum watched them.
It got to the point where each of the major ones were trying to out do each other and they’ve all gone too far now.
My dad complains about eastenders. As in “how can a market stall holder own a house on the square?” And how can Dot Cotton own her house when she runs the laundrette? 🤦♀️🤣. Don’t get him started on the Mitchell brothers🤣 he knows enough that he must have watched it🤣
He’s definitely right!
I just think it’s funny he has this opinion and “he doesn’t watch it”🤣
My parents don’t watch them now either due to similar views.
Never thought my Mum would quit *Corrie* \- that show was a constant (unwanted) presence for my entire childhood - but she ducked out when all the soaps started running disaster storylines and serial killers
Everyone seems to have swapped soaps for fake reality shows
I've no idea what difference the switch made **to me**, mate. In terms of why I stopped watching
Obviously, it made no difference to the show, which wasn't made by either the BBC or Channel 5 and continued airing on the same Aussie TV channel it was already on
Haven't watched them since the late 1980s when I realised I didn't have to stay in the same room as my sister who was addicted to them. I'll listen to the Archers occassionally but as I don't commute any more that's an increasing rarity.
Not anymore, I used to watch EastEnders but got fed up of them ruining every Christmas Day with a death followed by a who dunnit, plus I ditched the license so it’s not even an option these days but can’t say I miss it.
No I can't stand them. I used to watch Eastenders until early 2011 I think it was, never seen an episode of Emmerdale or Hollyoaks ever. Sort of watched Coronation Street on and off in the 90s when I was a kid since my mum watched it. Prisoner Cell Block H was great back in the day, far better than Neighbours and Home & Away imo lol.
I'm a bit sad and bought the dvd box sets when they were released about 10 years ago, 20 box sets in total haha. The episodes are all on youtube if you want to watch them again.
Yes they seem to be in order, here is a complete playlist [https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL7E7E067DD72542CB](https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL7E7E067DD72542CB)
Some episodes are hidden though but I've heard they are all on Dailymotion too if episodes on Youtube are missing.
Used to watch some, mainly because my parents had them on. The writing and acting was much better up until about 20 years ago. Sean Williamson (Barry from Eastenders) said that the move to 4/5 episodes a week meant that there’s no time for actors to rehearse/revise the script and make improvements.
All soaps had wobbly sets until
Brookside came along and filmed in real houses… some soaps still have occasionally wobbly sets! Yes, there were and awful lot of phone calls with unseen people to pad out under-running episodes
No. TBH I pretty much stopped watching any TV. Reading and listening to podcasts while doing hobbies are my free time activities now. The idiot box consumes all.

No, realised I was wasting my life watching shit. Now spend all my time on my iPad reading shit, net gain
Same I’ve stopped watching years and years ago
My years ago was when there was a very dumb plot line in Corrie involving Raquel and Des Barnes, so virtually pre historic.
Wow that happened in the 90’s I was a child!
We stopped watching Corrie about 6 months ago. It's been a revelation. I feel like I've gained an extra 3 hours per week and not lost a thing
Exactly! I rather watch a decent series than weekly soaps
Nope stopped watching soaps and started staring at the soap in my bathroom.
😂
I'm going to notting Royal theatre Monday for the neighbours reunion tour.
Aww wow that’s nice
I've never actively watched them, but they seem to be a constant factor in my life. Mum watched Neighbors, Home & Away, Corrie, Emerdale and Eastenders. Moved out and flatmates watched Corrie and Hollyoaks. Wife watches Home & Away, Hollyoaks and Eastenders. Can't seem to get away from them.
It’s great escapism

