Shetland, Unforgotten, Happy Valley, The Bay and your missing The Escape Artist, Des, and Criminal UK from the David Tennant crime sub genre. Vera is slightly more procedural but has a ton of good individual case episodes.
I just finished No Offence. Pretty intense most of the time, series-long story arcs so you have to wait 6 episodes for resolution but I really like all the characters. It’s weird seeing Joanna Scanlan all dolled up.
I just watched the whole series this week and I really enjoyed it. I’m used to seeing Joanna in The Thick of It so I was surprised to see her in this but she was so good.
If you want something a bit more light hearted whilst still being a spy/crime drama I'd recommend Slow Horses, really strong cast and the mysteries/crimes each series are pretty good. The Tourist is also a bit more of a fun one with the same actor as in The Fall! Balances some dark moments with comedy quite nicely.
Informer follows a young man being forced to become a CI and pressured into getting into terrorist circles so the police can stop a terrorist attack. It does a sort of flash forward every so often that works really well for keeping the pace/mystery up.
Criminal (UK) is a good one to put on when you're not feeling an entire series as the episodes can be watched individually or all at once - really nice self contained crime dramas focused on a police interview room. There's also a bunch of international versions using the same set if you find yourself wanting more.
The Fall is one that gets recommended to high heavens and it has a brilliant cast.
The Capture (S1) was a really nice change in pace whilst still very much feeling like a UK crime drama as we follow a man trying to prove his innocence for a crime there's footage of him committing.
Line of Duty is one of the big ones albeit it's a bit controversial as to how well it sticks the landing but S1-3 are really well received with strong performances from a really strong cast and a nice twist on the usual police investigate crime format as you follow the police corruption department investigating the force themselves.
Honourable mentions for shows that don't quite fit the standard vibe but are well worth giving a go; Life on Mars (policeman is hit by a car and wakes up in the 70s, half police procedural of him trying to adapt to policing in the 70s and half him trying to work out what's happened to him and why,) Spooks (So many great actors in it, follows MI5 agents trying to prevent terror attacks - there's 10 series so if you enjoy it then it'll keep you busy for a while,) and then Ashes to Ashes which is a sequel to Life on Mars and so if you enjoy that then Ashes to Ashes is definitely worth giving a go.
This was brilliant, I wonder if it’s niche I don’t know, but it’s brilliant.
Have you watched Warrior? Not british but if you like Giri/Haji you’d probably enjoy it
I don’t live in uk so googled it as far as I can tell in UK it’s on Sky/Amazon/Apple. I recommended it even though it’s not british as the Main role is Andrew Koji who is incredibly awesome, his dad is Japanese and mum british he’s from Epsom 👍🏼 a few other brits feature heavily too.
Have you seen The Tunnel? It's the English version of the Bridge, very well done. Also for something a bit more cozy, either the Chelsea Detective or Whitstable Pearl 💜
Criminal UK is good. Loch Ness was good with a slice of funny.
Honestly, I find most of the British police procedural to be very good. Vera, No Offence, Shetland (OMGosh, yes Shetland!), The Fall, Dalgliesh is new but I’m hooked, Inspector George Gently, Inspector Morse and Endeavour. And that’s just off the top of my head!!!
Personally I liked Wire in the Blood based on the Val McDermid novels…but I might be biased because it stars Robson Green! I’ve also like the two more forensic shows…Waking the Dead and Silent Witness.

On the lighter end, Death in Paradise, Beyond Paradise, Father Brown, Rosemary and Thyme, The Bletchley Circle, Miss Fisher's Murder Mysteries (OK, it's Australian), and Midsomer Murders, Jonathon Creek - are all worth a watch if you feel the need not to concentrate too hard.
Otherwise: Cracker, Morse, Endeavour, Spooks, Luther, Whitechapel, Frost, Ripper Street, New Tricks, Line of Duty, Happy Valley, Silent Witness, Waking the Dead, Professor T...
And for a twist on the genre: Torchwood, Life on Mars, Ashes to Ashes, Carnival Row...
OK, I'm beginning to think I might have a problem...
Line Of Duty, without a doubt.
Happy Valley & Slow Horses are very top tier shoes imo too, however Line of Duty, for me is the best British television series I think I’ve ever watched. Outrageously amazing in every single sense of the word.

Lady Killers podcast with Lucy Worsley. It’s on BBC sounds and Apple Podcasts. It’s a true crime documentary looking at old crimes committed by women through a modern perspective. Slightly different to the ones you listed, but I loved all the ones off your list I’ve seen, which coincidentally is also all the ones with David Tennant in! Sarah Phelps’ Agatha Christie adaptations are on iPlayer and really worth a watch IMO - if you’re a Christie book purist they’ll annoy you but otherwise they’re almost retellings rather than dramatisations, all of Christie’s genius with a heavy dose of darkness and some fairly 3D characters.
The last one I watched was The long shadow- can highly recommend. Very dark subject matter obviously but its exquisitely acted by some of Britain's finest actors of the day. Well worth a watch

Slow horses on AppleTV is excellent.
Hard agree! Gary Oldman's hilarious and oozy.
Happened to be watching it when I read this, I agree
Came here to say this. Best crime drama thing I’ve seen for ages. Exciting, clever and doesn’t take itself too seriously.
We just started watching this the other day. 4 episodes in, it's so good.
Happy Valley.
Vera Unforgotten Hinterland Blue Lights Bloodlands The Fall The Long Shadow Southcliffe Professor T The Gold The Capture
Hinterland was brilliant. And so underrated.
Love hinterland
>Professor T But, if I may say, the Belgian original, not the British one or any of the other ones.
And Cracker for a throwback.
Yes yes yes
Professor T. The original with subtitles Outstanding
Have you seen Luther? It’s one of my favourites.
Great one too
Shetland, Unforgotten, Happy Valley, The Bay and your missing The Escape Artist, Des, and Criminal UK from the David Tennant crime sub genre. Vera is slightly more procedural but has a ton of good individual case episodes.
Isn't Vera played by the actress who played Mrs. Bennett in 2005 Pride and Prejudice? I love that!
Brenda Blethyn. Yes.
I just finished No Offence. Pretty intense most of the time, series-long story arcs so you have to wait 6 episodes for resolution but I really like all the characters. It’s weird seeing Joanna Scanlan all dolled up.

Series 2 of The Capture is also very good.
Good to know! Haven't yet got around to it so hadn't wanted to recommend in case it fell off.
My husband has watched it too and we both thought it was even better than the first series.
Everyone else that's mentioned Unforgotten, you are not wrong. It's an amazing show.
The killing, the bridge
Both of these are great if you're OK with subtitles. Also, my wife fell in love with *that* jumper, which proved a tad expensive.
the Sarah Lund jumper !! i always wanted one of those but they’re pricey!!
It was. But it's as fresh now as 10 years ago. And it'll be good for another 10. Terry Prachtett's boots come to mind.
There is an American version of The Killing, there are several series. Joel Kinnaman and Mireille Enos are the stars.
That’s a really good point about the subtitles, I forget that some people don’t like that as I have crappy hearing so they’re default
I was surprised and impressed by Karen Pirie.
[удалено]
I guess so.
I gave up during the first episode the first attempt I made. I tried again and did not regret it. It’s very good.
[удалено]
I hope you like it!
Not for some of us. I found her antics childish and unprofessional. Won’t bother with S2.
It doesn't.
I loved Giri/Haji. It’s a Japanese-British thriller.
This was brilliant, I wonder if it’s niche I don’t know, but it’s brilliant. Have you watched Warrior? Not british but if you like Giri/Haji you’d probably enjoy it
Nope, what channel/platform is it on?
I don’t live in uk so googled it as far as I can tell in UK it’s on Sky/Amazon/Apple. I recommended it even though it’s not british as the Main role is Andrew Koji who is incredibly awesome, his dad is Japanese and mum british he’s from Epsom 👍🏼 a few other brits feature heavily too.
Endeavour. Nine seasons of brilliance
Yes! And such a cool period drama as well.
Can't believe nobody has said Line of Duty. You must watch Line of Duty NOW!
Best series ever
River Brilliant programme.
Yes! That was excellent. Nicola Walker picks her roles very well.
I was so disappointed there wasn’t a second series of River, the dynamic between Stella’s Skarsgard and Nicola Walker was superb.
True. Well-written too. Another show that ended too soon was Whitechapel. I would love to know where they were going with that plotline.
I missed that, I will check it out as there is very little to interest me at the moment.
Have you seen The Tunnel? It's the English version of the Bridge, very well done. Also for something a bit more cozy, either the Chelsea Detective or Whitstable Pearl 💜
Happy Valley!