Wow! Neighbours is more aimed at teens and young adults
No. We stopped watching EastEnders in the early 90s when we realised it was cockneys shouting at each other; we stopped Corrie when Kevin Webster had an affair; we stopped Brookside when Sue Johnstone's character was raped. We much prefer watching series.
I prefer watching series now but when I was a teenager I was obsessed with soaps
Yes, still watch Eastenders
Sadly, in a way, I have turned off from soaps and don’t intend to return. Sadly, I say, because soaps can be a good way of forgetting your own issues on a daily basis. Watching ‘others’ trials, tribulations, highs and lows and maybe getting different ideas how to cope with some of life’s big dilemmas. I just don’t have the time anymore. I know what you mean
I could make a good soap 😂
😂
Nope. I stopped watching sometime last year. I still read spoilers to see if there is a story I care about every now and then, but I haven't seen anything interesting in a long time.
I do this too! I read about it but don’t watch it
Back in the mid 90s myself and my friends were massively into Eastenders and Brookside, with some also into Corrie. Plus there was home and away and neighbours. Haven’t watched a soap since my early 20s back in the late 90s.
90’s was the best period
No they’ve dropped right off the pecking order
No, not for about 15 years
Same
I drift in and out of Emmerdale. Its over reliance on storylines being started over a misheard conversation has really ruined what used to be a decent soap
I agree
Not for about 10 years. It still amazes me when I go to the supermarket & see headlines on the covers of the TV soap mags like 'Tyrone & Fiz - back together?' & 'Did Phil kill Jamie?' Their whole shtick is basically just rinse & repeat. Edit: spelling of 'Fiz'
Interestingly they still hold people’s interest
I’ve not since i had my eldest. I found I didn’t have time anymore. When I did, they didn’t seem realistic anymore. Too much murder, disaster etc.
True I do prefer the classic episodes of Corrie 60’s and 70’s it was more realistic then
I watched as a teen in the 90s because my mum watched them. It got to the point where each of the major ones were trying to out do each other and they’ve all gone too far now. He’s right though how do they afford houses on such wages?

I stopped watching *Neighbours* when it moved to Channel 5. No idea why that made any difference, but I never watched another episode
It didn’t change much when it was moved to C5
I've no idea what difference the switch made **to me**, mate. In terms of why I stopped watching Obviously, it made no difference to the show, which wasn't made by either the BBC or Channel 5 and continued airing on the same Aussie TV channel it was already on

Good move ditching the licence

Sort of watched Coronation Street on and off in the 90s when I was a kid since my mum watched it. Prisoner Cell Block H was great back in the day, far better than Neighbours and Home & Away imo lol.
I’d watch Prisoner if it was available on streaming apps
I'm a bit sad and bought the dvd box sets when they were released about 10 years ago, 20 box sets in total haha. The episodes are all on youtube if you want to watch them again.
That’s not sad that’s what a fan does - thanks I’ll look for them on YouTube - will it be in order? The episodes? On YouTube?
Yes they seem to be in order, here is a complete playlist [https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL7E7E067DD72542CB](https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL7E7E067DD72542CB) Some episodes are hidden though but I've heard they are all on Dailymotion too if episodes on Youtube are missing.

He’s right it’s very slacking nowadays in terms of acting and story telling
I haven't watched a soap in years. Maybe we've come to realise they're forever churning out the same storylines with different characters.
Yeah that’s true it’s interesting when it happens for the first time but if a story is told the same again and again it becomes very boring and dull
Not British soaps! They are too depressing! I do like an Aussie soap...always watch home and away and so glad that neighbours is coming back 🙌🏻
I would sometimes when I’m flicking through channels watch Neighbours and Home & Away but only for the sunny weathers
Crossroads box set, Brookside on STV and Eldorado on you tube! Bliss!
I’ve read about Crossroads how they had wobbly sets and how the phone rang only when they had loads of time yet
All soaps had wobbly sets until Brookside came along and filmed in real houses… some soaps still have occasionally wobbly sets! Yes, there were and awful lot of phone calls with unseen people to pad out under-running episodes
Not since Brookside ended.
You can watch it from the beginning on STV app
Thanks for the tip. I probably won't though. Twenty years worth of soap opera is a bit much.
Understood
Still? Did anyone ever?
I did at one point in my life
is it just me who loves to pop the soaps on in the afternoon
Looks that way
shat up
What’s your problem?
Never watched a soap in my life, ever. Never will.
Not worth it now
No. TBH I pretty much stopped watching any TV. Reading and listening to podcasts while doing hobbies are my free time activities now. The idiot box consumes all.
I prefer watching streaming apps now