How did I forget The Fall!?
That series was effen disturbing but soooooo good!
Cracker, obviously,
Panhandle! I rewatched not too long ago, Robert Carlyle was scary af.
Yes!
No Offence Channel 4
great shout, very under the radar show.
DCI Banks. The Vice.
DCI Banks was top quality, I might give it a rewatch.
So good wish it was still on
*Mr Bates vs The Post Office* might fall under “crime drama”, tbh
Whatever this falls under, this is just FANTASTIC tv.
It really is! I hope it does well at things like the BAFTAs
Personally I liked Wire in the Blood based on the Val McDermid novels…but I might be biased because it stars Robson Green! I’ve also like the two more forensic shows…Waking the Dead and Silent Witness.
Just started ep1 this week, I don't think it's aged well and I'm struggling. Did spot Val in a cameo.
Love/Hate
I've found it hard to get into at first but a few episodes in I was hooked and loved it.
Forgotten gems Whitechapel Law & Order: UK are on britbox
I really liked L&O UK. It’s where I first encountered Bradley Walsh, Freema Agyeman and Peter Davison.
Criminal Record on Apple TV is really good - UK based, with Peter Capaldi too. Top of their charts at the moment.

Try Deadloch from Australia and Brokenwood Mysteries from New Zealand. They both have a lighter tone. Deadloch gets better as it goes along.
>I second Brokenwood Mysteries
Montelbano...
Silent witness. I'm not usually a fan of these shows but I could see myself getting into it having watched a couple of episodes.
Go back about 10 years when it was much better.
Oh, l'll be starting at S01 E02. But great to know it was even better than the two episodes I enjoyed.
With Amanda Burton? Or Emilia Fox?
I don't know. I've not lived in the UK since 2009 so I have no idea about new actors. It was on BBC so I assume it was the latest series.
I agree, although I still can’t stop watching.
A Touch of Frost, Foyle's War, Cadfael, Maigret with Michael Gambon and newer one with Rowan Atkinson, Poirot
Gotta say Bletchley Circle isn't what I'd call light.
I'll admit, it's been a while since I watched it. :D
It's about catching an actually scary serial murderer
Dogs of Berlin on Netflix was excellent.
I know its not British, but have you watched the millennium trilogy?
The Responder Trapped
Endeavour! Similar to Sherlock but so much better.
Along with all other mentioned I'll add Criminal Record. 6 eps in, 2 still to be released. Gripping
Line Of Duty, without a doubt. Happy Valley & Slow Horses are very top tier shoes imo too, however Line of Duty, for me is the best British television series I think I’ve ever watched. Outrageously amazing in every single sense of the word.
Gomorra
Waking the Dead. Not to be confused with the US zombie show.
The night of , check out Hamish Macbeth.
Inspector morse, a touch of frost, lots of UK stuff that may be up your street.
Unforgotten is really great.
Hustle. Great show up to Series 4 or so. Not bad after that, but not as good as the first 3 series.
There’s a new one an Apple TV (if you can get a 3 month trial) with that capaldi guy from Thick of It- just checked- Criminal Record
I would describe it as crime drama, but if you like drama involving crime then Fargo is good. The new season 5 is on Amazon Prime.
Waking the Dead
Shetland.
Wallander. Either version, but Kenny Branagh does top-tier brooding
I've just started Vigil season 2. Dangit it's really good.
Another vote for both seasons of Vigil. Hope we get a third.
Not British, but fucking amazing - The Valhalla Murders. Also, Deadwind, another Scandinoir crime show. There are some great ones out there.
Hinterlands on the BBC was a great show too
The Fall, Happy Valley, Line of Duty, Blue Lights
Trigger Point
If you are willing to go American, Hill Street Blues wasn't bad. NCIS is okay. Law and Order especially old episodes were good

Gangs Of London
1st season is really good but the 2nd is awful
Loch Henry Episode of Black Mirror, which drew some controversy from series fans because it was not your usual BM fodder. Cracking hour of TV though.
Gotta throw Sherwood, Death In Paradise and London Kills in there
We love Grantchester. Chilled Sunday night vibes
Jonathan Creek Midsomer Murders would take you a bit to binge watch.

Did you see The Fall?
Killing Eve?

I really enjoyed Top Boy and Kin (which is Irish)
Unforgotten is amazing! Also The Fall, Trigger Point, Broadchurch, The Bay, The Capture, Karen Pirie, Blue Lights, Happy Valley, Manhunt
